I descend from the Hildebrands of Nevada County. In the book THE HELDEBRAND HERITAGE by Helen Odum Harrell (1980), there are two pages on Margaret Jane Heldebrand, who married Martin Mitchell about 1874. It says Martin was born about 1851 AR and his parents had come from Georgia. Margaret was the 8th childof Daniel Jefferson Heldebrand (who's my great-grandfather) and Daniel's first wife Dorothy Permelia Parnell. Margaret was born 1851 Union County AR & died in the 1940s. Her nickname was Maggie, Mag or Mog, and I have several photos of her and Martin. She was a vivacious, colorful character who lived well into her nineties but never got old.

Margaret & Martin Mitchell had 3 children:
...(1) Thomas Thaddeus Mitchell born 1875, died 1960, married Kansas Lambert (both buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, 9 miles north of El Dorado on Hwy 15 in Union Co AR). They had 7 children.
...(2) Louis Wilmar Mitchell born 1878, died 1935, married Nannie Prim (born buried Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery, west of El Dorado between El Dorado & Cairo, 1.4 miles south of Hwy 82). They had 4 children.
...(3) Lula Mitchell, married #1 Johnny Harris & #2 Oscar McCleskey. They had 2 children. (I have contact info on a descendant of Lula's.)

The 1880 census for Bridge Creek Township in Ouachita County AR shows this (misspelled) entry:
...Marten L. Michel, 29, farmer, ARK, father GA, mother GA
...Margaret, 29, ARK, father SC, mother ALA
...Thomas T., 4, ARK
...Lewie W., 2, ARK

The HELDEBRAND HERITAGE book doesn't mention a divorce and any info about Martin marrying again. Margaret's parents lived at Bluff City in Nevada County but very near to the Ouachita County line. They had earlier lived in Union County AR too, so there were connections to all three counties, as you can also see from the above info. The divorce was most likely filed in one of these 3 counties, although you also mentioned Old Washington, which is in Hempstead County.

Thanks for your reply. I had not found him on the Ouachita County Census. I am a descendant of Lula Mitchell & Oscar McCleskey. I have been in contact with Ms. Harrell & Mary Cox about Lula. She & Oscar had one son, my father Orby McCleskey, b. 1908 Union County & died 1984. He is buried @ Pleasant Grove also. My information about Martin Mitchell & Margaret's divorce came from my father & Thomas T. Mitchell 's daughter, Gladys. Her husband Scot Cottrell & Thomas T. attended Martin L. Mitchell's funeral in Nevada County. They rode a train to Prescott & the family met them at the train in a wagon. John, Martin's son by Hattie ,& his Uncle. I don't know his name. They rode north & east to a country church. This was the summer before the war broke out. I have not located a stone for him in any books about Nevada graveyards. Was their a paper with an Obit.? Where did Hattie & John die? Does any Hildebrand Descendants know if Thomas Mitchell who maried the older dau. was related to Martin Louis Mitchell? Thanks for helping ?

Betty:
I finally realized that I know you! My sister is Ann Wylie at Hope and my mother is the Mary Cox that you mentioned as having helped you with Hildebrand genealogy info in years past.

I'm afraid I don't have any answers to your questions about the two Mitchells, and I don't know of any Hildebrands that have done more research on Nevada County Hildebrands than Mother. Sounds like from your description of directions traveled from Prescott north and then east, that the country church they went to could have been at the community of Boughton. The cemetery for that community is Piney Grove. If you contact me directly, I can get you in touch with a fellow that researches all the old newspapers of Nevada County and also the cemeteries, and perhaps he's located an obit for Martin Mitchell and/or Hattie or John Mitchell.

Thanks for your reply on Martin Louis Mitchell. He was born July 27, 1851 in AR. & died in Nevada County, AR Abt. 1941. I also found an old note book in their library that was hand written on Page 58 it said " Hatley" Mitchell died in Nevada County on June 10, 1941. Could this be Hattie?? She was much younger than M.L. Mitchell. Their marriage license in 1918 says Hattie is 38 & he is 66. Please put me in touch with the person who might look at obits for 1941 in Nevada. Thanks for your help. BA Harris

Hi, I have Hatley E. Mitchell b. Aug 3 1911 d. June 10 1941. Son of Robert Lonzo Mitchell and Saphronia E. Ellis (I also have it as Saphronia E Shepard do you know which is correct?). They are in the 1920 Boughton Census:

Robert L. Mitchell, 59, b. Georgia, father and mother born Georgia.
Sapronia E. Mitchell, 37, born Arkansas, father born Missouri, mother born Mississippi.
DeLaughton Mitchell, son 12 born Arkansas
Hattley E Mitchell, son 8 born Arkansas
Ralph G Mitchell, son, 5, born Arkansas
Lela O Mitchell, dau, 2 10/12ths
Therman W Mitchell, son, 7/12

I don't think that this is Hattie. However, they most probably are related. Do you have any more info on this line of Mitchells?

Not my direct line, but Robert L. Mitchell is a half brother to my ggrandfather Tobias B (Bailey) Smith. (Harriet C. Tribble Mitchell Smith and George M. Smith). My other lines in Nevada and Hempstead Co are through Henry Mark McCain. My grandparents were Dee (Bud) Smith and Mattie Lee McCain.

Thanks

Rich
