Sparks Family

Has anyone done any research on a Sparks family who passed through Sharp County, Arkansas? They are there for the 1870 census, Minor Henry Sparks and Sarah Ann Anderson Sparks. Sarah was born in Arkansas about 1834 and died most likely in Sharp County Arkansas at about 1870. They had 6 children that I know of - Julina Clementine, David, John, Sarah, Henry and Robert. Minor married Amanda Jane Paget in 1871 and they had one child in Missouri and then 3 in Texas.

Francis Marion Lewis

My gg granfather was John Calvin Lewis I know this to be a fact because I have my Grandfather's Birth Certificate. His name was Alvah Clayburne Lewis, he was the twin to Archie Blue Lewis I have seen the Blue spelled two ways. John Calvin was born in Alabama in 1851 so I assume Francis Marion being his brother was too. Francis was born in 1849. His father's name was Francis Musgrove Lewis his mother Elizabeth Hurst. I am trying to track their Native American line if there is anyone who can help it would be greatly appreciated. I am also looking for the family of his brother Archie Blue Lewis twin born March 10th 1898.

his is my question to anyone out there, I have heard that there are alot of stories out there about our family being indian. I am beginning to think not. Although, here is the story I remember as a child, John and his brother were soldiers in Cherokee County that is now Alabama and one of them married into an Indian family. I am not sure which brother. I Want to search rumors and family gossip. If you have any information about Alvah Lewis or John Calvin please email me at MAURIEC1@AOL.
I have the following information from my Grandmother's Social Security application - and I'm looking for any information regarding her or her family.

Virgie Mae Covington, born 20 Dec 1902 in Maxwell, Sharp County Arkansas. (I realize she might have meant Maxville)
She lists her father's name as Will Covington and her mother's name as Ida Bell Nipps.

We were always told that she had a fairly substantial percentage of Cherokee ancestry. And I believe she possibly had a sister named Myrtle.

She married Robert Franklin Bates abt 1917 - he was born in 1893 near Franklin, Izard County, Arkansas and was the son of Zachariah Bates and Bettie (Elizabeth) Drake.

Virgie Mae and Robert Bates moved to Muskogee Oklahoma about the time they were married. They appear together in the 1920 Muskogee Census. They could have actually been married in any of the above locations - I do not have any record of their marriage yet.

They moved back to Arkansas about 1927 and were living in Myron, Jefferson Township, Izard County for the 1930 Census.

In 1942 they were living near Bald Knob in White County. In 1947 they were living near Hoxie in Lawrence County.

By abt 1950 they were living in Rockford Illinois, where Robert died in 1952. He is buried in Violet Hill Cemetery in Izard County.

Virgie Mae lived in Rockford until her death in March of 1974.

Their children who are no longer living were:

Henry Thomas b.1920 - d.unknown
Jerry Robert b.1922 - d.1957
Geraldine b.1928 - d.2006
Betty Jo (I don't have her dates)
William Z b.1926 - d.1990

Several of their children are still living - I've omitted their names.

I'd be glad to share any and all other information I have with anyone else interested in researching the Ancestors of Virgie Mae Covington.

Greg

I recently found a record of the first Poor Farm in Sharp County and thought it would be of interest for researchers. The Court book is located at the Sharp County Courthouse in Ash Flat. This can be used to place an ancestor in time. I hope it is not too many surnames for the box.

County Court Book I
October 1887 p 498
In the Matter of Purchasing
a Poor Farm and Making an
Appropriation therefore.
Now on this day it was ordered considered and adjudged by the court that the sum of four hundred dollars be and the same is hereby appropriated for the purpose of making a payment on a poor farm for the maintenance of the paupers of Sharp County which purchase is hereby ordered and directed in accordance with the provisions of law in such cases made and provided, said farm not to exceed in price the sum of Twelve hundred dollars to be paid for in three equal installments, the first of which shall be paid when said purchase is made and the remaining two installments in one and two years in equal payments.
And on motion it was also ordered that the sum of four hundred dollars be and the same is herby appropriated for the purpose of keeping the paupers of said county until suitable arrangements shall have been made for taking care of them in the poor farm of the county.
And the names of those voting in the affirmative on each of said appropriations are; Justices Barnett of North, Barnett of Cave, Carpenter, Conyers, Colliers, Coats, Dark, Dailey, Erwin, Flanagan, Gay, Halliburton, Holt, Jones, Lackey, Mobley, Paden, Rogers, Ray, Ring, Richie, Sheet, Shanks of Cave, Shanks of Sullivan, Spotts, Spurlock and Steele, except on the first appropriation Justice Flanagan voted in the negative.
ER

LOWE, William D 1855-1920+ TN GA AR

Who are the parents of William D Lowe?

On the 1860 census of Dade County, Georgia, William Lowe age 4, Caroline Lowe, age 8 and Mary Lowe age 6 were living in the household of Basil Smith and his 2nd wife Caroline. Basil and Caroline were married before 1850 so these are not her children. Basil died by 1870 and William Lowe was living with Caroline Smith on the census. The Lowe children were not mentioned in Basil's will.

On the 1880 census of Sharp County, Arkansas, William Lowe is living in the household of William J Ellis and his wife, Judah Smith Ellis, granddaghter of Basil Smith. There is a marriage record for William Lowe and Sarah Sherley in Sharp County in 1881 however, I believe she is Sarah Shelley. They are listed on the 1900 census in Sharp County with Sarah born Feb 1866 in Georgia with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Alabama. Sarah Shelley was born in 1866 in Georgia. Her father, Thomas Shelley was born in Tennessee and her mother, Louise Emiline Ellis, sister to William J. Ellis above, was born in Alabama. William Lowe and wife Sarah named their eldest son Thomas. In 1900 they are living in adjoining households to Silas Ellis, another sibling of William J Ellis, John Pendergrass and his wife, Nancy Shelley; John Godwin, widower of Mary Ellis daughter of another Ellis sibling and near Walter Ellis son of William J Ellis. In 1910 William Lowe was in Izard County but back in Sharp County in 1920.

Who was William Lowe and what is his relationship to these Smith and Ellis families?

I am trying to find Jennie Sharp Asbury born abt 1877 in Tenn Or Texas. On her death certificate it shows Father was John Asbury and mother unknown. The story that has been passed down for years was that Sharp was her mother's family name and she died at an early age, so she was raised by an Uncle...Uncle Bernie or John Asbury could have been an Uncle and really not her father. We also found something in the Pruitt family history referring to Jennie Sharp Asbury as Geneva Sharp Ashbury.

She died in Magnum, Greer Co, Oklahoma in 1944.

We cannot locate her prior to her marriage to Robert Allen Pruitt in 1895 and appeared on the 1900 census in Chickasaw Indian Terriorty. We do not know for sure if Jennie Sharp Asbury was her given name. She would'nt talk about her past as she was suppose to be of Indian Heritage.

I found a Liriona Asbury 20 years old on an 1880 census in Caldwell Texas showing this Liriona Asbury as being widowed with two children Lilly and Davia N Asubry but can't locate them after the 1880 census...they were living with a George W Roberts, Vina Roberts and family there seems to be a connection with the Roberts and Sharp, based on Family Tree index in Roots Web.

Is there a Female Sharp that has not been located that might possibly have been Jennie's mother. Also the Name Geneva or Jeneva seems to be prevalent as she named a daughter Rhonda Geneva Pruitt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Eldona Rury

I believe Lena was born in either Kentucky or Illinois. I don't know where Jasper was born, but at some point they met, married, and settled in Hardy. They also had a son, Steve (born about 1909). Lena married twice more after Jasper and had another daughter, Plonny Young.

George Gawf/Goff & Jesse Caton Goff, Sharp Co AR

A George W. Gawf is listed as a head of household in the 1880 US census of Sharp Co AR (page 111B), age 62 and born in TN. Other Gawf surnames shown in this household are Polly (61 TN) and George W. (20 AR).

I'm trying to find if there is a Gawf/Goff family connection between this George W. Gawf and other Goffs who lived in Sharp Co. AR during this same period, including Jesse Caton Goff. I'm particularly interested in learning the identity of the parents of George W. Gawf/Goff to see if I can make a connection with my Goff ancestors who lived in Warren Co TN at the time of George W.'s birth in TN. My 3G-grandfather, William B. Goff, lived in Warren Co TN from about 1820 until his death about 1850. Jesse Caton Goff is a grandson of William B. Goff.

In the 1880 census record of Sharp Co AR for Jesse Caton Goff (page 103A), Jesse is listed as being age 31, born in TN and the head of the household consisting of wife Bettie (23 AR), son John H. (2 AR) and daughter Mary J. (1 AR); brother Sampson (19 AR); and sisters Maranda (32 TN) and Mary E. (20 AR).

I would appreciate any leads or information about either of these Gawf/Goff families.

John Reid
P.O. Box 655
Republic, MO 65738

I thought that my Great Great Great Grandfather's name was Stephen R. Williford, until just recently finding a census record that shows his name as Stephen Smith. In the 1870 census he was a 9 year old Stephen Smith living with a Vinia Willaford. Here is the information I have on Stephen.

**************************
Name: Stephen WILLIFORD
Given Name: Stephen
Surname: Williford
Sex: M
Birth: Abt 1862 in Arkansas

Census: 1870 Census 26 Aug 1870 Jackson Township, Sharp County, Arkansas
Note:
Willaford Vinia 35 Keeping house Arkansas
Elizabeth 12 Home Arkansas
Isiah 10 Arkansas
James 8 Arkansas
Nancy 6 Arkansas
Louisa 3 Arkansas
Smith, Stephen 9 Arkansas

Census: 1880 Census Jun 1880 Jackson Township, Sharp County, Arkansas
Note:
Williford William 60 Head Farmer Arkansas Missouri Missouri
Adeline 60 Wife Tennessee ? ?
King, Jessie 17 Laborer Tennessee ? ?
Williford, Steve 18 Laborer Arkansas Arkansas Arkansas Blind
Nancy 15 Sister Arkansas Arkansas Arkansas
Viny 40 Mother Arkansas Arkansas Arkansas

Census: 1900 Census 6 Jun 1900 Jackson Township, Sharp County, Arkansas
Note:
Williford, Steve R.

Would someone help me with an actual copy of 1900 Lave Creek Twn. Sharp County, census lookup? I have the census sheet No. 4 of what seems to be pg. 84. This shows Joseph G. Royal, wife Sonija J., Cora A. and Otto, living at #50. My request is for the previous page that would show who lived at #49 and #48. It is my belief that other Royal names may be there.
I am grateful for your time and appreciate any help you can give me. ER

Holt - Mrs. Enoch Holt or wife of Enoch Holt? She died December 28, 1910 in Sharp County, Arkansas. She was Martha Royal before her second marriage to Enoch Holt. There is no mention of her in the 1911 abstract. Thanks for any help on this and I hope that I might return a favor. ER

I am currently working on my father's lines. He was the late Calvin Lee Murphy of Williford, born "Banks Community", Hardy, Sharp, Arkansas 12-31-25, died Nov. 24, 1998 interred at Baker Cemetery in Wirth.

My dad's dad was William Robert (Bob) Murphy and his mother was Missouri Belle (Bell) Prewitt Murphy.

Both Bob and Bell are interred in McCullough Cemetery, also near Wirth along Martin's Creek.

My father's syblings included:

Otis Baldridge, half brother, son of Missouri and Jasper Baldridge.

James Archibald (Archie/Arch) Murphy
William Rodney (Rode) Murphy
John Thomas Murphy
Missouri "Thelma" Murphy (Ellis)
Luther Shelby Murphy
Velma Florence Murphy (Boling)

Please feel free to email any information you have to me.

Also, I am looking to support a long family claim that Millie Caroline Hutchinson Prewitt, wife of John Wesley Prewith and mother of Missouri Belle Prewitt was either "full blood" Cherokee or Apache. She was, allegedly, adopted by the Hutchinson family as a part of the Fed'l Gov't's efforts to force the Indian nations to assimilate into the "white population".

Again, any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Calvin Ray Murphy, II
Monrovia, California

cmurphy@altrionet.com
Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
My ggf was John W. Thomas. He married Susan C. Roberts, d/o William A. Roberts and Hannah Johnson, in 1888, in Sharp Co. One of William & Susie's children was Nettie Thomas, who married John Wesley Boothe of Ash Flat. My aunts tell me that their mother, Nettie Thomas Boothe, was related to the Fowlers. In the 1900 Census for Sharp County, a Thomas Fowler was living in the home of John W. Thomas, in Davidson Township. The aunts were not sure if the connection was with the Roberts' side or the Thomas' side. Can anyone help?

Ron

Ron Estes

He had married a P......

I am looking for information about Lewis Metcalf and Francis M Metcalf. They were in the 1880 census in White River Township. My aunts records show that she was born in Oil Trough. Her mother died shortly after she was born and her father was hung in either Lawrence or Randolph county. I would like to know if there are any records available about this event. I have been unable to find and marriage or burial records for either one of them.

Hello,
I am hoping that someone could tell me about a family of Berrys that were in the Sharp Co., Piney Fork and Richwood Twp census of Ark. in 1870. It is Joseph Berry 59 blacksmith of Tenn and wife Sophia 42 of Tenn. There children were
David 19 from Mo
William 14 of Mo.
Sophie 11 of Mo
Easter 9 of Ar.
Joseph 5 Ark
Elizabeth 1 Ark.

Many of our family members have looked for over 25 years to find a William Berry. I wonder if anyone could speak of this William Berry listed here and who he eventually married. Our William Berry used a middle name of "Saker". I'm hoping by some off-chance that this might be him.
Thanks, Barbara from Oklahoma

According to Roller-Crouch Funeral Home records in Batesville, AR, Calvin Green is listed as the father of James Henry Green. Jame's mother is not listed. I find James and his sister, Victory, living with their cousin in the 1900 Independence Co AR census.

1900 Independence County AR census, Black River township, North part, dist 33, June 16, pg 13
112/113 Tarry, James, June 1857, 42, MO/TN/TN
Nancy C, Dec 1867, 32, md 11 years, AR/AR/MO
Ara B
Joseph R
Cecil C
Cora F
Dora
Green, James H, May 1883, 17, AR/TN/AR (cousin to head of household)
Victory, June 1885, 14, AR/TN/AR (cousin to head of household)

According to James Henry Green's WWI draft registration card, his birth is 6 March 1880.

James Henry Green married Minnie Hennessee in Sharp County Arkansas 1902/1904. Minnie was b. 9 May 1879/1882.
Their children are:
Margie b. 1905
Mabel (Maybelle) b.1907
Didmia (Deam) b. 1908
John J "Buster" b. The Batesville Guard Newspaper published an article "A Glance at days gone by" March 16-22, 1991, page 12. This article was sent to my grandmother, Bertha Elizabeth (Green) Pinkston. James Green and Bill Green (a full-blooded Chickasaw Indian) look like each other a lot. They are of some relation or my grandmother would not have saved the article.
Can somebody please help me?
