Alonzo Madison Bowen

Alonzo Madison Bowen, one of the leading planters of Bowen, Missouri
Township, Pike County, was born near Lawrenceville, Ga., October 6, 1855.
His parents, John J. and Mary L. (Cooper) Bowen, natives of Georgia, had a
family of six children: Lorenza A., Dilmus L., Columbus L., Alonzo M.,
Jefferson D. and Nancy C. The father was engaged in tilling the soil in
Georgia until 1856, when he emigrated to Arkansas, locating in Pike County,
where he made his home until his death in 1862. He was a member of the
Masonic fraternity, and took a deep interest in the welfare of society
generally. He participated in the late war, serving under Capt. Speer. Both
he and wife were members of the Baptist Church; she died in Texas in 1863.
The subject of this short sketch was reared in Clark County, receiving his
education at the private schools, and at the age of sixteen began doing for
himself by hiring out as a farm laborer. He also made three trips to Texas.
August 12, 1879, he was married to Miss Cornelia A. Hewitt, a native of
Clark County, Ark., and to this union have been born five children, viz.:
Callie R., Enos L., Darthie D., John F., Quincy A. Mr. Bowen owns ninety-six
acres of good land, fifty acres under an excellent state of cultivation; his
farm is well stocked. He is a member of the Wheel, and has held the office
of clerk and sentinel of the same. Both he and wife are worthy members of
the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and take an earnest interest in the
welfare of the community in which they reside.
____________________________________________________________________________

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas, 1890, Pike County,
page 316.
____________________________________________________________________________

File and design by David Kelley, 1997.

I'm looking for any information concerning my ggrandmother, Sarah Burns Williamson, b 1795, and who died August 1882 at Rock Creek, in Pike County, Arkansas, according to the Williamson family bible. At the time of her death, she was living with her son, Dr. Algernon Williamson, and wife Martha (Mattie), and their family.

Any information about her would be appreciated, as I have not been able to find much of anything about her, or where
she would have been buried. Any ideas exactly where "Rock Creek" was, and where the cemetery would be?

Blount Bullock (b. 23Mar1810/Edgecombe Co, NC – d. 31Aug1885/Pike or Howard Co, AR)

This Blount Bullock was a son of “Balaam” Bullock who I believe is descended from my Bullock family line that originated in the 1600’s in old Surry/Sussex County, VA. Blunt Bullock was in Pike County, AR by the 1850 census and lived his remaining adult life in that part of Pike County that became Howard County in 1873. I’d very much like to correspond with any descendants of this Blunt Bullock .. especially any male Bullock descendants. I would especially like to hear from a Pike County, AR poster whose handle is "xrysta". Please contact me charlesbullock42@gmail.com

My great grand aunt, Martha A. Foster, shows up in the 1880 Pike Co. Census as Martha A. Whisenhunt. She has two little girls, Alice 6yrs., and Fannie 1yr. She is living with the girls and her younger brother (who is listed as Jacob Forester) and her mother (listed by maiden name - Sarah Ridge).

The family is living smack in the middle of a bunch of Whisenhunts, including: Mary Jane (45 - widow) and her family; and John J. (50), his wife Margaret (43) and their family.

My assumption is that Martha was married to a Whisenhunt sometime between 1870 and 1880, and that she was widowed.

I think some folks from this same Whisenhunt family have posted here. I'm looking for any information on Martha's husband, Martha's mother, Martha's children, and certainly, Martha herself.

MCG

I'm reposting this because my last post was "hijacked" by people looking for other Whisenhunts.
I am looking for the burial places of Rebecca Gossett Henton (wife of H. C. Henton) and Rebecca Waldrop Thompson (wife of Alexander Thompson). Rebecca Henton is last seen in the home of her daughter Sarah E. Rush and her husband Andrew J. Rush in 1900. Rebecca Thompson was last located in the 1880 census, however other family members have said she lived until July 4, 1907. I have not been able to confirm this fact. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Obituaries, death records, bible records, cemetery indexes, tombstone photos, ANYTHING!! These ladies are both very illusive.

Lurah Wall b. 1872 wife of Hilman Wall

Can anyone share information on Lurah Wall, probably born Dec. 15, 1872 in Arkansas. She was second wife of Isaac Hilman Wall. Lurah and Hilman were probably married in 1901 after his first wife (Alwilda Dickson) died in 1900. Lurah is listed on 1910 and 1920 censuses with Hilman in Missouri Township. Hilman died in 1924, and I cannot find her in 1930. She had a daughter Bertie who married Hilman's son Allen. I believe Lurah is buried in Holdenville, OK with her daughter and son-in-law (stepson) under the name of Lurah Hill. I would like to know Lurah's maiden name and how she became Hill later. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I am looking for death and burial information for my 2nd great grandmother Rebecca Ann Thompson. The last time I located her was in the 1880 census listed as Ann Thompson, widow, with her children including my great grandmother Zilphia (Thompson) Henton. Other Thompson researchers have listed a birth date for her as Feb. 1, 1829 but didn't quote source of date. They also list a death date for Rebecca as July 4, 1907 but again no source documentation. Any additional information such as cemetery, obituary, bible record or ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Need information on Rev. W.G. Hilton

The Rev W.G. Hilton performed the marriage ceremony for my Great Grandparents Rev. W.A. Fitzgerald of Point Cedar and Louise Jane Dillard of Amity, AR. The ceremony took place on Sept. 11, 1879. I think the ceremony may have been at the old Westlyan Chapel Methodist Church at Point Cedar but I have no real evidence of that. I'm trying to trace Rev. W.G. Hilton in hopes that I can learn at which church he may have been a minister. I know that my Great Grandmother Louisa may have attended the old Bethel Baptist Church near Glenwood, AR but one of her sisters and a brother (I think) were members of the Wesleyan Chapel Methodist Church. She met W.A. Fitzgerald when she attended church with her sister in 1878 or 79.
I appreciate any information to lead me to the identification of Rev. Hilton and his church.
Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
Hello all, I am looking for more info on the Smith families that lived in Pike county from the 1850's through the early 1900's. My Great -Grandfather( William Taylor Smith married to Carrie Gertrude Grice )owned and operated a General Store in the Daisy-Delight areas in the late 1800's. Somewhere near 1890 I beleive , William and Carrie got married when she was quite young (10 years old) The 1890 Census shows them living in white township with Her age listed as 23 with her oldest son Being Morgan Smith at the age of 12 at the time of the census with her being shown as married for 13 years. Now W.T Smith's father was Morgan Joseph Smith a Tanner by Trade, married into the Barton families. I have photographs of these folks in that time era With Him Driving a wagon in the Hills of arkansas there and thier Family potrait of him and his wife. Anyone still living in the Pike County area with any knowledge of The Smith Family or Mrs. Carrie Gertrude Grice(Smith) Please contact me . I am especially interested in finding more about Carrie Grice . They are both Buried in a Cemetary close to Delight , I have been there but the name escapes me know.
Thanks Alvin Holt

Hi Jan,

I tried to email you, however the graphic that RootsWeb uses to indicate your email address was difficult to read and the mail came back. I did make another reply under my original post about the Conatser Grave in Pike Co., however I suspect you may not have seen it since it's sort of buried now. Here was my request in the email:
See : http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p...

Hello Jan,

I wondered if you wouldn't mind letting me know if and
when he gets (the archeologist) this recorded. A GPS latitude and longitude would be a REAL benefit to
me in finding the site. I have a general idea where it is, but I'm a bit uneasy
about heading off in the woods without a good bearing since I'm not in the best of
health. Sandy at the County Clerks office has been in touch with someone there that
says he will let me in the property, so I've got that taken care of.

Thanks Again!
Brian Sherrod
I am working on a hunch that Thomas R. Garner of Pike Co. may have been my gggrandmother's father. According to census info, he was born in 1802 and shows up on the 1840 and 1850 Pike Co. census. There are some girls listed in the 1840 census (no names) that had either moved out or possibly died by the time the 1850 census was taken, so their names are unknown to me. If anyone has information on who his children were, I would really appreciate hearing from you. My gggrandmother's name was Mary L. or Mary S., born about 1831.

Thanks

Roy Henderson,b.1907, Ar living in 1930 Pike Co., AR

Hi, I'm trying to find out if Roy Henderson, age 23 in Murfreesboro, Pike Co., AR 1930, marr. a girl by the name of Mabel Clemons,b.abt 1915, Ms. Mabel is a 1st cousin to my grandmother and various relatives have told me that she met and marr. a Roy Henderson who was a traveling salesman and preacher. The Roy that I found living in Pike Co., AR was a salesman for his father who was a retail grocery merchant. My only problem is how did they meet? Mabel was living in rural Drew Co.,AR, quite a distance away in 1930. I also found a marr. record for a Mabel Clemons to a Roy Henderson in Pulaski Co.,AR ( Little Rock area) on 7 Oct 1933. I could run with the marr. record since Mabel had a brother living in Lonoke Co., AR, one county over from Pulaski and so she could have been visiting him when she met Roy.
Then, I found a Mabel Henderson in the SS records who was born in about 1915 and died in the Murfreesboro, Pike Co.,AR area. So, I'm trying to do a magic act here and tie all of these clues together. lol

Is there anyone out there working on the John and Annie Henderson family that was living in Pike Co., AR in 1930?
I would appreciate any info to help me figure out if all of this fits.

Thanks, Dawn D.

Anyone know where this is? I can not locate a "Dead Cow Road" or a "Vaughn Creek" on newer maps. It also appears that this Noel David does not own this land any longer according to current parcel info.

If you can tell me how to locate on newer topo's, etc., please email me. Thanks in advance!

From:
"Cemetery Records Pike County, Arkansas"
Copyright 1986 by Pike County Homemakers Extension - used with permission.
page 94.

Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by Tim Kirkham - rabraine@wmni.net
CONASTER FAMILY CEMETERY

Located 1/8 mile West of Dead Cow Road, near International Paper Co.
Land North of Delight.

Name Age Death
--------------------------------------------------
CONASTER, Mary L.
Alton A. Wright son of Edmond T. Wright

Hello , I am looking for any information on Alton A. Wright from Pike county, AR, born 1906, son of Edmont T. Wright and Bedie Bell Wood. His brothers and sisters were Maxine, Ollie, Edmond, Addis, Ila and Curtis. The family is listed on the Pike Co. 1930 census. I am trying to confirm if this is the same Alton Wright who was married to Ruby Ethel Ward from Gillham, AR in 1926. Please reply if this family sounds familiar to anyone. Alton is my brick wall. Any information would be greatly aprreciated.
