I am not related to the family, but I do have a little bit of information that I can share about the children of George and Henrietta (nee JOHNSON) AVERY. The couple had at least 13 children, some of whom died in infancy. Those who I have been able to locate in records are:

Morton Peter AVERY (1877-1943)- died in Alameda County.
Harriet AVERY-HANCOCK (1879-1965)- died in San Joaquin County.
Edith AVERY-SEGALE (1882-1942)- died in Calaveras County.
Maude AVERY-WELLS (1883-1974)- died in Washoe County, Nevada.
Georgia AVERY-MANUEL (1885-1910)- died in San Joaquin County.
Mary AVERY-PADDOCK (1889-1983)- died in Los Angeles County.
Helen AVERY-HILL (1895-1986)- died in Sacramento County.

Interested in the family of Peter and Nancy Avery who came to Copperopolis from Calais, Maine, in the 1860s. They had one son, George J., who lived at Murphys and later became the first postmaster of Avery, CA in 1885. Known children of George J. and wife Henrietta were Morton P. Avery and Hattie B. Avery. Hoping to learn when and where Peter and Nancy died and are buried, and anything else about the family. Are there any descendants? Is anyone else interested in this family?

Louie Fahily was married to my Grandmother Stella.
I live in Jackson. I lived with Louie and my grandmother in San Andreas when I was a young girl. Our Family did not know Louie in 1950 or 60, My Grandmother knew him however they did not marry until around 1969 or 1970.
I would love to see the photo album you have. I know Louie raised a couple of step daughters that are alive and they would be happy to have pictures. One I remember was named Myrna. There are streets around his old house that are named for the girls.

Many of the Collins names you listed are buried in Calaveras County. Amos Wright Collins is buried in Jenny Lind Cemetery and so is his wife Susie Phillips Collins. There is a divorce file at the county archives for Percy H. Collins and his wife Irma L. that might be a family member.
Amos has a probate file at the county archives which might provide more documented info on his children and property he may have owned when he died. There is also a 1879 probate for a John Collins and one for a Robert Lewis Collings, Susie Collins and William G. Collins.
The county charges $10 for research and 25cents a page plus mailing for making copies and it might be worthwhile to have these files looked at and anything interesting copied. You can reach the Archivist at calaverasarchives@att.net
Currently the archives are only open 2 days a week due to budget cuts and they may end up closed totally if the budget for Calaveras County gets worse.
I can do a bit of research on births, marriage, deaths from the county indexes if you give me names of the women and men in the family. There are quite a few older Collins females getting married and some of them may be family members. You mentioned an Oddessa who may be Laura "Dessa" who married George Willis for instance.

Edwin Barkley Hellums is in the Calaveras Co. Death Index with the DOB 1/13/1887 in Miss. and DOD 2/21/1943 San Joaquin Co. His mother's maiden name is listed as Robertson.
There is only one other Hellums listed: Lorena N. Hellums DOB 10/16/11903 in Denton TX. DOD 8/18/1993 in Placerville. Age 89. Res. of Douglas Flat, Calaveras Co. RN at the Bret Harte Sanitarium in Murphys. Granddaughter Carole Peruse. This info came from the Angels Mortuary Book # 11, page 49.
I checked the marriage, birth, divorce and probate indexes and there is nothing else in Calaveras Co. on that last name.

His occupation as listed on his death certificate was molder. Edwin had been in California for 26 years at the time of his death and lived at 2820 Florida Ave., Stockton, San Joaquin, CA.

Great. I also live still in Northern California, as do many other descendants of Henry Bennett Collins's son Benjamin. I have been in contact with Gloria, descendant of Alvin Collins, who has also posted on here, so I am not sure what I can add by way of information, but I'll provide what I can. I would love any information you can give on family's history, if you know anything about Henry Bennett Collins, his past, how or when they settled in California, and what you might know about Spencer and his siblings. I would also be interested in some basic information on Spencer's history and descendants. What I am most interested in at this point, though, is any primary documents or pictures. I would be interested in a picture of Spencer. Are any of his siblings in any pictures? As I indicated, the photo I have seen (a cousin has it) has Benjamin and a "brother" who is apparently older. It may be Spencer or Alvin perhaps. He has a moustache and it is c. 1850. As for Spencer's line, where, in general, did they settle? Calaveras, apparently. Anywhere else? I know that Benjamin Collins was living in Empire in Stanislaus County at the time of the 1880 census, and I know that some of his fmaily lived all up and down the San Joaquin Valley although my great-grandfather, his son Miles, settled in the Bay Area. I have some census info for Henry Bennett Collins, but only up through 1860. Do you have any? Well, that's rambling and disjointed, but it's a start.

Hi. I am descended from Benjamin Collins, son of Henry Bennett Collins, who lived at various times in the late 19th century in Stanislaus Co and Oregon. I was not aware of other Collins relatives who lived in Calaveras or that area, but suspected that there may be some. What information, pictrues, or documents do you have? I have very little and the only thing I have from before my great-grandfather Miles is one dark, old picture of Benjamin Collins and one of his brothers.

Elmer and Mary Osborn were Reggie's parents. Elmer was a son of Samual Thomas Osborn, who was a son of George Washington Osborn.

My great grandmother, Edna May Osborne, was Elmer's sister. She married William James Stuart Thomson.

Edward Hanford was the son of Charles Hanford, a tailor, in New York State. After fighting for the Union in the Civil War he came to California and worked in the mine at Sheep Ranch until his accidental death. He was married to Emma Nuner and left her with 4 young children.

Thanks for the information. It all helps. I think the Alviso's had a quiet life and after Benito and Teresa left for Windsor, in 1883, they returned to Mexico in 1886.

TAX ASSESSMENTs
Juan Arviso Year: 1868. Located on the south side of the Calaveras River and known as the Arviso Ranch. 1 wagon, 3 cattle, 12 goats, 4 horses or mules, hay and grain, 1 dog. Land assessed at $300. (not sure if this is Juan Alviso because he signed his name Arviso)

Juan Alviso. Year 1880. 1 wagon, 4 Spanish horses, 5 calves, 25 goats, 25 kids, 9 hogs, furniture, 12 chickens, 1 dog, one dwelling house tax on it: $25. Residence: Jenny Lind. (this time the name is clearly signed Alviso)

I did not check every tax assessment book, only those two years.
Other than the tax assessments that show he was in the county, I could find no other record of Juan Alviso. He did not show in the Great Registry of Voters, is not in the death records etc. Like many, he probably lived a quiet life and left little record to show what he did or anything else about his family.

She was the daughter of James Avise b. 20 Dec 1828 in Skulltown, Glouster Co. NJ d. 14 Jan 1912 Jackson, Calaveras Co CA who married 23 July 1863 Margaret Stevenson b. 26 Jan 1845 in Indiana near the Wabash river. Laura Emily Avise was one of 11 children born to this marriage. All children were born in the Avise Home in Jackson, Calaveras Co. CA.

I index births, marriages and deaths that show in the Calaveras County papers, mortuary books etc so we can help people search for their ancestors. There are no books or lists of such records available to the public. The county recorders office does have all old birth, marriage and death certificates but they are not set up to do look-ups for anyone.
There must have been a reason that Cleora Mae Thornton was living in Calaveras County. There are other Thornton names listed but I have no way to know if they are tied to her or not. We only have info on Calaveras County so you should post on the Santa Clara County message board to see if someone there might be able to help with the Collum name.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. Until this very moment, I didn't know where to look for her 3rd husband. Could you tell me what book you are using? I have a truck load of Collums who died in Santa Clara County. Would this book cover that area and how do I purchase it?

I just checked the death index again for the Thornton name and found this death: Thornton, Billy Wayne Born 12/14/1932 Abilene, TX. Died 07/16/1980 Murphys, CA. Recorded in Book 15, Page 202. Buried in Murphys, CA: Protestant Cemetery. Age 47 yrs. Funeral charged to Cleora Thornton. Korean War veteran. Suicide. Merchant. Married. ( Info from Angels Mortuary Bk. 5, p. 285)

I am trying to find an obituary for my 2ND cousin. Her name was Cleora Mae Thornton and she died on 3-9-1990. Her last known address was in Altaville, Calaveras County, California. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

I would love to find her two living grandchildren also. Here is what I know about her. She was born 5/30/1924 in Yavapai County, Arizona. She was the daughter of Luther Baker Collum and Mary Halcomb Keese. She married Ralph Esler Monroe, and they had one daughter, Joyce. Joyce married Devin Thompson and had two children.

The only info on the Barut family I can find in the Calaveras Co. records is a death notice in the Calaveras Chronicle dated 9/6/1884 that Joseph Barut had died in Oakland on Aug. 28, 1884. His parents were Juliette and Raymond Barut and his age was given as 25 years, 9 months, 25 days.

CHURCH BELL FOR COPPEROPOLIS - A steel bell from the celebrated foundry in Sheffield, England, (in weight, about equal to that of the Presbyterian Church in this city), was forwarded yesterday by Messrs. W. FOGARTY & Co., to Copperopolis, where it will be erected upon a Catholic church now in progress of building. Its music will wake the slumbering echoes of the hills for miles around the village and week after week it will invite an assembly of worshippers to the foot of the altar, occasionally sounding a requiem over the green graves of loved ones, and never failing, under whatever circumstances, to cast a chastening spell over the spirit of all who cherish a recollection of the music of church bells in other lands.
