Tolman's parents were cousins Thomas Gann, b 1817 in Tennessee, d in California, and Roseanna Gann, b 1819 in Tennesse, d probably in California, m 1839 in Lafayette Co., Mo. Delilah's parents were Rawleigh/Rolly Strader, b 1809 in Kentucky, d 1865 in Coles Co., Ill., and Sarah H. Some members of the Coles Co., Ill., Strader family are believed to have first come to California's Gold Rush country in 1849-50, followed by a second group in 1865. ON SNOW SHOES - On Monday evening, the 6th instant, a party arrived at Silver Mountain, on snow shoes, consisting of A.H. STEVENS, Esq., Mrs. A.H. STEVENS, their daughter, Miss Caddie STEVENS, aged 16 summers, and their son, a bright little boy of 6 years of age, from Cottage Springs, 39 miles from Silver Mountain, on the Big Tree road. The Monitor 'Gazette' pronounces it "The greatest feat of the age," and says: "Think of this, ye proud mothers and daughters of the valleys, who fear lest the winds of heaven should waft a zephyr too rudely upon you, of 2 of your sister braving the tempestuous Sierras in mid winter over a 'pass' of 10,000 feet above the level of the sea, the snows 22 feet deep, and calling it a pleasure trip."

Asa Creswell, was born in Illinois in abt. 1828.
Have seen the middle initial as J and S.
He was married to Lavina Jane Washburn, b:1831, TN, d: 1901, Stockton, San Joaquin Co.CA.

I am looking for the burial place of Asa Creswell.
I have been told that he died in the hospital in San Andreas.
He was a miner and teamster by trade.
He appears in the 1880 census for Calaveras co.
and then nothing further.
His children were: Anna, William, Lena W., James F.,
Curtis, James Warren, Asa Curtis, PEARL MAUD,( my husbands
Mervin L. Purdy's) Grandmother; Martha Delia, and Alice.
(Also have the name of Christopher Columbus Creswell), and one Unnamed Baby girl.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find out if Michel Marchel's death certificate states a place of birth other than "Other Country" (dod 7/19/1946). He is my great grandmother's cousin. My great grandfather - Fredrick Orth - met Michel in Murphys in the late 1880s. Fredrick then went back to Alsace region and returned with a quite younger wife. I have been told that Michel Marchal was my great grandmother's cousin. Neither of my direct ancestors had a place of birth on their certs.

Would especially like more information on Mary Mitchell Prather Anderson, she is my gg grandmother.

Bio of James Prather, says the family moved for awhile to Surprise Valley and then returned to San Joaquin County---I've never been able to find them in San Joaquin county, was happy to finally find them in Calaveras.

Land record index shows AR Anderson purchasing land in Calaveras county in 1872 with military script.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Albina BUCHELLA b 12/3/1894 d 4/1/1972 m. (?) LAGOMARSINO. They had at least three children: Russell Henry b 1911, Melvin C. b 1914, and Albina born & died 1929. All children were born in Calaveras Co.

I know that Albina was born in CA. Not sure where or who her parents were. I also am trying to find out who she married. I do know that he wasn't born in Calaveras Co. according to the Calaveras County birth index, however he is related to the Lagomarsino's in Cal. Co.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has access to the Cal. Co. birth index and could check for Albina BUCHELLA I would be thankful.

Could somebody please look at the 1860 Census and look up William Goodwillie (Wm. Goodwillie) and tell me his occupation, where he lived and whom he lived with?
Much is written about his brothers and sisters, but all I could find on him is that he went to California in 1850, stayed about 12 years and died in Woonsocket, South Dakota in 1890. I have a feeling he was the family black sheep, and therefore, probably the most interesting.

James Burns McClenahan married Celeste B. Smith in Copperopolis, Calaveras County, in 1864. He was superintendant of the Copperopolis mine in 1879. He was reportedly also in law enforcement.. Had a daughter, Martha Annie, born in Telegraph City in 1872. Are there any records remaining of the Copperopolis mine? Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

I have found Josiah Learned married 3rd wife Sarah. Nancy Learned was Josiah's daughter from 2nd wife Saphronia. I find Sarah , sons Oscar and Albert in Murphys in 1880 census and Mrs Learned home identified on 1876 map of murphys. In a 1965 map of murphys a writeup with the map says Oscar Learned's father (Josiah) was murdered by Joe Wade on a moonlit night almost in the front yard of Oscar's home. Does anyone have the history of Learned's in Murphys and what the real story of Josiah may be and where he may be buried?

It appears in the CA Birth Index that my grandmother, May Beatrix (Head) Noland, may have given birth in Calaveras Co. on 11-Dec-1918 to a son, Walter Noland. (The father was William A. Noland.) Unfortunately, Walter does NOT show up in the 1920 census, when the family was living in Stanislaus Co., so I can only assume that he passed on before then. I'd appreciate any info on Walter's birth or death.

I hope someone can help me locate a cemetery record or an obituary for Marietta Stephens, wife of Albert Stephens. She may have died in childbirth on 17 Feb 1897, or sometime within the next two months. I have probate documents for her brother's estate dated in Apr and May 1897, and she is not listed among the surviving siblings.

I have obituaries for both her husband Albert and their oldest son Franklin T. Stephens, which indicate they were both buried in Altaville Cemetery.

SUICIDE of a BOY -- A Strange Case -- On last Monday a youth about 18 years, named Charles F. BURCE, employed for some months in the office of Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express at Mokelumne Hill, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a revolver. He was alone in the office at the time, and the motives which prompted the deed cannot be conjectured. He was a youth of quiet, orderly habits, given to industry, and had at times an appearance of melancholy. It is possible that the shooting may have
been accidental, resulting from a careless handling of the pistol; but the general impression is that, under temporary mental aberration, he committed suicide. His father and mother reside at the Hill.

Looking for info on Hezekiah Sheckels (b. 1830 VA). He is listed in Township 4, Calaveras Co., in the 1860 CA Census with William Kye and the 2 of them were miners. Hez had 2 brothers, James and John, living nearby in Amador Co. that same year.

Hez was the son of Peter Sheckels and Elizabeth Harris. The family lived in Frederick Co., VA, area in the early 1830's and moved to MO in the late 1830's, settling and resettling several times, finally locating in Randolph Co. by 1849.

Hez disappears from the records after 1860, both in CA and MO. Any info on his whereabouts would be greatly appreciated!

He is on the 1930 Census living with his aunt, ANNA PETTIGREW (or Pettegrew) and her husband, JOHN W. PETTIGREW in Oakland.

His father was born in CA and his mother was born in KANSAS. It looks like his father was the son of JOHN MOFFITT of Rhode Island, and CAROLINE STARKEY AINSWORTH of California.

Lode Man Killed as Car Overturns
San Andreas – Sam Dabovich of Wallace, a Mokelumne Hill bartender, was killed instantly Sunday night when his car overturned, pinning him beneath it.
The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. on the San Andreas-Mokelumne Hill Road. Dabovich’s car is reported to have first struck the right embankment of the road, continued for about 100 feet and struck the left embankment before it overturned.
Dabovich, a native of Jackson, is survived by his mother, Mrs. Joava (Joana) Dabovich; three sisters, Ann Dabovich, Mrs. Violet Battaglia and Mrs. Laurence Sorasu, all of Sutter Creek, and two brothers, Danjen (Dante) Dabovich, of Sutter Creek and Dan Dabovich of Vacaville.

George W. COX killed his son-in-law (last name unknown) in Calaveras Co., CA. and was executed in that county Aug. 31, 1888, the last man hung in the jail yard. He was interviewed by a reporter before his execution, and gave some family data. George Wasshington Cox is buried in Peoples Cemetery, San Andreas, Calaveras County, California. I am assuming he was executed in San Andreas. Does anyone know of this happening or have access to the newspaper interview referred to? John Gabbert was born 1813 in Cumberland Co, KY. He married Lodicy or Lodicia Hughes(born 1827) in 1841 in Andrew Co, MO. In 1850 his wife(under the name Luditha Gabbert) is living with the family of Jesse Cox(relationship?) in Andrew Co, MO with 3 small children: James 6, William 3 and Jacob 1.
According to one Gabbert researcher John moved to Calaveras Co, MO but no date is given, and died in 1889. In 1851 in Andrew Co, MO Martin VanSchoiack married a Lydia Gabbert. My question is why did John go to CA without his wife. Divorce?
