Hi Brigette,
I do have the death cert. It indicates that he was buried in Sutter Creek Cemetery. His remains were handled by Daneri Mortuary, a family business still in business in Jackson, CA. However, their records of 1931 are minimal, and do not include any additional details. He has no headstone in Sutter Creek (that I can find), and I suspect he is near his Mother and Father. I was hoping for more details from an obituary.
Warm Wishes, Bill

Hi:
There was a widow, Mrs. Tibbitts, who was the postmistress at Plymouth until the Republicans won the White House with General Eisenhower. That meant that the local Republicans could decide on postmaster jobs so Glenn Nance became postmaster. I remember that many in the town were upset when Mrs. Tibbitts lost her job.
She lived on the little lane in back of the Plymouth Hotel parallel to Main St. It ended on Empire St. As one drove west up the little hill on the lane - her house was on the left. I believe it was the only house on the lane.
I left Plymouth in 1951 and don't remember if she was still in residence then.
Regards,
Nancy
Hi:
I have a copy of the 1927 History of Amador County published by the Amador County Womens Clubs. It is basically a interview with the oldtimers in the county so is a hit or miss situation.
There is but one mention of Del Porto (of any spelling). I am pasting it below.
Nan
= = = = = = = =
From page 56 of the 1927 History of Amador County by the Amador County Womens Clubs.

Page 56

The Chinese Church was close by; also a Chinese
kitchen, where excellent foods were served. The
county was full of Irish and Germans in the early
days. Antone Rickert had a huge pavilion at the Old
Toll House, and Mrs. Rickert collected the tolls.
This is on the bend of the road as one enters Jackson
from the Kennedy Grade, at the free camp grounds.
The Turn Verein met here for singing, and balls were
always given in this pavilion, the May Day Ball
being especially fine. Shade trees of cedar and pine
and live oak made a beautiful grove, and little
summer houses were placed in close proximity
toward town, This was a beer garden, where men
brought their families of an evening, and met their
friends in friendly chat. On ball nights, one of the
larger houses was set aside for the young children,
with a woman in charge. Women were scarce so
every married lady helped to make up a quadrille.
The beer was made by August Trenchel, who
owned the place John Strohm now owns, the first
brewery in Jackson. The hill back of it was named
Trenchel’s Hill, and the Indians, sometimes
numbering 400, held their fandango there. The
white people paid money to witness these rites.
Across from the brewery, where the handsome
homes of George Thomas and Mrs. Esther Dal Porto
stand, stood Trenchel’s beer garden, cool and
inviting under spreading trees. When the regiment
under Captain Cooledge was ready to start for
Arizona during the Civil War, it was stationed in the
Pavilion, pending final arrangements. It is said that
sectional feeling ran so high, democratic fathers were
not permitted to tell their sons “Good-bye”. It is also
stated that that is untrue. Take your choice
Hi:
I looked at our index of the 1927 History of Amador Co. by the Amador Women's Club - there is no Dobbins of any spelling.
I used the Library of Congress Chronicling of America and searched the Amador Ledger 1850 to 1922 and found several mentions of a Rev. Hugh Dobbins. Also spotted a local Pine Grove column signed "Dobbins" - which may mean the columnist's signature - not sure.
I wonder how Dobbins, California got its name?
Regards,
Nan

Interesting. We believe "our" Minnie Mugford [1866-1909]married Henry Meiss, son of Louis and Elizabeth[Dorn]MEISS in 1887.

I think I've seen bits and pieces of info on Christian MEISS and there seems to be a number of people researching the surname.

The MUGFORDs and MEISSs do seem to be mixed in a bit.
That would be great if you would copy the Horton information for me. I am researching John Quincy Horton who married Mary Ann Graham and moved to Amador county in about 1856 after a couple years near San Bernardino. His wife Mary Ann was killed in 1893 when her horse took off running and she and a friend a Mrs. Metcalf were thrown from the cart. Mary was killed outright and Mrs. Metcalf was injured so bad they did not expect her to live. Wiley's station was mentioned in the article. I live in Iowa and do not have access to any of the information for this family. The John Kite family lived in Amador county for 12 years and then returned to Iowa in the late 1860's. John Kite's wife Angeline was a sister to Mary Ann Graham Horton.

In a newpaper account of a family member who died near Ione in Amador County when she was thrown from a carriage in 1893, it says her husband received the message at Wiley's Station where he was trying to get some cattle moved out of the mountains. He came back the next day so it must be a ways from Ione to Wiley's Station. Can anyone tell me where Wiley's Station was located? Thank you.

Carol,

As usual, you're probably way ahead of me, so this is probably old news. Last night, I was playing around with the censuses for Hudson County. I tried different spellings for our Giusto, and BINGO. I found Gregory and his family in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. His wife's name is listed as Polonia and Pauline. There are other children I hadn't had before. Try using Guisto, which was probably just the enumerator's spelling of the surname.

Steve Illum, stevef_i@yahoo.com

Hi,
I met your grandfather one time in Sutter Creek. I dated Ethelyn Thornesberry's son James Grier for 5 years from the years 1983 until 1989. I only know what Jim told me about him, he was married to Jim's mother from the time Jim was 12years old until your grandfather died. Jim died in October 2000 or I would have been able to give you his number and he could have told you a lot I'm sure. I visited Ethelyn a few times after Morton ("Bob" they called him) died. Jim was loved by everybody that met him but he didn't have anything nice to say about his stepdad...sorry about that. Did you know him at all? Email me if you'd like to. Sincerely, Renee Smith
sharonreneesmith@yahoo.com

I have an incredible connection to share with you! The Linda Steinman who married your Philip Chinn is my great grandmother on my mother's side. She was previously married to George Steinman who died in the Agonaut Mine disaster when my grandfater, Warren George Steinman was only months old. Linda Steinman was Linda Tucker before she married George Steinman. Tucker is her maiden name. My grandfather Warren is still living. He just turned 87. He has information on his step-brothers which I can obtain if you like. My name is Adda Caldwell, my mother is Marguerite Caldwell (Steinman maiden). I am named after the Ada you refer to. Ada Alviso is her married name. I have her drivers liscence, bible, and a baby quilt she made me. She helped to care for the Chinn boys and my grandpa Steinman. I don't think she is of any blood relation. I can get info on her too if you like. As for Linda, the only info I can obtain on her is of her death in Amador County, CA. My grandfather doesn't even know anything about her!!! I am trying to research for him so he can know more about where his mother came from. He is getting up there in the years, but is in good health.

I met Mary Evans Stowers when I was a little girl. Do you know Mary Evans mother's maiden name? Also, do you know anything about a 'shoot out' [supposedly over a girlfriend] at the Evans ranch [somewhere between Ione,Plymouth and west of Sutter Creek, CA ?] it is mentioned in Frank Latta's book about the Dalton Gang, written with assistance from Littleton Dalton. My great grandmother and Mary Stowers were close. I also knew Lester Stowers.

Hello Judy, I need to correct info for your family history. I am a descendant of Louis Meiss Sr. and I am doing extensive research to write a book on Louis and his family, parents, siblings, and children. There are four Minnie Meiss' that I have found. First, the daughter of Louis' brother Augustus Meiss, Mignon A. "Minnie" Meiss Sked. The second is Minnie E. Meiss who was the daughter of Edward P. H. Meiss, the son of Henry D. Meiss, another of Louis' brothers. Minnie E. Meiss' mother, Mary Belle Cummings died at the time of Minnie's birth and Minnie then went to live with her mother's parents, the Cummings. The third is your ancestor Minnie Margaret PANNING Meiss b. 16 Apr 1885 d. 15 Dec 1965 her parents were Henry PANNING and Maud ROPER. Minnie and John Daniel Meiss are buried together at the East Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento. The last is my ancestor Minnie Mugford Meiss. Minnie Mugford married Louis' son Henry Fredrick Meiss. Minnie Mugford Meiss is buried in Reno, Nevada where Henry and his brother Louis Jr. were in business together in the Meiss Bros. Meat Market. I have been dying to connect with anyone in Christian's line. Please contact me as I am sure your information will help a great deal with the book on Louis Meiss Sr. I hope this helps clear up all the Minnie Meiss' in the family. You can contact me at bc1956@sbcglobal.net
Your cousin, Terry

Majseventh wrote:
"My husband is the son of Marguerite Devore who was the daughter of Mervyn Devore and niece of his twin sister Marguerite Devore that is listed on the photo list as well. The family was from Ione I believe."

Hi majseventh:
My brother-in-law who grew up in Plymouth remembers a Charlie and Annie Devore that had a gas station on Hwy 16 (Plymouth to Sacramento). It was about eight miles west of Plymouth - further west than Waits Station which is on google maps but not as far west as the Ione Rd that intersects Hwy 16. They also lived in the station building. It is no longer a gas station but there is still a residence there. He remarked that a daughter or granddaughter of the DeVores has built a home on the hill
across the road from the former station. This would be
considered Plymouth area - not Ione. It is probably same distance to Ione as to Plymouth, though. On the 1930 census there is:

1930 census of township 5 of Plymouth which is the Willow Springs area west of town:

Charles G Devore Head 65 Owns
Annie L Devore Wife 55
Elmer Devore Son ab 20
Edward P Mummert Lodger & employee 28

Charles Devore had a radio set, lived on a farm, 36 age when married, could read & write, b in CA, father b OH, mother b IL, was farm laborer on a stock farm. Note that his son had 'ab' inserted after his name so may have meant that he was absent at college. The son has attended school or college in the last year.

Annie was b in CA, father b in Irish Free State, mother b in NY.

There was a Hotel Devore in Plymouth which burned down in
the early 1930s. I walked to Plymouth Grammar school (1939 - 1947) every day through the front porch of the hotel since it covered the sidewalk - the only part that was still standing. It abutted the existing city park. It has since been torn down completely. I am attaching a photo of the hotel.

Regards,
Nan Wolf

An unsigned person asked:
"Can anyone tell me where Wiley's Station was located?"

Here are the entries concerning Wiley's Station in the 1927
History of Amador County pub. by the Amador County Women's Clubs.

Nan
===========================
pg. 101 of 1927 History of Amador County

"---------------o---------------
William Wiley came to Pine Grove in ’49. Wiley’s
station, now Cook’s on the Alpine Highway, was
founded by him.
---------------o---------------

pg. 13 (This page takes one on a 1927 drive from Ione to Kirkwood - devoted to Resorts but worth a read - and does mention Wiley's Station)

RESORTS
One can get to Silver Lake, Plasse's and
Kirkwood's in a few hours now, over the State
Highway. Starting from Ione, one takes either the
Ridge Road, at the Summit House, or coming to the
county seat, the Alpine State Highway secured to
Amador County through the efforts of Anthony
Caminetti, when in the Senate, and for which citizens
of Jackson raised a fund of $10,000, which the state
duplicated, and proceeded with work that had been
delayed. The Alpine Highway Club was formed and
the money raised through and by them. The scenery
is beautiful, whichever route is taken. Many 'pioneer
names will be found on the mail boxes -enroute, each
with a history of its own. Alpine Hall is two miles
from Jackson. where balls are given several times
during the season. Frank Hewitt is the owner of this
place.
Pine Grove is as the old picture in the Amador,
History shows it. The hotel is now run by L. Galli.
A score of people have summer homes here, for the
climate is delightful. At Pioneer the Kimballs have a
refreshment place and dancing pavilion, and four
miles further is the old pioneer Butterfield home,
now owned by John Barton, his son-in-law. Here the
P. G. & E. have their supply camp. It has a beautiful
grove of giant pines across the road, which is used as
a camp ground by tourists. In this section the
famous apple orchards of Barton and Whitmore are
located, and Whitmore’s sawmill is above. Stephen
Werley's home is here. Mr. Werley comes of pioneer
stock and married Ada Greenhalgh, daughter of
Thomas Greenhalgh, Jackson pioneer. Then comes
the "Dew Drop Inn", a cool and cozy resort. Cook's
(formerly Wiley's Station) is next, and then Hams.
The old Farr and Lesley sawmills kept these places
lively before tourists arrived.
The scenery becomes magnificent. as one goes
higher. Corral Flat, Allen's stone house, the forest
rangers and The Maiden's Grave, Tragedy Springs,
the latter two marked by the Native Sons, bring us to
the road that leads to Plasse's and Stockton's
Municipal Camp.
Maurice Plasse and brother carry on the business
founded by Raymond Plasse, pioneer father, -an to
stay a month at Plasse's speaks for joy and health
and plenty.
The Municipal Camp is a beautiful spot, its main
assembly room built of logs with a fireplace the
width of the room. Beautiful Silver Lake is two
miles farther. In the '80's and '90's Peter Fagan
dispensed hospitality here, having a large hotel, and
also accommodations for animals. Later it became
the property of A. Caminetti, and after his death it
was sold to Ed Kay who has a resort there, also a
store arid. supply station for the numerous campers
that throng the borders of the lake. On the opposite
side of Silver Lake Captain Smith is erecting
cottages, with shower baths, hot and cold water, and
every convenience for tourist travel. Trout fishing is
the main diversion, or mountain climbing and horseback riding over the old
Emigrant, or Kit Carson trail. Lawrence Burke has a
beautiful summer home and cattle range a mile above
Silver Lake at Thunder Mountain. Mrs. Nell
Ginocchio, W. C. Downs have summer homes close
to the Lake.
Before reaching Kirkwood's, the oldest resort on
the old "Amador Wagon Road", now the Alpine
Highway, one goes around the famous Spur, but not
without pausing, for the scenery here cannot be
surpassed, the American River .Falls breaking the
splendor of the vista. Just before reaching Zack
Kirkwood's old time resort, one comes on Meadow
View, the summer home of Walter Taylor, who
married the only daughter of the Kirkwood's. The
main log house stands as sturdily as it did sixty three
years ago, when it was built. Joe Mason built it, and
his young wife (Jane Rawl Mason,) cooked for the
carpenters. In early days, every enterprise a man
engaged in was ably seconded by his spouse, and
nearly every pioneer woman did more than her share
to win the success achieved by her "men folks".
When county lines were drawn at the time Alpine
County was formed, the milk house and barn were
found in Alpine; across the creek is Amador, while
the Alpine, El Dorado line goes directly through the
big bar room in the log house. Zack could enliven a
weary hour explaining how he would “fool” the tax
collector, driving his herds across the line.
Year after year the same families "trekked" to the
mountains--the Marchants’, Downs', Meehan’s,
Brinn's, Vela's, and scores of others. Something that
is always there calls one back, but the old place is no longer "open house". Zack Kirkwood is dead--and
so is "Cap" Cooledge, Geo. Allen, Brinn and the rest
of them. Jack Barton tells a good one, apropos of a
group of "the boys" coming in unexpectedly to "fish"
for a week. They enjoyed everything-the eats,
drinks, games, fishing, all, to the full. When time
came for them to leave, Zack delivered himself:
"Well, boys, we got by better than I expected. I had
only a gallon of Kentucky Best when you came in
unexpectedly, but with the help of a bottle of Jamaica
ginger and the creek there, we've all pulled through."
Mrs. Kirkwood lived on the ranch south of town.
up to a short time ago when she bought the property
that had been owned by many well known families--
the Andrews', the Fabian’s, Bright's, Harrington's,
and finally, Kirkwood's. Elva Kirkwood Taylor lives
on the opposite corner. Walter Kirkwood has charge
of the ranch and cattle, and mother and son go to the
mountains every summer; but there are no grandsons
to carry on the name. George Kirkwood married
Margaret Holtz and had one daughter, now married
to John Digitali, son of the dairyman of that name.
The Taylor's have a son, Warren, a student at
Stanford.
Mrs. Kirkwood can tell many thrilling tales of
narrow escapes in snowstorms on the way out with
cattle and horses. One fall they were snowbound in
a cabin at Corral Flat; the horses were turned adrift,
and the party finally made its way out of the storm
after incredible hardships."

I found a partial listing online; I am quite cetain this is my Annie Lucinda Baker Jones Stewart and William W. Stewart. Annie was born Mar 6, 1847 in MI, William W Stewart was born in MN in 1843. I last found them on the 1920 CA Census. Below are ny notes.

In her sister Lydia's obituary, survivors are listed as "two sisters, Mrs. D. Herring of Pleasant Grove [Mary L. Baker], and Mrs. Anna Stewart of Pine City, California." "Anna" is probably Lucinda Ann, as Lydia had no other sisters other than these two.

1900 Census, CA, Amador, Twp 3, Dist 5., William W.
Did you find the records you were looking for? I am looking for your grandmothers sister "Henrietta"? HORTON, (I believe but not sure) supposedly had a large amount of family history in her possession. I do not believe she ever married so I am not sure whatever happened to it. She must have died before 1901 as she is not mentioned in her mothers obit.

Dan, as he was known, was named after Elizabeth Schneider's father and lived in Sacramento. He was born 5 June 1870 and died 14 April 1973. Minnie was born 16 April 1885 and died 15 Dec 1965. Her mother's maiden name was Roper. Dan was a great uncle to my husband.
Best wishes, Judy
