Lester Paul Coleman - St Francis County, Arkansas/Shelby Co., TN

I am searching for information on Lester Paul Coleman (and his family) born abt. 1931 possibly in Arkansas somewhere around the area of Saint Francis County, Arkansas. The info I have on him is pretty sketchy and not sure how much of it is correct but this is what I have
1. Was in the Army 7 years. (I'm assuming somewhere in the late 40's and early 50's)
2. Worked for a beer company at one time.
3. Last known job was a parking lot attendant - Park-Rite Baptist.
4. Lived in Memphis, TN during 1957 (probably more years than that but know for sure in 1957)
5. Had 3 sisters and 4 brothers (no names on siblings)
6. Quit school in 9th grade in Arkansas
7. Was married to Velma Reynolds from Saint Francis County, Arkansas and they both lived in Memphis, TN. They separated sometimes in 1957 or 1958. Velma passed away in 1969.

Any information on him or his family would be so appreciated.

I'm looking for a little help locating some family graves in St Francis Co. I have been looking for my GGgrandparents, John and Martha Stewart, for a while now and I was just told they are most likely buried on the family farm.

This is the best description I was able to get out of my 92 year old great aunt, remember, these are from 75 year old memories, and she is the only person still alive from down there...

The Farm was owned by Charlie Stewart, son of Martin Lucius Stewart. It was located on the road between Widener, where my G grandparents, Martin's brother George, lived, and Memphis. From Widener, you would cross the bridge at Burnt Cane Lake(within walking distance of bridge also) the road to Round Pond turned off to the left. The house was up on a hill maybe a half mile off of the road. There was also a country school house the kids went to right on the road, again within walking distance.

Anyone who knows the area or thinks they can identify this farm I would really appreciate the help. I plan on visiting the area this summer and need to do the locating and hopefully get permission to visit before that date if at all possible.

Thanks for you time!!
Ken Stewart

POW/MIA Korean War, St. Francis Co. GREEN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Palestine. St Francis County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: WILBA GREEN
Born: August 21, 1925. Caucasian
Date of loss: June 12, 1951. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Green County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am wondering where there was a "University" near Forrest City around 1890 or earlier. I have a relative who died at the University in 1890 and I am not sure what they were referring to. They also have a daughter who is missing from the family in 1850 and since I cannot find her anywhere in St Francis County I thought maybe it was a possiblity she was sent to school outside the county as well. Maybe Memphis area? Any idea what University this could be?
THANKS!
Yacona Cemetery Disaster

I recently visited there. What a shambles! There has been no upkeep to this cemetery lately. Many of the stones were knocked down and piled up against a tree. It was a disgrace. The few stones that were still standing looked as if they had been hit by a tractor or something, as the were corners broken off. The county should be ashamed to allow such a thing to occur.

I'm wondering where the Richlands Township was located in 1860? My Robert & Rebecca HOOD lived there in District 11 and the post office for that area was Cotton Plant. We believe that Robert died in 1860 and I am trying to find cemeteries near where they lived to start searching for his grave since the Genweb site has no info on St. Francis county at all.

Thank you!

I've never heard of this cemetery and I'm hoping that there may be other family members buried here. Does anyone know anything about it - it's location, history, etc.?

I am searching for any info on Ezra Casteel and his wife Lucinda (possibly maiden name Barnes) who came from TN to St. Francis county. He was born in 1818 and she was born in 1815. By 1847 they were in Arkansas and they are on the 1850 St. Francis county census. I can't find any census info on Ezra before or after 1850, so I am not sure who his parents were or which Tennessee line of Casteels he came from. Ezra and Lucinda had the following children that I know of: Joseph b. 1839 TN, William H. b. 1847 AR, Sarah F. b. 1848 AR, and John B. b. 1849 AR. There may have been others, but these are the ones on the 1850 census. If anyone has any info on Ezra & Lucinda please let me know!!! Thank you!

WILLIAMSON'S IN ST. FRANCIS CO., AR

I am trying to find when and where my great, great uncle, Thomas Henry Williamson, died and information on him and any of his relation.
He was born in 1869 in Hardin Co., TN and lived around Palestine, in St Francis Co., AR for most of his married life. His first wife's name was Martha "Mattie" Hooser. They had two sons, Albert D. and Boyd A. and two daughters, Martha and Pearl.
Boyd Williamson married a Nina Irene Wooten in 1922 in Goodwin Twp. They later moved to CA and both died there. I have that they had at least one daughter, but do not have her name.
Martha Williamson married Earnest Watson about 1925 in St. Francis Co. They had two daughters, Ernestine and Helen Watson.
Pearl "Pearlie" Williamson married Lester Riley, they had two children Herbert and Shirley.
After Mattie died, Thomas married her younger sister, Hester. He is supposed to have a daughter with her named Magdalena "Maggie" Williamson who married a George Embery. She was killed in a house fire in or around Palestine in St. Francis CO. in 1922. Her husband, was killed, I believe in a train wreck. They had two daughters, Rose Marie and Georgia Embery. Is there somewhere I can get an Obituary for any of them? I was told that he died Nov. of 1933 in St. Francis Co. but I am not sure of this. I am also trying to get a marriage record for Thomas and Hester Hooser. They married sometime after 1920 as Mattie is on the census for that year. I would appreciate any information on any of these people. Thanks
Charlotte Christensen
ly68@charter.net

Forrest City, May 1889, political trouble

I am trying to find out what happened in May of 1889, in Forrest City. According to my familys' oral history, they left Forrest City, and came to Kansas, after a family member was killed because of "political troubles."

I found an index to the Arkansas Gazette, with several entries that confirm this. Unfortunately, I currently have no source for transcripts or film of the Gazette for 1889, so all I have to go on is the headlines from the newspaper articles (there are a ton of them).

Evidently 3 county officials were killed in some sort of dispute over a school board election. The newspaper index states that the incident that led to the killings was started by my ancestor! He, himself, was shot and killed by a mob.

Can anyone help me out with any clues as to what might have happened? I'd also appreciate any sources that anyone might have for microfilm or transcripts of the Arkansas Gazette. I live in Missouri.

The 1860 census has Dandridge in Texas along with some of the children of George W, but it appears George may have died by 1860. Does anyone have any info on these people.
Looking for any information on James Reddick Webb born 7 September 1881 in Newcastle, St. Francis County, Arkansas was the son of Wade Webb of Edgecombe County.

James Reddick Webb and Mollie Nichols of St. Francis County, Arkansas were married 6 September 1898 in St. Francis. The marriage was performed by W. R. McLaren, JP, and is recorded on page 24, Book I, St. Francis, Arkansas. The license indicated that James was 18 years old in 1898.

In the 1900 Arkansas census it lists James & Molly and their son, James H., as residing in Johnson Township, St. Francis County, Arkansas. James is listed as a day laborer and a renter.

In the 1910 Arkansas census it lists James & Molly as owning and operating a farm in Johnson Township, St. Francis County, Arkansas. Their children are: James Hubert, Nora Lea, and Virgil. Also listed in the household is Johnson Watson, a 20-year-old white male boarder listed as a farmer.

James Reddick was the sheriff of St. Francis County, Arkansas. The husband of the woman he was having an affair with murdered him. He died 3 July 1912.

Jo

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
I am trying to find when and where my great great uncle, Thomas Henry Williamson, died. He lived around Palestine, in St Francis Co., AR for most of his married life. His first wife's name was Martha "Mattie" Hooser. They had two sons, Albert D. And Boyd A. and two daughters, Martha and Pearl. After Mattiedied, Thomas married her yopunger sister, Hester. Is there somewhere I can get an Obituary for him? I was told that he died Nov. of 1933 in St. Francis Co. but am not sure of this. I am also trying to get a marriage record for Thomas and Hester Hooser. They married sometime after 1920 as Mattie is on the census for that year. I would appreciate any help. Thanks
Charlotte Christensen
ly68@charter.net

Philips/Phillips

Howdy anyone, everyone . . .

I'm looking for anything on a family of Philips who appear on the 1850 census, L'Anguille twp.

The family consisted of a mother Mary Ann (b. abt. 1811), son James M (1833), son Newton J (1840), and daughter Mahala F(1842). There may be more, but the digitized census with Ancestry skips the next page. The census says that the children were born in "Mi" which I take for Mississippi, since that particular census take didn't record anyone having been born in "Ms", and it would be strange for noone in that twp. to have been born in Mississippi (a few miles away) and for many people to have been born in Michigan.

The family disappears in 1860, with a possible resurfacing in 1864 with the marriage of a Mahala Francis Phillips to Robert J. Thacker in Clark County, AR.

The family wasn't in the county for very long. Where they went is, at this point, only vague possibility.

Any information would be helpful.

Thank You!

Dave Leaton

Lemuel Johnson in St. Francis Co.

I am looking for information on Lemuel Johnson in St Francis Co AR - He appears to have settled there between 1828-1830 and was still enumerated there as late as 1870. In the latter census I believe he was listed as Samuel Johnson instead of Lemuel Johnson.

From 1850-1870 his wife is listed as a Mary A. - but it appears she was a 2nd wife. Probably married her in the 1840's.

I am trying to find out for sure what the first wife's name was. There is a Lemuel Johnson who married a Matilda Abbott in Madison County, AL 14 Apr 1824.

The 1830 Census shows
Lemuel Johnson 1 m under 5, 1 m 30-40, 1 f 20-30

1840 Census
Leml Johnson
1 m under 5, 3 m 5-10, 1 m 40-50, 1 f 20-30

1850 Census
Lemuel Johnson 52 SC
Mary 29 TN
Thomas 22 AL
Lemuel 17 AR
Joel 15 AR
Elizabeth J 8 AR
Sarah F 6 AR
James 4 AR
Melissa 2 AR
Sarah Ann Jones 10 AR
Jesse Jones 2 AR

I would think the children from Elizabeth downward could be Mary A's children - However the Jesse Jones age 2 would make that impossible if the Jones were Mary's children. - If anyone has marriage records for St Francis Co, would appreciate it is someone could check for a marriage record of Lemuel or Samuel to a Mary A. Jones from 1840 to 1850.

Anyone that knows about this family or can do look-ups, I would appreciate some help here. It would appear that this family was in St Francis County from it's beginning. I would think they would be well recorded within the county history and records.

Thank You
Joel H. Hutto
Houston Texas

PS the first wife may be recorded as Martha or Matilda. (At least I hope so!)
