infor on great great grandparents

I'm trying to find information on my great great grandfather Thomas Cawon. All the information I have comes from the 1880 Lonoke County, AR Federal Census. Here's what I know. He was born around 1822 In Tennessee and married a lady named Bitsy or Betty from Alabama. She was born in 1844. Bisty was very light skinned and may have been the child of slaveowner or part Native American. Bitsy and Thomas's first son Robert Cawon was not his biological son. The boy's father was an Alabama slave owner who Bitsy or Betty belonged to. The 1880 census shows that the boy was born in 1866 in Arkansas. He could have been born in Alabama. The rest of their children were born in Arkansas. My great grandfather William Henry Cawon born around 1875 was their 3rd son. He married a lady named Anna Legrand in 1900 Creek Indian Territory Oklahoma. I would like to learn more about my great great grandparents. Any information at all would be more than I likely know. I would also like to know more about my great grandmother's parents David (abt. 1847 in North Carolina) and Mary Legrand (abt. 1851 in Arkansas). Thanking anyone in advance who can help me.

Recently, the obit for Nancy Boone Beard was generously transcribed and posted on the Boone message board:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.boone/3525.1.1/mb.ashx?r...

An excerpt from the obit refers to John Cox:

"... For several years after the war, her husband and Mr. Griffin did business at Brownsville. Later on Mr. Beard entered the firm of Goodrum Bros., the style being Goodrum Bros and Beard; and did an extensive business situated where Dan Daniels now keeps. Afterwards he began business for himself just east of John Cox, the sign, T. C. Beard, may yet be seen. The family removed from Brownsville to Lonoke in 1871 and Mrs. Beard lived here continuously since..."

I'm a direct descendant of Nancy Boone Beard and her daughter Ella Ann Morrison Beard who married W. P. Fletcher. Their daughter, Mary Fletcher, married her third cousin, Minos Lumpkin Fletcher Cox. I have the ancestry of M.L. Fletcher Cox, but I'm wondering if there is a relationship between his line and the John Cox listed in Nancy's obit?

Thanks in advance.

I would like to know if someone might know Billy Tanner of Lonoke. I met him in 1973 at the skating rink there in lonoke and last seen him in the summer of 1977 and would just like to say hi. I am in no way looking to cause any problems for him if he is married that is not what this is about. I am from Lonoke and have lived in California for 31 years but was back there to visit in 04, 05, 06 and did not know how to contact him. If there is anyone that can give me any information that would be great. I do know that he did live on Lingo Rd and I believe that he still does.

Thank you for any info. you may have.

Here is my email address, sadiegirl0002@yahoo.com

My name is Carolyn Smith

Eason family of Lonoke, Arkansas

My great-grandfather, James Allen EASON, was born in Lonoke, Arkansas on August 12, 1849 and died in Rusk County, Texas on January 22, 1908. His parents were George W. and Mary (maiden name unknown) EASON, natives of Tennessee, born about 1820 and 1825, respectively. His siblings were brothers Dallas EASON and "Bud" EASON, both born after 1850. His grandparents evidently lived with their son or nearby. They were Reddick and Nancy (Modglin?) EASON originally from North Carolina.

I am interested in any kind of information about George and Mary EASON and Reddick and Nancy EASON. I know George and Mary are listed on the US Census for ]1850 and 1860 as residents of Pulaski County (part of which became Lonoke County); Redding does not appear on the 1860 census, it seems safe to presume that he had passed away by then. There are also records showing property purchased or taxes paid on such by Reddick.

Does anyone know anything (e.g., graves, etc.) about these good people, including Dallas and Bud?
I will sincerely appreciate any documented data. Thanks.

I am looking for information on Cornelia Lee or Charles E Lee of Lonoke, Lonoke, Arkansas. The LDS data base shows a 1880 census of Cornelia Lee, Age 51, widowed living there with 6 kids. Natham - 19, James A. -16, Charles E. -14, Frank T. -12, Lillie Lee -10, and Eva Lee - 7. All kids were listed as being in school during the census. I believe Charles E. Lee is my grandfather Charles E. Lee dad but haven't found the cross link to connect yet. The first Charles Lee was 14 during the census and grandfather was born in 1885 which would have made him 19. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me where someone might have been buried if they lived in Hamilton Township in January, 1900? Nancy Harville and her son, Robert, both died in that month, and we are trying to locate their graves. Also, is there a paper that might have carried an obituary for the two of them? Thanks in advance.

Looking for information on a Margarete Ketchum, not sure if I spelled her name correctly. Her maiden name was Dawson and if she is alive she would be about 100 years old. Her father and my grandfathers father were brothers and were from Nelta Texas. In the early 1900s, my grandfather Leon and brothers Murray, Dennis and Garland Dawson went to Lonoke to work cattle with their uncle. There was a picture made of the four of them on horseback and was titled DAWSON LAND AND CATTLE COMPANY. I am looking for that picture or maybe a copy of it. Would also like to know what the history of the Dawson family and where they are buried at. Any help would be appreciated.
I am looking for the name of an MD who had his office either behind or above the pharmacy in Lonoke in 1948/1949. I was a child of 4 or 5 at the time and experienced a very bad accident that required massive stitching of one side of my face. I had been playing with a friend whose father had a store on South Main Street. They had a pony in the back "yard". As I round the corner I ran into a barbed wire fence which did great damage. The Doctor who my mother took me to was skilled enough to sew my face up and left little permenant scaring. I am thankful to this day that there was a small town doctor who was this good. I am also looking to find anyone who remembers the small store on South Main.

On the 1930 census they are listed on 3rd St. in trying to follow the route of the enumerator I went back several pages an saw that he covered his route via the following,

Reynold(s), Parkdale, West Pine, West Front, 3rd, Depot.

This seems straight forward until you look at a present day map and several streets have been bypassed thus my interest in old maps. It is also possible that another enumerator was leapfrogging to cover the excess streets.

In the 1920 Census they are listed on Beard St which I can not locate on a present day map. This is the first street listed on the survey (Sheet 1A) It is followed by

Oling Horse Rd, Sullivan Farm, Eberts Rd, Otas Rd.

Old maps or info on these locations would be appreciated.
I think both, Mote and Tom, may have been related to D. Mason who was born in 1857. D may have been initial for Devotion?? Would be grateful for any leads.
Edward W. King and John R. King families

I am a great great great grandson of Edward W. King, and a great great grandson of John R. King (b. abt 1857). The 1870 census shows both men and their familes in Lonoke County, at "Butler." In the 1860 and 1870 censuses, the Edward W. King family (including John) were at Fayette and Hawood Counties, Tennessee. In the late 1890s, John R. King moved to Texas, first to Hill County, then Comanche County. I know from old De Leon, Texas newspaper accounts that he continued to visit relatives in Arkansas into the 1920s or 30s.

I am interested in any information about this King family.

Also found him in the World War 1 Draft Registeration in Lonoke County, living in Carlisle. Belle is listed as wife. She is also in the Lonoke 1930 census, no Daniel. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 14, 1878. Both were married in Tennessee and moved to Kansas prior to 1910. Any help will be greatly appreciated

I am wondering if someone can help find my g-grand mother or g-gfather?
I have found her second marriage listed as:

Benjamin T Hicks, 32, married Mrs. Dora Brazzell, 22, on Jan 30,1907, page # M-506.

Her married name is frequently mis-spelled. It should be Braswell, but shows up on 1910 Soundex as Brazel for her orphaned daughter. So any variation might apply starting with 'Bra..'

Anything new on the above marriage would be great, but I specifically am seeking Anything on her first marriage to Tobe Braswell. They had a daughter, Freda, born Sept 19,1902, so going by Dora's age, they should have been married not long before.
'Tobe' may be a nickname, though that is all family ever heard him called.
Family says Dora was called 'Tina', and they think her maiden name may have been Hance, Hans, Hands or variation.
She is supposed to have been born in town of England, Lonoke co. This should be in 1884 if 2nd marriage record is correct.

I have been at a brick wall for years, so anything is appreciated.

Supposedly the reason he and his father moved to Oklahoma in the late 1800's was that the mother and several children died of an outbreak of fever....????
Death Certificate - Leatherman

I am trying to get a death certificate or medical cause of death for my brother, Rollie Maxey Leatherman. His tombstone in Lonoke Cemetary, of which I have a photo, states he was born Aug 1949 and died October 15, 1949. I was 5 at the time. I have spent my $10 and requested a certificate from Ark DOH, Division of Vital Records. I just heard back and they have no record of the death. My question at this point is "How do I now proceed?". There is a grave in Lonoke Cemetary as I have visited it. How do I go about finding out particulars about this grave? I assume a funeral home in Lonoke has most of the records. If so, who should I contact? I thank each of you in advance for any inforamtion to help me solve the problem.

Scans from Lonoke Democrat 1884-1940

For all those researching their Lonoke Roots:

I am posting weekly scans from The Lonoke Democrat 1884-1940 online at Webshots.com news articles about the residents.

http://community.webshots.com/user/EarlyLonoke

These include births, marriages, deaths, activities from the mundane to monumental. The old newspapers of the time posted such personal information that would never be written about today. I have covered years 1884-1904 so far, and the list is growing. I am concentrating on names associated with my family, but many articles will have other names mentioned as well.

The names list now include:
Austin, Bell, Boone, Boyd, Bradford, Chaplain, Cobb, Couch, Dowdy, Dunaway, Eagle, Elcan, Fletcher, Hall, Hamberg Herring, Herron, Kavanaugh, Munroe, Oldham, parker, Sanders, Swaim, Tate, Thompson, and Wheat.

I have also included scans of historical or just plain weird things that happened to give some sort of historical context to the news articles that our ancestors would have read.

Every couple of weeks I move the "scans of the week" from prior posting into their respective family group. Please share this site with any interested family or friends. If thereare names you would want me to look for please send an e-mail wrboone@gmail.com.

There is also a yahoo group for the genealogy of Lonoke County at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lonokecountygenealogysite/

Enjoy...

Bill Boone

James Franklin Goodwin
I'm trying to locate a death date/burial location for James. I can pin down his death to within a period of two years, and am reasonably confident that he died in Lonoke. On 10-APR-1898, he has a Lonoke marriage record to Virginia Bell (there'a actually an earlier marriage in Lonoke for them on 17-Nov-1884 as well. My theory on the duplication is that she was <16 at the time of the first one and the legality was in question).

By the census taken on June 4th, 1900, Virginia has been widowed. She and their son are living in Hamilton at that time. I cannot imagine the family having moved from the county and back in such a small timeframe, so presumably his death, and perhaps burial location are there.

Any information on James would be appreciated.

I am looking for information about the AIrhart families in Lonoke. Some of them are my great-grandfather's nephews.

Edward Airhart, born 1881 in Arkansas (son of James Melvin and Elizabeth Hyler Airhart) lived in Lonoke and died in 1929.

Josephine Airhart, also James and Elizabeth's daughter, married Jasper Edwards and lived briefly in Lonoke before returning to Conway County.

There was another older Airhart (may have been James Melvin's brother - he was older than James Melvin who was born in 1857) who may also have lived in Lonoke.

The Airharts were originally from South Carolina and moved to Arkansas in the 1800s. Some of them may or may not have been listed as white.

Any marriage, residence, or other information greatly appreciated.

I am searching for information about Isaac Halivus Vanhouten who lived in Jefferson County, Arkansas and also Lonoke County. I am trying to verify that he and his wife Virginia Lee (Manson) lived there and perhaps where Isaac was buried. My grandmother said he was a school teacher in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and they had three children, Alma born abt. 1895, Isabelle born 1894-1896 and Hal born abt. 1897. She said Isaac died in a flash flood there. Isaac disappears off the census in 1900 and his last child was born about 1897 so I gather his death was 1897-1900. Grandma said he spoke several languages and was from Holland but census records for the children state their father was born in Indiana. I am unable to find any hard information about him using the internet search engines (ancestry.com-census etc).
Any assistance or clues on where to look is greatly appreciated as this search has been going on for several years with not much luck. Thank You! Tena
I am looking for information on Levi Herod listed on the 1850 Marion County census. He is listed with his wife Rhodice, daughter Elizabeth, son James and another orphan child. I am looking for information on Elizabeth, she possibly married a Cooper. The Herod family purchased land in Prairie County in 1857-58 and moved there, but there is no record of Elizabeth moving with them. They are on the 1860 and 1870 census for Prairie County, but no Elizabeth, but there is a Dica P. Cooper (also known as Dicy)age 5 on the 1860 census and age 15 on the 1870 census. Dicy later married a Dorsey, they are buried in Sumner Cemetery near Cabot AR.
I am interested in locating Elizabeth and any other information on this family while in Marion, Lonoke, Prairie or Pulaski Counties.
Eason and McNew Families

Hello to everyone. I am looking for information about my great grandparents, Daniel McNew and Penhenia Ellen Eason
McNew. The only thing that I know for certain is that they lived in a "now non-existent" town in Lonoke County by the name of Panola. I understand that it was where Lonoke, AR is now located. They were married in 1872 and had five children: Mary Etta, Daniel, George, Huston, and Ollie McNew. I have some information regarding their children but cannot find anything about the parents. Daniel and Penhenia, aka. "Ellen", lived in this area all of their lives, but some of their children did move to other states. If anyone can help locate even the tiniest bit of information I would be grateful.

Does any one have a listing for the prople buried in Walter Chapel Cemetery? I am looking for the information on the grave stone of Lester L Polk and his wife Dollie Phillips Polk. I think Lester Polk died about 1963 and Dollie died abut 1975. Thanks for any help in this matter.
Bob Turner, Helena, Arkansas
