Nathaniel & Alice are my greatgrandparents. But, I'm having a hard time finding out any information regarding them. I believe they started out in Newton County, AR, then moved to Oklahoma. They had a daughter named Harriet Emeline (Flud) Borders, she was my grandmother.
I'm more than willing to share what little info I have.
Thanks,
Andrea

Here is what I could find in the census records for Newton County, AR. Maybe this will help.

1880 Newton County, Arkansas census White Township Dwelling 25-6
FLUD, John (Benjamin Kink) 45 farmer MO Father NC Mother TN
Emiline (COOPER) 38 MO father TN, Mother TN
John Ben 18 AR MO MO
Poley 14 female AR MO MO
Edia 13 AR MO MO
Sarah 11 AR MO MO
Nathan 9 AR MO MO
Olaver 7 AR MO MO
Virginia 4 AR AR AR
James 2 AR AR AR
William 3/12 AR AR AR born in Feb.

1900 Newton County Arkansas census Jackson Township Dwelling 92-6
FLUD, Nathan A. Jan 1870 age 29 married for 7 years AR AR AR
ALLICE? Jan 1877 wife age 23 has two children both living NC TN TN
Lawrence Dec 1895 son age 4 AR AR NC
Hollarie? Oct 1897 son age 2 AR AR MC

I also checked marriage records and found no marriage for Nathan or Nathaniel to Alice. The question marks were after these names in the census book, which means they were hard to read and might not be right.

There is anothr Nathaniel FLUD living in Newton County who is much older than this Nathan A.

Hello, Evelyn
I've just been over at your website to look at Isaac Nathan and Alcie Regan Flud. I have some questions, please.

You indicate her parents were Choctaw and Alcie received a land allotment of 300 acres. I can find her nowhere in the Dawes Final Roll. Can you tell me what the documentation for that is, by any chance? I ask because the areas where I find her family from 1850-1880 are firmly in the Old Cherokee Nation - Haywood, Jackson and Swain Counties. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it reads a little odd. I suspect her family did not move, rather the counties changed around them as the place names follow the county formation chronology and in Jackson and Swain Counties they were still with the Oconaluftee P.O.

Even if Alcie were Cherokee, though, I still can find no Dawes Census Card for her under any spelling I've tried or any combination of parents' names. Boo!

It's such a pity the 1890 burned. I can find Alcie's parents or siblings nowhere in 1900, although I may just not have the right wild cards yet.

I have both these families on the 1850-1900 census and the Isaac Fluds through 1930. I would be happy to share them.

Can you tell me how, if at all, this family connects to the Newton Co. Self/Selft/Selph family? This is a collateral line for my mother-in-law.

There are many other names on your site I need explore.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.
Susan

Hi, my name is Andrea Zuill. I just read your response to a response that Evelyn Flood sent me. Alcie Donia Reagan is my Great Grandmother. Family talk has told me that she was Cherokee. I have nothing to back this up with. Evelyn gave me the info that Alcie's folks where choctaw and that she received Oklahoma land for her indian ties.

I have been able to trace Alcie only after her marriage to Isaac Nathaniel Flud. All evidence has been from Oklahoma Census. You stated that you have found her before this time in North Carolina. Can you give me all the info you have?

As for her connection with the Selph family I have the answer to that. Alcie and I. Nathaniel's daughter Harriett Emeline (My Grandmother) married Ray Borders (b. 1908, Texanna, McIntosh Co., OK) who's mother is Mintie Ann Selph, and father is James Cephas Borders. Both are buried in Allen, Pontotoc Co., OK in the Allen Cemetery. I visited their graves last summer. Mintie Ann was born in1887, Baxter Co., AR. Her Father and Mother are William Harvey and Ellen Selph.

I hope this helps. I have a couple photo's of Mintie and Family and also of Alcie if you would like me to email them to you.
Thanks,
Andrea

Thanks for the information on the Selphs. I have been working on this family for someone else and it connects to my very lovely, dearly loved mother-in-law (I am so blessed to have her!)

I would love to have the photographs. Thank you for the very kind offer!

Happy time travels!

Wow, you have filled in a lot of missing pieces for me. You have confirmed that Harriett A. Reagan was Alcie. I thought so since all the pieces match.
But here is where the fun starts. I believe I have found the Cherokee connection. Here it goes - (also backwords)

Isaac Nathaniel Flud, b. 1870, AR
married to Alcie Reagon, b. 1877, AR

Isaac Nathaniel Flud's parents:
John Kink Flud, b. 1835, AR
married to Emiline Cooper, b. 1841, MO

Emiline Cooper's parents:
Isaac N. Cooper, b. 1812, KY
Narcissa Jane Ritchie, b. 1814, SC

Isaac N. Cooper's parents:
James Cooper, b. 1796, TN
Lucretia Crese Blevins, b. 1814, KY

Isaac Cooper's parents:
Isaac Cooper, b. 1775, NC
Nancy Black Fox, b. 1795, Cherokee Nation East.
(she is full blood Cherokee)
Nancy Black Fox's parents:
Chief Black Fox (indian name Enola)
and the daughter of Attakullakulla

Both Chief Black Fox and Attakullakulla are very famous. And where the leaders of the whole cherokee nation from the late 1700's, early 1800's.

So , Chief Black Fox is my G6 Grandfather. I found this all out during lunch and there are several genealogies that indicate this same information.

I will be sending the photographs tomorrow.
Thanks,
Andrea

p.s.- Isaac Cooper may have been French/Jewish, so the Coopers and some of the Fluds are considered Melungeon.

Blackfox, eh? This one will be a right kettle of fish! I think you might want to join the CherokeeGene and Attakullakulla lists at rootsweb. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Native/Attakull...

I know there is at least one other Blackfox researcher looking, I believe, for your Nancy. I just can't remember whether she wason the CherokeeGene or Cherokee NC list. But the timing seems off on Nancy. Try having a look here as a place to start:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/c/James-R-Hic... Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and new information comes to light all the time that changes things and debunks old and long held beliefs. Jim notes the documentation as he has gone through beginning with the Starr genealogies and correcting them as the documents show corrections are needed.

You will see here that Jim has the Blackfox aka I-no-li you refer to as the son of Attakullakulla, rather than the nephew. No daughter is found for him named Nancy. That alone doesn't mean anything, though, as there are lots of folks still not appended to their families. There is a second Blackfox aka I-no-li that Jim shows as a Dougherty descendant and the father of Nancy Blackfox, but she is about 40 years later than your Nancy.

I also have an abstract of a Guion Miller application that references Enola Blackfox as the brother of Rachel Walker. He was born about 1840 and may connect, but we have not discovered how, yet.

At present, unless it has come to light in the last year, there is NO evidence that documents Nancy Blackfox as the daughter of the Blackfox who was the son of Attakullakulla. It is conjecture at this point, so walk with caution.

The names you cited rang bells immediately. They connect to the very controversial Sizemore Family Case. There were many, many applications by Sizemore descendants for the Guion Miller per capita payment. All of them were denied because there was only word of mouth and no association ever proved. That does not mean they were not Cherokee, but they never lived among the Eastern Cherokee and had not a shred of proof of their origins. If I am not mistaken, I read somewhere on one of the lists that some of the Sizemore descendants had participated in a DNA study and their results had shown none of the markers for NA DNA. We still don't understand everything we know about DNA so I cannot be a judge on that one.

Dr. Donald Panther-Yates has been doing a study on this family, from which he descends. I feel certain you probably ran across him in your search. You might want to contact him directly. I haven't spoken with him in more than a year and don't know where his research stands on the Sizemore family. His postings, as a rule, clearly indicate the information is not firmly documented and from his working notes, not cast in stone. As a professor, he I would say he knows better than most the need for proper documentaiton and where you can go with a thesis.

I did note with interest something I never caught before about Attakullakulla. Jim Hicks has him listed as half Cherokee and half Algonquin with a ?. The Cherokee made alliances through marriages in much the way the royal houses of Europe did - and before the Europeans taught them to do so. I had always thought Attakullakulla was a full-blood Cherokee. Interesting that he might not be. Not that it really matters, but it's a new avenue to look at.

I look forward to seeing the pictures. What a fun present to give to Grammy!

Have a good one!
