Pre-1930 Churches in Colusa, Arbuckle, Grimes

Does anyone know which churches existed in Colusa County in the early 1900s? Do any old church records, or transcriptions of them, exist? I'm particularly interested in churches near Colusa, Arbuckle, or Grimes which would have attracted German immigrants like my ancestors.

In a 1906 biography of my great-great grandpa Peter Ossenbriggen, it says, "The family are adherents of the Lutheran denomination, Mr. Ossenbruggen having become a member of that church before leaving Germany."

A 1918 biography of Peter's brother-in-law John Kissling states, "His religious views conform to the doctrines of the German Reformed Church, in which belief he was reared."

Another brother-in-law, Peter Kissling, "...and his wife adhere to the tenets of the Lutheran Church, in which they were reared," as stated in his 1918 biography.

Although it is probably a gross oversimplification, I equate "Lutheran" with "non-Catholic."

I am looking for my Great Grandmother Sarah E. Winters' grave site.
I can find her name in the Colusa Vol. 1 for Arbuckle, College City, & St. Johns, Grand Island Cemeteries. We thought it was in Grand Island Cemetery, which is where they farmed in the late 1880's. She died in 1888. However, we could not find it on a visit nor did we find it on your separate list just for Grand Island. That may just leave me with Arbuckle, College City and John's.

Can anyone help direct me how to find out if she and her Grandson, John Dawson Winters (also on the Vol. 1 list) are in one of the four cemeteries and if so which one?

If anyone can provide any help or guidance, it would be greatly appreciated.

hartungc@aol.com
Craig Winters Hartung
Fairfield CA

707-434-1361 wk
Seeking death record/obit re William Charles Doughty died (1888-1897)

I am a descendant of William Charles Doughty & his wife Dora Viola Truesdell. I believe he was born in Missouri abt 1840.
The couple had 4 children. Their youngest child,Robert Jackson Doughty, was born 25 Nov 1888 in Arbuckle, Colusa Co. I believe William Charles died sometime between 1888 & 1897. It is possible the family was living in Colusa at the time of William Charles Doughty's death.
By 1900 Dora was living in Anderson Township, Shasta Co. Her married name was Coffin. Robert & his sibling, Chester were living with her. (Dora married William Coffin abt. 1897, place of marriage unknown.)
The family moved many times over the years.
William Charles Doughty is my brickwall. I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks in advance.
Judy
I am looking for other researchers who know anything about the BONDs who settled in Colusa County in the 1880s. My ancestor was Frederick John Bond, although he went by John Bond. I am also interested in anyone who has ties to the Brookins. My ancestor is Edwin Brookins (b. 1814 in Vermont); some of his offspring, possibly through his son Alanson or Robert, ended up staying in Colusa. I know I found Edwin there in the 1870 census.
--Noel
In a previously posted message I asked for information on Halsey Hadley, who lived in COLUSA Co. at least from 1870-73. I have been recently been informed that he and Joanna Peyton were married, we think in COLUSA Co. in 1863, so now I'm looking for more on Joanna Peyton. They had at least three sons, one named John Charles born in 1868 and still living in 1873, another died soon after birth, unnamed, in August 1870, and another born in 1866 and died prior to 1873.
Halsey (or Holsey)Hadley, married Nancy Swabb in Clermont, OH in 1844, and they had several children. In about 1865 he left the children with his brother, Benjamin Elbridge Hadley in IL and went to California. (Nancy may have been dead by then.) He married Joanah in CA, and at least from 1870 to March 1873 was living in Colusa County. He and Joanah had three boys and by 1873 two were dead. I have been unable to find any trace of him later than a letter of March 1873 to his brother Ben. Any information would be appreciated, and that which I have I will share.
Early Settlers of Stony Creek

In THE HISTORY OF COLUSA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA by Will S. Green, reference is made to some early pioneers of Stony Creek who were settled there by 1855-56. Besides the LETTs (our line) who are named, we would like to find more information on Daniel JOHNSON who is also named to learn if there's a connection with Jack Lett's wife, Anna Eliza Johnson. Would very much appreciate hearing from any descendants of the above Surname list mentioned in Green's book.
Colusa County Cemetery, Vol.1 lookup for Hoernlein/Hornlein

I would appreciate it if someone would look up for me, in Vol 1, Arbuckle, the information relating to the Hornlein surname. There are 12 names listed in the index, all on page 8.

Also, on page 9, Agnes, Frank and Ralph S. Hoernlein; and on page 14, Josie Theo and Oscar F. Hoernlein.

I hope this is not asking too much. But I thought, since they are mostly on the same page, it might not be too large a task.

One of my RHEUDE ancestors (Albert Andrew) married Lydia I. Hornlein, whose father is Emil G. Hornlein and Amelia Price.

Thank you,
Mary Read

BIRTH OR BAPTISM RECORD LOOKUP-FRANK (LAST NAME)

May 3rd, 2007 Thursday 10:10 p.m.

I am looking at the counties surrounding Butte County in case the children were born outside of Butte County.

Can somebody lookup birth & or baptism records for me please. I am looking for my grandmothers side of the family. The last name they were using on the 1880 Census for Oregon City in Butte County in CA was FRANK. On the 1st 10 or so pages of this census it says City Of Cherokee. My family is Portuguese so there is a possibility they are using the last name spelled FRANCK, FRANCISCO, FRANCISCA, FRANCA, MARTIN OR HENRIQUES. Or the last name spelling starting with FRA. HENRIQUES is the maiden name of the mother Mary. I was told that Portuguese people usually didn't use there birth names when they came to the U.S., that is why I have given a few differant spellings. The mother & fathers names are Martin & Mary both born in Portugal or The Azores.

Here are the childrens names.
Frank, Mary Born CA (Most Likely instead of MA) 1875
Frank, Frank (Yes they named one of there children Frank Frank) Born 1877
Manuel Born 1879 or 1880

There are possibly 4 other children that were born after the 1880 census. Josephine, Alice Rena & May/Mae and Martin. My grandmother Alice Rena Frank (Franck) married my grandfather Gus Foster Rowe approx. 1908.

I have been looking for my grandmothers side of the family for 14 months now with no luck. I am grasping at straws and loosing hope of ever finding them and would appreciate any help.

You can email me at tex61@bellsouth.net

THANK YOU VERY MUCH,
KIM ROWE

I am looking for any information on my grandmothers side of the family. Her name was Harriet Evelyn SIMMONS. She married Henry BECKLEY and they had 8 children. I know they lived on the levee in Meridian and had a dairy farm. My grandfather died in 1920 of a ruptured appendix and my grandmother later remarried a man named William HAVILAND. I know that Henry BECKLEY's mother was Letitia KILGORE and his father was Gabriel BECKLEY, but I know nothing of my grandmothers SIMMONS family. She was born in 1889 and died in 1979. I know that they lived in Colusa County for many years and I would appreciate any information you could supply me. Thank you, Laurie. She was born in 1913 and am guessing she was about 8 to 12 years of age at that time. I have a picture of her teacher and class. The picture was taken out of doors in front of an old big tree. I am interested in the name of the school and where it is or was, and a picture of it. Also any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

1860's in Colusa County

Hi all, I'm trying to find out what was going on in Colusa County in the 1860's. I'm researching Jacob Kleinsmith, a donation land claim holder from Oregon, who is enumerated on the 1860 census in Colusa county. He is living with several other men who are also DLC holders and they are raising stock. I'm curious as to why they are here while filing DLC's in Oregon. Thanks for any help you can give,
Carolin in Oregon

All I have is "PORTER, Elizabeth L 45" with no indication of even the cemetery where it was recorded. I suspect it may be in Arbuckle. If so, and there's someone who may have an occasion to visit that cemetery and could photograph the gravestone for me, I would be most grateful.
Thanks much!
Robert Todd Powell buried Colusa Community Cemetery 1912, Jeremiah Powell buried Colusa Community Cemetery 1886, other Powell family members buried here also. Census studies show they lived in Grand Island, Spring Valley township, Colusa township and Colusa Town. Marriage records indicated girls married into the Arnold, White, Thomas & King families. Most were farmers but D. H. Arnold was shown as sheriff in one account. I am searching for descendants up to present day. Jeremiah Powell was my 1st cousin 4x removed and Robert Todd was my GGG uncle. These are the 1st of my Powell relatives to emigrate to California to the best of my knowledge. They came from Indiana, Illinois & Missouri.

I descend from a Frederick John BOND (b. circa 1860 in Ohio); he had a son named Edward John BOND who is buried in Colusa. Other BONDs in the area who I may be related to include John and Johanna BOND, Joshua BOND, and Ezra BOND. My family has lost touch with the BONDs; my mother's grandmother was a BOND.

Sincerely,

Noel

I need help locating an obituary for Mabel Mae (Burt) Wehr, who passed away in Colusa County, California on March 12, 1979. Her first husband was ? Laux and they had a son, Earl R. Laux who passed away in Colusa County on November 21, 1887; I would also like to find his obituary if possible.

Mabel's second husband was Harry E. Wehr, who passed away on April 24, 1967 and is buried at the Willows Cemetery in Willows (Glenn Co.), California. I assume that Mabel is buried in Colusa near her son, because she wasn't buried in the Willows Cemetery near her husband, Harry.

Any help anyone could offer in finding her obituary in a Colusa County newspaper would greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Hal Armstrong

I am a descendent of Stephen and Hannah Wade Wilmarth, who were born and married and raised a family of 11 children in Chepachet, RI 1825-1853, at which time they immigrated to Ogle County, Illinois. Stephen and Hannah were my great great grandparents. George Wade Wilmarth was one of their last children, born in 1843, and shows up in the 1860 census in Ogle Co. Ill. at age 17. After that, he simply disappears and is not buried in the family cemetery. Recently, I found a sentence in the Ogle Co. links page that said simply ... "died Colusa, Ca, 1870... which would have made him only 27.

I would so appreciate ANY information on him and Colusa Co. I am going to try to find out from the source of that statement where he got the information. Is George Wade Wilmarth buried in Colusa Co? Is there a shred of information about him? There is a remote possiblity that he is related to "Miranda Wilmarth Lux," who died in 1894 and was a benefactor of the Miranda Lux Foundation in San Francisco.

Any information will be a gift to me.
