I wanted to respond to nobody's business they told you about. About 15 years ago a friend of mine had a friend who lived in a small town in Arkansas. On a whim this friend applied to Cherokee Nation with her oral tradition NA genealogy. She was sent paperwork three times and finally she was declared Cherokee Nation citizen and started getting checks. This is hearsay but I believe that because the lady said they told her she could not tell anyone about her application. Now, what would have happened if the Cherokee Nation had approved all those applications from Yell, Logan and Pope co. Ar.? The families knew who they were and they were not happy with the Citizenship Commission so they told their families they did not want to talk about it anymore.
Not all of the Cherokee and their assimilated Native American brothers and sisters removed to IT when the Cherokee Reserve was disbanded about 1837. They just moved across the Arkansas river if they did not want to go to Indian Terr. or went to unassigned lands in northern Arkansas like my great grandfather did. I am very interested in who did your dna test. Mine is with Family Tree DNA.

He was either Lee Stanley or Stanley Lee, I've got the Cowger family bible and will have to check. Stanley (Lee) was my grandfathers (Neil Cowger) brother. Georgia (Gant) & Stanley had 4 children. Kathryn Lee, David, Richard and Charles all deceased.

I found Columbus and Elizabeth in Mississippi in 1880, which would have been the first census that "Nony" would have appeared on. Anna was 8 at the time, siblings were Walter and twins Arthur and Andy. There is also a Jefferson St. John living in the household. Annie-Nannie-Nony could very well be the same person. On the 1900 census an Oscar Ford is living in Joplin MO with his father Crockett L. Ford (C.L.) and his wife Esther. His age is about right to have been born to C.L. and Nony if she died in the 1890s. Esther has borne 3 children which would eliminate Oscar as hers. Oscar's birth is listed as September 1890. The same Crockett and Esther were in Missouri through the 1930 census. The 1920 census has Vivian Nadine Ford in Jasper MO with parents W. Oscar and Alma Ford. Alma was born in Kansas, so here is a Kansas connection. Check out Find-A-Grave in Missouri for more info and a picture. I hope I have the correct family and have helped a little. I am not related but sure had a nice Saturday afternoon searching for the Fords. Jan
They were probably married in or near Yell Co AR. Nony seems to be born abt 1872, and died in 1890's. They had a son, Oscar Jr born AR abt 1891(?). Oscar Jr had a daughter Nadine Ford born abt 1912- Nadine is on the 1930 Parsons, Labette, KS census, and again in same place on the 1940 as Nadine Scaletty.

This info is from some old handwritten family records. These records indicate that Nony was the daughter of Mary Eliza and Columbus St. John. Oscar Ford Sr and Nony St. John can't be found in marriage records or in a census.

Don,

Was your ggrandfather related to James "Jim" Marshall Guest by any chance? He was born in 1871 and married Sarah Chesney in Yell County AR. I believe Jim later went by the surname of Getts. Would appreciate help with his fathers name if you know it.

MEL

Katherine Scarbrough, sister of James Everett & Goldie Scarbrough

Does anyone have any connection to any of the kids of Sarah Eliza Slover and William Henry Scarbrough? My friend's dad was James Everett Scarbrough one of the kids and, when William Henry Scarbrough was killed, his spouse, Sarah E. Slover, farmed out some of the kids to other families, kept some, and some joined the army before they were even of age.
We are just hoping that some of James Everett Scarbrough's brothers and sisters survived, had families, and will get in touch with us. Katherine was one of his sisters and she died in Higden, AR. Please get in touch with us while some still remember what happened to split up all the kids and maybe we can connect and share family info. sometime.

Hi just going through the yell county message board and ran across the name Elzie Gaines. My parents were born in yell county, ar and I remember my mother mentioning this name. In fact I think I have a picture of him. My parents were John B and Mary Estelle (Alexander)Benefield. Are their names familiar to you? I will go through my old pics and see if I can find it.
Crystal Benefield Head
