OBIT: Smith Thomas F.

The Mountain Democrat
July 17, 1915

Death Follows Short Illness

Thomas F. Smith proprietor of the Arcade Bakery, died at his home in this city at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday night, July 13, after an illness of about three days. He was about attending to business as usual last Saturday, but complained of stomach trouble in the evening. During the night he was taken seriously ill, and despite prompt medical attention grew worse until the end came unexpectedly Tuesday night, due to complicated stomach and heart trouble. Deceased was a prominent figure in the business life of Placerville, and his untimely death will cause a noticeable void therein. He was a native of California, 45 years, two months and seven days of age, and leaves a widow, a young daughter and a nephew as his only near relatives. The major portion of his life was spent in Placerville. He was prominent in fraternal circles, being a member of Placerville Parlor No. 9, Native Sons of the Golden West, of Court Confidence No. 117, Foresters of America, and of Placerville Aerie No. 889, Fraternal Order of Eagles. For many years he was a member of the National Guard of California, rising from the ranks to the position of captain of H Company, Second Infantry Regiment. He was a lieutenant in this company at the time of the prison break at Folsom about eight years ago, and participated in the fight at Manzanita Hill between armed convicts and members of the militia, in which two of the latter were killed. The funeral took place this Friday morning, mass being held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, after which the cortege proceeded to Union Cemetery in charge of the Native Sons, escorted by the Eagles and Foresters, the body being followed to its last resting place by many sorrowing friends. Floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. All the business houses in the city were closed from 10 o’clock until noon, during the funeral hours, as a mark of respect to the deceased.
Allen

John Page Allen, another one of the pioneers of El Dorado county, passed away last Saturday at the family home on Cedar Ravine in this city.

He had recently returned from a visit to his daughter, Mrs. H.W. Shartzer, of Sacramento, at whose home the 90th anniversary of his birthday was celebrated, Feb. 22, by a gathering of relatives and friends, when he was apparently in the best of health. After his return home two weeks ago, he was stricken with la grippe, death resulting from a weakening of the heart from the disease.

Mr. Allen was a native of Fairfield, Maine, where he learned the ship joiners’ trade. He settled at Newtown, following placer mining for three years. Afterwards, he moved to Placerville, where his principal occupation was mining, which he successfully followed for many years.

A jovial man of excellent principles, he was universally liked, and was chosen for a number of successive years as one of the directors of the El Dorado County Fair Association, when county fairs were formerly held here. He was also interested in “The Grange”, a co-operative store of which he was one of the founders and which was conducted for several years in the building now occupied by F. Benjamin.

For many years he had been a member of Palmyra Lodge No. 26, F and A.M., of this city, under whose auspices the funeral was conducted Monday at 2 p.m., in Masonic Temple, Rev.
The Mountain Democrat
October 4, 1913

Sad and Untimely Death

A telegram from Miss Gladys Watson at Reno, Nevada, to the Rosier family in this city on Wednesday last, summoned them to the bedside of her mother, Mrs. Wm. T. Watson, who died before their arrival at that place, from the effects of an operation for appendicitis she underwent on the 21st of September, At that time Mr. and Mrs. Watson, who have resided in Virginia City for some time, were attending the fair in Reno, when she was taken ill, and the physicians who were called said that her only chance was an immediate operation. Though her condition was critical from the first, hope of her recovery was not entirely abandoned until Wednesday when her sister Miss Jane and brother Clarence Rosier, with her niece Mrs. Etta Kramp started across the mountains with Henry Marks in his auto; losing in the race with death, by two hours. Mrs. Viola Watson was a native of White Rock this county where she was born forty-seven years ago, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Rosier, one of the old pioneer families of this city. She was married in 1886 to William Watson, who with two daughters Mrs. Charles Dascomb and Gladys Watson, and two grandsons survives to mourn the loss of a faithful, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her death is also a sad blow to her only surviving sister Miss Jane Rosier and her brothers Charlton and Clarence. Her nieces are Mrs. Albert Kramp, Mrs. Dallas Bosquit, Mrs. Louis Reeg, Mrs. T.F. Lewis, Mrs. Rena Bernoudy, and Mrs. C.W. Ball; while many friends in her home town are saddened that they are never to hear her cheery greeting again.

Mrs. Kramp and Clarence Rosier accompanied the body by train to this city, the rest of the family returning by automobile.

Funeral services will be held at the Rosier home in Upper Placerville at 2 p.m. Sunday under the auspices of Marguerite Parlor N.D.G.W. of which Mrs. Watson has long been a member. Rev. S.J. Buck will officiate and interment will be in the family plat at Union Cemetery.
The Mountain Democrat
July 26, 1913

J.W. Armstrong Dies, Makes Large Bequest to Morning Star Lodge

J.W. Armstrong, who was rescued from the fire which destroyed the Western hotel a little over a week ago, died at the Wrenn Sanatorium Wednesday. He had been very ill and under medical care at the hotel, and but for the proprietor, Mr. Gridley, would have been burned to death in the fire which destroyed the hotel and adjacent buildings. As it was, he was badly burned about the hands and face, and the shock hastened the end which was not far distant. He was a native of Scotland and was about 60 years of age. He had lived in Kelsey district for fifteen years where he owned an 800 acre tract of land adjoining the Demuth place on the East and the Gopher-Boulder property on the North. This he sold to W.J. Hawkins from one of the Southern States about a year ago, and came to Placerville to receive medical attention for an illness of long standing. He was a quiet retiring man of good business principles, and for every thing given him, he wished to return value received, as he objected to being under obligations to anyone. He had been married, and has other relatives, but said he had lost trace of them. He had been an Odd Fellow, and knowing that death was near he sent for Attorney A. Darlington a few days before the end and directed the disposal of his property, all of which he bequeathed to Morning Star Lodge No. 20, O.O.O.F., of Placerville.

Besides money realized on his land in Kelsey district, he owned real estate in Texas and Colorado, and the amount of the gift which the local lodge has received will be between $8,000 and $10,000. His funeral, which took place Friday afternoon, was under the auspices of Morning Star Lodge I.O.O.F., at the O’Keefe chapel, Rev. S.J. Buck officiating and Mrs. S.H. Rantz and Miss Mollie Carpenter furnishing several vocal numbers. He was laid to rest in the Odd Fellows’ plat in Union Cemetery.
The Mountain Democrat
April 19, 1913

Sudden Death of Chas. E. Merrill

Charlie E. Merrill one of El Dorado County’s oldest and most respected citizens was suddenly and fatally stricken with what is thought to be neuralgia of the heart, Tuesday near the midnight hour, while on his was home from down town. He walked homeward with Newt Weymouth who lives near the Ivy House. Mr. Merrill went on to his cottage on the property owned by the late Thomas R. Stephens, but fell to the ground near the old Warren Williamson place, where he was found later by M.R. Hopkins who was on his way in from the Rising Hope mine. It is thought that death was instantaneous as the body was still warm when discovered. Mr. Hopkins summoned help from the Ivy House, and after vain attempts to bring back life, Coroner Rouff was summoned, who later impaneled a jury the verdict of which was, that death was due to heart disease induced by la grippe. Mr. Merrill had told several friends that he had suffered for a week with that malady and had thought pneumonia was impending, but it is now believed that the pains in his chest were heart attacks, and resulted in his death which he met as he had lived, - quietly and uncomplainingly.

Charles E. Merrill was a native of Peabody, Massachusetts, where he was born 76 years ago. He came to California when a young boy, and the Merrill family in the early days of Coloma were of the exclusive set of that then thriving city. Two brothers, Alfred and Oliver who lived there at that time have since passed away and another surviving brother, is a resident of Peabody, Massachusetts. In Coloma, Mrs. Merrill was in the butchering business with his brother and afterward was part owner of the Merrill and Brock toll bridge over the South Fork of the American. For about forty years, he had been a resident of Placerville during which time he held county and federal offices. He was deputy under Sheriff George H. Burnham, was County Assessor one term, Coroner and Public Administrator one term, and for ten years he was Internal Revenue Collector. He had decided musical talent, and for years he had given his services freely when and wherever he could. He was of a retiring nature, warm-hearted and generous, and though limited in worldly possessions, he leaves behind him unlimited riches in the sincere friends who mourn his loss.

Mr. Merrill was a member of Acacia Lodge, F. and A. Masons, of Coloma, and of St. James Chapter, R.A.M., and of Placerville Lodge Knights of Pythias, of this city. The funeral took place at the Methodist church, Friday afternoon, under the auspices of Palmyra Lodge of Masons, Rev. S.J. Buck officiating. The choir, of which Mr. Merrill had been a member, sang several selections and the interment was in Union Cemetery, where Don H. Goodrich, as Worthy Master, delivered the ritualistic burial service.
OBIT: Stephens, Thomas R.

The Mountain Democrat
March 1, 1913

Thos. R. Stephens Dies Suddenly

The announcement on Sunday evening of the sudden death of Thomas R. Stephens, one of Placerville’s oldest and best known residents, was a sad shock to his relatives and many friends. He had been feeling poorly for some time, but kept around as usual, and was on the street the day before his death. Saturday evening he retired early, telling his daughter and sister that he felt weak; but would not consent to calling the doctor then, though the family realized he was in need of medical attention. Between 3 and 4 o’clock the next morning, they heard him groaning in agony, and Miss Leola Fleming who boards there, called Frank Knisely, their next door neighbor, who summoned Dr. Rantz. He found Mr. Stephens suffering with acute neuralgia of the stomach, which had considerably weakened the heart. Though heroic remedies were constantly administered, he failed to respond to treatment, and shortly after the noon hour on Sunday he passed away. Thomas R. Stephens was a native of Cornwall, England, where he was born Aug. 10th 1834. The Stephens family, was one of the largest in that country at the time the subject of this sketch left Cornwall for America; the steamer upon which he sailed bringing forty-two who bore the same family name.

On arriving in this country, he lived a while at Plattsville, Wisconsin, where some of his family still reside. When a lad of eighteen he came west, and after a time spent in Nevada, he landed in El Dorado county in 1852 and engaged for awhile in mining. He went back east to visit his family and on his second trip to California he was accompanied by Oswald Hardie and members of the Hardie family including Mrs. Helen Bosworth, Mr. Hardie’s sister, both now of this city. Mr. Stephens and Mr. Hardie both went to work for Blair brothers, at the Elk Horn mill, the present site of Camino, Mr. Stephens as teamster and Mr. Hardie as sawyer, and they were close friends ever after. In the early seventies Mr. Stephens was a partner with Marco Varozza in the Shingle-Placerville stage line, which Varozza bought from H.F. Page upon the latters election to congress. Page secured the mail contract for Varozza, and he conducted the line for several years, finally selling his interest to Mr. Stephens. Prior to this time Mr. Miller, then a boy of sixteen entered the employ of Mr. Stephens, and drove the stage for several years. On the completion of the railroad to Placerville, Mr. Stephens conducted the Round Tent stables, where Robt. Blair was interested with him. In this business as in Round Tent saloon which he took on a debt, C.E. Merrill, of this city, was associated with him for fifteen years as book-keeper and manager. He was interested in a stock farm in Galt, and from there, he brought to this city at different times beautiful horses, which he took delight in driving. He also owned a tract at Arno beyond Galt.

On the 1st of June 1896 he retired from active business, partly owning to the illness of his wife who died in 1897; the transfer of his business to his cousin J.C. Stephens, was made just three weeks prior to the latters death. M. Stephens was quiet and unostentatious, but a man of generous heart and deep attachments, and, once a friend, he was always a friend as many living now, will testify. He leaves one daughter, Georgie, to whom he was devoted, and the other member of his household is his sister, Mrs. Jane Walsh, who has cared for his home for sixteen years. Three other sisters survive, who reside in Wisconsin and he leaves one brother in Oregon. Mrs. Grace Mabrey who is a grand-niece, arrived from Sacramento Sunday evening, but too late to see her uncle alive.

One proof of his unwavering attachment to his family, is the fact that for over twenty years he has sent the Democrat to a sister in the East.

Funeral services were held at the residence on Cedar Ravine street, Tuesday afternoon, at which Rev. S.J. Buck officiated, and Mrs. S.H. Rantz and A.S. Fox sang several numbers. Interment was in Union Cemetery.

The Mountain Democrat
January 4, 1913

Passing of William Johns

Wm. Johns died at the hospital last Wednesday morning after a gradual decline due to old age. He was a native of England and was seventy-nine years old. His son, John Johns, who has cared for his father for a number of years, arrived here Thursday with his wife and son, Simpson, to make arrangements for the funeral services which took place this Friday from Winchell’s undertaking rooms, with interment in Union Cemetery, Rev. S.J. Buck officiating. Another son of the deceased lives in Stockton.

Mr. Johns was an expert blacksmith and the last work he did was about three weeks ago, when he worked out at a down town shop a piece of steel into the shape of a V-shaped gong for use at the hospital, and it is thought he contracted a cold while overexerting himself. Superintendent Thalls is very proud of the bell, as well as of the workmanship.
The Mountain Democrat
February 24, 1912

Death of Scott Wilcox

The mortal remains of Scott Wilcox, a native son of Placerville, were brought to his boyhood’s home last Sunday, from Southern California, and on Monday were laid to rest by the side of his father and other relatives in the family plat in Union Cemetery.

Scott Henderson Wilcox was born in this city January 21, 1869, and lived here until 23 years of age, since which time he has traveled over a good deal of country, following mining for a livelihood. He had been a sufferer from miners’ consumption which finally resulted in his death at the Mojave Hospital, in Kern County.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.E.
DEATH: Brock, John

The Mountain Democrat
December 7, 1912

John Brock Victim of Fatal Accident

John Brock, a veteran of the Civil War, was killed at Pino Grande Monday last while in the employ of the C.D. Danaher Co. in their mill. In some unaccountable way it is supposed that, in leaning over the shaft that carries all the pulleys in the mill, a loose end of his jumper must have caught in the shaft and he was thrown against the wheels. Fellow workmen rushed to his assistance but life was extinct when his body was released. One arm was broken and one ear badly torn, but otherwise there were practically no bruises on him; and it was the opinion of Dr. Kent, who testified before the coroner’s jury, that he died from heart failure induced by the shock. Coroner Ruoff summoned his fellow workmen, all of whom held Mr. Brock in high esteem, and upon their testimony, the jury rendered a verdict of accidental death, exonerating the Company of all blame.

John Brock was a native of Indiana and was sixty-six years of age; he saw service in the Civil War, enlisting in the 20th Indiana Infantry, Co. C. He was a member of Placerville Post, No. 108, G.A.R., under whose auspices the funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from Winchell’s undertaking rooms, where Rev. E.E. Clark officiated, and Mrs. S.H. Rantz and A.S. Fox sang several appropriate numbers. Deceased is survived by two sons, John Brock Jr., who is employed by the Natoma Consolidated Co.; and Ernest Brock, who is at the Preston School in Ione. Both were present to pay the last tribute of respect to a kind and indulgent father. Interment was in Union Cemetery, where Oscar Fitch, Commander of the Post, delivered the burial service of the G.A.R.
The Mountain Democrat
December 28, 1912

Last Sad Rites

The funeral of the late Mrs. Wm. Melchior was held from the Presbyterian Church last Sunday, where many friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to an estimable woman. Rev. E.E. Clark was assisted in the impressive services by Mrs. S.H. Rantz and A.S. Fox, who sang appropriate numbers, and interment was in Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Ida Johnstone and Mrs. Alice Collett, of Winters, both sisters of Mrs. Melchoir, were here last Sunday to attend the last sad rites. Another sister, Mrs. Laura Cooper was unable to be here, as was Mrs. Melchior’s mother, Mrs. Henry Saling. Mr. Melchior’s two little daughters, Laura and Wilma returned to Winters with his wife’s relatives where they will remain for the present.

The Mountain Democrat
December 14, 1912

Mrs. Melchior Suddendly Summoned

The sudden death of Mrs. Will Melchior, of Mosquito, at the Placerville Sanatorium this Friday morning was a terrible shock to her husband, relatives and friends. She had been under treatment there for two weeks for a severe case of la grippe, having been ill at home for two weeks, before being brought here. Her lungs were clearing , and her condition seemed to be approaching normal, when an acute attack of heart dilatation in the early hours of this morning resulted fatally, before Dr. Reckers, her attending physician, could respond to the call which summoned him to her.

Mrs. Melchior was but thirty-eight years of age and was a native of Madison, Yolo county, where her mother and two sisters still reside; another sister residing in Mexico. Besides her stricken husband, she leaves two little daughters bereft of a mother’s care. Mrs. Jule Scherrer is a second cousin of the deceased. Arrangements for the funeral will be completed when the distant relatives are heard from, when interment will be made in Union cemetery. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Melchior and his children in their overwhelming sorrow.
Wrenn, was snuffed out suddenly Wednesday morning, after an illness of only two or three days. Before those in attendance upon the little fellow could realize his critical condition, he had left them.
The Mountain Democrat
October 24, 1914

Theo. Schaub Passes to Peace

Theodore Schaub, one of our best known citizens, passed away at his home in this city Saturday morning, after an extended illness from heart trouble which had later developed into pleuro-pneumonia. Surrounded by every attention that devoted care could suggest, he passed quietly away at an early hour into the endless sleep which, sooner or later, comes to all.

Theodore H. Schaub was born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1854, and came to California with his parents when about a year old. The family located at Diamond Springs, and owned what is now known as the Larkin mine property. After the death of his mother, ten years later, young Schaub, the only child, went to Oakland, where he attended school and later was in business for a number of years, coming to Placerville in 1896 as manager of the Ohio House for McKee & Melton. He afterwards conducted the same in partnership with the late Thomas Hayden, and has since made his home here, with the exception of about eighteen months spent in Oakland after his marriage to Miss Emma McConnell, who survives him.

Theo. Schaub was a man of warm heart and generous impulses, and his many acts of kindness to those less fortunate than himself added to the many friends who sincerely mourn his loss, a wealth of beautiful floral offerings testifying to their regret and sympathy.

The funeral took place at the family residence, Rev. J.W. Winkley officiating, assisted by Misses Jessie Blair, Agnes Alderson, A.S. Fox and R. Irving, with appropriate hymns. The service of the Eagles was conducted by the local Aerie for their departed brother, who belonged to an Oakland Aerie. Interment was in the family plot in Union cemetery.
OBIT: Hakemoller, William Henry

The Mountain Democrat
January 17, 1914

Mr. Hakemoller Found Dead

This community was shocked last Sunday to hear that a well known business man of Placerville, W.H. Hakemoller, had been found dead on the road near Missouri Flat. Mr. Hakemoller had gone out on Saturday to search for some horses and not finding them, had telephoned in that he would remain over night and continue the search the next day. Then word came of the finding of his dead body Sunday forenoon as stated.

Coroner Geo. A. Ruoff held an inquest Monday at 10 a.m. and the following facts were brought out: Mr. Hakemoller appeared in usual health Sunday morning, but did not ead any breakfast. He asked Charles Ramsey and Herbert Phelps to accompany him on his search for the horses, as he was stiff and sore from his long ride of the day before. Ramsey said he would do so as soon as he had finished his work, and Hakemoller saddled up and started away. Soon after a man named Jackson, who works on the Sweney place, saw Hakemoller’s horse about a mile from the house, saddled, but without a rider. He went to investigate and followed the tracks of the horse until he came to the body, about six feet from the road, lying face downward. He called Phelps and Ramsey to his assistance, and the coroner was sent for. At the inquest these witnesses testified that from all indications, Hakemoller was dead before he fell from his horse, as there was no evidence of his having been thrown. Dr. S.H. Rantz and Sheriff Hand, who went down to the scene with Coroner Ruoff, also gave their opinion as to the same fact, and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death from heart disease.

William Henry Hakemoller was born at Kelsey, this County, and was 39 years and 8 months old. He was formerly engaged in stock raising, coming here from Kelsey about three years ago, when he purchased the Round Tent Livery Stable from Fred Plunkett, which he conducted until the present time. He was a Native Son and an Odd Fellow, and these Orders had charge of the funeral; which took place Wednesday from I.O.O.F. Temple and was largely attended from all parts of the County. Rev. E.E. Clark conducted the services, assisted by Mrs. S.H. Rantz and A.S. Fox in appropriate vocal selections. The pall-bearers, representing the orders to which Mr. Hakemoller belonged were: George Rieber, James Blair, Albert Pierroz, David Hartly, James Vandergrift and Ed Alderson.

The body was laid to rest in Union Cemetery.

The deceased is survived by a widow, Mrs. Eva Hakemoller, and one child, Mildred, aged nine years.
The Mountain Democrat
June 29, 1912

Mrs. G.E. Morey Passes to Peace

Mr. H.S. Morey and Mrs. J.J. Crawford received a message Thursday morning announcing the death of their mother, Mrs. G.E. Morey, at Santa Clara, and Mr. Morey left on the afternoon motor for that place.

Mrs. Morey, who will be remembered by the older residents of Placerville, had reached the good old age of 92 years, and being a woman of strong mentality, had taken an active interest in life and the questions of the day, and voted at the recent primary election. About two months ago her general health commenced to break rapidly, so her death was not unexpected. She leaves, besides the children mentioned, another daughter, Mrs. Georgie West, of San Jose; and two sons, Ross, of Visalia and Ed. of Oregon. She leaves several grandchildren, among them being, Miss Bertha Crawford, of this city, Mrs. Thos. H. Lane, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Fred Crawford, of Portland, Ore; Mrs. Samuel Eva and Arthur Morey, of San Francisco; and Frank Morey, of this city, besides several great-grandchildren.

In accordance with her wishes, the body will be cremated at San Jose and the interment will be in the family plat in this city, probably Sunday.

(Transcribers note: Buried in Union Cemetery. Headstone says her name is Abi Morey.)
OBIT: Irwin, Eunice E. (Garfield)

The Mountain Democrat
January 4, 1913
Page 6

A Devoted Mother Passes to Peace

Another loved mother in Israel passed to the reward of the faithful on Wednesday, at 3:30 a.m., when Mrs. Eunice E. Irwin breathed her last at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thos. O. Hardie, on Main street. Mrs. Irwin had been in feeble health for several years, and had suffered much pain, with angelic sweetness and patience. Her last illness was the result of a fall sustained several weeks ago; since when, a shaking palsy, from which she had suffered a long time, gave way to symptoms of paralysis and she sank into restful, quiet sleep, to wake in another world.

Eunice E. Irwin (nee Garfield) was born March 31, 1833, in Oakland county, Michigan. In 1852 she left home, joined an emigrant train for California and landed at Sacramento, in September, 1852. She later met the late Charles F. Irwin and they were married at Sacramento, Aug. 22, 1855, and moved to Diamond Springs, this county, where they resided until 1867, when they moved to Placerville, where on the 1st day of January, 1868, Mr. Irwin entered upon his duties as County Judge, which office he held until 1880. Since the death of Judge Irwin in 1901, she has resided at the old home in the city, with her daughter, Mr. T.O. Hardie. Three children were born to them, Mrs. Minnie E. McClure, now of Berkeley; Fred Irwin and Ada M. Hardie, of this city; and six grandchildren. Ada, Samuel Irwin, and Robt. D. McClure, Alma B. and Irwina Hardie, and Anda Irwin.

Mrs. Irwin was devoted to her home life, where her affections centered and where her dainty little figure and sweet face will be most sadly missed. She had often talked calmly of passing from earth and had made several requests in that connection, among them that there be no floral display, and that her pall bearers be selected from the Native Sons rather than place the responsibility upon the few friends remaining from former years. These requests were faithfully carried out by her children, whose loving care surrounded her to the last.

Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church this Friday at 2 p.m., Rev. E.E. Clark officiating, and a quartette including Miss M. Carpenter, Mrs. S.H. Rantz, A.S. Fox and Prof. Wm. Bland rendered several selections, after which interment was made in the family plot in Union Cemetery, the following serving as pall bearers: J.F. Limpinsel, Geo. Schiff, Max Mierson, P.S. Tracy, Warren Larkin, and Abe Darlington.
P. Bennett, Thos. Clark, E.W. Witmer, S.G. Beach and Chas.
