There is a Frances Messer 57(W)sons Fletcher 17, John 14,on
1850 Census-Ouachita Co.,Missouri.Living next door is John W. House/Eliza? wife. Another researcher thinks Frances is
the Mother of Eliza House. John W. House & Eliza died be-
tween 1850-1860. On 1860 census, Bosque Co.,TX are the children of John & Eliza House living with Ligon family, also T.J. Edwards family, Benj. James with Geo & John James, and M.J.(Mary Jane) House, Geo. H. House, & Nancy
C. house. Mary Jane was my husbands' G.Grandmother.
Also on same 1860 census is R.F.(Fletcher)Messer, son of
Frances Messer. Fletcher Messer is probably a brother to our Eliza House.
If someone has information on this family, pls. contact me directly at: neldathompson@sbcglobal.net THANKS

I have had no luck finding maps on line so I can match up my ancestor's locations from the census records.
For example, farmers Thomas Patton Simpson and son Thomas Lafayette Simpson are listed in the following records:
(Village, Jackson, Arkansas; 1850 Census)
(Leakes Store District, Jefferson, Ouachita: 1860 census)
(Ten Springs,Marion, Ouachita: 1870 census)
Can you help me find these towns on a modern map? Are there other records you recommend I search to discover where the family farmed and lived? Thank you for your time.

Graves of Eliza Ann Browder and Children

I am searching for information on the graves of Eliza Ann Browder and her 4 children. She and her husband, Martin Van Buren Browder, left Florida and headed to Texas about 1874. Allegedly, Eliza and 4 children died of swamp fever along the way. I can find no documentation, explaination nor reasoning as to why they were in Arkansas. Family lore says that Martin buried his wife and 4 children in a "common grave" and fenced it off with cypress wood. He then continued on to Texas with his young daughter Belle Matilda. No word as to weather or not he left any other defining information on the grave.

Thanks,

Vickie
MBrowder53190@aol.com
I have managed to link Rhoda, wife of Elisha Creech (1860 Census), with Roda Nickelson, wife of William Nickelson (1880 census). In 1880 the Nickelsons have a Thomas Creech (b 1861) in their household. I have now come across a post by Jack Hollis clarifying that this boy is James Thomas Creech, born to Elisha and Rhoda before Elisha died in the CW.
I am searching for information regarding Charlie Silvister Jackson's first wife, I believe her first name was Ada. I was told by my father a living Jackson that my grandfather Charlie was married before he married my grandmother Clara. And that he and his first wife had a son named Thurmon. Charlie and Ada would have married about 1913 and Thurmon would have been born about 1915.

I am also searching for information regarding Harmon P. Jackson's first wife, I believe her first name was Mary. They would have been married sometime between 1860 and 1864. Harmon and his first wife had two sons Harmon P. Jackson, Jr. born about 1864 and Charles H. Jackson born February 10, 1865, both born in Arkansas. They are first listed on the 1870 census record page no. 5; in Ward 7 in the parish of Natchitoches of Louisiana, post office (looks like) Cloutierville.

line 10 thru 14 as follows:

Jackson, H. P. age 45, male, white, Farmer, b: Tenn
Mary (A. or H.) age 44, female, white, House keeping, b: Alabama
H. P. age 7, male, white, b: Arkansas
Charles, age 5, male, white, b: Arkansas
Black, Margarit, age 62, female, white, b: South Carolina

I believe Harmon later married Harriet Ann (Smith)Hodge. He is listed with Harriet on the 1880 census page 13, Albany township in Nevada County, Arkansas line 36 thru 42.

I am also searching for information regarding the Renfro's and Culps.

I would appreciate any information that anyone may have. I am willing to share information I have.

Thanks so much
Oneda
I'm doing some research for a novel and would like to include some stories of some bank robberies in Chidester, Arkansas.

My mother went to college with a woman who always told stories of watching the bank in Chidester get robbed.

I wasn't sure if there was any information in the local newspaper archives, or if anyone knew anything about these incidents.

Unfortunately, I have no information the bank robbers or what bank it was that they robbed. All I know is that it occurred in Chidester, AR.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Captain John Carr, Seminole War, Widow's app for Bounty Land

Hi!

I'm in possession of the "Claim of Widow for Bounty Land" of the widow of Capt. John Carr. The application was made from Clark County, AR by Sarah Ann Stewart(d) Carr. The connection with Ouachita is that Capt. Carr's first wife Martha Shackelford died in Ouachita in 1845 or so.

Capt. John Carr served in the 2nd Seminole War as part of the Alabama Cavalry about 1840-1842. Capt. John Carr was born about 1806 in Oglethorpe County, GA. He is described as having been 5'11", high fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He married Sarah Ann Steward in Calhoun County, AR on January 11, 1852. His first wife was Martha Shackelford. He married Martha in Montgomery County, AL about 1828. Martha died in Ouachita County, AR about 1845. John Carr himself died in Clark County, AR on Dec. 8, 1875.

The interesting part of this application is that there is a note stating that it was consolidated with #92937. That is the number of the land bounty application for my 4th gr grandfather John Carr of Jackson County, AL and later of Carroll County, AR. So the widow's application came to me as part of the land bounty application of my 4th gr grandfather John Carr. To the best of my knowledge, there is no blood relation between Capt. John Carr and my 4th gr grandfather.

If anyone out there is related to Capt. John Carr, I'd be glad to correspond.

Robert Schneider

Florence Beard-Dickenson/ Ouachita Co.

I have a poem written by Florence Beard Dickinson in 1929 that I would like to see passed on to her descendants. It is 6 pages and very sentimental and would be invaluable to her descendants! It states that she was born 12 Sept. 1876 to Wiliam and Frances Beard in Ouachita Co. Arkansas.
She had 3 children but it doesn't mention their names.
The 1880 U.S. Census has her living in Carroll Twp. Ouachita Co., That is near the communities of Smead and Ouachita near the Dallas/ Ouachita Co. line. In 1880 she was listed as 3 years old and living with her parents and siblings: Mary 12, Lillie 9, Burrell 6, and Franklin 1 year old and a 50 year old boarder Jef Shankle. She married Albert Burton Dickinson on 27 Apr. 1902 in AR and died in 1929 and Albert Dickinson died in 1966 near Sparkman, Dallas Co. AR.. I would love for her descendants to get this poem titled "Poem Of My Life" so if any one with an Arkansas connection reads this please check out the names mentioned in this post. Thanks, Kenny Amis/ k.amis@comcast.net
He filed application 2482 Homestead Certificate No 1276 May 20, 1862 for forty acres. The property description is listed as north-west quarter of the south east quarter of section nine, in township twelve south of range eighteen west of the Fifth Principal Meridian in Arkansas. The 1880 United States Federal Census list Limus as a widower with three children. His daughter Caroline was my second Great Grandmother. I am trying to find more information about this family. If the homestead was filed in, 1862 is it possible that he was a freedman. Who was his wife? Where is Behestain Township in relationship to Hwy 7 going toward Amy, Ark?
I cannot find him on the 1870 census. Any information would be helpful and appreciated.
This is an inquiry regarding Alonzo and Sallie Whyte who are interred in Greenwood Cemetery in Ouachita County, Camden, AR. More specifically, I wish to find marriage, death, or location information on two of their children: Alonzo, Jr. who was born around 1916 and Dorothy who was born around 1920, both in Ouachita County, Camden, AR according to the 1920 census. The only other information on either came from a microfilm in the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock--Roll #2 of Camden Miscellaneous Newspapers which had copies of the Camden H.S. yearbook, "Panther's Echo" in the early to mid 1930s. Alonzo, Jr. was in the Camden H.S. Band and Dorothy served as editor of the school newspaper. Any help in tracing these two or their descendants will be most appreciated.

John W. Baker had land patents and a homestead grant in Section 13, Township 14 S, Range 19W in 1855, 1857, and 1876. This would have been about 3 miles from Buena Vista.
My g-grandfather Absalom Baker would go to Camden from Lafayette County once a year in the 1850s and buy groceries. On the way back home he always stopped at Buena Vista to visit his half-brother John. I think this John W. was probably him. Can anyone tell me anything at all about the John W. Baker who had the land around Buena Vista. Anything at all would help, especially where he came from (TN?) and where he went from here.

Murphy (1868) was supposedly born there (I did not find that location but it was posted on the internet.) I know that his parents lived there from about 1860 to 1870's in two places in Quachita county - Smackover and Leaks store 015, Jefferson Township (1860 census). I do not know where Leaks Store is located but I did come through Smackover one time and the library was closed. Any information about these locations would be greatly appreciated.

He moved to Camden in 1886 and lived there through 1930. I believe that he and his wife Sue (Sula?) are most likely buried somewhere near Camden where they lived. Charles was born in 1854.

In 1930, Charles' single brother Joe lived with him. Joe may be buried in the same cemetery.

Thanks for any help.

Tim

James King Family, 1900 Washington Township

Searching for info of JAMES M. & BETTIE (Rogers) KING family that appeared on the 1900 Ouachita County Census of Washington Township. This family had previously lived in Calhoun County, AR. James M. King (born about 1849 in AR) was the son of JOHN T. KING & MARTHA CAROLINE WITHERINGTON of Calhoun County, AR.
_________

James King is last found on 1900 census of Ouachita CO/Washington Twnsp, Family #348, ED 134, page 18 with wife, Elizabeth, and 5 of their 10 children, Jessie (15), Albert (11), Bessie (7), Linnie (4), & Bobie (3). Living nearby were sons, William C. (23) & Garland (17). James (age 52) is shown to have been born in Arkansas in April 1848. All children are shown as born in Arkansas. James was a farmer living on rented land (likely was a sharecropper) and could neither read nor write according to the census record. It is thought that James died shortly after the 1900 census and never moved to Grant Parish in Louisiana with his children. James was also mentioned as "deceased-heirs of" in the 1914 probate of the will of Catherine Caroline King, who had married James' younger brother, William R. King, in 1882. No record of James' death or place of burial has been located to date.

Please contact Bill King at <LynnBillKing@PDQ.net>.
THANKS! James M. King was my Gr-Grandfather.

GRIFFITH Family of Bearden area

I'm trying to "connect the dots" concerning my grandmother's GRIFFITH family cousins, and would appreciate any assistance with a few remaining problems. James L. GRIFFITH and his wife Sarah R. DODSON, along with 5 of their 6 children relocated to Ouachita County from Jackson County, Tennessee about 1901. James died a year later in 1902, and was buried in Salem Cemetery, Bearden. His wife moved to Oklahoma for a time to be with her sons, before returning to Ouachita County and living with her daughter, Matilda Avo FIKE. She died in 1931 and was buried with her husband.

One mystery I have is with their son James Clayborne GRIFFITH. His World War I Draft registration card of 1917 stated that he was married and had 1 child. He died in 1919 and was buried near his parents in Salem cemetery. James is not listed in the Arkansas Death Index, and I have yet to find anything on his wife or child, including the 1920 census. It's possible that his death was war related, perhaps Spanish Influenza - but that is only a guess.

Also buried in Salem Cemetery is a Grace GRIFFITH, who was the daughter of J. O. and Bettie E. HIGGINBOTHAM. Grace died during 1939 in Jefferson County, Arkansas. I believe she might have been the wife of Samuel Clifford GRIFFITH. The 1930 census shows Grace living with her widowed mother, and listed as married about 1920. I have yet to find Samuel Clifford GRIFFITH in either the 1920 or 1930 census. However, his World War II Draft card from 1942 listed that he was living in Jefferson County. If anyone had any information on Grace or her husband, I would appreciate it.

Thank you!

Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
