I am looking for information about the following family names: Dahl, Cunningham, Jones, Tucker. Walter Edward Jones was the Polk County Sheriff from 1928-1937. He also may have held other elected positions in the Mena area. He married Dove Lee Cunningham November 3, 1903 in Mena. They had 4 girls, Hazel, Dorothy (died as infant) Sybil (died in car accident at the age of 21) and Doris. Dove's mother's name was Mary Dahl who married John Henry Cunningham around 1875. Hazel married James Tucker in 1923.
I am searching for information on Greenberry Davis and wife Nancy J. Davis, both buried in the Piney Cemetary. I do not have exact dates for them. Greenberry passed away in the mid-40's, Nancy in 1970 or 1971. She was born in the early 1880's or late 1870's. These are my paternal great-grandparents. My grandfather was Johnnie Davis, also buried in Piney Cemetary. His date of death was April 13, 1997. My father is Vernon L. Davis. Any information is welcome, and relatives are invited to email sdholloway@minister.com

Thank you!
Sheila Holloway

Old Photos: Stanford, Lance, Sims, Mason

I have some (eight) old photos of my mother's half sister's family that belonged to my mother. My cousin was Donna Lee Stanford Lance, Mena, Polk County, Arkansas (1934-1985). My mother, Thelma Sims Parker, came to live with us in Texas in 1980 a few years after my father's death. She had marked these photos to be given to Donna Lee. Unfortunately, Donna Lee became ill and died before we could get them to her. There are no identifications on the pictures, but I know that there is a picture of her mother, Lula and her father, Comanche; also probably brothers Kenneth, Donald and Teddy.

I fondly remember visiting and playing with Donna Lee as I grew up in Polk County.

I have made a connection with another member whose two aunts were married to two of the Stanford brothers; I offered her the pictures and will be sending or emailing them to her. I have found another tree whose owner seems to be named Elder, whom I believe may be Donna Lee's daughter, but am unable to email her, either through Ancestry or private email. I would very much like for Donna's descendants to have copies also. I will scan then and can email them to one person and send the originals to the other person.

If someone would contact me at the email address below, I'll be happy to send them.

Frances Russell
farussell@verizon.net

They were married about 1883 according to the 1900 census. Their children were: Lenora, William, Mollie, Joeann, Florence, Benjamin, Ellen (my husband's grandmother) and Brook. Any information on Amelia would be greatly appreciated. My mother-in-law knows nothing about Amelia's family, as her mother, Ellen, would not speak of her family when she was alive.

My great-grandparents, James Isaac Baker d. 8 Dec 1900 and Elizabeth Baxley Baker d. 30 Jun 1991, according to family lore died in Mena and were buried in Eagleton Cemetery. Does this cemetery actually exist? Also cannot find them in the 1900 Census for Mena. Their children were John Henderson, Nancie E. N., William E., Nellie Matthew (my grandmother), Louise J. "Lulie", Isaac Thomas, Ella A.V. Victoria, and James Robert "Bob". (the last three children were supposedly born in Arkansas, the others in Mississippi).
I have used the sources available at the Salt Lake Family History Library and can find no mention of this cemetery. There is one named Eagle with a lot of unmarked graves. Is anyone familar with this family? or do any of you have any suggestions for me.
Transcription with headstone photos available for Cecil Chapel Cemetery at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~b4us/
There are many markers with no names - if you can assign a name to a marker let me know. Several of the markers had fresh flowers - so someone has to know who they are.

If you're related to the Cecil, Dugan, Rickey, Webb, Lebow or others related to Cecils of Polk County, you might look at my site www.ececil2.net. I have posted a gedcom along with pictures, obits and headstone. I do require a password to access the site, simply follow the directions.

Hi: I'm searching for information about Henry G. Rind, born 1810/11 in Georgetown, DC, married Rebecca Rowzee Jan. 17, 1835. Last known date and location I have for him is Dallas County, Arkansas. He was a lawyer and missionary to the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma earlier in his career and fought for the Confederacy until age and ill health forced him to resign. His son-in-law was Charles Atkins. I believe he died in Polk Co., Arkansas, in 1879, but I'm trying to get any information about him I can or narrow his exact death date so I can locate an obit. Thanks.

Hello,

I'm unfamiliar with the quantity and search methods for Polk County marriage records, but if anyone happens upon them, I would really appreciate a lookup!

I'm looking for any evidence of a William Theodore Foran that married Charita Pricilla Griffith. My guess is it would have been around 1864 or 1865 (first child I know of was born Dec 1865). They were in Sebastian County by 1870, but my hunch is they were married in Polk Co. Any help would be so much appreciated!
Mike Stauffer

I know that her first name is correct, because I found it on a Census record with the Parker surname. Alfred James was my grandfather, David Parker's father, who is upposed to hve died in 1883. I have found information on the Parkers, but am coming up with nothing on Mary Jane Settles. David Green Parker was married to Georgia Ann Ellison.

Thanks for reading.

Frances Parker Russell
farussell@verizon.net

I am looking for information about my gggrandparents, William Johnson and Elizabeth Hamner who lived in Polk County Arkansas. They had a daughter Julia Ann Johnson in July of 1885 and they lived in the county at that time. I know that they were both born in Arkansas, but I don't know exactly where. I'm in the process of trying to prove Native American heritage and would appreciate any information that I can get. Julia Ann married Melvin Elbert Craven and moved out of the state. Can anyone help?

I am researching my husband's family there in Polk County. I am seeking information on George Liles(b1827 in SC) who is found with wife, Salina Whisenant(b1830 SC) , and children in 1860 Polk Co. census. Family history says he came to this country from Ireland, but the census states the above.
I am also seeking info on the Wimberly family. My husband's grgrandfather was George Grundy Wimberly and his father was Major Harris Wimberly. I'd like to know who his father was....Major evidently scandalized the family by being hung for desertion during the civil war.
My husband's mother was a Mourton. We are back to her greatgrandfather, Joseph Hugh Mourton, who we know was born in 1822 in Ireland. I am trying to find out where in Ireland and what port he came into. Thanks

Arkansas Marriage records by county

I am looking to see if there is a website either by counties or statewide that has a list of marriage records or telephone numbers for the courts that would would have such marriage records for each county.

I am looking for my mothers marriage record - PHYLLIS JUNE EDGE to BOBBIE DEAN MILLER married in 1947, she was still in her Senior year in High School so she could not have gone far to get married. She was actually living in Heavener, LeFlore County, Oklahoma at the time. I have found most of my relatives records online and I am in the process of ordering them from the LeFlore county Courts.

Since she is not listed on any of the LeFlore records the clerk suggested I look in the Polk, Scott and Sebastian counties of Arkansas. I did find some of my Brazil family in Sebastian county online and now I can order those records. She also stated that a lot of people from Heavener, OK went to Waldron, Scott county due to the fact they could get a blood test and license the same day.

I posted here on the Polk county message board because it seems more active than the Scott county message board.

My mother has since passed away and she is one of the last marriage records I would like to get a copy of to complete my collection.

LeFlore county Oklahoma has done a wonderful job of posting up all there marriage records, and has a lot of the probate records for wills, and other things and is still working on finishing up all the older records. I found my great great Aunt's marriage record from 1899 on the LeFlore county website and I am in the process of getting a copy of it. I am hoping that Arkansas has done something similar.

If anyone can be of any help I would so greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

courtwell2006

You can also email me at: courtwell@hotmail.com

On the 30th day of May, 1902, Mr. B.F. Howard passed from this life of dark clouds and storms to the place where there will be no sorrow. Just before his death he called his friends around him and said "I want you all to know that I am ready to go, may God bless and protect the sorrowing ones."
Brother Howard has been a faithful worker in Sunday School at Highland for 10 years. He was always at his place in any good institution for the betterment of the young people.
DEASONs in Polk County

I am looking for information on my DEASON family. Josiah Deason (b. OCT 25 1833) who married Mary Ann Duke (b. MAY 15 1834). They married on FEB 9 1854 in Pontotoc County, MS. They appear on the Polk County census in 1870. Their three sons were born in Polk County, Thomas Richard (b. 1871), Joseph M. (b. 1874), and Walter Alvin (b. 1881). Josiah and Mary both died in MAR 1900, just four days apart. I assume they died in Polk County. On the 1900 census, their three sons are living in the same household in Mena. We found mail addressed to their youngest son Walter, which was address to Walter Deason, OPAL, AR, Polk County. Family stories indicate that Josiah Deason was an active member of the Masons, but I can't seem to verify that one way or the other. If anyone can help me with my family, please let me know. Thanks for anything you can provide.
Recently I started working on my family tree and thought I'd look for "cousins" who might have more info than I do. My mother was a CRAWFORD, her father was Jack CRAWFORD born in 1901 near Black Springs, Arkansas to Harriet COX b. 1875 and George Fleming CRAWFORD b. 1870. I show George Fleming CRAWFORD's parents as John W. CRAWFORD and Nancy Elizabeth BATES.
I have Harriet COX's father listed as Moses Charnock COX, her mother as Harriet Margaret JEFFERY.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?
I'm also going to post on the Montgomery County board since there was lots of movement between the two counties.
Thanks!

There is a Mary Anderson buried next to my great grandfather, John T. Deshazo, but I have no clue as to who buried her there. She died in 1938. I suspect she may be my great grandmother. She had been divorced from John T. a long time and both had remarried. Who would have buried them close to each other. Any clues as to where I might look next would be much appreciated.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Polk County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: MILES HUGH KIDD
Born: April 2, 1928
Date of loss: November 30, 1950. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Polk County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Im lookin for a Donia Callie Bratton. She was born in 1894 and had 5 childern with a fella William Aurthur Marshall which I am havig trouble finding. Their kids were John Thomas (my grandfather), George, Jesse, Ollie Fae, Ola Mae. All had the Marshall name. Donia carried the Marshall name till the day she died in 1950. I found her in the 1920 cences under Dona Thweatt with all her childeren listed under surname Marshall and as S.B. Thweatts stepchilderen. I would like to find out some info on Donia so I can presume my research in her line. Oh if it would help they called her father Bud. Also if anyone has info on William Aurther Marshall I have hit a brick wall there too. Suppossibly He died around 1918 or 1919 at a pretty young age but I cant find any death records on him. I do have alot of Pictures of Donia's family tho. I also have a couple Pictures of William A. Marshall too, and alot of people I dont know who they are but I do know they were around Oxford Ms. Donia's kids were born around Paris Ms.
If ANYBODY can help me here it would be greatly appreciated.
I have attached a pic of both Donia and William if it will help. My email is williamandbecca@yahoo.com
Thanks,
William C.
Jonathan G Ellison date of death

Jonathan Ellison was my great grandfather, the father of my grandmother Georgia Ann who married David G. Parker. I never knew him. I have found at least four different death dates for him: 1897 - from a story appearing in the Mena Star newspaper in the 1970's. The source of the information was a daughter-in-law, wife of his grandson Marion Ellison. The date of death she gave was Winter of 1897.

Then I have found various listings on One World Tree, The Generations Network: one for 1899, one for 1902 and one for 1899.

How would anyone choose which one to use since I can find no real documentation. Should I list all the various dates in the notes or comments.

I don't believe there is anyone now alive who would know. The cemetery he is buried in is very old, and inaccessible I understand, and I don't know if there is a headstone. Those that are there, I understand, are in bad condition.

Any Suggestions would be very appreciated.

The house located on a Ranch was said to be over 100 years, per article in Rural Arkansas Magazine " The Osage Saga August 1971 addition." Have been able to find nothing before he came to Montague County, Texas. The census say he was born in Georgia but would love to find something on him prior to 1870. I would really like to get one if possible.

Many of my Ellison and Parker families were members there and one of my Ellison ancestors was supposedly the pastor of the church, also known as New Prospect Primitive Baptist Church, for more than thirty years.

Some of my fondest memories as a child are of the all-day Decoration Day event with dinner on the ground usually the last Sunday in May. There we would see old friends after the morning worship service.

I have a few photos of my grandparent's headstones with the cemetery int he background.

Thank you for reading.

Looking for information on: - William Jernigin/Jernigan was a state Representative 1854-1856, though by the way it is listed, not sure if it is just Polk County or includes Scott,Montgomery,Hot Springs? of Arkansas. (William was born 04-14-1819 in Geleo Co., Tenn.) I know he was married to Sallie Newman born 1822 in Arkansas and family history says she was Native American, I think: Cherokee. I also know william was on 1846 Polk County Tax roll with a horse and 5 cattle. I believe they immigrated to Texas in 1850's and Sallie's brother also. (Cow Hill, Commerce,Tx) Very interested to any other jernigin's jernigan's in the Arkansas State or link to Tenn. and very interested in Sallie's heritage and family but not a clue on where to start looking for native american info with no info other than name.
