(no age given) AL

Brawley Township,(postoffice Sugarloaf)Sebastian County, Arkansas June 11, 1860 federal census reads:
Denton, Joel E. 74, VA
R. P., 35, AL
Perthenia, 35, TN
Mary, 30, AL
Jane, 17, AL
Mary Frances, 13, AL
Ann E., 10, AL
Two houses down are:
Denton, W. W., 45, TN
Eliza, 47, TN
W. H. 18, AL
Madora E., 15, AL
Eliza A, 12, AL
James A, 9, AL
Thomas W, 7, AL

The Joel and W.W. families also apparently are in Scott County in 1860 according to the Scott County GenWeb site.
I am particularly interested in John on the AL census, but missing on the AR census. Does anyone have information concerning this family? The John I am trying to connect to is affiliated with Davison, Keith, Bunch, Cheek and others.
JOSEPH L. TAYLOR, b. 1824 Illinois; to AR1850

Searching for ancestors of Joseph L. Taylor, born ca. 1824 in Illinois. He married Jane Ann __________ (Schmidt or Smith). Said to have had 13 children, the first two being born in AR - James F., born 1846, and Narcissa Ann, born 1849 who was my g-grandmother.

Who was Joseph L. Taylor's father? Family tradition says he was a "hard-shelled Baptist preacher". In the 1850 Scott Co. Census, in Hickman Township, in the household of Hugh J. Taylor was a male, age 58, listed as J. W. Taylor, and his occupation was given as "local preacher". Could this have been Joseph L. Taylor's father?

Is there a listing of early Baptist preachers in Scott County?

Any information very much appreciated. Glad to exchange information.

Isaac Hill who mar. Mary Reed - ca 1842
I am trying to locate Hill and Reed cousins who resided in Scott County, AR. According to two Death Certificates in TX, John W. Hill was married to Mary Ann Reed or Mary E. Reed (born 1822 in AL). John W. Hill was also known as Isaac Hill while living in Arkansas. Isaac and Mary Hill were living in Scott County, AR (Hickman Twp) in the 1850 census. Isaac's father, John Hill may have married in 1836 in Pope County, AR. Isaac Hill and Mary Reed were married around 1842 in Arkansas (possibly Scott or Pope County, AR). There are several Reed families in the 1850 census in Hickman Twp, Scott County, AR that may be relatives to Mary Reed. I have around 1,000 descendant of this Hill Family at my web site: http://www.rcasey.net (select Acrobat Versions, Brooks Family History, go to back of the book where the allied line Hill Family History is covered. Here is the current sketch on Mary (Reed) Hill:

JOHN W. HILL (aka Isaac Hill) (12) is the oldest proven Hill ancestor of the authors. John was born around 1822. Most census records indicate that John was born in Illinois but others indicated Arkansas and South Carolina. It is believed that John W. Hill changed his name from Isaac Hill to John W. Hill when he moved from Arkansas to Texas. Alta (Crapps) Leath gives the following account of John Hill’s change of name: my “older half brother (John W. Hill) had a problem with the law and, though he was innocent, he felt it best to leave the area. He moved with his family and his half brother, Eli Hill, and his half sister, Margaret Elizabeth Hill to Texas and changed his name to John W. Hill.” This name change is supported by census records in Arkansas and Texas. According to Certificate of Death of Mrs. Maggie Massey, John Hill married Mary Ann Reed.

According to Certificate of Death of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Moore, John Hill married Mary E. Reed. Mary was born around 1822 in Alabama. In 1850, “Isaac” and Mary Hill were living in Scott County, Arkansas (federal census). In the 1850 Agricultural Census, Scott County, Arkansas lists: “Isaac Hill, 15 acres of improved land valued at $250.00 amd $5.00 worth of farming implements. He owned three horses, five milch cows, four other cattle and forty swine valued at $140.00. His farm had produced 200 bushels of Indian corn, 20 bushels of sweet pototoes and 20 pounds of butter valued at $15.00. He had slaughtered livestock valued at $20.00.

According his Confederate pension papers of John W. Hill’s younger half-brother, Eli Hill moved to San Marcos, Texas in 1856 (with his sister and much older half-brother, John W. Hill). This migration date to Texas is supported by numerous census records of John W. Hill and his children. Three census records of Nannie Hill (born 1855) indicate her birthplace as Arkansas - although one later census indicates a birthplace of Texas. The earliest census record of Magraret Hill (born 1858) indicates her birthplace as Arkansas - although three later census records indicate her birthplace was Texas. All seven census records of Benjamin Hill (born 1860) and James Hill (born 1866) indicate that they were born in Texas. Tax Rolls of Hays County, Texas clearly show John Hill living in Hays County, Texas by 1867 and other tax rolls suggest that John Hill resided in Hays County, Texas from 1863 through 1866 as well. John W. Hill’s half-sister, Margaret Hill, married in Hays County, Texas in 1867 and Rhoda Hill, daughter of John W. Hill, married in Hays County, Texas in 1868. John and Mary Hill were the parents of nine children:

.....Elijah J. Hill (12.1), b. September 29, 1844, Arkansas
.....Rhoda Hill (13), b. July 6, 1846, Arkansas
.....John “C.” Hill (12.3), b. December, 1849, Arkansas
.....Sarah Elizabeth Hill (12.4), b. May 14, 1850, Arkansas
.....Thomas H. Hill (12.5), b. November 8, 1853, Arkansas
.....Nancy J. Hill (12.6), b. January 11, 1855, Arkansas
.....Margaret Hill (12.7), b. November 28, 1858, Arkansas
.....Benjamin F. Hill (12.8), b. July 2, 1860, Texas
.....James M. “Robert” Hill (12.9), b. September 12, 1866, Texas

The 1867 Tax List of Hays County, Texas show John Hill paid taxes on no land, 12 horses ($150), 44 cattle ($170), misc. ($105). From 1870 to 1880, “John” and Mary Hill were living in Hays County, Texas. In 1878, John W. Hill had 160 acres of land surveyed for his homestead premption in Hays County, Texas. In 1881, John Hill sold this homestead land to R. W. Gibbs for $200. This land was located about two miles northeast of the Wimberley Cemetery. In 1882, John W. Hill and his son, Elijah J. Hill, purchased 640 acres of land located about about two miles northeast of the Wimberley Cemetery. In 1883, John W. Hill sold 320 acres of this land to Mrs. Bashbey Braswell for $350. John W. Hill died in 1895 in Hays County, Texas and Mary Ann (Reed) Hill died in 1898 in Hays County, Texas. Both were buried in the Wimberley Cemetery in Wimberley, Texas.

References: 1) Census, Isaac and Mary Hill, Scott County, Arkansas, Call Number 146, HH 266/266, 1850; 2) Census, John and Mary A.

Benton Franklin Jett was married to Nancy Elizabeth Goolsby in Scott Co. Ar on Mar 18, 1887. Cemetery records and Arkansas death records show B F Jett died Jan. 13,1944. The 1930 US census lists Nannie Jett and her children and shows her as a widow. Am I confusing 2 different people or can someone come up with an explanation?

POW/MIA Korean War, Scott Co. LEMARR

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Scott County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: LLOYD OTIS LEMARR
Born: December 7, 1926
Date of loss: October 3, 1951. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Scott County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I need a land record look up! I have tried several places and get no response. I need a to find records showing how and when Lavina L. Cline sold her 120 acre property. I880 agriculture survey show that she had 120 acres in Scott Co., Hickman Twnship. I would like to see if there was an Isaac Crow that had to sign off his rights of Dower. If anyone can help or point me to some others that could help I would be most grateful.

William Ayres Moody

I am continuing my search for any info or connections to the Wolf family in Scott Co., Ar.

Does anyone have any info on the family of William Ayres Moody found in household 789 on 1860 Scott Co. Census in Hickman Township? He was m to Nancy Wolf Moody, who I believe could have been related to other Wolf family in that area. There are two m. sons in Scott Co., as well. Thomas Moody is in household 778; Mark Moody is in household 782.

My grandmother's uncle Tobias Washington Wolf moved his family from Upshur Co., Tx. to Scott Co. at the start of the Civil War. His family is located in 1860 in household 776. Henry Wolf and family are next door in 777. John Wolf and family are in household 826. William Anthony who m. Anne Wolf is locted in household 68 in Lafayette Township. I believe all these families to be realted, but I have not been able to prove the connection.

Tobe Wolf, Henry Moody, and Marcus Moody all served in the Civil War in the Arkansas Mounted Rifles.

Both Tobe Wolf and Ayres Moody moved back to Upshur Co., Tx. after the War. Nancy Wolf Moody is said to have died there about 1865. Ayres Moody then is said to have remarried.

Any info on these families would be greatly appreciated.

On 1900 Census from Mena, Polk, Ark., they had children John C. b. 1894, Sarah b. 1895, Harvey M b. 1898, and Jackson M b. 1900. Robert then married Mrs. George Ann Williams on June 9, 1909 in Scott County, Ark. Last time found was on 1930 Census for Dow, Pittsburg, OK. Would appreciate any lead on this family!
Thank you!

I have hit a brick hall. I am searching for Henry Condry born between 1800-1810. The first time I found him on on 1835 tax list for St. Francis co. 1839 tax list for Poinsett co. On 1840 census list Henry Condry with 2 children. boy and girl. no wife. Around 1841 Henry married Mary Greenwood, daughter of David and Sarah Greenwood. On 1850 census shows that Henry and Mary had 4 children. David George born 1842. Amanda, Elizabeth, Susan, also shows that Mary Condry has married Thompson Cooper. I thought for long time that maybe Henry had died, now I am wondering if they divorced, Henry moved to different state or did he really died. I can not find anything on Henry after 1840. On 1860 census Mary has moved out of Poinsett co. with her husband Thompson Cooper, the 4 Condry children was placed within different households. David George living with his Grandmother, Sarah Greenwood.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
Seeking records and information about Cyrus "Worth" Neff, who lived in and around Scott County for about 30 years. I would like to know where he is buried. I know he was still alive for the 1930 census, but he was quite elderly then, about 80. He married to Doviah Emma (Brown) in 1883 in IL and had sons Frank Cyrus Neff and Johnson Fowler Neff who also lived in the Scott County area. They also had a daughter Nora who move dto CA by 1930 and a son Hugh, who also moved to San Diego area. Frank Neff's family lived out near Winfield for many years and had relatives over in Heavener, too. Frank was married to Dora Eva (Cagle) and then to Ersie Hawthorne, who is buried in Sehorn Cem. Would like to know about occupations, addresses this family lived at and of the death and burial site of Cyrus Worth.
I know Frank Neff was buried in CA, near his four daughters, and his mother D. "Emma" Neff was buried in CA, too.

Does anyone know of the cemetery called Woodland Memorial Gardens? It is a Babyland cemetery we believe located in Scott county. My friends sister was buried there, but she was too young to understand at the time, and then by the time she was able to go to the cemetery, no one in the family could remember exactly where the cemetery was. Her sister was Latisha Ann Freeman born Oct 1983 died Nov 13, 1983. The funeral was through Putman Funeral Home (when she attempted to contact them they said that since she could not prove that she is the sister of Latisha without the death cert, they could not give her the death cert!)
Thank you

He is buried in Pearson Cemetery with his first wife Suzana Lucinda "Lula" Higgins but it is my understanding that he had more than two wives. My mother was May Glen Hullander who died in California in 1943. Any information on his other children or an obituary for him would be greatly appreciated. Also any additional information on the Hullander line. May Hullander was the daughter of Henry Asberry and Viola "Ola" Strickland Hullander

I am very excited to have found this forum! I have been researching family history for a couple of years now. Have hit a wall - - my great grandmother, Martha Barbee born in AK 1883. Her parents: S.W. Barbee (TN 1847) and Josaphine (NC 1860). The records stop with the 1900 census. Siblings of Martha: Ollie V (born 1889 Choctaw Nat) and McClellan (born 1894 Cherokee Nat). 1910 census lists additional siblings Ed, Virr (? spelling) as well as nieces/neph Jim, William,Rina, Adros all born in OK between 1902-1909. In addition, McClellan's name is changed to George B. on 1910 record. One of Martha's own children, Gertrude Carey is listed on 1910 census b. 1903 Indian Territory.

I am confused because at the time of the 1900 & 1910 Census' they were in Scott County Lewis twp. AK, yet some of the children were born as stated above. Oral history has it that we are Cherokee through my grandmother's line. Any help, comments, information is considered a major blessing!

Where is he buried?

His children moved on to Texas in the mid-1850s, but he was either dead by that time, or remained in Scott County, due to his age.

Any information much appreciated.
In approximately 1903 or 1904, my grandfather, Mark Harris and his 3 children, Kate Osgood and her 2 sons and other families moved from what is now Pontotoc County, OK, near Ada and Roff, to Scott County and settled near Coaldale (at least these 2 families did). My mother said there were 7 wagons so there had to be other families. If these facts ring a bell with anyone whose ancestors might have been in that group, I'd appreciate hearing from you. My grandfather was a Free Will Baptist minister, so there may have been a connection with people in that church.

Burcham / Bircham Marriage or Cemetery Record Look Up Please!

I've only been able to find 2 records on Green Burcham born abt 1826 in Ark. The only info I have on him is on the 1850 Federal & Argriculture Census records in Scott Co., Tn. Any help on find marriage or deaths of Green & Lovey Burcham would be greatly appreciated. I found the children living with William S. Hogge on the 1860 census records in Wise Co., Tx. Here are the records I found.

1850 Scott Co., Arkansas Agriculture Census
Green Burcham had 25 acres of improved land valued at $300.00 and $6.00 worth of farming implements. He owned 1 horse, 1 milch cow, 4 working oxen, 3 other cattle and 30 swine valued at $111.00. His farm had produced 10 bushels of wheat, 200 bushels of Indian corn, 40 lbs. of wool, 10 bushels of Irish potatoes, 50 bushels of sweet potatoes, 150 lbs. of butter and 10 lbs. of beeswax and honey valued at $40.00. He had slaughtered animals valued at $50.00.

Oct 6, 1850 - Mountain, Scott Co., Ark - p. 142 - house # 219
Green Burcham - 24 - Ark
Lovey A. Burcham - 24 - Ark
Amanda Burcham - 5 - Ark
James Burcham - 3 - Ark
Lovina Burcham - 1/12

July 4, 1860 - Wise Co., Tx - p. 335 - house # 433
William S. Hooge - 42 - SC
Elisabeth Hogge - 38 - SC
Amanda Burcham - 14 - Ark
James M. Burcham - 12 - Ark
Mary Burcham - 10 - Ark
Thos. S. Burcham - 8 - Tx
John Burcham - 5 - Tx

I don't know what happened to Green or Lovey after the 1850 census was taken. It looks like one or both were still alive in 1854/ 1855 in Tx.
I don't have a clue on how they are related to the Hogge family???? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank You, Nicki Osborne
