This is the "general search page" for LDS site.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
The inforamtion you will get from a simple search on the search page, may be accurate or may be totally incorrect.
Some of these records are "actual records" while others can be "undocumented records" submitted by members.
So dont take everything you find as FACT, UNLESS its a documented record.
They also have a tab at the top of the page, which says
"Family History Library Catalog"
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...
This is where you would search their available films, for publications or vital records (etc) for a specific area or surname.
It will provide you with film numbers, so that you can order the film and check it out at your local FHC.
There are many ways to do a search on the Library Catalog page and you just have to experiment to try to find what you may be looking for.
They have a HUGE impressive storehouse of genealogical information.
They have preserved a tremendous amount of family history and continue to add to it on a regular basis.
