I would very much like to get in touch with any descendants.

History of Alameda, Woodstock District, Jack London

While many locals associate Woodstock with the Alameda Housing Authority’s 1941 housing project, the area has a much deeper and richer history that stretches back another 90 years.

In 1851 or early 1852 Charles Bowman received a deed from William Worthington Chipman and Gideon Aughinbaugh for land here. And the Town of Woodstock was the 1864 creation of A.A. Cohen and his partner J. D. Farwell.

By the time we’re finished we will have met 6-year-old Jack London, learned about the terra cotta, borax and oil industries and stood on the old bay shore about where A.A. Cohen’s San Francisco & Alameda Rail Road wharf once stood. We’ll also meet an early California governor and see a fine example of a Gothic Revival farmhouse.

Let’s get started.

We’ll get underway at Lincoln Avenue and Linden Street. Longfellow Education Center stands on one side of Lincoln here and Longfellow Park on the other. First the San Francisco & Alameda Railroad, and then Central Pacific Railroad trains ran on tracks down Lincoln here.

Longfellow Park was once home to the Kohlmoos Hotel. It’s hard to imagine a building the size of the Kohlmoos nestled in a park the size of Longfellow, but such a building stood here until 1934. In his book about Alameda parks, Alameda At Play, historian Woody Minor says that “the four-story structure (included) self-contained systems for water and gas.”

The parcel the hotel stood on was bigger than today’s park, as Haight Avenue did not appear on maps until 1896. Minor describes the hotel’s landscaped grounds as “covering about an acre” and “laid out with paths, fountains and a pavilion for billiards and bowling.” Longfellow School just across the street replaced West End Primary School, where 6-year-old Jack London attended classes.

Walk west on Lincoln to Marshall Way and down Marshall Way to Pacific Avenue. Marshall Way was built on the San Francisco and Alameda Railroad’s right-of-way. A. A. Cohen laid tracks across Alameda on today’s Lincoln Avenue in 1864. Lincoln was called Railroad Avenue until 1909, when it was renamed to honor Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday. Cohen’s SF&A station and wharf stood at the foot of Pacific Avenue, however. Cohen had to build his tracks in a northwesterly direction somewhere along the line so his trains reached Pacific Avenue and the rail yards. Cohen chose the spot where Marshall Way now runs to build the curve that accomplished this.

Cohen was by no means the first to develop this area. Sometime in late 1851 or early 1852, Charles Bowman purchased 144 acres here from Chipman and Aughinbaugh. Instead of a fence, Bowman chose to build a ditch to define his eastern property boundary. Quickly dubbed “Bowman’s Ditch,” it ran in a north-south direction from the marshlands to San Francisco Bay. The ditch crossed this area about where Marshall Way and Pacific Avenue intersect.

Chipman Middle School — named for one of Alameda’s founders —stands on the site were Nehemiah Clark built his terra cotta factory. Before Clark arrived, this piece of land belonged to Thomas Davenport. We’ll learn more about him when we reach Woodstock Park. When Davenport died his heirs, sold the portion of his property to Clark.

On his fascinating Web site about California brick-making (http://calbricks.netfirms.com), Dan Mosier tells us that Delaware native Nehemiah Clark arrived in California in 1850. In 1864, he established Pacific Pottery on the east side of Sacramento where he made various clay products. These included vitrified sewer pipe, chimney pipe and his best-seller, the “Pacific” fire brick.

Mosier says that Nehemiah opened an office and depot on Market Street in San Francisco in 1880, where he sold fire brick and other clay products. In 1883, he moved his office to California Street. When he decided to move his pottery plant from Sacramento to be closer to the bustling San Francisco market, he selected a site in Alameda for his new works. He built his new plant — an enormous four-story building with more than 600,000 of his own bricks — at 401 Pacific Ave. Merlin writes that the Clark factory contained four kilns and, at 28,500 square feet, was the largest building in Alameda. The building stood until 1963.

Woodstock Park lies behind Chipman Middle School. To get there, walk down Pacific to Third Street; go right on Third and right on Spruce Street to the gate at the end of the street. Go through the gate and into the park. Like the site where Chipman Middle School stands, this land belonged to Thomas Davenport. In fact, Third Street was called Davenport Street on some early maps. Davenport lived on the Woodstock Park site in one of the two mansions in the area. (Governor Henry H. Haight lived in the other. We’ll meet Haight and his family near the end of our walk.)

The 1880 census lists Thomas living here with his wife, Caroline, his brother Matthew and his cousin James. Minor writes that Davenport made his living as a fur trader in Missouri and a wholesaler in Mexico. He arrived in California during the Gold Rush. Davenport owned 15 acres here and “built his house on the west half of his property, leasing out the remaining land for cultivation,” Minor writes.

Farmer John London, his wife, Flora; daughters Eliza and Ida and 4-year-old son, Jack, appear as the very next household on the same page of the 1880 federal census as Thomas Davenport. According to Russ Kingman in A Pictorial Life of Jack London, Jack London was born on Jan. 12, 1876 to Flora Wellman at 615 Third St. in San Francisco. Jack’s father, astrologist William Chaney, denied paternity and left town. About nine months later on Sept. 7, Flora married partially disabled Civil War veteran John London. The following year, John removed Eliza and Ida — daughters from a previous marriage — from the Protestant Orphan Asylum on Haight Street in San Francisco.

Sometime in 1878 a diphtheria epidemic swept through San Francisco. Jack and his stepsister Eliza both suffered near-fatal attacks of the disease. Kingman says that the London family moved from San Francisco to Oakland to escape the epidemic; by 1879 John London was operating a truck garden on a parcel of land in Oakland near the present-day Emeryville border.

Then in 1880, when young John Jr. (“Johnny” to his family) was 4 years old, John Sr. and Flora moved to Alameda with the children. According to Kingman, London’s parents cultivated 20 acres of land near Thomas Davenport’s mansion. In 1882, 6-year-old Johnny started grade school at West End Primary School (on the site of today’s Longfellow Education Center). The family didn’t stay long. On Jan. 7, 1883, John took up roots and moved his family to the Tobin Ranch in San Mateo County where they raised horses and grew potatoes.

Next week we’ll continue our walk along Cypress Street through today’s Woodstock. We’ll learn more about this 1941 housing development, see where the South Pacific Coast Rail Road ran its trains and learn about Bird’s Hotel. We’ll also set foot on the 19th century shoreline and learn about the borax and oil refineries there. We’ll wrap up our hike with a walk down old West End Avenue (today’s Fourth Street) past where Gov. Henry H. Haight lived with his family and get a first-hand look at Abram and Caroline Rich’s Gothic Revival house.

This hike is from Dennis Evanosky’s new book Alameda’s Architectural Treasure Chest due out later this summer.

From at least 1944, and I'm quite sure years earlier, my mother was the owner of a beauty salon located in the 2200 block of Dwight Way. I don't know the name of the shop, but my mother's name was Daisy May FERGUSON. Am hoping to find old advertisements or anything related to her and the shop, other than census records, which I have. Any info will be appreciated. THANKS! - Trish

Convents in Oakland around 1920's

I am looking for information on Catholic Convents that existed in or around Oakland, California around the 1920's. This convent would have allowed children to live there while their parents were off working elsewhere. I am in search information on my husbands g-mother and her family. She was born in California, 10/1916, her name was Lorraine Slocum. She passed away in San Francisco in the 1980's. Lorraine's last name at the time of her passing was Bianchi. She had been married to a George Binachi (2nd marriage) and they lived in Daly City California. Her mother was of hispanic heritage and we believe that Lorraine's mother's last name was Garcia. Lorraine and her sisters went to live in a convent in this area due to their mothers illness. Lorraine worked as a nurses aid in a hospital in Oakland where she soon met and married (at the age of 15-16) a George Murphy (1st husband) believed to work in the Pharmacy in the same hospital. We have been told that Lorraine's mother's family were the owners of many, many buildings in and around Oakland. I know this is a lot of information but we have hit a lot of walls and if anyone can help, we would welcome your help.
Thank you and God Bless

My gg-uncle, James Riley Blair (1876-1947) lived in Oakland between 1924 and 1944. He moved to Merced county sometime in the 1940s and died there in 1947.

The 1930 census and voter registration rolls have his wife, Osa, listed. However, she is not mentioned in his obituary.

I suspect they divorced since she is not on the California death index.

Is there a divorce index for Alameda county? If I wrote the courthouse would they look it up?

Thanks!

- Heather

Death - PRATER, Alvin L. (1946-1974)

Handcuffed Slain Couple Identified

SUNOL - The young couple whose bodies were found on a lonely road here Sunday were identified today as newlyweds, Alvin and Mary Ellen Prater.

Their late model white Ford is missing and its discovery may provide a clue to the brutal killer who manacled their hands behind them before firing a single bullet to the head of each.

Prater, 29, and Mary Ellen, 20, were married in Santa Rosa, her home town, just three weeks before their death.

His mother, Mrs. Stella Prater, reached at her home in Hurricane, Utah, today said the pair might have given a ride to a hitchhiker.

"They were very helpful, they thought they should help everyone they could," she said.

Just before his marriage, Prater moved his silversmith equipment from Eureka, where he had been living, to an apartment in Santa Rosa and prepared to resume his trade there. His mother said she has no idea why the couple was in Sunol or who they might have met.

The couple owned a 1970 or '71 white Ford, which has not been found, she said.

Prater had served a hitch in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. He was born in southern Utah, but raised in Sacramento.

Mary Ellen's mother, Mrs. Frances Kanihan, gave a bridal shower for the pair in Santa Rosa just 10 days ago, Mrs. Prater recalled.

Alameda County Sheriff's investigators said the young people were slain "execution style."

There were bruises on their upper arms as if they had been struck or mauled before they were killed.

Their bodies, stripped of identification, were found by a motorcyclist near the blind end of old Vallecitos Road about a mile from its interseciton with Interstate 680.

Oakland Tribune | Oakland, California | Tuesday, August 27, 1974 | Page 1
=============================
Rites Tomorrow for Slain Couple

SUNOL - Mary Ellen Prater would have been 21 tomorrow, but instead of a birthday party there will be a joint funeral service for Mary Ellen and her bridegroom, Alvin Prater.

The newlyweds were murdered on a deserted country road here sometime during the weekend. Each had been handcuffed and shot once through the head.

Alameda County sheriff's investigators have virtually no leads to the slayer or slayers of the young pair.

It was only by chance that they were identified as soon as they were. Their killer had stripped them of all identification.

But Mary Ellen's mother, Mrs. George Kanihan of Santa Rosa, explained the circumstances.

"The couple was married very quickly - they'd only known each other six weeks - and we had a party for them a week ago Sunday to welcome Alvin to the family.

"At the party I gave Mary Ellen a little gift. It was a tiny birth announcement set in plastic. It measured, oh, about 1-1/2 by 2 or 3 inches. It just said 'Mr. and Mrs. George Kanihan, Aug. 29, 1953, a girl'.

"I'd carried it in my purse over 20 years. Well, she had that shoved way deep in her pocket and that's what the police found."

Authorities estimated they had been dead up to 48 hours before being found.

Each had been shot below the right ear with a 45-caliber gun, according to Deputy Coroner John Prindeville.

Prater, 27, was a self-employed silversmith who moved to Santa Rosa from Eureka at the time of their marriage three weeks ago. His family lives in Hurricane, Utah.

Mary Ellen was born and raised in Santa Rosa.

The funeral service will be conducted at Daniels Chapel of the Roses in Santa Rosa and their bodies sent to Utah for burial in his family plot.

Oakland Tribune | Oakland, California | Wednesday, August 28, 1974 | Page 7
=============================
CA Death Index:
PRATER ALVIN L 1946 10 21 MALE UT ALAMEDA 1974 08 23 27
I am looking for info on my great aunt of mine who died on 5 July 1945 in Alameda, California. Her name was Venus Margaret Damron (maiden name Wooley, though she was raised by a foster family so she may have had a different last name before Damron). I do not know her husband's name, just that he was a Damron. She was born 14 Mar 1919 in Ohio. She was given up before the 1930 census, but I don't know what family she was given to. I do know from the California Death Index that she died 5 July 1945 in Alameda, and it lists the correct father's surname and mother's maiden name. The family story is that she was killed in a motorcycle accident and that her husband may have died as well. I have been unable to locate any newspaper records on ancestry regarding this.

Thank you,
Jodi Roessler

George and Elizabeth Bird, early Alameda history

http://www.alamedasun.com/index.php?option=com_content&t...

By 1860, George Bird and his wife, Elizabeth, were living on Bowman’s Point. The federal census taker that year spelled the family’s name “Byrd” and listed George’s occupation as a butcher. George was born in Woodstock, England, and Elizabeth hailed from Ireland. The couple had two children, 2-year-old John and 10-month old Robert Henry. Seventeen-year-old Patrick Murphy from Ireland also lived with the family.

The 1870 federal census tells us that George and Elizabeth Bird (this time the census taker got the family’s name right) were operating a hotel. The Birds had added four more children to the brood since 1860: Mary, Lizzie, George and Jennie. Merlin says that George’s brother, Urban, had a dairy farm nearby.

I am looking for anyone with information on or a connection to the family of William L. Battersby and his wife Margaret O'Donoghue.

In the 1930 census the family was living in Almeda, William was age 44 (born in California), Margaret was age 42 (born in Canada, moved to USA in 1906??). They had 3 children listed,

Margaret F Battersby age 15
Mark W Battersby age 14
Thelma Battersby age 12

In 1922 the family was living in Paris Street in Alameda.

I believe Mark was possibly born Jan. 3, 1916 and died Dec. 9, 1986.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Kathleen

this is a regular section in the Alameda Sun, called the Essence of Alameda, this is just part of this weeks, follow the link on the bottom to continue reading.

Let's continue our walk through "Hibbard's Third." We began last week at today's Chestnut Street and Eagle Avenue. (1). Had we set the clock back to the 1854 or so, we would have been at the intersection of Minnow and Eagle streets in the Town of Encinal.

In 1874, Columbus Bartlett paved Chestnut Street making it one of the first paved streets on the peninsula. Bartlett also laid out sidewalks along each side of the improved street.

Last week we learned that A. A. Cohen's San Francisco and Alameda Railroad ran on tracks along Linnet Street in 1864. (The street's name was later appropriately changed first to Railroad Avenue, then to Lincoln Avenue.)

http://www.alamedasun.com/index.php?option=com_content&t...

My parents:Irving Edward Hardin & Harriet Ann (Albright) Hardin, lived in Alameda. My Dad was born in that town in April 1902. My Mother came to Alameda when she was about 10 years old. My parents were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in 1920. They bought their first home and lived on Grace Court. Theirs friends were Ann & George Fox and Evelyn and Dell Cardinet. Dell sold appliances from his home. Evelyn became a real estate agent. I believe Dell's Dad owned the Cardinet Candy Company in Alameda. I used to listen to my parents talk about the "good old days", growing up during the Great Depression. How Mom and Evelyn used to collect their milk bottles and turn them in for cash at the dairy.
I know Cardinet is a french name: pronounced like it's Cardinay. I could not find any messages regarding this family on the alameda board. Everything has changed since last year on the message boards. I like the old system better. I did not get lost and switched to something totally different of what I wanted.
The Cardinet's must have had children who lived in town? Surely someone of that family is doing genealogy and looking for where Mom and Dad grew up?

Trying to determine if information I obtained from California death index is correct and was told to try and get obituary for confirmation. Is there somebody who could look up a Margaret E. Dunn who died on November 20, 1912? I am not sure if this is my Margaret E. Dunn and would hopefully be able to tell by obituary.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have been having a terrible time getting information on this ancestor.

HOCKING, William d. Jan 1967 per SSDI in Berkeley - obit request

Can anyone help me locate an obituary and/or a death certificate for William Thomas HOCKING? According to the California Death Records index, William died 22-Aug-1959 in San Francisco Co. The data shown in the index correspond to what I would expect for William - born in Michigan, mother's maiden name of KREAL (actually KRELL, I believe).

This GG Uncle of mine has always eluded me, so I am hoping that the death cert and/or obit can confirm that this is the correct William HOCKING.

Regards,
Carl

I am looking for information about the family of Andrew and Inga Hansen who lived at 2422 Mary St. in Berkley. Edvard Skraastad gave this address at Ellis Island upon his arrival on Sept. 12, 1902 (to my uncle- Mr. Andrew Hansen). Andrew and Inga are listed in the 1900 census along with four children-George, Arthur, Edith, and Louis. In the 1880 census there are also an Edward and an Ida. One of the six children died before 1900. Andrew (Andreas) arrived in the USA on August 22, 1849. On December 12, 1867 he (using the name Andrew) arrived in NYC with his wife Inga. Their ages are listed as 41 and 19. His occupation is listed as miner. On the 1880 census his occupation is listed as watchman for a railroad company.
My great uncle , Edward Stad (Edvard Skraastad), also worked for the railraod. He was married to Lily but later was divorced. I have a family group picture which includes him and signed from Aunt Inga. It was sent to my grandmother-Edward's sister. I have not yet found out Inga's connection to my family. She may be my great grandmother's or great grandfather's older sister. I have not yet found her in the Norwegian census or church records. My second cousin in Kristiansand, Norway is also looking for her.

I've hit a brick wall in my genealogy research of the Joseph PERRY family. They lived on Potter St. in Oakland at least until the mid 1940's, possibly longer. In the 1920's he worked at Mare Island. Later he was a Locksmith and Gunsmith. Joseph V. Perry, b. 1882-1884 in the Azores, immigtated to Massachusetts. He moved to the Greater San Francisco area about 1918. His wife's name was Emily, b. 1896 and d. 1989. They had at least 2 children, Patricia b. 16 Apr 1919, and Marie b. 23 May 1921. I cannot find the names of Joe's siblings or other relatives in CA. I am in Massachusetts and, needless to say, cannot do any paper searches in CA. lol ANY INFO will be most appreciated.

Ginger

I'm looking for the descendants of Nathan Macon Chadwick civil war veteran from Craven Co. North Carolina who relocated to Ca. after the war. He was born about 1841 in Craven Co., NC. to John Chadwick and Mary Wade. We moved to Ca. after the war an married Mary Toomy(Sp?) who was either from Ireland or Nevada (I've found conflicting data on this)
I can locate him as late as 1910 from voter registration indexes and census in San Francisco, but it appears his descendants went to Alameda. I live in NC and any help finding Ca info would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
I just got an obit on my daughter-in-law's ggg-grandmother who died in 1936. It says the funeral services took place at Berg Funeral chapel at 1936 University Ave. Berkeley. I don't find it still exists. Would anyone know if the records from Berg could have been saved and would be at another funeral home?
Also, it doesn't have a cemetery, but I would think it would be somewhere close there in Berkeley. Anyone have a suggestion as to where she could have been buried?
Thanks!

Hello all, Just wanted to point out my site, on which I am working hard putting up various resources from Oakland newspapers. I have a number of transcriptions up, including almost 450 names for an 1890 census substitute, and a transcription of the old Webster street cemetery from 1874:

http://rainydayresearch.com/transcriptions/oaktrib/oaktrib_t...

These transcriptions are freely accessible, and would probably prove of interest to anyone researching Oakland in the 1870-1890's.

I also have been working on indexing early Oakland Tribune publication years; the indices are fully accessible, however I am selling article info/copies.

For the latter, I have completed the years 1874-1876, and just posted almost 6,000 names from the 1890 publication year:

http://rainydayresearch.com/indices/oaktrib/OakTribIndex.htm...
