Searcy Co. AR - Wayne Co. TN Connections

In doing research of my Middleton and related families in Searcy County and the surrounding area, I have noted what seems to me an unusually high number of families who migrated, during the time period 1850 to 1860, from Wayne County, Tennessee to Searcy County and the nearby surrounding counties. Has anyone else observed this and does anyone know what some of the reasons are that it occurred? I'd appreciate your comments.

My great grandmother was Sarah Frances Davis, married to Robert Alexander "Elic" Harris. My brick wall is finding her parents. I am fairly certain her parents names were Mac Davis and Sarah Treece or VanTreece. I was also told that she was disowned when she married. Sarah had one full brother named Al Davis and several half brother and sisters that lived around Harrison and/or Lead Hill.

Sarah and Robert "Elic" married in 1912 at Lead Hill, AR and moved to Leslie shortly after that. They raised their children and lived in the Leslie/Marshall area the rest of their lives.

If any one has any info I'd greatly appreciate it.

[This was from a very crumbly and stinky volume at the courthouse. But here goes:]

p. 377-8
September Term 7th Day, September 19th 1896
Martha J. Blair
vs.
J. T.
Bolen's in Searcy Co., Arkansas

I am seeking any information on the Bolen's buried in the Dongola Cemetery in Searcy County Arkansas. My G-G grandmother is Amanda "Mandy" Jane Bolen born: December 12, 1883 in the area of Snowball, Arkansas. She married James Prender "Jim" Elliott on September 25, 1898 and died on July 14, 1957. Her and Jim are buried in the Dongola Cemetery. I have 4 siblings listed for Mandy: Abe Bolen, Robert Bolen, Elmer 'half' Bolen, and Sadie Bolen. There is several Bolen's buried in the Dongola Cemetery that I believe are kin to Mandy. I suspect Mandy's father to be Lewis Bolen Sr., buried at Dongola Cemetery, but I'm not for sure.
Thanks - Scott

EDWARDS/Possible Epidemic in 1909

My husband' great uncle Clarence Edwards and his wife, Lucy Barnard Edwards were married in Indiana in 1903. By the time of their deaths in late October of 1909, they were living in Leslie, Searcy County, Arkansas. He died first, on or about October 31, 1909, and she died shortly thereafter. They had two children, Ira David and Clarence. I have two questions:

Why were they in Arkansas? He had been a conductor for the interuban cars between Muncie and Hartford City, Indiana, and her family was from Massachusetts and were in the glass making industry. Was there a glass making industry in the area at that time?

Was there an epidemic of some kind in the area in late October, 1909? The newspaper doesn't give any details but for both of them to die it must have been something like an
epidemic.

His body was returned to Indiana for burial. Her's was not as far as I know. I would like to know where she is buried also. Son Ira David was renamed Kenneth David and adopted by Clarence's sister and her husband. Son Clarence was raised by another of his sister's, but kept the name Edwards and appears to end up in Tennessee.

Any help will Be appreciated.

Christine

"Mattie" Blasingame b.1857(Blasingame was her maiden, but she was previously married to a Brown Holt).

Franklin "Frank" and Mattie's son Ollie, claimed (in Dr. Doak Blassingame's books)that Franklin Marion Blassingame's brothers were Jim and John, and that their father possibly died in Searcy co as well. Jim (or James) and John were such common family names that I'm having a hard time tracking any parents, or other siblings.

Thank-you in advance for any help. I hope that someone out there has some info or has heard of something.....

I would also like to find out where they were buried, etc.)
She was born in Izard Co., Arkansas abt. 1839.

Do you have anything on this couple. I know they lived in Webster Co. Missouri. However, their first child Mary was born in Arkansas, son Josiah L. was born in Missouri.. Don't know where Josiah and Mary were buried.
Can you help? Thanks anyway!

Peggy McNair Batterton

I'm trying to find out who Nathaniel married all I know is her frist name from Census is Elizabeth (Elisabeth). Nathan also had a sister name Nancy who married a Coots. I have found their marriages. Can anyone look in the Searcy area for me. I would be greatful! Does anyone know Where they might be buried at, as they lived in the Big Flat area. They were listed in the Searcy, and the Baxter. So I take it that Big Flat lays in both counties. If anyone could help that would be great. I can return in the Western Ky area to look up stuff for someone if needed. Nathan born abt 1835-1837.

My Darling Searcy County,
You have provided sustenance by giving food and livelihood for my family.
They drank of your rivers, streams and creeks and from the ground itself through wells they dug in your earth.
By adding some hard work and seeds, from that earth came the crops that fed their families, friends and neighbors.
Some were even sold at market.
By adding some more hard work, they raised livestock with what you provided.
They have worked and played in the places, although changed by time, that still remain.
They laughed, they danced, they sang, they cried for joy and for sorrow.
They have fought to defend you and the rest of this great country and we have remained free.
They welcomed new members to their families and sadly watched as others left.
When they left by passing from this world, your sweet earth gave them their final resting place.
Thank you Searcy for all you have given my family. You have been a good mother to us all.

20 Aug 2007
Jeanne
Mary Bell Popejoy dau of William David and Mahala McCloud

I am searching for the identity of Mary Bell's mother and wife of William David.Mary Bell was born 8/18/1873 in possibly Searcy CO ARK. She had two brothers:William B. born 7/2/1869 in MO. and Samuel C. born 6/8/1870 MO. Father William David was born 5/8/1842 in Dallas Cty, MO and died 3/1/1873. He was the son of John Edward Popejoy and Mahala McCloud.

Family tradition has it that she was a Cash. This is somewhat supported by the fact that Samuel C. Popejoy is living with James M. Cash in Searcy CO Ark in the 1880 census.

She married Thomas Rueben Rogers son of Dr. JohnW. Rogers of Searcy Cty before 1891 when their son Plummer was born.

Please help solve this family mystery and thanks.

Tom Treat
Looking for anyone who is a family connection to George (Frederick) Daniel. Last record I have of him is 1930 Census in Richland, Searcy, AR with a second wife of one year named Mary E and 1st marriage children Floyd, Claude, and Mary. Apparently Mary has been married once before as they have a child listed at being 2 1/2 and name Hulen Daniel (mistake when writing the last name perhaps, or possibly "adopted" upon marriage?). I do know that Floyd married (he shows up here as married 2 years-his wife drowned) and had a daughter named Shirley (quite a story in itself). If you have heard of any of these names, or might have a cemetery book of Searcy county with these names in it, please contact me. George is my grandfathers half brother (same father, George's 1st wife died, he remarried a little later)

Fowler, Riley, Bowman - St. Joe

On 14 May 1911, Jefferson Alvis Fowler, son of Melvin & Elizabeth Ellen (Wells) Fowler married Dora Riley in St. Joe, Arkansas. They had a daughter, Erma Adalaide Fowler in 1912, and Dora died in December 1914. According to information provided over 25 years ago by a Fowler relative, Dora was born in Newton County, Arkansas in 1893. However, no Dora Riley born about 1892 - 1894 in Arkansas has been found listed in a 1900 census.

Living near the Fowler family in 1910 is an F. W. or Joseph William Bowman born c1873 in Wyoming. With his family are cousins, Elsie Riley born 1892 in Wyoming and Martha Riley born 1896 in Illinois.

I have verified that Elsie and Martha are daughters of John H. Riley born January 1847 in New York to parents both born in Ireland and Elizabeth Bowman, born in 1859 Galena, James Township, Stone County, Missouri to John C. & Elizabeth (Owens) Bowman. The Bowman family is in Taney County, Missori in 1850; Stone County, Missouri in 1860 and 1870; and Sweetwater County, Wyoming in 1880. John H. & Elizabeth (Bowman) Riley are in Sweetwater County, Wyoming in 1880 and Ward Three of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in 1900. In addition to Elsie and Martha, John and Elizabeth have a daughter Jenny born 1885, a son Francis born 1890, and a daughter Mary born 1893. I don't know where anyone other than Elsie and Martha of this family is in 1910, unless a Frank Riley born in a boarding house in Ward Three of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in 1910 is the brother Francis. A Dora Riley born 1894 in Arkansas is in Mammoth Springs, Arkansas listed as a servant.

My questions are:

1) Are any of these girls - John H. & Elizabeth (Bowman) Riley's daughters, Elsie born 1892, Mary born 1893 or Martha born 1896 or the Dora Riley born 1894 and living in Mammoth Springs, Arkansas in 1910 the Dora Riley who married Jeff Fowler?

2) Are there any tombstones or obituaries which might give a lead as to whether Dora was a nickname or a middle name?

3) Does any Riley or Bowman researcher recognize whether one of these girls was really "Dora" or if I'm just making too much of the fact that they were neighbors and of the right age?

Thanks.

Does anyone know where the George Washington Manuel family was living in 1910? I've found them in 1870 and 1880 living Bear Creek, Searcy County and 1900 living in Big Creek. Can't find hide nor hair of the family in 1910 but they turn up in 1920 in Stonewall, Pontotoc Co., Oklahoma. Have read about 3/4 of the 1910 Searcy County census with no luck - same goes for Pontotoc County, OK. Did they get beamed back up to the Mothership in 1910 or maybe entered the Witness Protection Program? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

You can reach me directly at panhandlekid@yahoo.com or beandipz@yahoo.com.

Thank you!!!

Sheryl H.
OK

I am researching my family line from Searcy County, AR. William Holmes born about 1823 in Tennessee, married Elizabeth. They are listed in the 1850 census, along with his brothers and parents. William Holmes had a daughter, Mary, who was born about 1850. She married Jesse Calvin (Calloway) Hill sometime around 1867. Is anyone else researching this line? Other siblings to William are: Benjamin, Jacob, Abram, George W., Elizabeth Ann, Welcome, Absolom, and Melina. I know most, if not all, of these siblings were in Searcy Co. in 1850 as well. I've just begun researching this line and would love any input I can get from other Holmes researchers.
