Tomlinson, Scott Co AR in 1870 ???

The online Ancestry com census index does list Tomlinson as a separate locality. Below are the localities they do list:
Mountain / Boles PO
Tumbleston / Black Jack PO
Black Fork / Waldron PO
Blansett / Waldron PO
Lafayette / Waldron PO
Brawley / Waldron PO
Lafave / Nebraska PO
Washburn / Chismville
Sugar Creek /Reveille PO
Boone / Booneville PO
Hickman / Waldron PO
Hunt / Olio PO
Park / Waldron PO
Reveille

Although the census taker actually wrote "Tumnleston" on each census page, is it possible this was actually Tomlinson?

I am searching for the Thomas L (T L) POWERS family who lived in Tomlinson in 1860 but I can't figure out how he was mistyped on the AC census index. SO, I want to page through every census sheet for 1870 Tomlinson but I need to know how else it could have been listed ???

According to their children's births 1880 Yell County, they had to have been in AR in 1870.

My sincere thanks for any information you may share,
Kathye

I am working on my aunts family and have not been able to find the Scott Co., AR Census for 1910 and 1920 online. Her grandparents are listed on the index of both Nathan Jackson Butts sometimes Nathan J. or N.J.

Nathan Jackson Butts, wife Polly (Sellers), (known children at this time) Susie A., James Thomas, Lillie on the 1910 Census.

Nathan died 1923 and buried at Blackfork Cem. Susie married James V. Tucker and James Thomas both in Carter Co., OK by 1915. Lillie died 1912 also Blackfork Cem. Polly came to Carter Co. also sometime after Nathan's death.

Can anyone help with this?

I do know relatives of my Scott County McClain line were in LeFlore County, OK in the 1900's.

I'm specifically trying to find the family of Elizabeth McClain who married an Essman.
My wife, Virginia Napier Ladda is a direct decendent of David and Emilene Sneed Starr. We have some info about this family.
What do you specifically want to know and how are you decended from David and Emilene. Do you have any idea where they might have been married? We suspect it was either in Mo, Ill, or possibly Ohio, where David was born ca 1816. If you answer this email and I don't respond, send an email to my address,
fredladda@hotmail.com Waiting to hear from you.

I am researching the Joel E. Denton (b. VA @1796) family: Lawrence County, AL November 1850 census reads:
Denton, Joel, 64, VA
Mary J. 25, AL
Wiley M., 18, AL
John, 14, AL
Two houses down from them are:
Denton, Robert P. 25, AL
Bythenia, 25, TN
Mary F. 4, AL
Ann E. 1, AL
Bythenia J. (no age given) AL

Brawley Township,(postoffice Sugarloaf)Sebastian County, Arkansas June 11, 1860 federal census reads:
Denton, Joel E. 74, VA
R. P., 35, AL
Perthenia, 35, TN
Mary, 30, AL
Jane, 17, AL
Mary Frances, 13, AL
Ann E., 10, AL
Two houses down are:
Denton, W. W., 45, TN
Eliza, 47, TN
W. H. 18, AL
Madora E., 15, AL
Eliza A, 12, AL
James A, 9, AL
Thomas W, 7, AL

The Joel and W.W. families also apparently are in Scott County in 1860 according to the Scott County GenWeb site.
I am particularly interested in John on the AL census, but missing on the AR census. Does anyone have information concerning this family? The John I am trying to connect to is affiliated with Davison, Keith, Bunch, Cheek and others.
POW/MIA Korean War, Scott Co. LEMARR

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Scott County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: LLOYD OTIS LEMARR
Born: December 7, 1926
Date of loss: October 3, 1951. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Scott County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Hi I am not sure if I have any information at all for you. But maybe you can make a connection for me? Here is what little information I have about the Starr family.

My Mother was a Taylor.
Daughter of Ira & Margaret Taylor.
Ira was the son of Jess & Mary Elizabeth Taylor
Mary was the daughter of James Amos & Mary Starr

Mary Starr (the one married to James) had the maiden name of Yandell.

They were all from or around Scott County Arkansas, is this any connection to you? If so I have information on her children and so on. But nothing much on her except

She was born about 1883 she was married to Jess Taylor May 29, 1898 in Logan County Arkansas

They had 13 Children, Last one was born I believe around 1921, but I am told those dates are not correct and she died around 1917. I don't recall my Granpa ever saying Jess remarried.

At any rate, if I can help you. I'd be happy to. Or if you could make that connection, I'd be pleased as pie!

Isaac Hill who mar. Mary Reed - ca 1842
I am trying to locate Hill and Reed cousins who resided in Scott County, AR. According to two Death Certificates in TX, John W. Hill was married to Mary Ann Reed or Mary E. Reed (born 1822 in AL). John W. Hill was also known as Isaac Hill while living in Arkansas. Isaac and Mary Hill were living in Scott County, AR (Hickman Twp) in the 1850 census. Isaac's father, John Hill may have married in 1836 in Pope County, AR. Isaac Hill and Mary Reed were married around 1842 in Arkansas (possibly Scott or Pope County, AR). There are several Reed families in the 1850 census in Hickman Twp, Scott County, AR that may be relatives to Mary Reed. I have around 1,000 descendant of this Hill Family at my web site: http://www.rcasey.net (select Acrobat Versions, Brooks Family History, go to back of the book where the allied line Hill Family History is covered. Here is the current sketch on Mary (Reed) Hill:

JOHN W. HILL (aka Isaac Hill) (12) is the oldest proven Hill ancestor of the authors. John was born around 1822. Most census records indicate that John was born in Illinois but others indicated Arkansas and South Carolina. It is believed that John W. Hill changed his name from Isaac Hill to John W. Hill when he moved from Arkansas to Texas. Alta (Crapps) Leath gives the following account of John Hill’s change of name: my “older half brother (John W. Hill) had a problem with the law and, though he was innocent, he felt it best to leave the area. He moved with his family and his half brother, Eli Hill, and his half sister, Margaret Elizabeth Hill to Texas and changed his name to John W. Hill.” This name change is supported by census records in Arkansas and Texas. According to Certificate of Death of Mrs. Maggie Massey, John Hill married Mary Ann Reed.

According to Certificate of Death of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Moore, John Hill married Mary E. Reed. Mary was born around 1822 in Alabama. In 1850, “Isaac” and Mary Hill were living in Scott County, Arkansas (federal census). In the 1850 Agricultural Census, Scott County, Arkansas lists: “Isaac Hill, 15 acres of improved land valued at $250.00 amd $5.00 worth of farming implements. He owned three horses, five milch cows, four other cattle and forty swine valued at $140.00. His farm had produced 200 bushels of Indian corn, 20 bushels of sweet pototoes and 20 pounds of butter valued at $15.00. He had slaughtered livestock valued at $20.00.

According his Confederate pension papers of John W. Hill’s younger half-brother, Eli Hill moved to San Marcos, Texas in 1856 (with his sister and much older half-brother, John W. Hill). This migration date to Texas is supported by numerous census records of John W. Hill and his children. Three census records of Nannie Hill (born 1855) indicate her birthplace as Arkansas - although one later census indicates a birthplace of Texas. The earliest census record of Magraret Hill (born 1858) indicates her birthplace as Arkansas - although three later census records indicate her birthplace was Texas. All seven census records of Benjamin Hill (born 1860) and James Hill (born 1866) indicate that they were born in Texas. Tax Rolls of Hays County, Texas clearly show John Hill living in Hays County, Texas by 1867 and other tax rolls suggest that John Hill resided in Hays County, Texas from 1863 through 1866 as well. John W. Hill’s half-sister, Margaret Hill, married in Hays County, Texas in 1867 and Rhoda Hill, daughter of John W. Hill, married in Hays County, Texas in 1868. John and Mary Hill were the parents of nine children:

.....Elijah J. Hill (12.1), b. September 29, 1844, Arkansas
.....Rhoda Hill (13), b. July 6, 1846, Arkansas
.....John “C.” Hill (12.3), b. December, 1849, Arkansas
.....Sarah Elizabeth Hill (12.4), b. May 14, 1850, Arkansas
.....Thomas H. Hill (12.5), b. November 8, 1853, Arkansas
.....Nancy J. Hill (12.6), b. January 11, 1855, Arkansas
.....Margaret Hill (12.7), b. November 28, 1858, Arkansas
.....Benjamin F. Hill (12.8), b. July 2, 1860, Texas
.....James M. “Robert” Hill (12.9), b. September 12, 1866, Texas

The 1867 Tax List of Hays County, Texas show John Hill paid taxes on no land, 12 horses ($150), 44 cattle ($170), misc. ($105). From 1870 to 1880, “John” and Mary Hill were living in Hays County, Texas. In 1878, John W. Hill had 160 acres of land surveyed for his homestead premption in Hays County, Texas. In 1881, John Hill sold this homestead land to R. W. Gibbs for $200. This land was located about two miles northeast of the Wimberley Cemetery. In 1882, John W. Hill and his son, Elijah J. Hill, purchased 640 acres of land located about about two miles northeast of the Wimberley Cemetery. In 1883, John W. Hill sold 320 acres of this land to Mrs. Bashbey Braswell for $350. John W. Hill died in 1895 in Hays County, Texas and Mary Ann (Reed) Hill died in 1898 in Hays County, Texas. Both were buried in the Wimberley Cemetery in Wimberley, Texas.

References: 1) Census, Isaac and Mary Hill, Scott County, Arkansas, Call Number 146, HH 266/266, 1850; 2) Census, John and Mary A.
Page 180, Yarbrough book, says that "Edmond was five years old when he moved with his father and step-mother to Scott Co. AR. He grew up in the vicinity of Waldron, Ark., and on 22 Feb. 1862, along with his father, Samuel Yandle, and several other relatives, he was enrolled in the 19th Reg't Arkansas Infantry for Confederate sevice. He was inducted by Col. C.L. Dawson. Notwithstanding his eligibility for discharge at the end of one year's servce, Edmond D. Yandell continued as a Confederate soldier until the war ended."

Page 181, "Although the Scott Co. Court House burned ca. 1881 with all of its records, there are a few transactions concerning Edmond D. which were recorded between E.D. Yandell and E.E. Payne. E.D. Yandell deeded land to Pricilla Yandell, his wife, on 24 Nov. 1898..........From 1892 to 1894, E.D. Yandell served as judge in Scott Co. AR."

"Mrs. Lucinda Middlebrook, the youngest surviving daughter of Edmond and Pricilla Yandell, is now 97 years of age in early 1982. Still exceptionally quick-of-mind and with a vivid recollection of the past. Lucinda recited incidents concerning her father with a gentle chuckle. Paraphrased, one of the stories was as followes:
"Any traveller stopping by the farm of Edmond Yandell was always invited to spend the night. Consequently, itenerant drummers (salesmen) were sometimes a guest. Each time a peddler or salesman was invited to stay, Edmond would declare privately to his family, "That feller doesn't doesn't need to expect to sell me anything, because I'm NOT going to buy it." But invariable, it seemed, each time a salesman took his leave of the family he left them the possessors of a new sewing machine, a new lightning rod on each corner of the house, or a new cotton mattress to replace the 'straw ticks' which they and most of the other settlers in the area were accustomed to use. Edmond's lack of sales resistance was remembered as the frequent subject of affectionate family humor."
=========
I assume by E.D., you mean Edmond Dallas. The book
shows land records in Scott County for him; also, a story by his daughter, Lucinda, about him; and lists units he served in the Civil War, CSA. If you want the story e-mail me and I'll send.

wy

JOSEPH L. TAYLOR, b. 1824 Illinois; to AR1850

Searching for ancestors of Joseph L. Taylor, born ca. 1824 in Illinois. He married Jane Ann __________ (Schmidt or Smith). Said to have had 13 children, the first two being born in AR - James F., born 1846, and Narcissa Ann, born 1849 who was my g-grandmother.

Who was Joseph L. Taylor's father? Family tradition says he was a "hard-shelled Baptist preacher". In the 1850 Scott Co. Census, in Hickman Township, in the household of Hugh J. Taylor was a male, age 58, listed as J. W. Taylor, and his occupation was given as "local preacher". Could this have been Joseph L. Taylor's father?

Is there a listing of early Baptist preachers in Scott County?

Any information very much appreciated. Glad to exchange information.

Several Reed's in the area too. One of my Reed's ended up in Texas. William R. Reed b 1845 s/o Thomas and Elizabeth Richards Reed.

JJ Reed - 1828 (IN) to early 1860s (AR)

I am looking for the family of my GGgrandfather, JJ Reed, but it has been difficult becausse I know very little about him. This is what I do know:
He was born ~1828 in Indiana.
He married Mary Malissa Talkington before 1855, probably in Tomlinson, Scott, AR. She was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Bland) Talkington.
By 1860, they had two daughters (Delina J, 1855 and Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie), 1857) and were living in Tumlinsonville, Tomlinson Township, Scott Co, AR
JJ died sometime between 1862 (when his third daughter, Georgia Mattie) was born and 1865 when his wife remarried in Missouri.
Did he fight in the War? Did he die as a result of the war? Where and when did he die?
The only other tiny piece of information I have about him is that there was another young couple living nearby in 1860 - HZ Reed. This man's marriage also shows up in the Scott Co marriage records. However, I am only guessing that they are related.
I would love to know which of the Reed famiies in the area was his and his first name. With that, I think i could go a lot further in available documents!
