Guess/Guest's 1830-1840

William Guest and Lester Bushnell obtained some land together in 1839 per BLM records, in Polaski Count, Arkansas. 1840 census has Sarah Guest, 40-50 years of age, with a daughter 15-20 years old -- the 2 of them are all alone in the husehold. William is not present.

There was a Martin Guest (0020001; 0111 -- 1 adult male 40-50 years old, 1 daughter 15-20, one female and 2 males 10-15, 1 female 5-10) in the county in 1830, but I see no reason to see a connection with William in 1839 -- I might be wrong, though. Martin had left before 1839 for Hot Springs, Arkansas.

There is a Vincent Guess in 1840 census of Polaski County, with his wife, whose name is unknown. Both are 40-50 years old, no children. I suspect if the Vincent Guess and William Guest families are related it is only distantly. I don't know however, for certain.

thanks

Vance Hawkins

John Alexander Pickens born October 1868 (some say 1869) of Hardin County, Tennessee and died 1936; married Helen Jane Littlejohn born 1872 in Arkansas and died April 11, 1945 – they married before 1898 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. In 1880 John, age 14, lived with his mother Mary, age 35, widowed, and his sister Laura, age 11 – the children were at school. Family records state that John moved to Texas at about age 17 years and was never heard from again by the Clark family. They had 2 children between 1898 and 1903 in Texas (possibly in Ellis County and Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas; they border each other in east central Texas).
Any help with this family would be appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

Ben COHEN; 1921-2006

OBITUARY
Ben Cohen; shy Coronado civic leader loved challenging projects

By Jack Williams
STAFF WRITER
December 10, 2006
Port and planning commissioner. Coronado councilman. School board president. Hospital board member. Mayoral candidate. Business owner.
The roles changed, but Ben Cohen's understated, conciliatory nature never did.
As he reached his mid-70s, he took on one last project: spearheading efforts to expand and renovate the Coronado Public Library.
“He said, 'I hope to be around long enough to see this completed,'” recalled his wife, Loris.
In June 2005, the 1,000-square-foot library opened on Orange Avenue, easing chronic overcrowding and rewarding Mr. Cohen and his colleagues for the decade-long commitment.
“Ben was involved in so many facets of civic life in Coronado that he always had very sage advice,” said Christian Esquevin, the library services director. “He was very strong in picking out what was important about an issue and not chasing after windmills. He knew what direction to follow.”
Mr. Cohen died Dec. 2 at Coronado Hospital, where he was taken after collapsing at his home about three weeks ago. He was 85.
His family attributed the death to natural causes and advancing age.
“Ben was a very, very shy and reserved man,” his wife said. “When I was dating him, my dad said, 'Does he ever say anything?' He listened to everybody and always did his homework.”
Although Cohen admitted that mingling with crowds and making speeches were not his strengths, he enjoyed talking to people one on one to resolve problems.
The low-key approach resulted in a string of political victories that Mr. Cohen took into Coronado's 1986 mayoral race, which he lost to incumbent R.H. Dorman.
“When he had to campaign, he opened up a little,” his wife said.
As a port commissioner, including the role of chairman in 1983, he was intensely involved in one of San Diego's biggest-ever projects: development of the $125 million San Diego Convention Center on Navy Field. Ground was broken in May 1985.
Because of his efforts on a subcommittee charged with shaping plans for the Convention Center, Mr. Cohen's term on the Port Commission was extended so he could participate in the final decision.
“His quiet, behind-the-scenes efforts contributed to the move to establish strict cost controls for the project,” a 1985 Tribune editorial stated.
When he stepped down from his commissioner post, Mr. Cohen left his options open.
“I love politics and the challenge of working on a project,” he told The San Diego Union. “If I accomplish something, I get satisfaction – personal satisfaction.”
Mr. Cohen, of German Jewish descent, was born June 22, 1921, in Little Rock, Ark.
He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, including a tour in the Pacific theater.
“I met him on a blind date, a week before my 16th birthday, when he was a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis,” his wife said. They married in 1945 and moved to Coronado in 1948.
Mr. Cohen, who earned his degree in business administration, joined in-laws in a family business, the Coronado Department Store. He operated the store until it closed in 1981, then joined another family business, Ferer's Surplus.
He became vice president and general manager of Ferer's, a store that evolved from military surplus to outdoor and camping gear. The store, which his father-in-law helped found, closed in 1986.
Mr. Cohen's success as a charitable fundraiser started him on a course of community service.
“He did so well they asked him to join the Coronado Planning Commission,” his wife said.
Mr. Cohen served as a Coronado planner from 1954 to 1959. He served on the school board from 1957 to 1968, then was elected to his first of three terms on the City Council.
During his third council term, his colleagues appointed him to the Port Commission.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Loris; daughters, Paula Cohen of Coronado and Tani Cohen of Los Angeles; and son, David of Encinitas.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 6 at Coronado Public Library. Donations are suggested to Friends of the Coronado Public Library, Coronado Hospital Association and San Diego Hospice.
In 1991 there was a article in the Arkansas Democrat Newspaper in Little Rock, Arkansas about Jewell Lay. There was a photo of her and it chronicled some of early days in Arkansas. Does anyone know who I can get a copy of that article? I don't remember the month, but do know it was in 1991 as she died soon after the article was published.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Carol Lay
glay@centurytel.net

I am searching for Ernest Willis he should have a brother named Mckinley, a sister named either Rose or Marie a father named Charlie(possibly a nickname) and a mother named Rose or Marie. He possibly died while saving a child from drowning in Little Rock. I think he owned a irrigation company maybe even the one that put in the landscape sprinklers for Baptist medical center in Little Rock. His brother Mckinley was born about 1910. Mckinley is my grandfather I am trying to search his parents but have very little to go on. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find out about two early wives of my grandfather, Lilburn Christopher George. His DOB is 22 Aug 1926.

The first wife was Evelyn M., and they were divorced 17 Mar 1952.

The second wife was Dorothy, and they were divorced 29 Jul 1954.

The divorce certificates were issued in Pulaski County.

I'm hoping to find marriage licenses that might indicate the maiden names of these women; or maybe someone who might know them personally.

--Josh

Does anyone in Pulaski/Faulkner counties have any information on Jefferson Robbins (1851-1902) and Bettie Fortson (1854-1930), married before 1873? Both were born in AR, probably in Pulaski, around Bayou Meto. Jefferson Robbins is listed in 1860 and 1870 censuses as living with John M and Edna A Hinkston.
Family oral history says that Jefferson was adopted by Hinkston, and there may be an adoption record somewhere. We know about the two of them from marriage on, but nothing about their early years or pedigree. Anyone know anything?
Alvin McCraw

My great-grandfather, Alvin McCraw, has been almost impossible to trace. The only mentions I've ever been able to find were the 1910 census in Jacksonville, Grey Township, Arkansas. He lives with my great-grandmother, Emma Wood McCraw, and their son, Willis Alvin McCraw. The only other mentions I've found were in Emma's death certificate in which he's listed as her husband and in my grandfather Bernie McCraw's Social Security application form in which they are listed as Al and Emma McCraw. Emma died on Oct. 16, 1914. The couple had three children in all - Willis Alvin, known as Buster; Bernie Marvin, known as Bud; and Sarah Estelle, who later married Charles Dillon. Sarah lived in North Little Rock for her entire married life. Willis went to California and Bernie lived several places including Florida, Mississippi and Connecticut. I've been working to try to sort this out for about 10 years. I'd appreciate any help I could get.

County Judges

Does anyone know if there is a website that has a listing of county judges for Pulaski County? Or maybe there is a book somewhere. In a Grapevine, Texas county history my grandmother states that her father, Arch SMITH (1870-1944), was the son of a county judge for Little Rock. I don't have any information on Arch's parents other than this "judge" info. I have found more than one Arch Smith listed in census and with a surname of Smith I need all the help I can get to determine the accuracy of her statement. I can only guess that the timeframe I should be looking for is 1880's-1930. Unfortunately she is no longer here to ask. If anyone can give me a nudge in the right direction and I find him, you know I will be doing the "Happy Dance".

In 1942 I found him in Little Rock, Arkansas on the WWII draft registration born 11 Feb 1895 in Grenada, MS. I am trying to figure out if all are the same person. Can anyone help me?

Am looking to confirm burial of the following person:

Isaac H. Teague, born 1835 in Henderson County, TN. We show he died August 26, 1863 as a result of wounds from a battle near Austin, Lonoke County, Arkansas, and was buried in the Confederate Memorial Cemetery in Little Rock, AR.

Is there an online transcription that might list Isaac? Or someone who could tell me if he is buried there?

Thank you,

Patricia Quinn

1880 Eastman and Mineral twps.

We Downey researchers have a cooincidence that is bugging us. In 1880 Census page 590B for Eastman, Pulaski, Arkansas and on page 523B for Mineral, Pulaski, Arkansas there are Downey family. Each has a Solomon Downey and a Jacob Downey born in OHIO. The ages are mostly off by 5 years. In both twp. Jacob is married to a Lucinda and Solomon is married to a Margaret. Both Solomon's first two children are Mary and William. The Solomon in Mineral seems to be the one we are tracking from 1850 in OH but we need to find out who the other family is to be certain, especially with only 5 years difference in ages. Could there be a mess up with the 1880 Census in these twps.? I am on this board but not a subscriber of the Pulaski list. Thank you. Linda Swaney Sabin in Greene Co. OH

I am looking for a death notice or obit for Iola Mae Dillon Dunkin Sharpe (Mrs. C. E. Sharpe) who was interred at Roselawn in Little Rock on 13 July 1962. I do not have her actual date of death other than "July 1962" from the SSDI.

When in Litte Rock a couple of weeks ago I was unable to view the film for the newspaper of July 1962 at the central library as the film was out for repair. I did not have enough time to go to another library to try to find it. I did find in the films the notice for her husband Cecil E Sharpe in January 1963.

Iola's maiden name was Dillon, and she was the widow of Walter G. Dunkin of Little Rock. The cemetery has her as "Mrs. C. E. Sharpe" so I assume that would be the title of the notice. I don't know if there would have been a full obituary in addition to a death notice. Both would be great. Can anyone give me a hand here?

Marie

I came across the WWII draft card of an ancestor just now and something about it intrigued me. Under employer's name it said, "W.P.A." (Works Progress Administration) and under Place of Employment it said, "Airport, Harrington St., Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas"

Now a search of the Little Rock area turned up a Harrington Ave very close near the current Little Rock National Airport. So I'm wondering, does anyone know anything about the W.P.A. and any work they may have done at the airport? I'm just wondering if my ancestor helped build the airport or not and if so maybe find out what (a building, runway, etc.) he and the WPA may have been building.

Thanks,
Jared

In our Dawson family bible, there is an entry where Mr. Clarence William Lavah married Miss Johnnie Hamilton on 5 Nov 1901. Trouble is, I can't find a single record, of any kind, for "Lavah". If someone has access to Pulaski County marriage records, could you look this up for me? I am betting that the last name is misspelled. Johnnie was the daughter of John H. Hamilton and Laura E. (Robins) Stillwell.
