I'm doing research on my Stone County ancestors. My father, Eulis Rorie, was born near Timbo, at Onia. His mother was Lucinda Caroline "Linie" Morrison, who was a well-known fiddle player as was my father. My grandfather was Wayne Rorie and his father was Newt Rorie, then Hezekiah Rorie, then Absalom Rorie, all of the Onia area (Stone County).I'm also looking for information on the Ticer family. My g-g grandfather Hezekiah was married to Louisa A. Ticer, pronounced lu-i-sa. My g-grandfather Sabe Morrison's wife, Mary Elizabeth Talley; my g-g grandfather Thomas Morrison's wife, Mary Ann Cornett; my g-grandmother Sara Beaver's family and my g-g grandfather Samuel Johnson Beaver's wife, Mary Emiline Cargile, and my g-g grandfather Robertson Talley's wife, Lucinda Stanfield. I will gladly share informaton with cousins.

I am looking information on my ancestors. Grant Holliday married Nancy Ann Noble in 1890 Breathitt Co, KY. Nancy Ann was born abt 1871. They later moved to Morgan County, Ky and are tied to the Perry County KY Holliday's. The children of Nancy Ann and Grant are:

1. Philip "Sheridan" Holliday b. 1891 m. Lula Gilliam (sp) in Kentucky
2. Ida May Holliday b. 1895 m. 1)Lockford Salyers 2)Marvin Tiller 3)Otis Heidleburg (sp?)
3. McKinley Holliday b. 1897 - died young
4. Ellen Holliday b. 1899 - died young
5. Rachel Holliday b. ? - died young
6.Theodore "Roosevelt" Holliday b. 1902 m. Ethel Amy Southard in Arkansas (my grandparents)
7. Mahala Holliday b. 1905 m. Frances Green in Arkansas

Grant was killed in 1905. Sometime after Grant's death, Nancy Ann married Charlie Gullett and moved to Oklahoma for about 1-2 years, then settled in the Stone/Izard Couny area in Arkansas where Nancy Ann died in the late 1940's.

Grant Holliday had a brother John L. Holliday who married Rachel Noble. I think that Rachel Noble and Nancy Ann Noble were sisters.

Charlie Gullett was married before. His children from this marriage were: Oval (f), Okel (f), Golday (or Goldie)(m), and another male. These children are thought to have remained in Arkansas.

Ethel Amy Southard's parents were Isaac Zach Southard and Tennessee Louise Qualls. I have quite a bit of info on the Southard's.

Any information on these Noble's, Holliday's, Charlie Gullett and Southard's would be greatly appreciated!

Dianne

Stone County gravestones in a creek?

I recently came across some correspondance from about 10 years ago re: the location of some family graves in Stone County. Part of the letter reads, "It is thought all were buried in a cemetery located on the Case place that was bulldozed and made into a pasture with tombstones being pushed off into the creek."

Now, while I have a problem with property owners bulldozing gravestones so the cows won't be inconvenienced while grazing, has there ever been an effort to locate these stones in the creek and see if any of them are still legible? I don't live in Stone county or I'd be visiting this creek. Is there any way some group could undertake this as a service project??
Margie EMS Branscum - 1893 - 1976

I am looking for any information on Margie Branscum who was born about 1893 in Arkansas and who died in 1976. She was my great-grandmother. My grandfather was Sherman Treat born in 1916 in Arkansas. Her husband and my great-grandfather was William Mason Treat - Son of John Stephen Treat and Josephine Huffines.

I only know her approximate birthdate from Census records after she married William Mason. I have one photo of her with another man identified on the back of the photo as JC Branscum son of Jim Branscum. My mother says that it is a photo of her brother. Therefore, I think her brother is JC Branscum and her father is Jim Branscum but I don't have any other information. I would greatly appreciate any help in positively identifying her family. She lived in the Big Flat and Moro Arkansas areas in the mid 1900s. I also know that sometime after William Mason Treat died she remarried to a "Doc" Reid.
Hello,
I'm seeking any information about my ancestor/great-grandmother Martha Rosetta Hayes, b. 16 April 1888 in Clarksvale, Stone Co., Ark. Married Willie Eddie Pruett in 1906 (AR or OK?), died 4 June 1947 in Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA. 8 children, among them, Edmon Doyle Pruett, b. 7 Mar. 1918, d. 24 Jan 1984. She used the name Rosetta more than Martha as I understand. Daughter of John Hayes and Florance Reed. She was likely part Native American, possibly Choctaw, Cherokee or Chicasaw, possibly on her maternal side.

StoneCoAr - New WebSite in Town

Hello StoneCountians:
I'm Charles,
My research in Stone County has been scratch and pick from just about everywhere the search term stone county arkansas will take me. For two years now I've watched the arstone website at argenweb. Not much activity going on there. I've seen some nice county pages from various places and states and have been working on some ideas for Our Stone County. I've been trying to get in touch with Myles, arstone coordinator to discuss these ideas. If you know him, maybe you could lead him here to respond to my requests. During my research for GOODWIN of Richwoods Township, 1880 - 1930, I've collected a bunch of data concerning Stone County. My GOODWIN line is brickwalled prior to 1880 and discoveries of County History started me to thinking that maybe a webpage is in order which lays out some fundamental knowledge about the County, and pieces together some of the resources I've found regarding Land Patents, Rectangular Grid Surveys, Acts of Congress - 1820, Land set aside for Public Sale and 1862, The Homestead Act, The Land Offices involved, Transportation - Roads, Rivers, Trains, Military Units, Census, and several more topics. The idea struck me to investigate this Board to see what people are looking for in Stone County. Now here's my idea. I've written an HTML type Stone County Web Site with my ideas for encouraging participation in Stone County Research. This page is in its informal draft stage at present and there are still a few areas of research necessary, but all in all the fundamentals are layed out...
Our Fathers that settled in the White River area prior to Arkansas Statehood actively participated in the formation of the Arkansas Territory, Communities were established, Population increased, and through their participation the State was Founded, Counties established, and the governments of such put into practice. I believe the same can be done in respect to a web presence for Our Stone County. It is ours. We should be proud to give ourselves and those researching Stone County the best dang web site on the net(forgive my boastfulness).
So with all due respect for the representation we presently have and the wonderful folks that give their time to give us what we have, I now make a motion we take it to the next level and I offer for your review and critique and submission of data Stone County Web Site graciously given the server space at RootsWeb Freepages on
http://www.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ctheflame/proje...
At the time of this post, the page is up for viewing and comment by way of this message board. It is far from being finished and the links are active but they don't take you to their respected pages yet as I am still building them. There is enough information though for everyone to get a general idea of what I'm trying to do.
With everyone's participation and input I believe we have a shot at being Stone County representation for the USGenWeb, ArGenWeb, RootsWeb, the Several Historical Societies, and the World Wide Web.
So, there you have it. Everyone is invited to participate.
Thanks for your patience with such a wordy post and Good Luck to All in your Journeys.
Kind regards, Charles

Roy Mills families

My grandfather, Roy H. Mills, was born in Stone County. He was adopted by the Mills as a young boy. His foster father was John Mills who either owned or ran a store in either Alco or Timbo. His birth mother married a George and lived until after 1955. We were told by relatives his "real" last name was Powell. Does anyone still have any info on him and these families? Any help will be appreciated.

I am seeking information about my grandparents who lived in Stone County near Timbo, AR and died there in the early 1950s. They were John Robert POWELL and Mary Elizabeth LOONEY Powell. Their children included Mildred Marie ("Jo"), Naomi ("Nomi"), Artie/Ardith, Otis, Oris ("Dude"), Otto(?), and Gladys. Mary Elizabeth was born 8/23/1877; she had at least one sister named Lillian. Her mother's name was Margaret Farris LOONEY. John Robert's mother was named Mary Etna CLARKE; I have no birth date for him. If anyone can give me any clues/leads, I would be ever so appreciative. ---DG Allen

My husband's grandfather was William Earl Bell. His family had a home in Independence County; Will had several brothers, and it's one of them I am hunting now.

Could someone do a cemetery lookup on James Edwin Bell, b 22 Mar 1872? His wife was named Mattie, and while she and James appear in the 1900 census (and as having been married 6 years), he does not appear with her in the 1910 census; she's listed as widowed.

I know (from the census) that they were living in Franklin TWP in 1900, and that by 1910, she was living in Wallace TWP. They had no children.

James' older brother Clete died in Oklahoma (presumably) but is buried in the Campground Cemetery, Bethesda (Independence Co.) as are his parents and another brother. His two sisters are also buried in Arkansas (Newport and Augusta). William Earl is buried in Oklahoma - I've visited his grave site. But James Edwin is pretty unknown on the rest of his life.

Would appreciate help on this; and am willing to share what I already know on the family.

You can, if you like, respond directly to PatJBell@aol.com

This is horrable that anyone would destroy a cemetery. Isn't there state and federal laws against that? If the farmer who dozed the stones in the creek and the developer who wants to build new homes are known, why hasn't someone turned them in? It may be too late for this cemetery but maybe it will save the next one. mary

Is there a Cedar Creek Cemetery in Stone County Arkansas?

I am trying to double check a potentially erroneous bit of info. Elizabeth Branscomb, married to Andrew J. May, family living in Union and Johson Counties of Illinois, is sometimes reported as follows
Death: 12 DEC 1886 in Cedar Creek, Stone County, Arkansas 1
Burial: Cedar Creek Cemetery, Cedar Creek, Stone County, Arkansas
Burial: AFT 12 DEC 1886 Cedar Creek Cemetery, Cedar Creek, Stone County, Arkansas

The problem is that on his Civil War Pension paperwork, Andrew says she died in 1875. He then remarried to a woman who he helpfully names "Mary" who dies in abt 1883 he says. In the 1880 census, he is in fact living with a woman named Mary while in 1870 he is found with Elizabeth.

I am hoping that someone from Stone County might be able to tell me that there is no such place as Cedar Creek Cemetery in Stone county.

Note that there is a Cedar Creek cemetery in Johnson County Illinois, where some of Andrew's relatives are in fact buried.

Mary Elizabeth Hess married John Henry Anderson in Stone Co., Ark., on 15 May 1879.

Mary Elizabeth was born 1862 in Ark, and died 1935 in Bell Co., Tx. Her death certificate shows that her father was John Hess (born Ark), and her obit says that a brother Tom Hess was living in Ark.

Mary E. and husband John Anderson in 1880 were living in Richwoods township, Stone Co.,
2 houses from:

Sarah Hess (63, born Tn)
Christiana Meadows? (32, Ark) - daughter
Martha Hess (22, Ark) - daughter
Elivia/Eliza? J. Jones (6, Ark) - granddaughter

It appears Mary was also the daughter of Sarah ___ and maybe John Hess, but I have not found the marriage for that couple, nor census for this John Hess.

Does anyone have info on any of these?

Note:
I've seen a Hess family website on Samuel and Solomon Hess, and their desc., and it seems likely that this Hess family is related to those, but have been unable to find specifics on this family.

Thanks,
Barbara

HOOD, BREWER, STEVENS, McGINNIS families

Seeking links between these families, particularly those buried in the Miser-Ward Cemetery in Stone County, AR. Wonder if Nellie Jane HOOD, possibly married to Ambros Dick BREWER, is sister to Dan and John HOOD. All are buried in Miser-Ward Cemetery (dates on gravestones unknown). Hunch that Dan HOOD's wife, Elizabeth, was a STEVENS, and that John HOOD's wife Sarah J., was a BREWER. A Rosannah A. "Rosie" STEVENS is buried there, as is Margaret (nee Brewer) SUTTERFIELD, among other BREWERS. Any info would be much appreciated!
