James Herron Campbell was born November 23, 1841 in Mecklenburg County, Kentucky. He was one of six children born to the union of Alexander and Sarah "Sallie" Worthington (Kinchloe) Campbell.
In 1861 he came to Augusta, and the same year he enlisted in Company A, First Kentucky Cavalry, and served until the surrender. He was wounded through the right shoulder-blade by a gunshot at a railroad fight under Gen. Forrest, and was in the principal engagements of his regiment. At the close of the service he returned to Kentucky, and there remained until 1870 when he came back to Augusta.
James H. Campbell married in 1872, Miss Eliza Yoder Hopkins, of Kentucky and to this union was born two known children.
