I too believe your Eli James Furr was from the Cabarrus County, North Carolina Furrs; however, I have not been able to make a connection with any of the North Carolina Furrs. I did find an Eli J. Furr as having a criminal record in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1890(see National Archives(http://www.nara.gov/nara/nail/searchnail.html). Search for Furr for a list of cases.
