How do you know that her daughter married Z.J. Harkins? There were several Margaret Bells at that time. I have traced my great grandmother Margaret to Rebecca Bell per the 1930 census. Could you elaborate a little for me as to how you came to that conclusion other than the marriage census? Thank you. :)

Rebecca died in 1863 and, although there is no marker, she is said to be buried in Nathan Cemetery in Pike County, AR. Her daughter Margaret married Z.J. Harkins in 1877 in Pike County according to Arkansas County Marriages 1837 - 1944. I don't show any information for Daniel or the other children.

Sherrod W. Neal and Mary Allen Blevins are my GGgrandparents. Their son Andrew Jackson Neal married Florence Cook. Their daughter, Avis Neal was my Grammy

I have been researching details on Mary Allen's death (cause, exact date, etc) for years. Not much luck. In the meantime, I have come in contact with a wonderful group of descendants/cousins on the internet and through Facebook.

I have been researching Sherrod and Minnie Mack's family for years. I have been in touch with a descendant of another of Sherrod and Minnie through their daughter Mattie May Neal.

If either of you send me a PM through this board with a way to contact me, I would be glad to share info with you and hope you will share with me.

Have a great weekend.
Vicki Roberts

I am looking for death/burial information on the following people:
Rebbecca Ann (Waldrop) Thompson and her husband Alexander Thompson. I have seen information in a number of family trees that states Rebecca died July 4, 1907 but have seen no documentation that would support that information. I have no death information on Alexander other than he last appeared in the census for Harris County Georgia in 1870. His widow appears in the 1880 census for Clark, Pike, Arkansas with some of her children. Thanks for any help that might come my way!!

Hi Charlotte. I did get in touich with Darlene and she informs me that there were two different fires at the Courthouse so a lot of records were destroyed. The grave I am looking for is for James W. Wilcox who died in Antoine in December 1879.

His daughter is Phoebe Johnson and the son-in-law is William Jack Johnson. In the 1880 census, his two sons were still there but his wife Mary had returned to VA with their three kids.

Let me ask a question and see if maybe I can back into this instead of going forward. Does PCAHS have any records of "cemeteries" on private farms? For some reason I have not thought of that until now.

Thanks.

George Basden

I am sorry that it has been difficult to contact us. We are a few volunteer workers and sometimes we get sidetracked with many requests. If you will give us the name of your 3rd great grandfather, we will try to locate the land that he lived on. Also, need the names of his daughter and son-in-law. It would be helpful to have as much info as we can get. Documents are very scarce back in the early days.
Sincerely,
Charlotte McCauley

I have tried on a couple of occasions to contact the PCHS with no success. I am trying to find the location of a farm around Antoine, AR. It is believed this farm is the location of my 3rd great grandfather's grave. I am simply trying to locate and get permission to either photograph the gravesite or the farmland. He died in Dec 1879 and there are no records of his burial in any cemetery around Antoine. The farm was owned by his daughter and son-in-law. After his death my great grandmother and three children returned to VA. His two sons from a previous marriage stayed on the farm.
Thanks.
George

Sherrod Neal and Mary Blevins are my gg-grandparents. My grandmother (their granddaughter) is still alive and lives with me. As far as I know, Mary Blevins died...they did not divorce...and Minnie and Sherrod did not divorce. I have information from another relative that Mary Blevins was actually Mary ALLAN (or Allen?) Blevins and she was Cherokee indian. A relative in Arkansas has been to Tehlahqua (sp?), Oklahoma to a big Indian genealogy center to try to work on the Mary Blevins line. I'm not sure what she found. Also, in the 1900 census you will find Sherrod and Mary's sons, John Neal and William T. Neal, living as boarders with a Joseph ALLEN family in Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation, Township 6, District 114. I haven't researched this any further. They are just clues.

I am also curious to know Minnie's maiden name.

You can find Sherrod's parents on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US census. His father is Isaiah Neal born in Kentucky around 1820. His mother is Elizabeth born in Tennessee around 1825.

George W. Neal was my grandmother's uncle. She is still alive, and according to her as well as another descendant, Tom, Dick and Harry were identical triplets and those were their real names. Harry was killed in a car accident at about age 16. Tom and Dick died several years ago. Mildred Allen married a DICKEY and died in Feb. 2011.

I attached a scan of a pamphlet from one of George W's election campaigns with a photo of himself and the triplets.

L/U needed for George David Baker birth in Nathan, Pike Co., Arkansas

Is there anyone who can l/u the birth record of George David Baker 18 May 1881 Nathan, Arkansas? I believe that his birth record will lead me to his mother's maiden name. I have been looking for Mary "Margaret" Bell from Pike Co., Ark but I recently came across a record that showed her name to be Effort. I don't think that her mother was married, which means her last name was Bell. So she could have taken on her father's name Effort shortly before she got married. If anyone lives locally and can look up George's birth record, I would appreciate it. Thanks

Pike County Records

I'm aware that the county courthouse has burned a couple of times, with consequent loss of records. I wonder, though, if any _court_ records, particularly wills, exist for the years around 1840.

The reason I ask is that my 3ggpa's estate quietly passed to his son, which would argue that there was a will - otherwise there'd be some mention of the estate in the tax records for the following year.

3ggpa was James G. Melson, died ca 1839 in Pike County. His son, my 2ggpa, was Solomon Melson. All of James land is known to have passed to Solomon, as did family responsibilities. See "The Gems" and www.pcahs.org for details.

Anyway, what, if any, court records might exist for the years around 1840?

Thanks.

Bob Melson
Hello Michelle:
Just found this query and hope that you are still watching it as I do have some info for you.
Josuah Kirby, along with Hampton Lietze and two of my relatives, Elihu and brother Jeremiah Morphew, were on furlough from the Civil War and were out clearing some land that they hoped to farm when they were attacked by "bushwhackers" and robbed, beaten and killed. Elizabeth J. McCauley (my husband's gggrandmother)and her sister Isley Horne and another woman, dug a big hole at the Mt. Zion Cemetery and buried all four boys. Mt Zion Cemetery is now called Valley Grove and on the east side of Kirby, AR. All four boys were in the same Company H, AR Infantry in the Civil War. The day of their death was April 16, 1864.

My inbox was atrocious for a long time, but I'm finally cleaning it out.
Anyway, not sure if you can help me or not. I am looking for a marriage record (or just about ANY record!) of my great aunt, Blanche Smith. I've found her on the 1900 Wallaceburg, Nevada Co, census, and the 1910 Missouri Twp, Hempstead Co. Census. I noticed that Pike Co is above both of those counties.
She was born about 1892 (Not sure of county or city, but her brother was born in 1890 in Prescott, Nevada Co.) She was 18 in 1910, and just disappeared after that. I am hoping she got married, but have had no luck finding her marriage record. There was a Blanche Smith who was 18 and resided in Nevada Co, who got married in 1910 in Miller Co, but she was black, and my Blanche was white...
Any nugget at all would be wonderful!
Thanks again,
Loralee

William Jordan Brewer was her father and Henderson was her grandfather. Henderson settled in Pike county Arkansas. Henderson had 2 wives first Bertha White and then I have his second wife as Elizabeth. Hendersons Father is Oliver Brewer born 1785 Hillsbordist NC died 13 Oct 1834 , murfreesboro pike county arkansas. His wife was Mary or Polly Henderson. There is a lot of things written about these familys you can trace them back a long way. I would love to get any information on your family. These families seem to use the same names over and over again it is hard to keep it all straight. Thanks.

I am seeking the ancestors of my great grandfather George Lincoln Ashcraft(1892). Mother is Sarah Anna Weldon (1862)and a sister Martha E (1897)I cannot seem to locate their father. I've been told that his name is John Ashcraft but seen the family listed as Ashcroft as well. The year that I was told he passed was 1898, but cannot find them on any census or his death record. Anna appears on the 1900 census in Arkansas living with her father (Nathaniel Green Weldon) with the two kids and listed as a widow.

I believe he died in Arkansas, and was possibly born there as well. My 2nd great grandmother (Sarah Ann Weldon) is seen to go by Anna Ashcraft, however I cannot find the family on the census again until George L Ashcraft appears later alone- I cannot ever again locate Martha E or Anna.

On the 1910 census, George (Lincoln) Ashcraft is seen living with the family of Enoch and Martha Higgins in Le Flore Oklahoma. He appears again in the 1930 census in Missouri, married to Mary Ella Chandler and the name is spelled Ashcroft. It is my belief due to the birth date of the oldest son Edgar, and of Ella and the timeline - that his mother is not Ella Chandler (Ashcraft) but Beulah Higgins (or sister Myrtle) is the mother of this child.

I would like to hear any connections that there might be - there are alot of John Ashcrafts and the Oklahoma records are sub-par... Also would like to know what happened to Anna and if there were any kids from Martha.

The family story is that they lived on a reservation in Indian Territory - Mary Ella Chandler is Cherokee and confirmed on the roll.

I have more info if you want it. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Hello, all,

I am doing research on my 3rd great grandfather (Marion Holcomb) who lived in Caney Fork in Pike County, Arkansas on the 1860 census. I believe that he died while living there and his wife (Caroline Pracilla Young Holcomb) and children moved back to Georgia (where they were originally from) after his death. So I am trying to learn more about where he lived in Arkansas to get a better understanding of what it was like when he lived there.

Caney Fork seems to have been a relatively small area, as the section on the 1860 census is only about 6 pages long. It seems that the community no longer exists today. I'm hoping someone who is local to the area (or well versed in its history) will know more about where exactly Caney Fork was. I have found an area called Caney Valley in Pike County. But I'm not sure if it's the same place where Caney Fork was located.

If anyone is familiar with Caney Fork in the 1850's/1860's, I would love to hear what you know!

Thanks so much for your help.

Jordan

Thanks Jeri. I wonder if John Renfro knew the Bell/Hutson families...Why would there be documentation in this book. There were many...many Cumberland Presbyterian Ministers in my Bell families.
Thanks Again!
Barbara

I have a surprise for both of you. I found in my ancestor John B. Renfro's books, one that lists marriage and children of Robert Bell and Martha Hutson. Married March 6, 1804.
Children William Hutson Jan 17, 1809 is the first child listed and the last one list is Harriet Newel Bell Dec 21, 1821. Contact me for a scanned image of the entire record.

I was happy to see your response here! I am interested in information on his family line and to whom he was married. I have the name "Delilah", but I am not sure that is accurate. Was Tyre an "outlaw"? REally any information that you have would be wonderful. My old username was "amyleigh1204"....
