I am looking for the grave/record of a Civil War casualty that died and was buried in Helena. His name was James Stringer. James Stringer's pension record indicates he was buried with full honors but I don't know what cemetery. Is there an historic cemetery and if so is the info available? Thank you.

Looking for War Between the States records on JOHN J. DYE. He was living in Phillips Co, Ark in the 1860 census with a wife NANCY J. SHACKELFORD. They were married in Monroe Co, Ark in 1852. they had one child Malissa age/2 in 1860.

He is not listed on the 1870 census records but is listed on the 1880 census.

I am not sure if this Malissa is the same daughter that I know of named Orphia Dye who married a Sullivan

In 1860 John is listed as having $44,400.00 real estate and $40,000.00 personal property but by 1880 he had very little.

I lost contact with Harriet Muffoletto, Turner, Deiss ;who lived in Helena, W. Helena area and she also lived in Southaven, Mississippi but I belived she moved back to either Marvell or W. Helena,Ar.

Harriets father was Joe Mufoletto. Harriett first marriage was to Mike Turner and they had two children Debbie and Shelly.

Harriet and Mike Turner divorced and she married Johnny Deiss and they had a son named Johnny Deiss.

Harriets daughter Debbie is a nurse.

Looking at my step-grandmother's death cert. Bertie Alcox-Bennett died 1935 in Hicksville, Phillips Co, AR. Where was Hicksville Township? Is it still there? Also is Brickell Funeral Home still in Marvell?

Bertie had a sister name Anna, father's name was Bert Alcox. Both Bertie and Anna were married to Charley Bennett.

Coffee Creek Cemetery

Can anybody tell me anything about Coffee Creek Cemetery, in Phillips Co, Arkansas? My great-great grandmother, Virginia Pope Gorman, died in Coffee Creek on 17-Apr-1880, according to her obituary, and I suspect that she may be buried there (possibly with her husband Henry Gorman).

Are there any transcriptions of this cemetery's gravestones, or has anybody been there who can describe the place to me? Is there anybody who lives near the cemetery who would be willing to look for their gravestones for me?

Are there any other cemeteries in the vicinity of Cypress Township (near Cypert) where people would have been likely to be buried around 1879-1880?

Murder of Luther Nolan

I have recently obtained a death certificate from the Arkansas Vital Statistics Dept. on my granddfather Luther Nolan. It states that he was murdered at the Chicago Mills Lab Company in Helena on March 13, 1927. Though the document is difficult to read, it states. Cause of death: wound of the heart (Murder). It gives his age as 28yrs old and that he was a Laborer. It appears that he is buried at the Horner Cemetary intermit: March 20, 1927. My mother Lillian Nolan was only 4 yrs old at the time of his death and she has since passed on. I am looking for additional information on this event as well as any decendants.

A.J. Gorman (brother), b. c1858 in Alabama
Paul Gorman (son), b, c1875, possibly in Phillips Co., AR
E.C. Gorman (son), b. c1879, in Arkansas

Henry and Virginia were married on 28-Dec-1870 in Colbert Co., Alabama, and moved shortly thereafter to Phillips Co. AR. Henry, Paul (listed as P.G. Gorman on the census) and E.C. are listed on the 1880 U.S. census in Cypress Township, Phillips Co. Confusingly, Henry is listed in an obituary from his former Alabama hometown newspaper as having died on 20-Jan-1879 in Helena, Phillips Co., the year before he was listed on the census.

The most important piece of info I am seeking is whether Paul Gorman was indeed Henry & Virginia's son and did indeed live in Phillips County, as I am not 100% sure that the "P.G. Gorman" listed on the census is him. I am also interested in making sense of the discrepancy with Henry's death date. Any information on this family would be most appreciated.

Paul had left Phillips Co. by 1900, so the time frame of interest is 1870-1900.

Gilbert Van Vlake, 50 years old, ill since last Friday, died late this afternoon in the Helena Hospital following hemorrhage of the brain. Mr. Van Vlake had been taken to the Helena Hospital late Tuesday afternoon from the home of a sister at Lexa, where he had been working when he became ill. He was the father of Roy Van Vlake, star center on the Helena high school football squad, besides five other sons and an adopted daughter. They are, Roy, H.L., S.C, G.E. and R. L. Van Vlake and W. R. Sigman, a step son, and Miss Beatrice Van Vlake.
He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Cassie Campbell, of Lexa, and Mrs. N.T. Bass, of Helena, and one step-brother John Sylar, of Helena. Mr. Van Vlake had lived in Helena practically all his life. He was a machinist. Funeral services will be held from the family residence, 231 Bisco Street,
at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon, with Rev. C.E. Newton, pastor, of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Hill cemetery with Cunningham and Haraway in charge of all arrangements.

Searching for biographical information on Sylvanus Phillips who came to the mouth of the St. Francis River from Virginia in 1700's, founded city of Helena and had county named for him. Birth, death, place of burial? He is supposedly in Goodspeed's Biographies of Eastern Arkansas. Does anyone know where a copy of this is available?
There is nothing available on him on any Phillips County website.

Looking for Obituary for Mozel Phillips who died in St Edwards Hospital in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas in 1964. She had two daughters, but my friend only remember the name Pam. I did find a Mozel Phillips who died in Midland, Texas 9 Sep 1961, but my friend saw her in the hospital shortly before she died.

There is a tree that gives George's married to a Eliza Vasseur in abt 1861 but who was his wife the mother of Alice? I have been looking a long time for the answer with no results. The only "clue" I have on the William WALKER I am searching for is from his son, Richard Henry WALKER's probate from Harrison County, TX in 1853. John Jenkins was serving in the Union Army when he became ill and was hospitalized in Helena, AR. He died there and was buried in Helena. According to his military record affidavits, his son, Chelsely Jenkins, also died and was buried in Helena.

I would love to know more about the hospital or more importantly, where he could be buried in Helena, if anyone can help with that.

Elizabeth O’Shields, the second daughter of Isaac O’Shields and Jarvey Nixon was born ca 1831 in South Carolina. In 1844 the family moved to Phillips Co, AR. In the 1850 Census for St. Frances Twp, Phillips Co, AR she is shown as Betsy, age 19, living with her parents.

In the 1850 Census for Planters Twp, Phillips Co, Thomas Kibby, age 13, is shown living in the household of Johnson Blankenship.

In the 1860 Census for Planters Twp, Phillips Co, Elizabeth (shown as E.M. Kibby), age 26, is shown living with her husband Thomas Kibby, and their 1 year old son Isaac Kibby. Her brother Thomas N. O’Shields, age 21 is living in the same household.

I can find no listing for Thomas or Elizabeth in the 1870 Census.

In the 1880 Census for L’Auguille Twp, Phillips Co, Elizabeth Kibby, age 48, widowed, and her daughter Jinnie Kibby, age 16, are living in the household of her brother Richard L. O’Shields. Living in the same household are her sister, Jane (O’Shields) Carter, age 44, also widowed, and her 2 children, Gauff Carter age 18 and Joseph Carter, age 18.
I have found no later records of Elizabeth or her children Isaac and Jinnie. I theorize that Thomas Kibby and Thomas Carter (husband of Jane) were killed in the civil war but have found no records. I would like to contact anyone that knows anything about these families.

He married Mary Ida Davidson, d/o John Davidson and Margaret Hart, 1 Feb 1885, in Phillips Co. She was born 28 Aug 1864, in AR, and died 21 Sep 1946 in Los Angeles, CA. They had 6 children, Lottie Berry, Maggie May, Mable Goff, William Felex, Ethel Bertie, and Kate Garnet. Lottie Berry, born 24 Dec 1885, married Benjamin Kirkwood Noble. He was born 10 Dec 1881 in Iowa.

William Berry O’Shields is shown in the 1860 Census living with his parents, in Planters Twp, Phillips Co, AR, and in the 1880 Census living with his brother Isaac in L’Auguille Twp, Phillips Co, AR.

Mary Ida O’Shields (a widow) is shown in the 1920 Census living with her daughter, Ethel B. O’Shields in San Diego, CA, and in the 1930 Census, with Ethel, living in Los Angeles, CA.

Young Memphis Woman Dies After Beating.
Memphis, Jan 5, 1953. A 24-year old Arkansas beauty, brutally slugged as she walked along a dark street Fri., died late last night.
She was Miss Mary McKnight daughter of Mr. & Mrs. F. R. McKnight of Helena, Ark. She came here about three months ago & had been working as a secretary in a department store.
Ploice said they were never able to question the girl about her assailant. She underwent brain surgery for a fractured skull Fri. night & remained in a semi-coma until death.
McKnight, owner of a Helena plywood & veneer factory, flew here from Indianapolis to join his wife at their daughter's bedside.
The young blonde was found sprawled beneth a hedge bordering a shadowy sidewalk in a residential district Fri. night. Her rifled purse was nearby.

John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!

Lemon Powell son of Henry and Amelia Montgomery Powell married Rosetta Jones daughter of Cato and Zilphia Jones who lived 2-3 doors from them.
Lemon and Rosetta had two daughters in 1910 ( Mapple and Cleotha). Mapple is shown a few families above in the home of Duncan Mongtmery as his granddaughter (ggrand?) later in the same census Rosetta shows up in her mother Zilphia's home as a widow and only with daughter Cleotha. Lemon had a brother Frank who married Violet.
In 1920 all the Powells (the ones I'm looking for) disappeared from the census). But both Frank and Lemon registered for the Draft listing themselves as married, to these same women and living in Oneida Ar. There is a Mattie B Powell living in the home of Maceo Jones who also lists his mother Zilphia in the household. Maceo is the head of household making Mattie his niece therefore she would be Zilphia's granddaughter, right?
Then in 1930 Myrttllee Oliver is listed with her husband Eugene Oliver with their son, Eugene Jr , my father. Several doors later, Frank and Violet reappear with their family. The only Lemon Powell is a Jr in Monroe County living with his mother Rosetta and her husband Jim Banks.
Would you all say that Mapple, Mattie B and Myrttllee are the same person? I was told by my father (she died in 1932) that her name was Mertise. I found her death record as Merdie.
Is there anyone that can do a marriage lookup for me for 1929? She and Eugene Sr got married there. Eugene's father 's name was Calvin. Eugene may also be listed as William Oliver. I need to know what her real name was.

Hi, In 1930, there was a Charles Clemons,45, Ms, living in Marion twp, Phillips Co., AR with his wife and 2 stepsons. His wife was Lillian D.Long, 23, Ms. I don't know her maiden name, but she had been marr. to an Earl Long and had 2 small boys, Marion, b.abt 1926,AR and Johnnie,b.abt 1927, AR from that marr. Lillian and Earl divorced on 28 Nov 1927 in Phillips Co.,AR, but I don't think that Charles and Lillian marr. until possibly after Nov 1928. If this is my Charles Clemons, he was marr. to an Acenath Fason from Ms, but I think I have found a death date of 29 Nov 1928 on her. I'm still checking on that.
One reason why I think it is possible that this was my Charles Clemons is cause he had a brother, Robert Clemons, living in Phillips Co, along with a few other relatives. Robert moved there between 1910 and 1920 and lived there till his death in 1955, so it is possible that Charlie moved there after his wife died and then met and marr. this Lillian Long.

Is there anyone who could do a marr. lookup for me on Charles Clemons and Lillian D. Long? I haven't found any online marr. records for this time frame for Phillips Co., so if there is someone who wouldn't mind going to the courthouse in Phillips Co and checking it out for me, I would be happy to work out an exchange of some type.

William Scott and his wife Margaret were married 1832 in Ouachita Parish, LA.

The probate records of Charles Whitson d 1844/5 in Franklin Co, AR make it clear that Margaret was the grandmother of Charles' children. Margaret herself states that one of slaves was a gift from her brother William Collins. Her new husband William Scott states that Margaret was lately Margaret Miller prior to their marriage.

In the 1830 Ouachita Census, LA we find Margaret Miller, living next to William Keller.

Charles Whitson married Feliciana Keller in 1828 in Ouachita Co. The probate records note that the mother of the children was named Feliciana. Feliciana is also the name of a town or area in LA.

In 1818 Mrs Keller married John Miller in Feliciana, LA

So Margaret (Collins) 1 Keller 2 Miller 3 Scott who appears in 1850 Phillips Co, AR with her husband William Scott was the mother of Feliciana Keller who married Charles Whitson. Feliciana and Charles both died in Franklin Co, AR.

One child Eliza Ann Whitson married Alfred Coffee 1846 in Phillips Co, AR. Alfred was the admin of the estate after the prior admin James Gilbreath had vacated it (probably to move to Texas). James Gilbreath Sr was the father of Charles Whitson' latest wife (after Feliciana had died).
