Would you please share the info. you have on the McCracken family of Poinsett co. AR. 1880 census of Poinsett co. shows McCrackens living in greenfield. Also there are McCrackens in Marion, and Creighaed cos. there seems to be a relationship of some kind between Jeff McCracken of Creighead and John McCracken of Poinsett.they were from Va. per 1880 census , very hard family to track down.

Does William Grant have brother named August Grant? If so, I found William Grant age 44 living St. Louis Independent City, Missouri. On 1920 census, Bald Knob, Arkansas list William L. Grant wife Ora B. list son named Marshall B. Grant age 12. This would be about the right age for Marshall. Marshall's mother name is Effie. Effie and William had 2 children: Marshall L and Jackson Grant, Jr.
William and Ora listed with one child named Edith age 2 months on 1920 census.
Reason I think this maybe William on 1930 cenus living with his brother, Hattie Condra McCulley moved to St. Louis, Independent City, Missouri.
I am doing research on a female native american that possibly lived in Poinsett. Does anyone know what race a native american was considered on the 1880 thru 1930 census? Would they have been listed as white, black, mulatto or colored? Were there any distinctions between them and any other person on these census?

Thanks for any information on this subject.

Info on Franklin Biggs and Allice Swartz Gordon Biggs

I am searching for any information on Franklin E. Biggs (born June, 1864 in Illinois) and his wife Allice or Alice (born approx, 1878 state unknown) Gordon. They were married in Jonesboro on March 17, 1907. The marriage license states that Allice's name was Mrs. Allice Gordon. Apparently she was married to an unknown Gordan before Franklin Biggs.

During my research, I found that Allice's maiden name might have been Swartz and that she was native american.

Franlin and Allice had one child, William Biggs (born 1910 in Arkansas). After that, I can't find any information on any of them.

It was rumored that Allice was placed in the Arkansas State Hospital for Mental Diseases. In 1920 and 1930, the was an Allice Biggs in the hospital. I have no proof that it is her.

After she was placed in the hospital, Franklin sent his son William to live with one of his (Franklin's) brothers.

Franklin's father was William Green born August, 1836 in Illinois and his mother was Mary born November, 1847 in Virginia.

Any help on Franklin, Allice, and William would be wonderful.
John J. Field(s), the original name was Field, was born c 1821 (1850 census) probably in Bedford Co VA. He was the son of Andrew Field and Frances (Franky) Holland of Bedford Co VA. Andrew moved to Williamson Co TN between 1824 and 1826. He died in Williamson Co Oct 1 1853. Franky then moved to Grimes Co TX to be with her oldest son, Drury Field and she died there 1860-1870. I believe I have found Ellen Field in the 1880 census. A Field (no first name) but age 44 (this fits the 1860 census when she is 24) born TN father born KY mother born AL is found living in the household of J.E.A. Sharp in Cross Co AR. She has with her a female A. B. Field age 3 born AR, father born AR and mother born AL. This all fits Ellen Field. It appears this A. B. is her granddaughter as you state that Alice died 1878. Why this child does not appear as Warren in unknown. This Field is a boarder and listed as a widow. If you have Ancestry.com this record is AR, Cross Co, Coldwater TWP, ED64, page 139A. I have no doubt but that this is Ellen.

Thank you for the source of the "Widow of J. J. Field" quote. I have found it at Ancestry.com. I also need to give you the source of the marriage of Eleanor Taylor and Francis M. Couch. It is Alabama Marriage Collection, 1800-1969 found at Ancestry.com. I have looked up information on the Eastern Arkansas Biographies and Historical Memoirs and it was published in 1890. As you say, it appears the bios cover people to 1885. Does this mean the research was done in 1885? This appears to be a large work and obviously took more than a year to research and it would be difficult to determine the date of the research on the Taylor family. But it does lock in a death date for John J. Field for before 1890. Of course, his death could have been a great deal before this time. Do you know if Ellen and John Field had any children? If this 1865 marriage of Ellen Hydrick and John Field was about these same people, then Ellen and John in the 1870 census had been married 5 years and there were no children for them in this census. And, Ellen is listed as 37 in 1870 and perhaps they never had children. I just wish this family could be located in the 1880 census. This would help answer some of these questions.
I have found where Eleanor Taylor married Francis M. Couch Oct 6 1851 in Limestone Co AL. According to the 1860 census, she was 24 or would have been 15 or according to the 1870 census, she was 37 or would have been 18 when married. She was a widow by 1860. If Alice was her only child and Alice was born c 1853 there is the good possibility that Francis Couch died early in the marriage as there should have been more children. Considering the dates, there is the possibility that Ellen married a Hydrick and became a widow again and was that Ellen that married John J. Field in 1865. If you wish to know more about John J. Field I will be glad to share. Carole

I have found the Taylor family in the 1850 census living in Limestone Co AL. Eleanor is a daughter living in the home. In the 1860 census in Poinsett AR, the William and Rachel Lavesque ages 67 & 70 living in the home of Joseph and Susan Taylor are Susan's parents. The name is spelled Lavesque, Lavesque, LaVesgue. This is off the subject but I have found a good site concerning the Lavesque family; http://genforum.genealogy.com/levesque/messages/1225.html. Getting back to John J. Field. In the 1870 census it states he was from TN but in the 1860 & 1850 census it states he was born VA. He married first Catherine Curtis Jul 16 1839 in Williamson Co TN. If Ellen/Eleanor Taylor married a Couch and then married John J. Field then who could the Ellen Hydrick be that married John J. Field Nov 30 1865 in Cross Co AR? Cross is a neighboring county to Poinsett. I will need to do some more research on this and get back with you. Carole

I am working on John J. Field who was in Poinsett Co AR in the 1850, 1860 & 1870 census. He was first married to Catherine Curtis. This family was from TN. In the 1870 census he is with a new wife Ellen. In searching the marriages of AR at Ancestry.com I find that he married Ellen Hydrick, Nov 30 1865 in Cross Co AR. Could Ellen be a widow and she had been Ellen Taylor? John and Catherine had the following children: Andrew, Benjamin, Wesley, James, Caroline, Isabella & Columbus. No one is this family has been located in the 1880 census. I am working on John J. Field and have more information. Carole in Virginia

Do you have the names of John J. Fields' parents and his birth date? If so, can you share that with me.

Patricia

Thank you so much for the marriage date. I didn't have it. Never thought it would be in Limestone Co., Ala. Her family was in the 1850 Limestone Co., Ala. census and then by the 1860 census they were in Poinsett Co., Ark. The article I spoke of on Jos. Taylor came from Eastern Arkansas Biographies and Historical Memoirs. You can go to google and type the title in and it will pull it up. I don't know exactly when it was written but I'm told that the bios cover to 1885. That narrows down their death dates a bit anyway. Its possible that Ellen did marry a Mr. Hydrick between Couch and Fields. If she did she sure was a busy lady.

I'll let you know if I find anything else.

Patricia

I'm sorry, I was wrong. Ellen's daughter was ALICE Couch. Alice Couch and her mother Ellenor are living with her parents but Ellenor is listed as Taylor. Then is 1870 Ellen is with John J. Fields along with Alice Couch. So these two Ellen's must be the same person!

Patricia

All I know about the people I'm looking for is that Ellen (Ellenor?) Taylor born ca. 1835 Tn. married first Francis M. (Marion?) Couch and married second John J. Fields. Dates unknown. Ellen died after the 1870 census and I can't find any record after that. John J. Fields was born ca. 1820 Tn. acc. to the 1870 census. Her parents were Jos. and Susan Ann (Levesque) Taylor from Poinsett and Cross Co., Ark. Ellen had a daughter Ellen born ca. 1858 who married Jefferson Warren (date unknown). The daughter Ellen died 11 Jan 1878 in Cherry Valley, Ark.

The bio of Joseph Taylor mentions surviving children and one is Ellen, the widow of J.J. Fields, and old settle of this county.

Thats all I have right now. Any additional you could add would be greatful!

Patricia

It has been my experience that there is 'no difference', generally speaking,
except that on most census years where the place of birth is given as in the
USA, it may mean that they are Native American. As far as I know there is no
set rule as to race.such as white, black, mulatto or colored, etc.
Amos
