I am a little confused. I am trying to determine exactly where my ancestor lived in Yell County. The 1860 census says it was Ward Township and the post office was Petit Jean. I find no town name Ward except over near Conway. Where exactly would this have been?
Also is there someone out there in Yell County that can help me locate the history of the land my ancetor had in Yell? I have the BLM description. I would like to know what happened to it after he died.
Mary Jones

Thomas Henry MCVAY death notice.

I am in need of help. I have tried the normal local channels of finding the death certificate for Thomas Henry McVay, my great grandfather. We went to Vital Statistics in Little Rock to no avail.

He is said to have died in December of 1918 in Neely. He is interred at the Ringer Cemetery.

We know the location of his death and the burial but not the exact date or cause.

The name was sometimes spelled McVeigh or McVey. But MCVAY is how he spelled it when he wrote it himself.

He registered for the WW1 Draft in Sept., remarried in October and died in December all of that year.

Neely is located close to Liberty Hall. In Yell county Arkansas.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks!

WEAVER, Robert L. in Bluffton, Yell Co., AR

I am looking for some kind soul to assist me with finding the death and / or burial of Robert L. WEAVER. I was in e-mail contact with his granddaughter until she passed away a few years back. She told me that Robert died in Arkansas in 1913. Unfortunately, her notes to me did not specify an exact date or place. But, Robert can be found on the 1910 Census residing with his son Albert and family in Bluffton, Yell Co., AR. So, I would speculate this is where he died. Unfortunately for me, the online AR death index begins with 1914. Can anyone assist me with confirming Robert's date and place of death? Or where he might be buried?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

I would like to see if anyone could look up four graves for me. They would be around Danville. It is for 4 boys, they deid in 1922 or 1923 I believe. I was a boy by the name of Elmer Love , Lee Love and a set of twins that I don't the name of. My grandfather was only about 5 when his brothers died. His father had doctored the milk cow for bugs and stuff when the cow got a scratch on the udder and the poison when into the milk and these boys died from it. Also if anyone could look up and see if they could find a Spencer family in the 1900 or 1910 census that list at lest Lula, Beula, and Riley Spencer as the Children of the the household I would be grateful. I I know about their father is that he was an Indian that took the Spencer name from a Bricklayer he worked for. His Indain name was light blue water or sky blue water. I have been looking for awhile for this info. Thank you so much for any help you can give.

Need Information on Thomas Jefferson Wallace b. mid 1800's

Looking for information on Thomas Jefferson Wallace born around mid 1800's. Would have lived in Yell county. He married Emmerline Light (whose mother was Martha Cobb married to George Cobb before George W. Towns Light). Thomas stated he originally came from Carolina (not sure if north or south; where he was wanted for murder) and original name was Shaves / Shaefer / Shaeffer -- daughter unsure of exact name or spelling. Possible ties to James and Dalton brothers.

I am seeking any information on the family of Squire "Ky" Marcrum and his wife Elizabeth Jane Bennett. They had the following children: Nancy (she is my husband's great grandmother), Thomas, Margaret, Martha, Joseph, Violet, William and Minerva. Squire died in 1925 and is buried in the Aly, Yell County Cemetery. I really don't know much else about this family and would be very interested in finding other "Members."

William Jefferson Bullock (1810-ca1883) Forefathers and Descendants

I have researched Wm. Jefferson Bullock and most of his 11 children and their descendants in Pope and Yell Counties AR. I have also researched the roots of his parents, Amos and Rachel Thompkins Bullock, and his grandparents, William and Franky Bullock, in TN and back into Virginia.

My research indicates that Amos Bullock's forefathers are probably related to my Bullock family that immigrated into colonial Virginia in the 1660’s. I wish to collaborate & share info with other researchers or persons of kindred blood to these families -- especially any living male Bullocks of this family. Please contact me @ charlesbullock42@gmail.com

Thanks for your time to read this posting. Sincerely, Charles W. He died in 1920 in Yell, Arkansas. I have been told that if I order his death certificate it will tell me who his parents are, can anyone tell me if his parents names will really be on his death certificate? If so, can you tell me exactly where to contact for his death certificate in Arkansas. Is there a place online that is in Arkansas that would have it? Thanks so much for any info
Darlene

Can anyone direct me to a source of information (birth, marriage, death)of my ggf JAMES STEWARD(T),(b.?Mi ssissippi, d ??. )married (date and location unknown) a JULIA ANN (SETH) PARKER, (b.1837 Sevier County, Ark., d. 5 Jan., 1906)......they had three children all born in Danville:
GEORGE W. "Fleet" STEWARD (b. 29 Feb. 1864, d. 24 Aug., 1918,
PRINCE ALBERT STEWARD (my gf), b.7 Apr., 1872, d. 17 Jul., 1948
JULIA BIDCAR STEWARD, b. 17 Sep., 1874, d. 18 Apr., 1947

The only record I have of them, in Arkansas, is the 1880 Census of Arkansas, Yell County, Spring Creek Township, sheet 382, page 29 which indicates JULIA ANN (wife and mother) is a widow, and lists her deceased husband (my JAMES) as being born in Mississippi.

Why cannot I find ANYTHING that confirms the birth of the three children above? (I got my information from their death certificates, in Idaho). I have checked over 150 cemetery sites for James death and burial in Yell County (probably between 1874 and 1880) or his marriage to JULIA ANN...again guessing between 1862 and 1864 - location I can only guess,....Sevier County??, better yet ...Yell County??. Right after the Civil War,.... cannot find any specific confirming record of him in the War. Have checked the Mexican War...nothing. Have not checked the church records of Yell County......anyone have a list and is it available on the Internet? Thanks for reading all this...hope to hear from you?

I researching the soldiers of the 6th Tennessee Cavalry Co C, and George Washington Sturdivant was a Private in this Company. He moved to and died in Yell Co. AR, according to his pension records. Records indicate that he died in the home of his daughter, Sarah M. (Maggie) Haney, in the year 1922. Does anyone know where this soldier is buried, and if he has a tombstone? I'd like to have a digital picture of the headstone if there is one.

Thanks,
Mike

My grandfather, Freeman Taylor Almon, formerly of Carroll County, Georgia, married Nellie Barnett about 1913 in Yell County, Arkansas.

Nellie was born to John W. Barnett and Alice Martin, born Aug 1868, however, in the 1900 Census for Yell County, Alice is Mary A. which I believe to be Mary Alice.

John W. Barnett and Alice Martin were married 6 Jan 1881 in Yell County. In the 1880 Census for Yell County, I found John W. Barnett, a widower, age 32, with 3 children, Mary, age 5 years, Ada, age 3 years, and Catherine, age 5 months, Cintha, his mother, age 57, James, his brother, age 31, and Sarah, his sister, age 37.. On the same page for (1880 U.S. Federal Census > Arkansas > Yell > Ward and Lower Lafave > District 222) I also found Cintha Martin, a widow, age 49, and Mary, age 11.

In the 1900 Census for Yell County, I found John Barnett, age 55 marrried to Mary A., age 31, and their children, James, age 17, Edward, age 15, Maggie, age 13, Dora, age 11, Nellie, age 9, Maud, age 7, Hattie, age 5, and Ruby, age 2.

In the 1910 Census for Yell County, I found John W. Barnett, age 62 years old and a widower again, James A, his son, age 27, Edward, age 24, Nellie, age 17, and Roy, age 8.

If anyone has information or family history on the above mentioned people, please feel free to e-mail me at allmantr@cs.com.

I am trying to search the 1870 census data in Yell, ARkansas. I know that in 1880 my family was in Gravelly Arkansas (Yell, Arkansas) and they remained there until their death. Says he enlisted in Confederate army in July 1962 and was AWOL in October 1862. Jane was born in 1864 but in 1866 Mary married Will Cody from Perry County because they had a child. I think Isaac came from Tennessee but don't know anything about his family or what happened to him around 1865 or where he is buried.

I am looking for any information on either of them.

On the 1850 Washington Co, AR census, Anna Robbins is living alone with Uriah Coots/Koots and his family, I think Uriah was her brother. Anna was with child and later gave birth to a daughter, Susannah Robbins, so I am assuming that John Robbins has died. There were other Robbins living nearby. I can't find any info on John Wire Robbins and would appreciate any info anyone has on him or his family.

Anna remarried to Stephen Newberry in 1853 and had several children. Her daughter, Susannah, Married John Russell in Greene Co, MO. Susannah and John Russell were my GGgrandparents and Anna and John Robbins were my GGGgrandparents.

It is www.yellcountyobits.org

My cousins, Robert and Patsy Gatliff and I have been working on transcribing and indexing obituaries from the "Yell County Record" Newspaper, a weekly newspaper published in Danville, Arkansas. The Arkansas History Commission has, in past years, microfilmed this publication and made it available to the state and county libraries for their research departments. However, to my knowledge, this publication has not been archived since the mid 1990's.

We have completed years 1997 - 2006 and they are available on site, by year, in PDF format. They can be opened and searched on line or you may save the file to your hard drive, where you can search at your leisure. When the file opens, you will notice the bookmark pane to the left, listing each name alphabetically. If you see a name of interest, click on the name and up pops the obituary transcription for that person. You can also do a general search on a surname of interest. Sometimes you can discover previously unknown family members by using this type of search.

A complete, separate, searchable, Master Index file for years 1997-2006, was created by Robert and is also available for opening on site or for download.

Also recently added are the first few months of 2007. These names will not be added to the Master Index until we have the year 2007 complete.

Robert and I have also extracted and transcribed obits and death notices that were originally published in the Yell County Record Newspaper in years 1954 and 1955. Those transcriptions, by year, are now available for opening and searching online, or for download to your hard drive.

Patsy owns a personal collection of old clippings, plus a collection inherited from her Aunt Jessie, and she has graciously allowed us to transcribe and create searchable PDF files of her collections, to be used for the benefit of the Yell County Research community. They are also on the site.

This is an ongoing project and we will be adding additional years as they are processed. Once we have several years of the older obits transcribed, Robert will make available a Master Index, like the one he maintains for the more recent obituaries.

You will need to have the Adobe PDF "free" Reader software, version 7 or later, installed on your computer, in order to open and view these files. If you need this software, there is a link on the web site.

For those of you who might be curious, the cemetery image that is used on the Home Page was created from a photo taken at Brearley Cemetery in Dardanelle, Arkansas. The residents of Yell County take great pride in seeing to the care and upkeep of the many small cemeteries that dot the county. If you have a family member buried at one of the cemeteries, be assured their final resting place is lovingly tended.

My sincere and heartfelt thanks to Robert for the outstanding job he's done with the web site and the obituary transcriptions.

We hope you find these files helpful to your research.

Mary Fowler Leek

I have been searching for my family ties for many years and my search is basically in Gravelly, Arkansas. I am thinking about making a website specific to Gravelly, Arkansas Genealogy and want to see if there are people interested in adding to it - right at the moment I have an existing website online for a RV club I belong to: fresnofloaters.com and on the left hand side of the webpage is a menu list with a link for Gravelly, Arkansas. Wanted to post this message and see if there is any interest in making this website and only have a email link right now to see if it is worth a try. If you have families from Gravelly, Arkansas please let me know if you are interested.
Thank you

Yes, I am looking for my greatgreatgrandparents that
came from Ky to the Yell County area in the late 1800's
they had one child that I know of in 1892 her name was
Mary Frances Moore.
I can't seem to fine these people anywhere on the internet
boards. I know they could have been in the Danville Havana
and Scottsville area there. But like I said I can't fine
them anywhere not even in Ky I know it is important to have
dates but I only have dates on Mary Frances and John A Moore
one of their son's and daughter. John was born in 1875 in
Ky he married in 1901 in Scottsville,Ark I have gotten a
copy of his marriage certificate from Russellville but
like I would like to fine out if maybe the Historical
Society might have some info on any Moore's in that
area. If you do please email me at ladybyrd937@msn.com
or thru this board.

Yes, I am wondering if the Historical Society would happen
to have a picture of the Kirkwood Sawmill that was taken
in 1904, I have a copy of one that was taken from newspaper
clipping that was made in 1975 but you can't see the people
in it. I would love to have a copy that I can see. The
only thing I can see is the name of three men in it and
one of those men is My greatgrandfather John Moore who
was a sawer and his brother in law Cleveland Nuttall and
the man that owned the place I believe it was a Mr Hoyt.
If anyone from the Historical Society can send me a copy
of this picture if they have it please email me at one
at ladybyrd937@msn.com I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you,
BettyParsleyByrd

Mt. Nebo - Rose School District #94

I'm looking for information about, and early photos of, the old one room school on Mt. Nebo. It may have served the Rose School District #94 which was in existence from 1891 to 1930 at which time the district was absorbed into the Dardanelle School District. One source indicates the city council of the Town of Mt. Nebo established a 3 month summer school on the mountain in the mid-1920's. This structure may have housed the school during that time. The property on which the structure rests was probably acquired around 1933 when development of Mt. Nebo State Park began. The structure later served as a store, park visitor center and employee residence. Any information would be appreciated.

I had family tree info that I thought was backed up but found out it was not, unfortunately. I had contact at one time with someone who found the cemetery my grandmother was buried in in Arkansas, Parks Cemetery at Nola near the Yell County line is all the info I have and I am unsure if this is the one my grandmother is burried in. My grandmother's name was Flora Gordon Walker and she was married to Vird Walker ~ I believe at some time I was told that other Walker family members were also buried there. Is there anyone that lives near this cemetery or knows of any online links for it. Would really appreciate any info.
Darlene

Julie/Julia Coker Hilliard

I am looking for any information on Julie/Julia Coker Hillard. She was married to Fate (this is a nickname I do believe) Hilliard. His first name may have actually been Layfayette (sp). Julie was born in or close to Birta, Yell County, Arkansas. They had 5 sons Waveland, Lafayette, J.E., H.E. and Veral and one daughter Theo (my grandmother). Julie wasd born abt. 1890 and in 1900 lived in Mason, Yell County, Arkansas acording to the 1900 census. Her father was Joseph Coker, mother Levticis. I was told by my grandmother that Julie was buried in Birta Cemetery and she had no headstone but was buried under a big tree (but which big tree right?) I have not been able to find a listing for a Julie/Julia Coker Hilliard in the listing for the Birta Cemetery. Any and all information anyone is willing and/or able to give or share with me will be ever so welcomed. You may e-mail me direct krickett13_2000@yahoo.com please put Coker/Hilliard in the subject line so it doesnt get thrown away by mistake.
Thank You for any information shared with me.

Sincerely
Tina Underwood

I am searching the 1870 census data sheets online and looking for my family. When I found them in 1880 and onward they were in Gravelly in Yell, Arkansas, can anyone tell me which of these townships would be closest to Gravelly Arkansas - I have already gone through Dardanelle, Lower La Fave, and Upper Lafave.
Ester E. Weaver

I'm searching for information on my grandmother. She was born about 1902. She was married to Alter (Alty) Thurman Weaver about 1918. Alter was a widow when he married her and at the time had one daughter Violet. Ester and Alter had a number of children including my father (Nolan/Nolen). I believe Ester's maiden name was Williams, but I can't be sure. I also have information she was born in Arkansas, but again, it's not validated and I can't find any marriage or death records. My father did tell me his mother died around the great depression along with a sister. The last report I can find of her is in the 1930 census which noted her as Alter's wife and they did have a small child that was unnamed (along with the other children). Any help would be much appreciated.

Four WOOD sisters, 1870, Dardanelle, Yell Co, AR from MO

1870 census transcript WOOD sisters found in Golly Rock Twp., Dardanelle post office, Yell county, Arkansas:
Caroline E. (Elizabeth Caroline) WOOD 25, born 1845 in KY
Nancy M. WOOD, 28, born 1842 KY
Martha WOOD, 24, born 1846 IL
Susan J. WOOD, 18; born 1852 IL
All single at this time. It appears they had RE and personal assets valued at $2,500 and $400 respectively.
Searching for any info on them; they are believed to be lateral ancestors in my WOOD and NICHOLS line, who may lead me to more info on my direct WOOD line. Their family migrated from KY, to IL, to MO and then these four sisters migrated to AR before the 1870 census perhaps because of the civil war. It's possible their parents and seven other siblings were civil war casualties as well as their uncle and five cousins all in Jasper Co, MO at the time of the civil war. Their father owned farm land in Jasper Co, MO that they may have sold to purchase land in AR.
