Hi Joyce, so sorry to have not gotten back to you. The trip was nice, unfortunately we were not able to see the homestead or Bolin Cemetery. Got a great photo of Bolin Mountain, though from my Aunt

was wondering if anyone had a copy of the newton county family history books, and could possibly look up these listings:

BETHANY
Celie, 247, 249
Dora, 33
Jane, 229
Ollie, 33

I am trying to find some info out on these ladies. They are from my GGG Grandfather's third marriage. Anybody that could help me out would be appreciated. I am having a heck of a time coordinating with the newton county resources. Also, was curious if their are any resources in Newton that could help me look up resources on the last name Bethany. I pretty much have most resources, but looking for more stuff on the pierce/charles homer descendant's. Thanks.

Josh Bethany

It covers the first 900 years of Kilgour the place within the context of history and then introduces the next 500 years of Kilgour the people.
Patsy you found me setting here at the computer. The cost of the book is the same for everyone, free, but if you change that that is up to you. I've been involved in this type of work since 1972 and if people had not freely given of themselves all along the way, nothing would have ever been accomplished. So this is my thank you to everyone including those long past. Everything that is in this book except where I indulge myself or my line at the end, applies to everyone. And where I indulge myself on a line of Kilgour to the beginning you will find that it is now believed to be comletely erroneous. Not that the people didn't exist nor that they do not connect any two generations, but rather it is doubtful they connect in that manner based on what I can prove. But in the end, I am convinced we all connect and the y chromosome DNA research should go a long way in proving that. Thanks for you interest. Your book will go out today.

Roy E.
Minervia Ann Wilburn Cheatham is buried in Criner Cem. in Newton Co. AR, as is her daughter Martha Louvina Cheatham Criner. I have read in a List that Minervia's husband Barnett Cheatham, b. 1804, is also buried there, in an unmarked grave. I am wondering if the "unmarked" data actually appears in the survey or listing or book that contains Criner Cemetery interments. I would be grateful if someone with access to the book "Newton County Cemeteries" would look that up for me. Thank you.
Helen Dearing

WOW - I somehow missed this post completely until now! I don't think I got the alert that someone had replied - hmmm.
Anyway, I think the 14-year old Mary L. Whitely is not my g-g-grandmother. We're pretty certain she was born in 1861 in Dinsmore, Newton, AR. She died in 1937 in Monett, Missouri. I do have all the same census records that you posted, and think you will see my g-g-grandmother, Mary E. Whiteley in the 1880 Osage Twp census with mother Caroline Jones Whiteley and her brother, Robert A.J. Whiteley.
Do you have any idea where I might find information on Caroline Jones? Or her parents? I believe very strongly that the Whiteleys and Jone's came west from Warren, TN in the same wagon train, stopped near War Eagle, Van Buren, Arkansas, then some continued west into Newton, Carroll, and Madison counties.
The Whiteleys are not too difficult to track (thanks to Dorris Estes and Evelyn Flood), but I have been at the same brick wall with Caroline Jones and her parents for a long while now. Do you have any idea where I could search for info on her?
Also, my g-g-grandfather's name was James Nickols/Nichols. He and Mary E. Whiteley were (supposedly) married in 1883 in Newton, AR, and he died in 1891 in Newton County, AR. However, we have never found a record of him at all. I believe he may have been the son of William Nichols (found in 1880 census Jackson, Newton, AR), but cannot find any information on him, either.
Any ideas on where I might look?
Thank you in advance.
Rebecca

Joyce- I am researching the Bolin's as well. My great great great grandfather is John E Bolin. I have quite a bit of info and was wondering if you might be interested in swapping some. I have only one picture of John E. He is sitting in a chair. Do you have any more photos? I am stuck right now on John Henry Bolin's parents. I have heard that his mother died on the Trail of Tears in 1838. John Henry died a rather morbid death, by bushwackers. If you are interested I will tell you the story. Please feel free to contact me. I would so so greatly apprectiate it. Thank you, Jordan Bolin
my email is jobolin5537@aol.com or you can contact me on ancestory.com
Thanks!

Hi there. Well, the story of John Henry's death is rather morbid. He was killed by bushwackers in 1862, near the Atkinson School House. Of course, this was during the civil war, and any reasearch of Arkansas during the Civil War era will turn up with horror stories about the bushwackers. Have you heard of Alfie Bolin? By the way, he is of no relation to any of us Bolin's. Anyway, John Henry was killed on this bluff. The bushwackers beheaded him. Then, they stuffed his body in the trunk of a tree. His head or where his body was buried has never been located. One of my great uncles told that story. To back it up I asked my Grandpa, and he said it was completely true. Of course, we have no proof, as there were no death records back then. I have no census records before 1880, except for the 1870 of Colonel Felps and his father, Calvin. My Aunt Maria has Colonel Felp's death certificate, and Calvin is listed as his father. Elizabeth went on to have four more children, but we are unsure of their father. My Aunt Maria may be sending for all of their death records to see who is listed as their father. Many people list John Henry as Colonel Felps's father, but John Henry died in 1862. Colonel Felps was born 6 June 1865. The picture of John E. that I have is of him sitting down. He's not holding a book, but he's relaxed. I will be in Newton Co. next week and I am hoping to visit Colonel Felps' place. I am not sure of how to get there, but am hoping to find my way. Did you know there is a Bolin cemetery? Appraently the bluff that it is on is called Bolin Mountain, too. At least, this is what I have been told. I have seen that other people have connected John Henry to William Boling, but am not sure if that is right. I suppose that it could be, but I would like proof, and I am afraid I will never have any proof. My aunt told me that John Henry was 1/2 Indian, and that apparently his mother died in 1838, on the Trail of Tears. I have exact dates for all of Elizabeth Ann Nichols Bolin's children, if you need them. You may also check out my family tree on Ancestory.Com. The tree name is Dillard/England-Bolin/Rorie. My aunt told me that John E.'s death certificate lists his father as John Bolin Sr. and there is speculation as to whether or not his middle name was Henry or not. Anyway, I hope this helps you in some way. I am still searching, and hope to find more info on the families. Also, there is a web site you might check out if you haven't yet. It's all about family history in Newton Co. There is a page especially on the Bolin's. Here is the link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rkinfolks/...
I have tried to email the woman who put it up but have had no response. Hope this Helps!!!- Jordan

Joyce- thank you very much for the info. Now, is the homestead open to visitors? Or do I need to make an appointment with the owner? Is it just an open house? Thank you again!
Jordan

Hi Joyce, I am going to try and contact Sue Bolin, in hopes that I can see the homestead. Thank you for your help. My grandfather is Paul Bolin, the son of John Alexander Bolin, who is the grandson of John E. Bolin. My father is Mark Bolin. Thank you very much for your help!
Jordan Bolin
