I think I found my family in the 1850 census at the 49er settlement at Mathenias Creek in El Dorado.

Does anyone know where that is, exactly?

I think I also found relatives (or close friends) at Horse Shoe Bar in Sutter County, and I'd like to know how far apart the two 49er settlements are.

This is a creek that is located southeast of the town of El Dorado. It is also known as Martinez Creek and Matheny Creek. It would not be surprising to find people enumerated at this location as all the creeks and streams in 1850 in El Dorado County were filled with placer miners.

My family was back in Missouri by 1853.

But, I do want to check with the courthouse to see if they left any records while they were in California. I suppose there wouldn't have been an El Dorado courthouse back then. What is the most likely place to find records if they left any?

This has records dating as early as about 1851. Earlier records exist in another volume that is not indexed online.

In Mathenias Creek, my family is the Warren's:

Martin Warren
William R. Warren
Harrison Warren

Whoever digitized the census on Ancestry got their birth state wrong. If you look carefully at the copy of the original, you'll see a difference between "Ia" and "Iowa". The Warren's were born in Indiana.

I think their father was also with them, but he's not on the census. I think his name was George W. Warren born in Kentucky.

Harrison returned to Carroll County Missouri. One of the brothers died on the return trail. I don't know what happened to the other brother.

They may have been traveling with Benjamin Parker.

In Horse Shoe Bar is Abraham Brunk. He is related to the wife of the family whom the rest of my Warren family was living with back in Carroll County (George and Elizabeth Burkhart).

It appears that Abraham was with someone named T. Williams in Horse Shoe Bar. According to a Brunk researcher, Abraham Brunk died in Califiornia.

There were a lot of problems with the CA State Census of 1852 and with the original indexing of the census by the D.A.R. Many people were missed and probably many counted more than once.
