I have one Gartlin to report. This comes from the Great Register of Amador County, Cal. 1892 (voter registration records). In it appears:
John Edward Gartlin, age 28, height: 5'1/4"; complexion: light; eyes: blue; hair: light; no visible marks/scars; occupation: stock raiser; born in California; Precinct: North Ione; Registered: 8/13/1892.
The Amador Archives in Jackson, CA, has a vast collection of records, photos, etc., which they index and place into a searchable database on-line. I ran the Gartlin name at their site and several items came up. To run the search, go to:

Click the Search the Amador Co. Archives On-line index and when that opens, click search at the bottom of the page; then enter GARTLIN in the keyword search box (leaving the other options as they are), then click view the records. Each indexed item containing GARTLIN will come up, however, other records will also appear. You will notice that to the left there are reference numbers, if you want any of the items copied and sent to you (the cost is reasonable), copy those numbers down -- in the text, each specific group gets a file number and each individual item in a group has its own number. It gets a bit tricky but I am sure the Archives will help you figure it out.
It appears they may have at least one photo of a Gartlin woman and possibly some interesting correspondence.
