Hi Dorothy,

I live at Witter, Arkansas, which is about 9 miles from St. Paul. I have contacted a friend of mine who grew up there and currently lives near St. Paul and he says "yes, he knew Ronald Kidd". He's supposed to get back to me soon.

This friend doesn't use e-mail. Would you prefer to talk to him on the telephone or would you prefer to write him a letter?

Joy Russell
Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society

Does anyone know who to contact for access to the Thomas-Drain Cemetery? A lady who lived just west of the cemetery used to have a key to the gate. It's been a long time since I went there. Also, would like to find out if my g-g grandparents (Joseph and Mary "Polly" Bailey Thomas) old homeplace is accessable by the landowner. They were buried there and two of my elderly aunts were allowed to visit years ago. Their property was located in township 14N, 27W, Sec.4 East 1/2 of the SE corner. Many of the Thomas relatives lived in the same area.

Hi, Sandy. My husband descends from Ellis Faubus and Obedience ("Biddie")Ann Parsley. I assume your Sam W. is a brother of Biddie Ann's. I have the following information on him:

1870 census: London, Laurel Co., Kentucky - Living next door to father (Alexander) and brother (Moses Lilburn) Parsley. Children shown on census: Margaret (b:1864/KY); Eliza J. (b:1866/KY; Sarah E (b:March 1870/KY).

Samuel W. & Sarah E. Parsley and daughters, Mattie & Martha A. are all buried in Patrick Cemetery, Patrick, Madison County Arkansas. The daughters, twins, were born & died on same day (1/12/1872 - 7/26/1897) and S.W. Parsley died just one month later.

We live in Texas and have visited the Patrick Cemetery in Ark., which is how we got this information.

You may already have all this since your post. This is all I have - I hope it helps. Do you have further generations going back? We have Alexander (father of your Samuel & our Obedience) - then Moses, Abraham II, Abraham I. If you'd like to share further information, please reply to:
cherylhand@cableone.net

Thank you,
Cheryl Hand

This was from Madison Co., AR an affidavit of John C. Calico dated May 11, 1892 Re: Indian Blood

"Personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the State and County aforesaid J. C. Calico, personally and well known to me whose character is good for truth and veracity, after being duly sworn deposeth and sayeth, my age is seventy-five years, my Post Office address is Wesley, Arkansas, Madison County.

In the matter of the claim of George W. Vaughan, for citizenship or right in the Cherokee Nation, the affiant states as follows: I am personally acquainted with George W. Vaughan, and know him to be the son of Jackson Vaughan, whom I was also acquainted with, and know him to be the son of Samuel Vaughan, with whom I personally acquainted. I knew him to be the son of Feriby Vaughan, who was my Grandmother, her maiden name being Feriby Benton. She married William Vaughan, my Grandfather. Feriby Benton was the daughter of my Great Grandmother Benton whose maiden name was Looney, who was Cherokee by blood.

The affiant further states that Feriby Benton married William Vaughan in the Old Cherokee Nation in Tennessee. And Grandmother Vaughan told me or stated to me that her mother was Cherokee by blood, whose maiden name was Looney. I also heard Uncle Daniel Vaughan acknowledge to the Cherokee blood in him to a man named Lowel in 1828, who was selling goods at Cane Hill in Washington County which was a territory at that time.

The affiant further sayeth not."

Signed John C.
Sorry, posted too fast. They came about 1920. My father was born in 1917 in Richland Twnsp, Arkansas and the 1920 Cencus has his grandarents in Park Hill, OK as well as a lot of the relatives. I beleive that my father (Vaughn) actually came directly to NM. His father was a teacher at the Pinnacle School and then worked for the railroad after about 1915, was transfered to Albuquerque at one point due to his wife's Tuberculosis.

Much of my grandmother's family went to OK, name is Smith so hard to track, but then to Moline, Ill. Chaffins were also involved.

I am interested that Callico's and Vaughn's were cousins. My grandfather Vaughn was an only child, so I wonder if it was through his mother, a Lacy. I have found Olinger's who are cousins and lived in Arkansas as well.
Thanks

I will watch for those names. Just watched "Oklahoma Passages" again after about 5 years. Tahlequah is the main site for the Cherokee Nation still today in OK. In that town is the Boudinot Cem. where some of my husband's Calico distant cousins are buried. Elias Boudinot was a brother of Gen. Stand Waite CSA the only Cherokee promoted to that level. Elias Boudinot was ordered by John Ross to be killed because of breaking Cherokee Law of selling GA land to whites without council approval. Stand Waite did the same thing of selling his land but wasn't killed for some reason. I am thinking Park Hill was where Stand Waite, Elias Boudinot, others of that group settled after leaving GA before the "Trail of Tears".

I did see while working on the Calico/Vaughn family that my husband's Calico cousins were helping their Vaughan cousins prove bloodlines for Dawes Rolls 1880-1890 sometime around there. I don't remember if it was proven or not, have to check on that. Just a little OK history, it may mean something to you or not.

Why they came to Park Hill and Talequah will depend on the dates they came and are they Cherokee?

Kay Fleming

The Vaughn and Smith family also came into Park Hill, OK and the Tahlequa area. I don't know why, but suspect it has something to do with railroad expansion. If you have informaiton about this family, I would appreciate it. We are especially looking for information on Cora (Smith) Vaughn mother, Ella H. Reynolds.

Thanks

Yes I would really like to see the cemetery list if you have it. Some of the Calico family came into Oklahoma, it was Indian Territory when they arrived. Some are buried in Tahlequah, OK at the Boudinot family cemetery. Now we are living in the NE corner of OK and hope to to see for ourselves. Seems to be a good bit of Cherokee blood especially through the Vaughn/Calico lines.

Please email me directly. I would love to share and compare. My children are great grandchildren of Cora's sister Alice Smith-Box on their father's side of the family. I have found Arthur and Ella very hard to track prior to their marriage. I have found some Reynolds families in TN but can't conclude any as the right family. A living family member told me she thought they actually married in TN but I tend to think it probably occurred in Arkansas. Perhaps Ella was born right near the state line and actually born in Arkansas. Any thoughts you have would be most welcome.
pix8560@yahoo.com

He was the son of Arthur Cornett (KY) and Sarah Deaton (KY) He previously lived in Stone and Barry Co MO. Would also appreciate if anyone has any information as to where his mother is buried. Family history has her dying in the late 1890's in MO, but could have been Arkansas or a nearby state. Family seems to have moved a lot.

There are Calico's on the Pinnicle Cemetary listing, as well as Ledbetters and also on the White River Twhp census for 1900 and 1910, check both districts on that census. I remember seeing the names as I was looking thru that census. Also, Tucker's I beleive. email me if you would like me to send the cemetary list, it is just a list.
Re: Lee Cemetary

Hi,
The Lee Cemetery is in a VERY remote area, in the edge of a hay field overlooking War Eagle River. You must go through private property for about 1/2 mile to get to it and if you do not have a guide, you will most likely not find it. The Lee family received land patent documents in 1840 on this property which was part of their original homestead. The description of the homestead is: E 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 34, Township 16 North, Range 26 West, in Madison County, Arkansas.

If you want to pin-point it on a map, the GPS coordinates are: N 36.01120 W 093.72146

At this time, the only legible tombstones in the cemetery are two large "coffin-shaped" stones which cover the top of the graves. These two stones have the names Robert Lee and J. J. Lee on them.

These people are also thought to be buried there:
Lucy WEAVER Lee; Robert Lee, Jr. & his wife, Rebecca JACKSON Lee; Allen Lee; David Tobe Jackson; Jester Maxwell & his wife, Baley LEE Maxwell.

At one time it was said that between 30-40 graves could be seen, but the last time I was there in 2007 there were only about a dozen visible graves.

Are you related to the Lee family? If so, we may be cousins. Robert Lee, Sr. was my 4th great-grandfather.

Joy Russell

Hi Andrea,
I don't have this family completely entered in my Family Tree Maker, but I think that the children you are asking about may be the children of George Washington McChristian, a brother of John Henry. George W. died in December 1917.
Maybe this will at least give you a hint to where to look.

Joy Russell

Hi,

As you probably know, the Lane Cemetery hasn't had any burials in it for many, many years. There are a lot of little cemeteries like this in Madison County, and they have no caretaker. The Lane Cemetery had been abandoned for many years until several years ago when volunteers cut sprouts and somewhat cleaned it up.

We had a tremendous ice storm in this area in January of this year and there are few places that limbs are not down. Since there is no caretaker for this cemetery, there is no money to hire someone to clean it up. The cleanup would have to be done by volunteers and/or by someone hired to do the cleanup by someone interested in the cemetery.

Joy Russell
Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society

Re: Killion/Killian Family from Tennessee

Joy,

Our lines might not be the same, but I appreciate any help you might provide me. I want to finish off his family as truthfully as I can.
The John Killion I am looking for was born 1842 Claiborne County, TN., son of James and Anna Peck Killion. He is no blood relation to me, but his children with Esther "Easter, Hetty, Hattie" Ann Corbin b. 1838 Claiborne County would be very distant cousins. He raised 3 of her Evans children, Martha A, William Riley and Alfred Caloway and had at least four children with her, Sarah A, Eliza, Amanda Bernetta, Sterling G., before her death in 1882 Claiborne County. I've found Sterling G. single 40 on the 1910 census in Oregon I believe, but never again. There is a Killion grandchild living with a Morris family in 1920 Oregon. There is a William F. Killion attributed to her, but he was born in 10/1893, not really a possibility since according to church records she died 6/1882. Plus on the 1900 census he claims 4 marriages.
If I have the right one, he was married to Mahala McBee, Esther Corbin Evans, Unknown mother of William and Margaret Green in Arkansas.
There is a William F Killion on the 1900 and 1910 Madison County Census near John Killion and Margaret who in 1900 had been married 10 years. Supposedly he came to Arkansas to be with some of his brothers.
I had someone tell me today that the cemetery has fallen tree branches and poison ivy in it, the braches are resting on some of the headstones. I'd really appreciate it if someone could please help me, I live over in Denver, CO.

Thank you, Joy, for the timely response.

I'd be willing to make a donation if someone local could watch over it. I do that down in St Paul for the Riverside Cemetery.

Do you think this would be possible?

I'm hoping to get back over there sometime this year.

I was just there last week and Lucretia is buried in the Wesley Cemetary. It is about 15 minutes from Huntsville. My dad lives in Springdale and we wentto clean the markers with vinegar and brushes. Her brother Maxwell is my GGG grandfather. My dad goes every 6 months to maintain the markers. My GG grandfather named a daughter Lucy in honor of Lucretia.
Derrick Lawson
