Just found out that my ggrandfather, Guian Almerine Shelley, died in Nevada Co. on May 10, 1929.

His wife was Louisa Innis. They had at one time lived in Tx as that's where my grandfather, John Byron, and his sibs were born.

Wondering if anyone may have any info on this family.

Thanks so much,

Rhonda Kelley Seymour
rbkellper@sbcglobal.net

I am looking for ancestry information on my great-grandmother. She was mostly like born in Ouachita or Nevada County around 1880. She married William McKinley Creech, from Ouachita County, and had six children. Sometime after his death, she and the children packed up and moved to southeastern Missouri. Her father was obviously Smith and I believe her mother's name was Callie Johnson. Any information on either side of this family would be a big help. Thanks!

Charley & Jodie Jackson and son Wesley Jackson (born c.1895)

Seeking more information about the following two Jacksons buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in northern Nevada County, Arkansas (Redland township / community). They were probably also kin to F. C. Butler and Al Loomis of Redland:

CHARLEY JACKSON – born 1869, died about 12-2-1914. (Dates per Cornish Funeral Home records.) (This grave at Shady Grove was not found during cemetery surveys and appears to be unmarked, although it is most likely next to his son Wesley Jackson’s gravesite, which is also unmarked. Charley died of typhoid fever at age 45 (per Dr. Buchanan's funeral home records). His funeral on December 3, 1914 at 4:00 pm was ordered by F. C. Butler and Al Loomis and charged to C. W. Brandon. Charley lived in Rosston (central Nevada County) and was buried at Shady Grove. Charley and his wife Jodie/Joda had a son, Wesley Jackson, who is also buried at Shady Grove, where Charley and his wife Jodie were listed as members in the circa 1895-1913 period. An additional listing on Shady Grove’s membership at this time was Lena Jackson, who may be another child of theirs. (Sources: Cornish Funeral Home microfilm records 1914; and “The History of Shady Grove Baptist Church.”)

WESLEY JACKSON – born about 1895, died 5-21-1917. (Dates per obit.) This grave at Shady Grove was not found during cemetery surveys and appears to be unmarked, although it is listed on earlier cemetery records. Wesley's obituary appeared in the May 22, 1917 issue of "The Prescott Daily News". . . “Wesley Jackson, 22 years of age, died at his home in Georgia township near Mt. Moriah, yesterday. The cause of his death is given as epilepsy. Interment was at Shady Grove cemetery this afternoon at about 4 o’clock. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Jodie Jackson, two sisters, Mrs. John Fore and Mrs. Chas. Fore, and one brother, all of this county.”

Wesley’s parents were Charles and Jodie Jackson (per funeral home records), and his father Charley appears to be buried next to him. Wesley’s funeral was ordered by W. L. Honea and charged to F. F. Honea and D. L. Fore of Mt. Moriah rural route. Funeral home death records also confirm he was epileptic and buried at Shady Grove. His parents are listed at Shady Grove Church as members in the circa 1895-1913 period [as Charlie and Joda Jackson]. An additional listing for Lena Jackson may denote a sibling. (Sources: Cornish Funeral Home microfilm records 1917; and “The History of Shady Grove Baptist Church”, published 2002.)

TONG family of Redland township, circa 1880s-1920s.

Seeking more information about the Reverend Ernest W. Tong family who lived in the Redland community in the 1880s-1920s. He was a Methodist minister and may have been pastor of one of two Methodist churches at Redland (probably called Oak Grove and Mt. Nebo) during this early period. The Tongs appear to have been related to the Webb, Worthington, and Hughes families, as well as later possibly the Jackson and Ridling families.

Also seeking more info on the following Tong child buried in 1902 at Shady Grove Cemetery at Redland:

HORACE W. TONG – born 1890, died 1902. Horace, who died at age 12, appears to be the son of Sarah S. Webb Worthington and Rev. Ernest W. Tong—-a Methodist minister at Redland in 1888-1897. Sarah died in 1923, and she is buried at nearby Liberty Cemetery. Rev. Ernest W. Tong had earlier been married to Sarah A. Hughes (born 1841 AL, died in Nov 1888), who helped organize Salem Methodist Church in 1880.

Others who may be related: John F. Tong married in 1897 to Camilla Jackson, with Rev. Ernest W. Tong performing the ceremony. Earl T. Ridling married Etta Tong about 1914 at Redland. E. D. Tong married C. V. Jackson in 1899 at Redland. In 1954 at Prescott, there was a State Trooper policeman, R. Henry Tong, which may also be from this particular Tong family line.

Mrs. McKenzie died 1922 & buried Shady Grove Cemetery

Seeking identification and additional family information about the Mrs. McKenzie buried in 1922 at Shady Grove Cemetery in the Redland community of Nevada County, Arkansas.

MRS. McKENZIE – died 3-25-1922. This grave was not found during cemetery surveys and appears to be unmarked. A death notice appearing in the March 30, 1922 “Redland News” column of the Nevada News says: “Jno. McKenzie’s mother died at his home Saturday. Her remains will be interred at Shady Grove Cemetery on Monday.”

Note that Jno. McKenzie probably was the J. B. McKenzie referred to in the following “Nevada County Picayune” item on Dec 20, 1917: “Lost – One pair small work mules 8 to 10 years old. Strayed from J. B. McKenzie’s place, December 12. Please phone Will Hannah, M. L. Moore or Nat Martin [who all lived at Redland].”

Note also that the maiden name of Lula Riggs (wife of Sherman Riggs of Redland) was McKenzie / McKinzie, and she was born in 1900. It is feasible that the Mrs. McKenzie buried at Shady Grove is Lula’s mother or aunt. Lula’s siblings were Rosie, Leon, Floyd and Lee McKenzie. Lula‘s brother Leon is mentioned in a news item in the March 19, 1925 “Redland” community column of the “Picayune”: “Mr. Leon McKenzie and Miss Ellen Rogers were married Saturday.”

W. J. Tompkins, died 1897; buried Shady Grove Cemetery with Civil War marker

Seeking identification and additional family information about W. J. Tompkins of Redland township/community in Nevada County, Arkansas.

W. J. TOMPKINS – died 10-30-1897. His marker at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery at Redland township, Nevada County, Arkansas, is a Civil War veteran marker: "Blacksmith – Co. D – 1 Ala. Cav. – CSA." Since W. J. Tompkins served during the Civil War with a Confederate Alabama cavalry unit, he probably did not come to Arkansas until after the war. Due to his military service, he was probably born about 1842 or earlier and died at age 55+. His 10-30-1897 date of death is from Shady Grove Church minutes.

Note that other members of Shady Grove in 1895 included the following Tompkins who are possibly related to W. J. Tompkins: Argin C. Tompkins, George D. Tompkins, Jarrod Tompkins, E. M. Tompkins, and Mary Gurley Tompkins (note that this Mary was the daughter of Jane Gibson and John Gurley of Redland).

Note also that Mary Gurley (a niece to Charlotte Gurley Montgomery and to Sallie Gurley Hunt, both also buried here at Shady Grove) married George D. Tompkins in 1896, and he may be a son of this W. J. Tompkins.

J. Russell Chamlee (who married into the Wheat family at Redland and was a member of Shady Grove church) was also later married to Daisy Tompkins, and they lived at Bluff City in eastern Nevada County. Russell’s sister also married a Dr. Tompkins (b 1872, d 1939), who is buried at Bluff City.

Another probable member of this Tompkins family was mentioned in a news item of the March 12, 1925 “Redland” community column in the “Nevada County Picayune”: “Ira Tompkins and family from Falcon visited Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hannah and family Saturday night and Sunday.” These Hannahs lived at Redland township near Shady Grove Church and were also members there. It is possible that the Tompkins were kin to the Hannahs.

Ollie Robinson, born 1901, died 1915; daughter of J. V. (or J. B.) Robinson

Seeking identificaiton and more family info about Ollie Robinson of Redland township, Nevada County, Arkansas.

OLLIE ROBINSON – born 1-19-1901, died 1-14-1915. (Birth and death dates are from published obituaries.) (This grave was not found during cemetery surveys and appears to be unmarked. Note that this burial was listed on early Shady Grove Church’s cemetery records, although Ollie was incorrectly listed there as born in 1914, instead of 1901.)

Obituary appearing in the January 21, 1915 "Nevada News" says: “Miss Ollie Robinson, who was born January 19, 1901, near Denning [Franklin County], Arkansas, died at the home of her father, J. V. Robinson, 5 miles east of Prescott, near Shady Grove Church on January 14, 1915. It is sad to chronicle the death of one so young in years. She united with the [Shady Grove] Missionary Baptist Church in July 1914. She leaves a father, step-mother, two brothers and a host of friends to mourn her death. With Miss Ollie’s death, Shady Grove Sunday School has lost a most constant and devoted member and to the family a most loving and affectionate daughter and sister. — Committee [Shady Grove Church] consisting of H. P. Felts, Mrs. Adam Thomas, Miss Mucie Ridling."

Ollie was the 14-year-old daughter of J. V (or J.B.) Robinson of Redland. Her burial at Shady Grove Cemetery is supported by church records. Shady Grove also lists a Sarah Roberson in 1894 as a church member and a Mother Roberson in the 1895-1913 period. They are also most likely part of Ollie’s family. (Source: “The History of Shady Grove Baptist Church”, published 2002.)
Thomas F. Butler and F. C. Butler, circa 1913

Seeking more family info about the following persons buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in northeastern Nevada County's Redland township / community...

THOMAS (Tom) F. BUTLER – born 1891 or 1892, died 9-18-1913. This grave at Shady Grove was not found during cemetery surveys and appears to be unmarked. His obituary appearing in the September 18, 1913 "Nevada News" says: “Tom Butler, age 21, died suddenly yesterday afternoon three miles from this city of pulmonary hemorrhage. Mr. Butler was employed at a sorghum mill in the Shady Grove vicinity and was feeding the mill. The hemorrhage came on him, and he bled to death within a few minutes. The remains were interred this afternoon in the Shady Grove cemetery.”

Per funeral records, Thomas F. Butler officially died of tuberculosis (at age 22) at Redland. He appears to have been the son (although unconfirmed) of F. C. Butler, who was responsible for funeral charges, with additional security by H. A. Loomis. Thomas Butler was also listed as a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Redland in the circa 1895-1913 period. Perhaps F. C. Butler was the father of Tom Butler??

Also kin to F. C. Butler and Al Loomis of Redland were Charley Jackson and his son Wesley Jackson (born about 1895), who are also buried at Shady Grove Cemetery. I would like to clarify these Jacksons' family connections to the Butler and Loomis families.

I think Ollie may have been a Rowe before she married Henry. I think his name was John Henry Smith because he was listed that way on the 1910 census. Ollie may have died in early 1929, where is the other members of the family in 1930? Did Clyde marry in Nevada County? Where was he in 1930? I find records for a Clyde Smith but it does not appear to be this one.
Any help will be appreciated.
Wanda Sloan Karnes

Nathan Cox married Elizabeth Buchanan in 1843, Hempstead /Nevada County, Arkansas

In Feb 1843 in Hempstead County, Arkansas (in portion that later became Nevada County), NATHAN COX (born 1822 AR or MO) married ELIZABETH BUCHANAN (born 1822-1823 AR or MO). They appear in the 1860 census under Carouse/Redland township in Ouachita County AR (although this township was on the line where Ouachita and Hempstead counties joined and where Nevada was later formed).

They had 4 children (per 1850 & 1860 censuses):
1. Frances M. Cox, born 1843-1844 AR.
2. James A. (or H.) Cox , born 1845-1846 AR; he probably married Jane Gresham in 1890.
3. Mary L. Cox, born 1847-1848 AR; probably married M. B. Clark in 1870.
4. Andrew J. Cox, born 1856 AR.

Also in Nathan's household in 1850's census was his wife's mother and sister--Mary Buchanan (born 1793 NC) and Evaline Buchanan (born 1826).

Elizabeth appears to have died about 1880, and Nathan appears to have married again to Nancy Murphey, daughter of John and Mary Murphey in Sevier County AR. Nathan and Nancy supposedly went to Oklahoma's Indian Territory to live about 1890-1900. There was also a Nathaniel Cox earlier on the 1838 tax list in Sevier County AR, but it's unsure if they are connected.

It is a family tradition that this Nathan Cox is related to my Cox family that was from the same Nevada County AR area and timeframe---the John Cox (born 1787 VA), Abner Cox (born 1805 MO), and Abner's father William Cox. I'm trying to determine how Nathan is connected and more about him.
Thanks!

Six Gibson siblings from early 1900's Nevada County, Arkansas

Following are 6 siblings born in about the later 1890s to early 1900s, who were probably children of either Rufus Gibson or his brother Henry Gibson from the Redland community, east of Prescott, Arkansas:

1. Elizabeth Gibson. She became Elizabeth Hill when she married a Mr. Hill and they lived in Houston TX.

2. Elbie Gibson, born 1894, died 1959. She married #1 Mr. Dovers and #2 Mr. Morris. Elbie had a son—-George W. Dovers of Huntsville and five grandhildren by 1959. Elbie’s funeral in July 1959 was at Liberty Church at Redland, and she was buried at Liberty Cemetery at Redland. Pallbearers were Harold Abbot, Ernest Gibson, Scott Hannah, Brice Stewart, Pete Martin, and Don Abbot.

3. Minnie Gibson. She became Minnie Merchant when she married a Mr. Merchant and lived in Texarkana.

4. Annie Gibson. She became Annie Lightner when she married a Mr. Lightner (or Lightener) and lived in Texarkana.

5. Jim Gibson, born about 1897. He lived later in California. Jim’s son was most likely Thomas Rufus Gibson (born 1929 AR, died 2001), who later lived in Taft CA
and Bakersfield CA.

6. John H. Gibson. He lived at Prescott AR. A news item in the March 13, 1919 “New Union News” community [Redland] column of the Nevada News says: “The party at Mr. [Rufus] Gibson’s, given in honor of his son [John H.], who is just back from France [WWI], was largely attended.”

Another news item on Sept 25,1919 says: “John H. Gibson of near Serepta, will take courses at the State University. These are free for boys disabled in the war. Gibson was wounded three times in France and lost an eye.”

Per the Nevada News’ “Glass Fish Hole” columns on May 18, 1922 and June 15, 1922: “Mr. John H. Gibson bought a Dodge car Saturday.” AND “John H. Gibson is home from Hot Springs to see his best girl.“

If anyone can share more info about these Gibsons, I am trying to sort out all the Nevada County Gibsons, and your help would be appreciated.
William (“Will”) Gibson, born about 1853 (per the 1860 census). In 1928, he lived at Waldo in southern Nevada County, Arkansas (per his sister Ann’s 1928 obituary). Will was the son of John and Polly Stevenson Gibson. Will had 9 siblings: John, Nancy Ann, Jane, Sarah Matilda "Tildy", James, Henry, Rufus, Laura, and Luther. They lived in the Redland community, six miles east of Prescott AR. I would like to learn more about Will and his family, earlier and later.

Wondering if there would be an obit for Raleigh McMillan that died in Nevada Co., 2 March 1930? Also, is this county near El Dorada, Union Co., AR? Asking because that is where the family lived and he worked for the railroad as a conductor so wondering if it could have been a work related death?
Appreciate any help on this. I plan to check with Union Co. as well to see if they ran his obit there as well but if it was an accident, place where it took place would probably have more details than his home town.
Mary

Obituary & Cemetery Lookup Request

Hello,

I am trying to locate obituaries for the following Nevada County residents, and also, if possible, identify the cemeteries where they are buried, dates, etc. If anyone has access to this information, I would appreciate it very much.

James W. Regan (or Reagan)
-- died 1880/1900 in Nevada County; he lived there in 1880. He was born in 1819. Someone told me that he was buried in the Baird Cemetery, but I can't find any information on a cemetery by this name, so I can't verify this.

Mary C. Regan (or Reagan)
-- wife of James W. Regan above. She lived as a widow in Nevada County with her children in 1900 and 1910. I presume that she died between 1910 and 1920 in Nevada County.

Joseph Daniel Regan (or Reagan)
-- brother of James W. Regan. He settled in what was originally Hempstead County in the 1850s, lived there in 1860, but the region in which he lived was apparently put into Nevada County. He died in 1877, and his widow Mary Ann (Polly) lived there with their children in 1880.

Mary Ann (Polly) Lee Regan (or Reagan)
-- wife of Joseph D. Regan. I cannot find any information on her after the 1880 census, when she lived in Nevada County.

Thanks,

Tim Hudson

I am searching (fruitlessly, so far) for information regarding a Mary/Mollie SMITH, son Walter W. SMITH, Daughter Blanch SMITH, and son Pugh MECKLIN. Her husband's name may have been Frank (SMITH). They were living in Prescott between 1890 and 1900. Unfortunately, Frank died sometime during that time period, when my grandfather (Walter) was very young, and all the various documents available so far (censuses and death certificates have very conflicting information.
If you have any of these people in your line, or even have a suggestion for me, please contact me. :-)
Thank you,
Loralee

J. D. Lott, Mollie Davidson from late 1884

In October 1884 in Carroll County, Miss., Davis Lott -- full name Jefferson Davis Lott -- and a brother, Charles Lott, were indicted in the murder of one Henderson Somerville. Mollie Davidson, stepdaughter of the murdered man and a cousin of the Lotts, was a witness to the grand jury that indicted the brothers. There was never a conviction, one reason being the failure to get necessary witnesses to come to court. Latter day researchers find record in early Nov. 1884 of a marriage in Nevada County, Ark., between Mollie and "J. D. Lott" -- who was already married in Carroll County, Miss. Can anyone shed light on this alleged marriage -- and upon whatever happened to either of these people?

I'm looking for information on WIlliam D A Booker's parents. He was born 1826 AL. (He later used the D, probably because he was a doctor. His middle name I believe is Arthur. ) His parents were both from VA. William married Paralee Drake. They had several children together in franklin, Alabama and moved to Nevada, Arkansas by 1880. Their children; William A, Freberick Beverly, Dollie E, Etna, Lester J, Virginia, Lillian A, and Tralucia, all born between 1854-1968.

Frederick married Ada, Dollie married Samuel Hay, Etna married a roland, and Virginia married a Vaughn.

If any of the information sounds familiar, or if you have any questions, I would be glad to hear from you.
Thanks,
Stephanie

I am searching for records on the family of Stanley Dowing, also spelled Dowen, Doen, Doyne, etc. He was born about Dec 1833 in Union County Arkansas, the son of Bennett J. Dowing and Melany Ogden. His father died in the 1840s, and in 1850 his mother lived with her sister Elizabeth Ogden Andrews in Union County. By 1860, the Andrews and Dowings had moved across the Louisiana state line into the Spearsville area of Union Parish LA.

In the latter 1860s, Stanley Dowing moved his family to what was then Hempstead County, apparently the portion that became Nevada. He lived in Albany Township in 1880, 1900, and 1910.

Does anyone know when he died. He apparently died 1910-1920.

I would appreciate information on his children.

Thanks,

Tim Hudson

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
Providence Cemetery-Recent vandalism

To all whom have family buried at the Providence Cemetery located beside I-30 in Nevada County...
There has been recent vandalism at this cemetery causing markers to be pushed over, broken, etc.... I have family buried there and I am going to have to repair the old stone markers from 1899. This is a disgrace and it's an ongoing problem. If you have family buried there and would like information you can contact me through email.
I don't know exactly who took care of the cemetery, but it has always been neatly kept. There has always been a spot in the front of the cemetery where "kids" probably built a fire and held parties. I know this has happened before to this cemetery and repairs were made. I don't know who to thank for the repair, but if you are reading this, I do say " Thank You".
Here are some of the names on the stones I saw that were knocked over:
James A. Newberry; Mary Dillion McGuire; Dora Dillon; Agnes Dillon; J. Lee; T.J. Lee;
These are just a few. Almost all the stones have recent damage.
Hi,

I'm looking for information on William B. White, son of William M. White and Martha A. White (don't know her maiden name).

William B. White seems to have lived in Prescott at the same time as another man by the same name -- William B. White, son of Joseph Rosser White and Pheobe Whiteside. My assumption is that I'm related to this clan of Whites too, but I'm not sure how.

My William B. White appears in the 1880 Census, living in the household of his father William M, along with mother Martha A, and young brother Charles. He was born about 1860.

He married Nancy "Nannie" Jane Melson on 21 Oct 1886. She was the daughter of Leandor Elmore Melson and Mary Ellen Wingfield.

William B. and Nannie White's children were:
Snow E White
William Elmore "Buck" White
Lawrence White
Charles Marshall White
Beatrice W White
Elbie White

Charles Marshall White married Ethel Marie Beggs, daughter of Henry Beggs and Carrie Harrison. Their children are:
Charles Dee White
Dorothy Snow White
Bob White

If you have any information on William B. White, his ancestors, or his descendants, including photos, documents, newspaper clippings, or anything else, I love to see them. Would appreciate any census lookups too. I have the 1880 census information mentioned above. I also have 1920 census on Henry Beggs, and 1930 census on Charles Marshall White. Anything new would be appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Andrea White

I am researching the family of Roy Waters of Willisville. His daughter is my mother-in-law. I know that his father was Sam, and grandfather, A. J. I do not know A.J.'s full name, and I am not certain about his wife's name. I think that she may have died many years before he did, so they are not buried together. Her name is listed in the 1880 census as H. Mary. She was born in Georgia, as was A.J., but this is all that I know. If anyone has any information that may be helpful I would appreciate it. My mother-in-law is not certain of the names this far back.

William H. Clark / Joseph I. Clark in Caney Township

Hi, I am looking for information for my Uncle Jerry on his family. His father was Loyal Wanda Clark. He was the son of Joe Clark. I believe in the census he is listed as Joseph I. Clark. He is married to Ruth P. Unknown and has several children, Alice, Calvin, Josephine, Albina Lavern (male), Bonny J., and Mildred G. Uncle Jerry knows next to nothing about his family, except these names. I believe he is also related to Mary Jane and George Byron Sherman, but I am not sure on the connection just yet. They might have been grand-parents on the other side. Either way, I am trying to trace down family history for him. He know they lived in Nevada County and had a farm there before moving to Texarkana, Arkansas. I have found a William H. Clark who is the father of Joseph Clark in the 1880 census. He is married to a Missina Unknown and they have Joseph and another son Henry. By the 1900 census he is married to Isabella and they have added Wilburn (or William), Emma, Floyd, Lucille, and Mizette (?). I believe Lucille (Lucy) married a Hick (?)Dillard, as Isabella is living with them in the 1920 census. Hick and Lucy have a son Joseph. If anybody can make any sense out of this information or has any info to share with me, I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to give my Uncle Jerry as much information as I can as a Christmas present!

Thanks so much,
Jennifer Jones

S. L. White marriage info

I have a photo-copy of a marriage certificate for S.L. White of Zama, Nevada Co., Ar and Mrs. Fannie Breedlove(nee Parker), also of Zama, filed 21 February 1895. This certificate was solemnized by John G.? Purifoy. Does anyone have any idea who this man, White, was?

The marriage did not last long and there is some confusion as to what happened. Did White die? Did he abandon Fannie and her young children?

On September 5th, 1899 Fannie married James L. Turnage, also in Nevada Co. My great-grandmother is said to be from this marriage, although her date of birth appears to be 26 February 1897, smack in the middle between the two marriages.

Any information on S.L. White and his marriage to Fannie Breedlove would be GREATLY appreciated.
