I am looking for information on the family of Locke Williams who died in the Fort Smith area in 1988. I would like to find an obituary which hopefully will allow me to connect with other family members. Locke was the son of Doc and Mary (Mittie) Williams of Crawford County, Arkansas.

There was a lot of gossip at my house too. Only thing is they were all my family.

That is the first time I have ever heard that he beat Virginia.

My mother told several stories about his terrible temper though. Once he evidently beat up a photographer at a boxing match because the photographer stood in front of him.

Also, my aunt told a story that he had used a tire iron on a union representative and left him bleeding on the side of the road.

There was much gossip about this murder when I was a child. My father knew the family very well.
What I heard him say at the time: " Paul beat his wife and it did not matter who killed him, he should have been killed". My father believed the step son to be guilty.

A great site to view the listings of the old communities and post offices:

www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arsebast

Ben Franklin Smith died Dec. 19, 1963 in Sebastian County, Arkansas

I am searching for any descendants of Ben Franklin and Myrtle Roper Smith. Ben Franklin Smith died December 19, 1963 in Fort Smith, Arkansas and is buried at Old Union Cemetery in Sebastian County. His obituary listed survivors: sons Dewitt, Ben W. of Lawton Oklahoma, Billy R. and Lawrence of Fort Smith, Arkansas, three daughters, Mrs. Claude Bailey of Oklahoma, Mrs. Clifford Brussard and Mrs. Bruce Staton of Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The parents of Ben Franklin Smith were Laura Elizabeth(Lizzie) Mooneyham and George Thomas Smith. According to family history, Laura Elizabeth Mooneyham Smith disappeared and was never heard from again. I would like to know what happened to Lizzie. After the disappearance of "Lizzie" Mooneyham Smith, her son Ben Franklin Smith lived part of the time with his uncle Jim Mooneyham and aunt Sadie Mooneyham. Ben resided in Fort Smith Arkansas about 25 years and was a retired farmer.

I would like to communicate with anyone from the Smith family to learn about the disappearance of Laura Elizabeth "Lizzie" Mooneyham Smith.

Thank you. He is now gone. One of these days I would like to trace my dad's family tree. As far I as I know right now...The Smotts came from Chicago and had changed their names from Alman to Smotts....they were leaving the mofia. So when you said black sheep...I found that kind of funny and ironic. God Bless.
*******this is a message from a cousin in texas maybe you can use this. however i have found that all smotts are family because of the break from the mob

I am in the metroplex, Garland area. Tell me more about your side of the family! I excited to hear about earlier times. If we can get together sometime I would want to include my older sisters because they probably had more contact with the cousins, aunts and uncles. Dawn

My cousin Marie Gertrude Pinkston, age 14, was an inmate at Rosalie Tilles Orphan Home, according to the 1930 census. I've wondered what became of her. Is there any information to be had besides just age and name?

Her parents were both living well into the 1950s, so she wasn't really an orphan. And she had 3 siblings, Leon, Edna, and Carl, who are not listed there.

I am unsure if we are looking for the same person, but the similarities are too close for me to not ask.
My grandfather's name was SAM DARREL HENSON. (I have also been told it was DARREL SAM HENSON.) Born in the mid 1930's in Greenwood, Arkansas. His father's name was BARNEY HENSON. Mother's name was HAZEL. Sam Darrel Henson was married to a MARIE (which may be the MARY you mention.) He served as a Green Beret in the army. He did have one brother, but I do not know his name. Sam Henson lived in Washington up until his death sometime in the 1990's. Like I said....there are too many similarities to ignore.
If you have any more information that can confirm or rule anything out as the same person, I would love to know.

F M Beshears' name is shown as a witness on Fannie Kelsey's death certificate. Perhaps we're related? I am searching for info on the Beshears. 1baggott

I had trouble reading the 1900 census also. Give this a try, it worked for me. Try looking at the one at familysearch.org, tab records search, records search pilot. I search for a name on the same page that was readable to get the correct page. Hope it works for you !!

I hope y'all are still out there! I am a direct descendant of Richard Henry Winter, called by one of his daughters, a "Cherokee Outlaw." He was hated by his step-children; and his daughters would never say a word about him, or his wife Mattie. They would only get mad and say "You don't want to know about that."

Several convictions of an RH Winter, and Lewis Winter, in the criminal records from Ft. Smith, between the years 1880 and 1905. Larceny, illegal liquor sales, disorderly conduct.

Anyway - our family is coming together, and it seems like I am coming across a new distant relative from the Winter side, almost daily now. Not to worry - none of us take after R H, unless he had a good side!

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Gordon

I'll be eager to see what you've got. I found several cases where the children of George and Cyntha are all listed, except for R H. But I think that's because he was caught in an age where names were listed in 1850, and by 1860 they still did not list names in the census, or he had already left. He shows up in the 1870, living in Alabama, working as a farm hand (sorry, can't remember the county, but it's in the northwest, just to the east of Colbert.

My strongest evidence is the 1880 Census, where he lives next door to Lewis Winter, who has a daughter named Cyntha. I have also found the names of Lewis and R H or Dick Winter listed in the criminal records of the period.

And I have spoken to at least one descendant of Lewis, that stated that they knew there was a brother, named Richard Henry.

So. I'm a little apprehensive that your records may not show R H, but I hope they do, of course!

I do know there was a plantation somewhere on the Mississippi/Alabama line, owned by a Richard Henry Winter.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Gordon
Thanks. This is pretty cool.

Interesting about some of the "facts". One can see the seed of truth spread throughout the rest of the "information".

I've never heard of her called Nina. It's usually Narcissa Theresa (or some variant). She was alleged born on a riverboat enroute from Tennessee to Arkansas. Her father was Joseph Smedley, a Baptist Missionary from Philadeplhia who worked among the Indians and around Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Her husband is Columbus Evan (C.E.) Goddard.

Flo, I hope you get this message. I found William R. Turner in the US Federal Census Mortality Schedule for 1860. He died in Crawford Co AR Feb. 1860 of winter fever. His birth state is listed as SC.

His widow Julia Whitlock Turner is listed in the 1860 US census in Crawford Co--look for July Turner. Her youngest daughter is listed with her.

I would like to know where William Turner and Julia Whitlock Turner are buried--my guess is in Crawford County. Can anyone help? Will post a separate query, too.

I have an obituary for their daughter Julia Ann Parlee Turner Hamm, which I will post on the Turner message board. She lived to be 90 years old.
