H. G. Gorman

I have discovered two records of a "H. G. Gorman" in Union County, and am trying to determine if he could be the same person as my gr-gr-grandfather Henry G. Gorman. Henry was born in Alabama in about 1848, and later moved to Phillips County, AR, before disappearing from the records after 1880.

I have a possible census record of his son Paul Gorman being in Union County in 1900, so I have reason to believe that this H. G. Gorman may be my Henry. I can't find any Union County census record for H. G. Gorman himself.

One of the two records is a Union County Civil War pension application dated 1907, for a H.G. Gorman. I have ordered it to see if his full name is spelled out on the document.

The other is a Union County marriage record for an H.G. Gorman marrying an R.A. Griffith in 1887. I am showing the reference as book #A-1, page 042, and am trying to get my hands on the actual document, or to find somebody who can do a lookup for me. I tried to order it from VitalChek, but it requires info that I don't have, such as the full exact date of the marriage, so I can't seem to place the order. I haven't been able to find any ordering info to get the document directly from the Union County Clerk's Office, where I presume it would be kept.

Can anybody point me in the right direction, or give me any information that would be of use to me? Thanks very much.

William Jameson m. Widow Lucy Durham ...Settled Lapile Tnship Union Co.

Researching a Widow Lucy Durham who married William Jameson in Monroe Co GA and settled in Union Co AR. William was previously married to Martha Malone who died and was buried in Jones Co GA. He was left with a daughter Martha A. Jameson among others. Lucy was previously married to Howell J. Durham who died in 1849 at age 49. I assume he died in GA since she remarried in Monroe Co. GA.
Howell and Lucy had 12 children. We have Howell and Lucy's children and spouses but that's about it. We don't know where they settled or who Howell's grandchildren are except for my gg grandfather Solon Cicero Stephen Durham who married Mary Cathern Bourland in St Francois Co Mo 1868.
His brother Charles Daugherty Durham married Missouri Elizabeth Jones in St Francois Co in 1867.
Has anyone ever heard of this Lucy Woodliff Durham Jameson in their line before?
Lucy died in 1867 or 1868. We got alot of this information from a relative in TX but that is all. There was no place of burial. Solon, we believe was in OK until he moved to TX.
Matilda is buried in Union Co. Would appreciate information on this line. Matilda and Thomas Sidney are my gggrandparents.

Seeking information on the Roberson family who moved to Union County in late 1840's - early 1850's.

Traditional family history shows William (Henry) Roberson with at least 1 brother, John. John had children who included John, Chris & "Nannie". Another source indicated that James, John & Henry were brothers and lived in Union County AR.

John C. Roberson of Union Co AR may fit that description. He had other children than those named above and a daughter Nancy who could have been nicknamed "Nannie".

Land Records show James, John & Henry had land located near each other. 1860 Census shows James with son James age 26 living next to John age 21.

1850 Hardeman TN Census shows the 2 James and John at correct ages to be the same family in the same household.

The challenge: Henry died before the 1860 census and was no longer living at home in 1850, having gotten married in 1847.

Do these individuals actually connect? Is anyone working on the Robersons of Union County?

Any speculations, ideas, assistance welcome.

Could someone who has access to the complete Union County 1860 census please look up Pleasant H. Thompson. My grandmother's grandfather was Pleasant Henderson Thompson and his wife was Martha Burnett Miller and their daughter who was born in about 1856 was Martha Pleasant Thompson (my grandmother's mother). Martha Pleasant Thompson married C. L. James and is buried in the Hughes Cemetery in St. Francis Co. Arkansas. Thank you. HAnderson

Family in Union County Arkansas

I'm looking for information on my family in Arkansas (African-American). They are from the Union County area in the cities of Smackover & El Dorado.

My grandfather was Ricie Gilmore (b 1914, Smackover, Ar). His parents were Ed Gilmore (b 1891 McMurrian, Ar) & Rosa Lee Bradford (b 1895 Smackover, Ar). I'm not sure what Ed's parents names were but I believe that his father's name was either Richard or Wesley. Rosa's parents were Isaiah Bradford & Mary.

My grandfather, Ricie, married Mattie Lee Gaines (b 1917) in Smackover. Her parents were Norman Gaines and Ida M McElroy. Ida's parents were Frank and Sallie McElroy of Smackover. Frank's parents were Turner & Adeline McElroy.

Any information would be welcomed.

I am looking for directions to Camp Grinstead, named after Col. Hiram Grinstead (Tappan`s Brig.) of the 33rd Ark that fell at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. This was a encampment during The War of Northern Aggression for the regiments of Arkansas and Missouri soldiers from May 25 to June 22 1864. It is somewhere between Mt. Holly and Lisbon. After a month at this encampment the regiments moved to Camden out on the Wire Road.

Regards,
Larry Young
Graves of Eliza Ann Browder and Children

I am searching for information on the graves of Eliza Ann Browder and her 4 children. She and her husband, Martin Van Buren Browder, left Florida and headed to Texas about 1874. Allegedly, Eliza and 4 children died of swamp fever along the way. I can find no documentation, explaination nor reasoning as to why they were in Arkansas. Family lore says that Martin buried his wife and 4 children in a "common grave" and fenced it off with cypress wood. He then continued on to Texas with his young daughter Belle Matilda. No word as to weather or not he left any other defining information on the grave.

Thanks,

Vickie
MBrowder53190@aol.com
Family information

My Cousin & I are trying to locate any information concerning our Mothers Family. Both of our grandparents died in their early 40's leaving 8 children the oldest 18 and the baby approx 1 year. Very little contact was had by these children with other family members and 6 of them has passed away. Our grandfather spelled his name James Lonnie
Foirriestier and he had a twin brother named Andrew Fonnie who spelled his last name as Foistier. We found where their mother Addie Perkins married a George Forrester in Union County Arkansas in 1888. We also found a record where an Addie Perkins married a David Smyers not for sure about this spelling in 1894. We are not sure what year the twins were born however according to what info we have been able to find Addie Perkins was married several times. We don't know how many or who too. One of the biggest problems we have run into is the spelling of the Last Name here in the Longview Texas area all the Family spelled their last name Foirriestier we have not ideal where this spelling came from. Most of the information we have been able to find has come from Union County and Pike County Ark
I am in search of my families. The first year that they appear on the AR census is 1870, I beleive that they migrated from GA, AL, AND LA.The sir name that I have spent more time on is the Sledges because I have more information, however it was easier to research the Nelson family because a lot of the family names have been passed down. If anyone has information on any of the Sir names listed above, I will be most grateful. My grandfather was Sidney Sledge Jr. birth year 1905, his father Sidney Sledge Sr. has a birth year listed of 1873, his father James OR Jim Sledge listed between 1840 and 1843, James's wife Ann, listed with a birth years between 1842 and 1845. I hope that someone out there has information on these families. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Sue

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: AUGUST WILSON MOUTON
Born: August 23, 1918.
Date of loss: May 15, 1952 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Union County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Info Requested on Representative Jesse J. Craig of El Dorado

Hi,

I would like information on Jesse J. Craig of El Dorado. He was born in November 1870 in Johnson Township, south of El Dorado near Hillsboro. He was the son of Uriah C. Craig (1839 - 1900/1910) and Drucilla Alphin (1849 - 1920/1930). Jesse's father moved to El Dorado and then north, to Conway, in Faulkner County Arkansas. However, it appears that Jesse remained in Union County for his entire life.

Jesse married Corinne Smith on 29 July 1894 in Union County. He worked as a deputy clerk in 1900, a Dry Goods Merchant in 1910, and as a newspaper manager in 1920. By 1930, he had been elected as one of Union County's representatives.

Can anyone tell me when he and his wife died and where they are buried? Also, where is their son buried... Henry Grady Craig (1895 - after 1930) and wife Violet.

Thanks,

Tim

Hi,

I am trying to learn more about the families of two sisters, Cynthia and Nancy Craig, daughters of Thomas S. Craig and Sarah Ogden.

George Tullis who married Cynthia Craig in 1869. They lived in Lapile Township in 1880 and 1900. Does anyone know where they are buried and their exact dates of birth/death? I can find no record of them after 1900.

Cynthia's sister Nancy Craig married Gabriel J. Milner in 1869, and they lived in central Union County in 1870 and 1880. Does anyone know where they are buried and their exact dates of birth/death?

Thanks,

Tim Hudson

Charles B. McHenry

I am seeking information on Charles B. McHenry, s/o Robert Woods McHenry. His two older brothers were named William and Thomas. In 1860, at age 28, he married 15 yr old Martha H. Harper in Union Co. AR. He was a 1st/2nd Lt. in the 9th AR Inf. Did he really die in 1862? Or, did he head to TX after leaving the CSA.

There are a no. of coincidences between the above and my great-grandfather, Charles Benjamin McHenry. He was born in AR in 1832/33, was a physician (father was reportedly a physician b. in VA), was in the Civil War. He married Cordelia Ann Walton in 1867 and in 1868, they had a son, William Thomas.

Bergschneider/Beers family mystery

I wrote awhile back about a family secret regarding my
grandmother, I'd said we'd always known her as Alberta
Frances Berkschneider, but I'd spelled it wrong, and
got a few facts wrong, but was working with what I
knew at the time. It was actually, Bergschneider, and
even though she'd been married twice, first to Raleigh
Vestal Robinson, and then to R. Lloyd Henry, we just
always referred to her by her childhood name, but when
locating a birth certificate for my dad, Ronald Lee
Robinson, we discovered that her name was Alberta
Sylvia Mary Beers, born in MO. Right before she passed
away in 1972, she told my dad there was a family
secret, but it was never revealed to him. Well, since
I last wrote, and with many prayers and help from kind
souls, I have discovered the secret that was haunting
my dad for so long, but unfortunately, it was both
confusing and hurtful, and has opened up many more new
questions. I earlier wrote that my grandmother,
Alberta may have been in foster homes, that would
explain why she was now called Beers, and that she had
a sister named Donna, and a brother named Leonard
Beers, and her parents were Bert C. and Margaret Clara
Beers. Well, part of that is true, but not quite. My
grandmother was indeed born Alberta Frances
Bergscheider, but her natural parents were Omah
Frances Bergschneider and Anton(Tony) Bergschneider,
she had a sister, Donna and a brother named Gilbert.
When she went to live with the Beers family, I think
around the age of 3 or 4, could be a little older, she
acquired a new brother there, named Leonard Beers. The
hurtful and confusing part of the secret was that,
when my grandmothers' mother, Omah was in the hospital
giving birth to Gilbert, her husband, Albertas' dad,
Anton, gave her or sold her to the Beers family! When
my g-grandma came home from the hospital, and
discovered what had happened she went to a Catholic
Church they belonged to, (not yet sure which one,
although, I think it was in Edwardsville, IL, where
Omah died in 1958), the priest told her to hush up
about it, and do as your husband wishes, she of course
divorced him, and did searches for her daughter, but
to know avail. I don't yet know what resources and
help she got in her search, I do know that at some
point, Anton was thrown in jail for non support of the
two remaining children, Donna, and Gilbert. Besides
being apparently evil, Anton was not a poor man, I was
told he was a commodities trader on the Chicago
Exchange. Omah eventually married a deputy sheriff,
Frank Spindler in 1932, and he tracked my grandmother
to California. Around her junior high school period,
Alberta went to stay with her natural mother, but only
stayed for about a year, before returning to the Beers
in I think, Los Angeles or Oceanside, CA. There's
actually a street in Oceanside named after Alberta and
Leonard in a subdivision called Plumosa Heights. I
hope to uncover why this was done, this wasn't a legal
adoption, how did this happen, how did Anton know Bert
Beers, what agencies were involved, etc. My father has
been very ill with cancer, and now he can have some
peace, now that he knows the secret. I have to thank
many folks who've helped in this search, but one in
particular, Jan Frey, has been the one who opened this
wide open, she saw my inquiry here, and passed along
some numbers to Bergschneiders in the Edwardsville
area, and lo and behold, the first one turned out to
be Gilbert Bergschneiders wife, George Ann, she in
turn gave me the number to Donnas' husband, Harlowe
Neudecker in North Olmstead, Ohio, and both of them
revealed the secret to me. Now we're going to all
share stories and pictures that I've never known
existed. In my earlier quest, I said there were
pictures of my grandmother on my Myspace, and soon, I
get to add many more, and I am ever so grateful, and
truly feel blessed, and believe my angels have guided
all these wonderful people to help. If anyone would
like to see them, they're at
myspace.com/ledbyintuition Thank you, Cynthia Rena
Robinson Fischelli

I read recently someone was talking about some Cemetery Books for Union County. I was not aware there were any and don't know the years they cover. I would appreciate it if someone would look up Johnnie (Johnie) Houston. He is African-American. They lived in El Dorado and he died between 1911-1914 as far as I can tell. The family also lived in the Huttig and Strong areas. I don't have much information on him except that he was supposed to have died in a sawmill accident. My best guess is it was the Union County Sawmill. Thank you for any assistance you are able to provide me. Catherine

James A. Croswell married Lousettie S. Ogden in Union Co AR on 9 Nov 1843. They lived in southern AR and raised their family there. Lousettie died in 1875 and James in 1893.

James & Lousettie had a number of children, but due to their being missed on several censuses, the only ones I know of are:

1. Isaac W. Croswell (1848-1891) married Nancy Goodson in 1877;

2. Elizabeth Croswell (1851-1893), married Odom Augustus Pepper in 1875;

3. John F. Croswell (1853-1928), married Lou Goodson in 1878;

4. Caline Robert Croswell (1864-1891).

James, Lousette, and these children were all buried in the Olive Branch Methodist Cemetery in southern Union County.

Lousettie was the daughter of Isaac Ogden (1797-1859) and Milinda Reed (1801-1860).

It appears that James had a brother, Matthew Croswell, who lived near them.

Any further information on these people would be appreciated.

Looking for Joe B. Gulley, or family, they befriended my grandma, Alberta Robinson

I'm hoping someone will help me fill in the holes of my grandmothers' life, around the late 50s, the Gulley/Gully family sheltered my dad and his mom in El Dorado, Ark. I'm hoping maybe their descendents are still there, and might remember something, and/or have pictures. My dad is now 65, and in very bad health, with lymphatic nonhodgkins cancer and we're desperately searching clues regarding a family secret. My grandmother passed away, before revealing it.
It's all he talks about now. One clue could be in the name discrepancy we found. His mom always said her
name was Alberta Francis Berkschneider, but awhile
back, when locating his birth certificate, it showed
she was really Alberta Sylvia Mary Beers, we don't
know if maybe shes was adopted, she'd said she was in
foster homes, she had a brother, Leonard Beers who
passed away on Dec. 2 2003 in Mission Veijo, CA., she
mentioned a sister, Donna, who may have married a
Gill, but have not located a record of her. Maybe she
was married before she married my grandpa, Raleigh
Vestal Robinson, they were supposedly married in
Sparks, Nevada, we know she was married a 2nd time to
Lloyd Henry. She is buried at Engelwood Cemetery in
Slayton Tx., under Alberta F. Henry, she was born Feb.
1 1922 in Missouri, she passed away on May 28, 1972.
Her parents are Bert C.Beers, b. in Nebraska, and mom was either Margaret Clara, or Clara
Margaret Beers, b. in Illinois, her parents from
Germany, other records showed France and Germany. Bert
was married once before to a Myrtle Emery. One of the ladies supposedly died in a car
crash in Edwardsville, Ill. in 1958. Bert Beers mother
had the surname of Salmon. My g-mother said she was
Pennslyvania Dutch and German. I've tried several
times to trace the Berkschnieder line, but have come
up empty, does anyone know the origins, or have any
pictures, also, the surname of Beers.
My maternal great grandparents, Bert C. Beers, and
Margaret Clara Beers moved to Oceanside California and
he developed a subdivision there, called Plumosa
Heights, and named streets after his kids, Alberta and
Leonard. Also trying to find out Margaret Claras'
surname and former married names,I found a record that
in 1928, Bert was trying to have his marriage
annulled, because her former divorce wasn't legal but
later in the 1930 census, she is still with him
though. If anyone has any info, please reach me. Thank you, Cynthia Fischelli

My email is cfischelli@yahoo.com, and my url for
Myspace is myspace.com/ledbyintuition I have some pictures there of my dad, and grandma, also some of her 2nd husband,
Lloyd Henry.

Cynthia Robinson Fischelli

Does anyone have a link to the J. B. Morgan family listed in the 1850 Union County, Arkansas census? And does anyone know if Alfred Morgan who married Loarina Harrison is a son of J. B. Morgan? I believe Alfred Morgan ended up in Tishomingo County, Mississippi married to Mary Frances Walker. I'm not sure if he deserted his family in Arkansas or what, but sure would like to find some folks researching these Morgans.
Carolyn Johnson

Adams/Willoughby/McClendon Family

Looking for anyone else researching the ADAMS family of Union County, Arkansas. This bunch lived around Champagnolle. Progenitor Floyd Adams came from Georgia through Alabama about 1860. He and his wife Sarah Elizabeth raised a large family - most buried at Champagnolle. I am
descended from their son, Seaborn L. Adams who married
Nora Willoughby. Her mother was a McClendon from Alabama. I have info to share - I know some of their descendents still live in the area. Looking for someone who will do lookups
in courthouse in exchange for New Orleans area research.
