My advice would be to go to the census of one of the relatives that you have any proximity of year of living, birth.. families seemed to stay together or near each other...that is how I found mine.. I knew one name, approximate date of birth and a guess at Arkansas. and that started it all. Good luck. C.Zima

BAKER and TORIX, Johnson or Newton Counties in AR around 1920 era

I have a family I am researching that names and dates are confusing. Info on the man I am researching is from his funeral records, submitter was his son Lester BAKER. Leonard BAKER was born in Jasper, AR on 31 Jul 1919. Leonard Baker's dad was listed as John Levi BAKER. The mom was listed as Dora Belle TOREX. Leonard Baker lived near Essex, Stoddard County, MO. He had lived near Bloomfield, Stoddard County, MO. His funeral service was held at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Stoddard County, MO. He died 15 Dec 1996 at his home near Essex, Stoddard County, MO. In the 1910 & 1920 census Dora Belle TORIX was living in the household of her mom & dad. So how could she be Leonard's mom? In 1910 census she was listed as Isabella TORIX on 15 Apr 1910 in Franklin County, AR. In the 1920 census she was listed as Belle TORIX on 21 Jan 1920 in Newton County, AR. She was married to Virgil Lewis COWELL on 27 Apr 1920 in Newton County, AR. Their children were said to be Leonard BAKER'S half siblings. They lived in Johnson County, AR in 1930 & 1940 and had 6 children. I haven't found Leonard BAKER in any censuses which proves who Leonard is. I haven't found a John Levi BAKER that could prove to be Leonard's dad. John must have died after Leonard was born (1919) and may have been raised by his father's parents. Seems like I was told he may have been raised by his grandparents. This may be why Leonard's not with Dora Belle TORIX in 1920. Leonard Baker married Delphia Juanita HOLFORD and their son, Lester BAKER was born 1 Feb 1947 near Manilla, Mississippi County, AR. They had 6 or 7 children, (3 or 4 girls and 3 boys). If anyone knows anything about these families I sure would like to communicate with you. Contact me through my email: loiscarmack@cablerocket.com

I hope you are still checking these boards. I'm sorry, but I just found this listing.

I too am a descendant of Burrell Busby and Margaret Elizabeth Carter. My mother was Willie Mae Rhynes, sister to Ditha Arizona Rhynes.

My mother told me that she was 1/8 Indian, but she did not say which tribe. I always assumed Cherokee, but have no factual information.

If I have counted right, that would make Nancy Jane Prichard a full-blooded Indian. (Or someone in the family of her generation.)

I too am still looking for the connection.

Any response would be seriously appreciated.

Thank you.

jc8161

I am researching my grandfather George Washington Redman/Redmond born 19 Sep 1888 at Combs, Madison Co, Arkansas. George was the son of Nancy Paralee Hill and a Mr _____ Redman/Redmond. In 1896 Nancy Paralee Hill married Moses Gibson. George married on 11 May 1908 in Madison Co to Zollie Stapleton d/o Commodore and Susan Janette (Poff) Stapleton. The marriage license for George and Zollie lists his name as George Redmond of Dutton. The marriage license is located in book H page 112, Madison County. By 1910 George is using his step father's last name of Gibson. The 1910 census shows George, Zollie & young son Basil living in the Kentucky Twp HH 105, Madison County. Very little is known about the elusive Mr Redman/Redmond, a distant relative who did research years ago had some information. She thought Nancy Paralee's mother Lucinda (Tucker) Hill took in boarders and that Mr Redman was one of those boarders. It's thought that Mr Redman was looking for work or was working in the area.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sher
sheriankennedy@aol.com

Does anyone know where this cemetery is located? I thought it was in Jasper, but findagrave.com has some township coordinates listed that have it closer to Deer. I am wanting to get there to take pictures of family headstones. Annie Isabelle Vanderpool is my 2nd great grandmother.

Here is what is listed:

"This cemetery is located on the old Vanderpool family farm in Newton County, Arkansas.

Approximate location is: SW 1/4, NE 1/4, Section 12 Township 12 North Range 21 West."
I am very familiar with these sites as I have used them for many years. They are excellent. Probably Phebe was married by the next census; but therein lies the problem...not knowing who she married. Hopefully, someone researching the Hollon name will someday have that answer. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I put in the search terms "Newton County Academy" so there is no way of knowing if it's Newton Co. Arkansas or Newton Co. Georgia, unless you recognize someone:

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSpGidS...

If I ever find more information for you, I'll post it here for you.
I would like ANY information regarding Phebe Hollon, born in Arkansas ca 1896. She is first found on the 1900 census in Boston, Madison, Arkansas with her parents, Cain and Martha Hollon. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, Martha died and Cain Hollon remarried. Phebe was then found on the 1910 census in Kentucky, Newton County, Arkansas living with her sister and brother-in-law, John and Nancy Cowan. Phebe was 14 years old on that census. I have found nothing further regarding her. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Gertrude Wilson (Daughter of Albert E. Simmons died and where he maybe buried?

Gertrude and Walter had two daughters Lillie and Myrtle.
Lillie married Denver Swain Jun 16, 1912.

On a 1917 WWI draft card Denver states that he's "partially" single and noted a child. He soon thereafter marries Nettie Eastep. (Anybody know who her parents were? )

Does anyone know what happened to Lillie and this child?

I see that Myrtle married and is buried at Hickory Grove as is a lot of her family.

I am a descendant of Albert Wilson, Luther Young & Samuel Eastep, of Newton County.
I welcome any correspondence from my Newton County cousins.

It states that he was one of the founders of the Academy and had served on the board since it's foundation. No dates were given for the academy.

I recently purchased a house in Western Grove, AR. The house was built about 1912 by a man named Joby Moss. Is there any relation?

I recently purchased a home in Western Grove, AR. I believe the man who may have built this house back in 1912 was named Joby Moss. Is this man any relation to the Moss family you are asking about?

Yes, we did indeed own this hotel. My father told me stories of visiting there as a boy and playing cops and robbers with an old cap and ball Colt Walker revolver that was knocking around the front desk as a curio. I don't have any proof, but I am sure something can be found with a name on it.
W.P. is my ggf. J.B. is my grandfather and my rather is James Conard.

I am seeking information and a picture of the Academy.I saw something on line that said the building was razed. Could anyone conform this? When did it open and close? What date was it torn down? Thank you.

Does anyone know any information about the "old Murray Hotel" located in Jasper, Newton County, Arkansas? My grandfather's records incidate family owned this hotel, but I can't find any proof. The relative is supposedly Priscilla Isabelle Ammons who married Walter Murray (also an editor of the Newton County Times at some point).
