I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

Immigration data was not asked on census records until the 1900 census.+++

NOTE -
Michigan did not require “by law” birth, marriage & death registrations until 1867.

1860 -
Name: Charles Rousseaux
Age in 1860: 28
Birth Year: abt 1832
Birthplace: Canada
Home in 1860: St Ignace, Mackinac, Michigan
Gender: Male
Post Office: Mackinac

Charles Rousseaux 28, Canada
Charlott Rousseaux 26, MI [possibly Indian]
Antoine Babineaux 9, MI
Macala Babineaux 1, MI
I am looking for the gravesite of my great-great-grandfather, John Bryant who lived in the Doddridge Arkansas area and may have been buried in the Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Bright Star, Ark. He was born around 1820 and died around 1879. I would appreciate any information anyone would have about him. He came from North Carolina originally, lived in Tennessee for a while before coming to the Doddridge area. I look forward to hearing from someone with information regarding this ancestor.

Thanks,

Dwayne Bryant

I'm following any lead I can and this is my newest. My 2nd great grandfather was Charles Rousseau born about 1832 in Canada or Michigan. He married Charlotte Martin in Michigan and they had 4 children together:
Joseph M Rousseau born about 1867
Charlotte J. Rousseau born about 1868
Charles Rousseau born about 1871 ***this is the one I'm hoping Chas Rouse/Rause is**
John Jonas Rousseau born May 17, 1875 in Beaver Island, Michigan---my great grandfather.

All four kids were born in Michigan and unfortunately this is all the information I know about this family with the exception of John Jonas.

I found in the 1900 Last Prairie, Miller, AR census a Chas. Rouse/Rause born in Michigan about 1870 and I'm hoping someone on this board may know some information on this person that will either confirm or prove it's not my relative.

Thanks,
Delayne

I am searching for a Miriam or Miram Slay married to a George W. Walker. The Slays keep cropping up in my searches.
I have seen Alfred and Nancy but I am thinking that you might try Miller County Arkansas and Cass and Bowie Texas as that is where I have been doing most of my searches.
I found Miriam and George but I am trying to find out who George's father was.
I really know nothing about Alfred. I have that he was born in Georgia about 1835. He married Nancy Gann (b. 1836) in Cobb County, Georgia. They then removed to Arkansas (according to information passed down to me).

Looking at an 1850 census record, it appears that Alfred could be a son of Noah and Nancy Cruce Slay. Did your Noah and Nancy live in Georgia in 1850?

Unfortunately, Miller County, Arkansas birth and death records are in Little Rock and none before 1914.

You might check Bowie County, Texas also. Texas Death Certificates are available at http://familysearch.org (free LDS site, just need to register to use). Also check with the City of Texarkana, TX - not all the death certificates were filed with the State. Texas starting requiring death certificates in 1903 but wasn't enforced until much later.

Michelle

Here is the link to Woodlawn Cemetery (African-American)(sometimes referred to as Stateline also) with links to pictures of the Brown's you are looking for:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txkusa/Cemeteries/Woodlawn...

This cemetery is actually between Stateline Cemetery and Woodlawn Cemetery, hence the confusion.

You might also try obtaining the death certificates from Little Rock, if they died in Arkansas. Or try the LDS site, https://familysearch.org/, to search for a Texas death certificate.

Michelle

Albert Ross Smith Birth: 4 Apr 1856 in AR Death: 30 Jun 1920 in Rocky Mound Cemetary, Fouke, Miller, AR

Martha Kemp was one of his wives who is in my lineage.

They would be my (3X) great grandparents. They had Eula M. Smith who married William C. Vandenberge. Then came Iona Joyce Vandenberge who married Lewis L. Smith (no relation). Then came my grandmother Marilyn June Smith who married Lester L. Harvey.

This all happened in and around Fouke, AR. We all still live in Genoa, AR just 10mins from Fouke, AR. My Grandmothers Family Bible has alot more info in it as well. I've been busy on my fathers side of the family but was talking to someone today about the land we all live on and which "smith" owned it all... fyi it's not Albert, but I found this and thought I'd put down what I have.

Albert's parents were John and Mary. They started off in Virginia, then Hot Springs, then Fouke. They were Church going people and farmers (mostly corn, cotton, hay, and bee's).

I don't know for sure when states started requiring counties to submit death certificates, not until almost 1920. So death certificates were few and far between. The repository as you call it, is the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics. If they don't have a death certificate then it does not exist. You could look for probate records in Miller County, such as a will, or some other type of probate record, that's about the only other recourse.

I am trying to find information on Alfred/Alford Slay and his (1st?) wife Nancy Gann Slay. Alfred was born about 1835 in Georgia and in 1850 was residing with his family in Cobb County, Georgia. Nancy Gann was born in Cobb County about 1836. By the 1860 census they were living in Sulphur Fork, Lafayette County. By the 1880 census, Alfred (shown as Alford) was still in Sulphur (though now in Miller County due to the division) with a wife named Martha.

Also, it appears that Nancy's younger brother, Parker Gann, was living with/visiting the family at the outbreak of the Civil War. He does not show up with them in the 1860 census, but he was there in 1861 and joined company D, 4th Arkansas Infantry.

Any information on the family, descendants, reasons for moving from Georgia to Arkansas, when/why Parker was in Arkansas with them would be greatly appreciated.

This is interesting, I don't think this is my direct line but I am wondering if it might be related. I am most interested in Lena Edwards McCurry. Her father was James Filmore Edwards and his father was Thomas K Edwards. That is as far as I or any one that I know have been able to take it.

I addition to being in the Miller County area around the dates you mentioned, Lena had a sister named Jewel. Obviously the Jewel you refer to would be a married name but I am wondering if my Jewel was named after an Aunt/Sister etc.

I'd guess there is a connection but currently no way to link the families. This line has been a challenge to me for many years.

Trying to locate information on the Edwards family of Miller County. Specifically trying to locate information on my great grandmother, Lena Edwards McCurry. The family moved from Nevada County, AR after 1890. Lena married Homer McCurry, Jan 1907 and she died after March 1908. She is believed buried in the Baker-McCurry Cemetery in Bowie County, TX. Any help or information appreciated

Arabella R "Belle" Jobe Bittle was born 18 Apr 1848 in Paris, Henry Tennessee. She died 1910 in Simpson, McIntosh, Oklahoma. She is buried in Pierce Cemetery next to Ora May Bittle. There is only a field stone marker. Also her son William is buried there with a field stone marker. Ora May Bittle is the only one with a stone. Arabella was married to John W "James" Bittle 20 Feb 1965 in Van Buren County, Arkansas.

Hope this helps.
