Looking for any information on Bert Parks, born 9 Mar 1888 and died Jun 1970 in Harrisburg, Poinsett County. An obituary and/or burial site would be nice. He had two brothers (Tice and Troy) who lived in AR and a sister who lived in MS. All of the siblings lived in Indian Territory, OK at one time but migrated to AR and MS, supposedly after their parents died. Bert lived in Memphis for several years, especially during the 1960's. I am the great-granddaughter of Roxie Venia PARKS Allen, Bert's sister, who died in MS in 1965.

Hello,

I am trying to find out more information on my great grandparents, Jesse and Bessie Howard. They lived in Marked Tree and Rivervale in Poinsett County and Black Oak in Craighead County in the 1920's and 1930's.

Jesse was a prosperous timberman until the stock market crash of 1929. He died in 1934.

Could someone who has the Poinsett County History Book please let me know if there is any mention of them? I know a little about Bessie's family, but have very little on Jesse. His father's name may be Frank - but that's not confirmed. I'd love to find out who his parents were and if he had any siblings. Anything on him would be much appreciated.

As much as I'd like to purchase the book, it would be much easier to justify the cost if they're in it! :-)

Thank you kindly for any assistance.

William "Jack" & Nancy Nolen, Ala. in 1900; Poinsett, Ark. 1900-1930

Would like to communicate with anyone who may know of my gr-grandfather, William "Jack" Nolen, and his wife, Nancy (Lee) Nolen, whom he married in Colbert Co., AL in 1896. Jack and Nancy are found in the 1900 Colbert Co. census. They relocated to Poinsett Co., AR circa 1900-1910.

Nancy's relatives, Rose Ely Pendergrass (man) and his father, James D. Pendergrass, relocated to Poinsett Co. around the same time as did Jack and Nancy Nolen. These gentlemen with their families can be located in the 1910 Poinsett Co. census. Jack and Nancy, however, cannot be found in the 1910, 1920 or 1930 censuses in any of the counties in Arkansas or Alabama.

Nancy died on 04 Apr 1924 in Lepanto, Poinsett Co. and is buried in Spear Lake Cemetery in the same county. I would like to know if anyone knows when Jack passed away and where he is buried. Did Jack and Nancy own real estate in Poinsett Co.? I would be very happy to be able to talk with anyone that may have simply known my ancestors.

I live in Birmingham, Alabama and would appreciate any information that someone might be willing to share with me concerning my gr-grandparents. Please help and thank you.

Tommy

I am searching for information about R. V. McWhirter. The only records I have to go by are from an 1880 census record for Arkansas, Poinsett County, Little River TWP.

It states that:
R.V. McWhirter was born in 1839 in Tennessee. He married S. (Sallie?) J. Miller and had the following children: James Henry (1866), John Vinson (1868), Nancy Priscilla (1870), Alis (1872), Thomas D. (1874), William (1875), and Mary/Mollie (1879). R.V.’s parents are unknown but the 1880 census stated that his father was born in South Carolina, and mother in Tennessee.

I have searched census records and am unable to locate him before 1880. I have gathered a little info on his children except for Alis, Thomas D., and William.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated and I am glad to share what I have collected so far.
Thank you, Tena
GREETINGS FROM GIBSON BAYOU CHURCH & CEMETERY

Gibson Bayou Church and Cemetery Fun Day
September 22, 2007 – 9:00 AM until ??
Located on Hwy. 149 North – 2 miles from Earle
Bake Sale – Silent Auction – Entertainment – Food – Drinks
New Revised Book of Church History and Names of People Buried There

It is hard to believe it has been almost a year since we had the great dedication/celebration of the Gibson Bayou rebuilt church. The committee had said that no event would be held this year but numerous requests have received asking to have another FUN DAY. The people who attended last year had such a good time and the ones that did not get to come have asked that it be held again so that they can attend.

Another Fun Day will be held on September 22, 2007. There will be a silent auction with items donated by friends of the church. Anyone who would like to donate something can get in touch with Jack Stepp at 870-792-7574. A bake sale will be held again this year. If you would like to help with this event, please contact Ellen Holloway at 870-792-7342.

Joe Wood has put together a new book with information from people that attended last year and answers to letters that he sent out. He has worked hard to try and get all the names and information corrected and updated. If you have information on any family or friends buried in the cemetery, please get this information to Joe at 870-792-8386.

More entertainment has been lined up for this year. Please bring your lawn chairs, your friends, and come spend the day. The Masonic Lodge members will again be doing the cooking in the concession stand. They did a great job last year and we appreciate their willingness to help out again.

Drawings will be held for a 32 inch Flat Screen LCD Television. Tickets will be available for a donation of $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. All funds raised will be used for care and upkeep of the Church and Cemetery. Tickets can be purchased from any committee member or will be available on the day of the event.

We would love to see you and your family on September 22nd. Come and stay all day and enjoy the music and visit with old friends.

Thanks, Debbie Lunsford Yates

I'm not sure what is going wrong with this bulletin board, but something is a mess. MY message from you said that your reply was to another person other than me and since I haven't written anything other than my two aforementioned Gaither notes, I'm not sure why your post came to me. haha
Nan

I am looking for some people mentioned in another diary as well as info on stores, doctors offices around.

Also does anyone know why the migration from southern illinois to Arkansas in the early 1900s? I can speculate that it had to do with available land but if there are any resources that explain this better I would love to read it.

This is time critical as I only have about 4 weeks to work on the project and get it submitted.

I am interested in more information on a Hattie Lorena Chitwood, born 10 June 1870 in Anderson, Arkansas. This is to settle an on-going disagreement on her last name or her mother's last name. Family bible show her mother's last name as Thompson, However a quick check of records show no Hattie Lorena Thompson as being born on June 10 1870 in Arkansas. This Hattie Lorena Chitwood married J.W. Huddleston born 1 Feb 1865 in Alabama.

Do the records show Hattie Lorena Chitwood's mother's maiden name and of course who her father's name was.

Also, what Dept in Arkansas can I contact to get a record of Hattie Lorena Chitwoods birth.

Wyse, Charley Wyse, James Wyse, and John H. Wyse. They are also connected with Sanders, Easter and Bandy families in the area. I have found out quite a bit on John H. I also found out George W. Wyse lived in Trumann. My ggrandfather is Andrew J. Wyse. We are trying to find proof as to how these men were all related to one another. Thompson(born in Tenn. 1839-1841) he died some time between 1880-1882 , actually i think he died between June 1881-Feb.1882. The oral history i have been told is that he was killed by a train at Bethel -south of Harrisburg,-while his wife was pregnant with his last son -who was my gr grandfather (Jodie Lee or Joseph T. Thompson DOB 2/27/1882-died nov. 1959). I am trying to find out what happened to Joseph and his children. In the 1900 census of poinsett co. My grgrgrandmother-Josephs wife (Rachel M.) is listed as haveing given birth to 7 children -with only 3 living in 1900. One of the 7 are never listed in any records-the others - besides my grgrandfather and his sister Sophia Spencer-born AR.1979-died 1955, are as follows... Willie W. born in Tenn 1868, Allie-tenn 1871, Sarah A.-tenn. 1873, Annie AR.1875.
An obit on any of these names would be great-especially the one on Joseph H. thompson.

Searching for anyone who may have known or known of Sherman (T.S.) and Fannie L. Green of Poinsett County, Greenfield Township who might be able to tell me the story behind the two children the Greens adopted (took in) in late 1916 or early 1917.

My Grandmother, Laura Bell Steelman and her brother Robert James were given up for adoption after their mother Florence Fisher Steelman died in England, AR in Nov. 1916 and their father James Steelman left for parts unknown. There was also an infant sister, Mary Jo that was given to a nurse from Kentucky.

The Greens may have run a boarding house at one time and were also in the grocery business, possibly owning a store on Speedway.

Can anyone shed any light on how this adoption took place when the Greens lived about 130 miles from where the children were in England, AR? The children were never formally adopted and nobody in the family knows the circumstances of their adoptions.

Also looking to see if there is a connection between Mr. Sherman Green who was from KY and the lady (supposedly a single woman, a nurse) from KY who adopted the infant Mary Jo.

Any help greatly appreciated!

My mother was Mary Elizabeth Barker and she went to Harrisburg High School before she married my dad Walter Crosby in Feb. 1948 at age 16 yrs old. She died in March 2000 and when I was going thru some old pictures I found pictures with these names on them. Does anyone reconize them or know anything about them? If any one has any pictures of my mother I would love to have a copy...

Thanks, Sheila

Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
Looking for any link to my g grandmother Laura Belle White, born to William White and Lockie Perkins in 1890 in Marked Tree, Poinsett Co., AR She married a man with the last name of Chisom and then remarried to Bolton and had my grandmother Alice Irene Bolton born in 1927...it appears that within this time period she moved around somewhat as my grandmother was born in Craighead Co. but appears she did stay in Arkansas for some time. If anyone has any information to these surnames, please contact me at flatland@newnorth.net Thanks.
