I am desperately trying to located the burial, or any information, on W. L. (William L.) Walker. He is found in Woodruff County on the 1880 census,(DeView area), with his wife Sarah & some of their children. He is then located in Cross County, when he marries a Mary Fountain and writes his will in Feb. 1892. He then marries again in 1896 to Mrs. M. J. Long. After that he disappears! He does not show up on ANY of the death records in Cross County; I have been to the Funeral Home there and gone through all the cemetery records with the Funeral Director, Mr. Kernodle. I thought that perhaps, his first wife, Sarah, died in Woodruff after the 1880 census. Then upon his death, maybe his body was taken to be buried beside her, somewhere in Woodruff County.

He had one duaghter, Susan A. Walker, who married twice in Woodruff County. First to a Danny Burns, and later to a George Sarrel/Sorrel). (I can't find them either) :>)

If ANY information is in Woodruff County on this person, W. L. Walker, I would certainly appreciate it if you counld pass it one to me.

Thank you so much for your time. Just email me; lwalker142@yahoo.com

I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about a fight that took place April 22nd, 1864 somewhere east of Augusta.
In the weeks after the fight at Fitzhughs Woods the Union tried to repeat the operation with more troops. Col. C.C. Andrews took troops upriver by boat to Augusta while the 8th Mo. cavalry went by way of Clarendon, Cotton Plant, then to Augusta were they hoped to catch the Confederate troops between them. Rather than join Andrews in Augusta the 8th Missouri got on the trail of some of the enemy & on the 22nd of April had a sharp fight lasting several hours with Freeman's command. There were a number of US killed wounded & captured, as well as an unknown number of Confederate casualties. Union accounts of this fight are few. The 8th Mo's records, which are sketchy as to location, called the fight Cache River, Cotton Plant, & Pumpkin Bend. One mention of the fight from a union deserter who fought with Freemans' command mentions the Colony fight on April 22nd, 1864. The colony was the area around modern day McCrory I believe. Any information about this fight or its possible location would be welcomed.
David Casto

Hi,

I am looking for any information about the family of Rev. John T. Mitchell, particularly his first wife, Lottie (my grandmother). He was born in 1869 to former slaves (Lee and Lucinda?) in Virginia. He lived in Shelby Co., TN as a child, and moved to Gregory, AR as a young man. He married Lottie (Charlotte) Holman - I'm unsure of the spelling, born about 1876 in TN. Lottie had an older sister (born about 1874) named Minnie who married Rev. Mitchell's brother, George. They also lived in the area, I believe.

Lottie died in 1917, and I can't find any more information on her or her sister, Minnie. She died when my father was only 6, so he couldn't give me much information himself.

If anyone has information or suggestions as to where I might look for information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Kristie Mitchell

Porter and cousins Lee, Theda and Jack Porter. Most of these lived either in Deview or McCory. We would like to communicate with living descendants of any of these family members.

Hello, all. I am searching for newspapers in Woodruff County, and specifically in Cotton Plant. During a visit to Little Rock earlier this year, I learned that there existed in the late 19th century and early 20th century a Cotton Plant newspaper which chronicled the news of black residents. Does anyone know how to obtain microfilm/fiche records of this publication? Thank you for your help.

Deborah

He told me
that he was from cotton plant. His family may have migrated
to cotton plant from Miss. He had a brother and I was told
that his either grandfather or father was killed by a mob.
The only information that I have is that his grandmother was
a midwife and grandfather was a preacher. My father was born
in 1921, and He lived in Chicago for 30 years. One of his
friends was the mayor or cheif of police at one time. I am
desperately trying to complete my family tree however I don't know enough about him to begin the research.
If you have any information please email me thanks.

Veterans Memorial Planned For Woodruff County

Veterans Memorial planned for Woodruff County, Arkansas

This November 11, 2007 our nation will once again observe Veterans Day. As we, as a nation, honor our veterans with a day of ceremony, we must pause to reflect upon the sacrifices all veterans have made throughout the history of our country so we as a people and as a nation can live and worship in freedom.
A large number of our nation's veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their life for their country. Others have been forever scarred by the injuries and horrors of war. Still others were away at their duty when family members died or children took first steps. This Veterans Day we should all reflect on these sacrifices and strive to give honor to all of our nation's veterans.
An effort is underway to build a veterans memorial on the grounds of the Woodruff County Courthouse to honor all Woodruff County veterans of all wars, living or dead. The names of the veterans inscribed on the wall will honor not only the veterans, but their families as well. The public's generosity is needed to ensure that the names of all our county's veterans will be inscribed on the memorial wall.
Former Woodruff County native Joe Stanley and former Cross County native Martin Smith have graciously donated thrir time and talent in designing the Woodruff County Veterans Memorial. Both men are partners in two of Little Rock's finest architectural firms. The memorial will consist of a granite wall in which the names of our veterans will be inscribed. The wall will be located in a courtyard setting as pictured in a drawing on the front page of the Woodruff County Monitor, Wednesday, November 7, 2007. The walk leading to the wall will be lined with flags representing each of the five branches of our armed forces and a flag representing all MIAs and POWs. The United States flag will fly alone at the north side of the memorial. The memorial will be constructed and dedicated in late Spring 2008.
Local genealogist and writer for the Woodruff County Monitor Gary Telford, has graciously donated his time and expertise to the arduous task of compiling a complete and detailed list of all Woodruff County Veterans. At the time of this publication, Telford had recorded 2,400 veteran's names in his database. These names were gathered by visiting our county's many cemeteries and reviewing names provided by the county clerk's office recorded from discharge papers filed at the courthouse. With the public now being requested to register the names of other veterans, living or buried outside Woodruff County, the number is expected to grow to between 3,500 and 4,000 names.
The public can register a veterans name for inclusion on the wall by filling out the form located in this weeks Woodruff County Monitor and mailing it along with a check or money order to the address printed on the form. Forms will also be available at local businesses around the county. Registration may also be done at Bank of McCrory or Bank of Augusta. The money paid to register veterans names or any money donated to the memorial is completely tax deductible. The Woodruff County Veterans Memorial Fund is a nonprofit organization. The fee for registration is $100.00 for one name, $150.00 for two names and $180.00 for three names. A deadline of January 31, 2008 has been set for registration of a veterans name. This deadline is necessary because the granite has to be ordered and the engraving done in time for dedication by late Spring 2008.
Please help make this memorial a reality by registering a veteran you wish to honor. We owe all our veterans a hugh debt for the sacrifices made on our behalf. This is one way we can try to repay them.
For more information, call the county judge's office at 870-347-5206. You may also contact Gary Telford, research chairman for the veterans names, at 501-724-2490 or wgt@centurytel.net. Gary will mail you a form to be completed. Make check or money order payable to: Woodruff County Veteans Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 448, McCrory, AR 72101.

Cora Brown was married to Dorsey Brown. They lived in Gregory. Her maiden name was Wilson (Koral Wilkins mis-spelled on 1910 census) and she was raised by her grandmother Jane. Her parents either died or ran off I am not sure wich. She was buried in New Community Cemetary "Better known as Buckeye." She died in 1970. She is the best link that I have to my Wilson Family. Her father was named Will Wilson born in White County Arkansas around 1873. I don't have any proof that he ever lived in Woodruff County. Her mother's name was Ivory Quarells. This information was obtained from funeral home records. Will is my great-great uncle and son of Jane Wilson Johnson who is my great-great-great grandmother. If anyone has any information on this lady please contact me.

Hi, I am pretty new to researching geneaology. I am looking for information on Osburn Hunter, born in 1851 and died in 1901 in Arkansas according to family records. He is my great-great grandfather. I am also looking for his wife, Narcissa Haley, born in Missouri in maybe 1847 and died in 1928 (Arkansas also). If anyone has any information or pictures of headstones in the area, I would love to hear about it! Thanks all.

Does anybody who frequents this board know anything about a family with the surname Wilson who came to the Gregory and Augusta areas in the early 1900's. The mother whose name was Jane, had children by her 1st husband. Will (1875-?), Homer(1892-1940), Floyd, Nard (also known as Northern or NC 1877-1924), and Effie Wilson. Jane (1855-?) married Dave Johnson in 1903. Effie (1888) married Harland "Duck" Smith in 1906 and divorced him in 1913. After this marriage she was married to a man whose last name was Holmes. Then she married Jordan Brown Sr. in 1949 and she died in 1982. If you have any information or have seen anything that relates to these people, I would appreciate the info.

I am hoping that someone can help me. I was supposed to visit the burial site of William L Walters, but I was rained out. He is buried in the Hunter Cemetery, Section A in Hunter, AR. Born 1843 in Sullivan Co Indiana, died in 1905 in Hunter, Ar. Could someone please take a picture of his tombstone and e-mail it to me or send it to me via snail mail? I would also apprecate any information on how to obtain his obit. All I have is a write up for the Sullivan Times where his brother and his sister-in-law traveled to Hunter in Dec of 1905.

Also if he ties into any one elses family and you know how he ended up in Arkansas I would love to hear it. All the rest of his family didn't make it any farther than the Walbash Valley in Indiana and Illinois. Thank you for any thing you can share.
Kristi Walters Sircy

This week, November 10, 2004, in the Woodruff County Monitor is the largest section, 14 pages, that has ever been published in a newspaper in the State of Arkansas, honoring all the war veterans of Woodruff County. This work is the result of two years research and I am very proud of it. We will be naming Woodruff County men from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish American War, Mexican War, WW I, WW II, Koren War and Vietnam War. Many sketches will give their service record, many with pictures. Also included will be the history of some of the wars and other information. This will be one issue you will not want to miss. It will be a great sourse of genealogy information.
Hope you all get to read it.
Best regards,
Gary Telford
Family Roots
Woodruff County Monitor
wgt@centurytel.net

His first wife was Lucy and they had two daughters named Octillia and Cordelia. Octillia was born in Woodruff, AR. They must have moved to Falls Co., Tx before Cordelia was born in 1881.

David J Johnson's parents are Washington (of GA) and Elizabeth (of NC) Johnson. His mother is found with his siblings in Woodruff Co., AR in the 1870 Census (widowed). In the 1860 Census they are in St. Francis Co, AR. Prior to that, they are in Alabama.

Siblings (most born in AL) are as follows:

Benjamin
Stephen
Sarah
William
Caroline
Martha
Washington
Margaret
Daniel

I have not found anything definate on any of the siblings, but they prob. stayed in Arkansas.

David's married his 2nd wife, Mary T Barton on 27 Nov 1891, they had three children:
Alaska (Laska), Roscoe, and Annie Lois. David and Mary are buried in Covington Cemetery in Falls Co., Tx.

Would like to connect to any of the siblings mentioned above.
Thanks,
Lisa

According to the 1900 census of Cache Township, Woodruff County, Arkansas there is a listing for James Heilig, family include Charity Heilig, Eliza Heilig, John Heilig, and James Heilig. At least a few of these are from N.C. What I need to do is to find a connection, members or whatever connected with this area. Is CacheTownship still around? These Heiligs are AFrican American. I am related to them, and need to locate them. Please. Thanks. Joseph

Family stories (from quite authentic sources) are that Daddy's uncle, Marshall (M. H.) Patterson was ambushed and murdered by bootleggers. I know he was at earlier points in his life the sheriff of Woodruff County, and I've found a couple of enchanting acoounts of his part in dealing with a train robbery in 1891.
I know he died on May 20, 1920, and is buried in the Augusta Memorial Cemetery.

What I don't know is the story about his death. Are there newspaper accounts? (Gary, do you have anything in your vast collection?)

My mother, a sister and brother who lost their life in a house fire just outside of Cotton Plant in 1948 were buried in White Church Cemetery. Which my mothers family lived south of White Church.

I know that the funeral service was held in White Church which was just across the road from the cemetery, according to my mothers last living brother who I had the pleasure of meeting. I questioned Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Dorothy Carter about the events of that day and of White Church.

But can anyone tell me what kind of church it was and what happened to it? I have asked several people but so far no one seems to know or remember.

May God Bless,
Jerry

"Let not your heart be troubled:
John 14:1

Anyone willing to do courthouse lookup?

Is there anyone in the area willing to do some lookups at the courthouse for a reasonable fee? It is too far me to try and do personally, I have ordered all I can through the LDS, so now need to try another avenue. I would need a marriage license, some tax records, and possibly an obit copied. I would supply all dates needed so you wouldn't have to wade through every book. Many thanks.

SPRADLIN White River Township

I am hoping someone can please help me. After almost 20 years, I believe I may have the mystery of my great grandmother solved!

I am searching for info on the B.T. Spradlin Family.

They are shown on the 1900 Woodruff county, White River Township census as:

B.T. (the "T" might possibly be a J) dob 1859 AR
Frances spouse dob 1859 or 1869 AR
John B. Horton Stepson 05/1882 AR
Clara M. daughter 05/1888 AR
Millie daughter 06/1891 AR (this is unreadable, but might possible be Millie)

For years, we have thought my grandmother's maiden name was HORTON. But after searching, I am almost sure that this is her. According to this census record, the Spradlin's have been married 12 years.

Does anyone have any information on anyone in this family, or can suggest some leads for me to follow? Also burial info, etc?

Thanks in advance!
Lisa

GREGORY POINT FAMILIES:

Seeking family members or information from anyone who knew of any of these African American families. Moses Johnson, (My Grandfather) Bledsoe, Harston, Tuggle, Guest, Morris, Holmes, Vinson, or Sample. Grandfather Johnson was born in Fayetteville,Tennessee in 1879 but migrated to Lonoke where he met and married Letha Tuggle. They had eight children. Letha, along with four of the children died in 1919 of the great Flu Epidemic. Moses moved on to live in other cities. Grays, Devalls Bluff, Dixie, Cotton Plant, and finally Gregory Point. He was a member of the Guildfild Baptist Church and also a member of the Gregory Masonic Lodge # 179. He met and married Leona Bledsoe daughter of John and Octavia Bledsoe. Social Security information indicates that Moses at one time worked for the Menesha Lumber Company in Patterson. This documentation states that his father's name was Abram Johnson and mother's name was Mary Bumbry. I would truly like to establish this as fact. If anyone has any information on any of the above, I would be so grateful to hear from you. Please reply to taylormorris@sbcglobal.net Thank you.
