Joseph ALTMAN - Sadie LASKER marriage - 1 January 1913 - St. Louis

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Thursday, January 2, 1913

THEY WED WITH NEW VOWS.

St. Louis, Jan. 1. -- Every day is to be a New Year's day in the
calendar of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph ALTMAN, who were married
yesterday morning just as the bells throughout the city were
chiming forth their greeting to a new year.

Miss Sadie LASKER, daughter of Rabbi M. L. LASKER, and
Joseph ALTMAN of Pine Bluff, Ark., chose that hour for the
beginning of their married life and incidentally they formulated
a set of New Year's resolutions which are designed to make
their life a perpetual joy.

The agreement of the young couple never may be set aside
by either on the ground of failure of consideration, as the New
Year's obligations they assumed in addition to the marriage
contract are based on mutual promises.

The bride resolves:
I will never nag my husband.
I shall try to make myself useful to him in every way.
I shall never meddle in his business affairs.

The husband resolves:
I shall not talk to my wife when I am angry.
She shall have her own bank account.
She shall run the house; I my business.
I shall not concern myself with her political beliefs.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo8

Reed[Reid]/Lewis Family

My great grandfather was Louis Franklin Reid (commonly known as Frank). He was born in Arkansas I belive in July of 1872. He was married to Eva (Evia or Evias) Lewis, who was born in Reidsville, NC I think in March of 1876. Grandma Eva died in Jefferson County I think in 1921.
According to census records, they were married in 1896; they lived in Plum Bayou Township in 1900 and in 1910; they lived in Dudley Lake Township in 1920; their oldest daughter, Edner, lived with them in 1920 as a 22 year old widow. I know Grandfather Louis lived in Pine Bluff for some time after Eva passed away. He moved to Oklahom with his daughter Mary in his later years of life where he died I think in 1953. Louis and Eva had nine children: Edner [Edna] Hill (who lived in Pine Bluff most of her life and died there), Georgia, Louis Frank Jr, Mary (who moved to Oklahoma), Jessie, James, Albert [who changed his name to Robert/Bob] who moved to East St. Louis, Il and then later to Chicago where he passed away a few years ago, Seartrice B (who stayed in Arkansas, mostly Little Rock, where she passed away just last month, and Columbus (most often referred to by his surname Reid) who moved to East St. Louis at a young age and passed away there five years ago.
I know this post is lengthy, but I can't seem to find any more info on my great grandparents. I'm hoping someone will recognize some of the family members names and provide some insight. If you have any info at all or any advice, please email me at ttrwhit@bellsouth.net

Benjamin Campbell JARVIS; 1916-2008

Benjamin Campbell JARVIS: Feb. 22, 2008

One of the last surviving World War II submarine commanders, retired Navy Capt. Benjamin Campbell JARVIS, died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on Feb. 22 at his home in Fairfield at the age of 91. His wife's cousin, the late Mary Edith Lane (nee Tuttle,) a San Diego native, told her daughter he was the tallest man in World War II submarines. He was over 6'3.”

A highly decorated submariner, JARVIS was awarded the Navy's highest combat medal, the Navy Cross, for “extraordinary heroism in enemy controlled waters,” and cited 21 times for actions before the enemy. Some of his exploits are recounted in several books, a movie and a television series of the 1950s.

JARVIS' World War II service commenced with battleship duty in the North Atlantic. When war was declared, JARVIS transferred to the submarine service. As a submariner, he completed 14 wartime submarine patrols in the Western Pacific, including three in command. While JARVIS was aboard, his submarines made 28 successful torpedo attacks against Japanese men-of-war and merchantmen, as well as repeatedly delivering troops and supplies, providing gunfire support, and life guard services in enemy held territories. Besides sustaining numerous submerged depth charge attacks, his submarines were bombed several times on the surface, holed by gunfire on three occasions, and ran aground twice in forward battle areas. As commander of the submarine USS Baya, he was awarded the Navy Cross for his night surface engagement on May 2, 1945 described at the time of the award as “one of the outstanding attacks of this war,” which culminated in the destruction of “an entire convoy.” JARVIS was also commended five times for peace time services.

After the war JARVIS performed extensive duty at sea, including the command of submarine and amphibious types of ships and staff duty on two fleet and three force staffs. He also performed observer and special mission duties in the Navies of Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Peru, Turkey and the Japanese Self Defense Force. Upon retirement from his 34-year Navy career, JARVIS served as director of product assurance, Campbell Industries in San Diego, for well over a decade in the shipbuilding and ship repair business.

He was from a pioneer Arkansas family whose lineage covered 35 generations through the George Washington lines, emigrating from England to Virginia in 1657. He grew up on cotton plantations in Arkansas where much of the farm work was still done using mules and his formal education began with six years in a one-room school house.

In his 91-year lifetime, his friends and acquaintances ranged from former slaves to presidents and royalty. During his Navy career he integrated the first submarine, assisted in the shift to a nuclear-powered submarine force, and saw United States Naval officers in space. JARVIS was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, the Navy War College and did graduate work in London. At the Naval Academy JARVIS was a varsity football player and wrestler, and commanded the Color Company in 1939, the top military honor for a graduating midshipman. Later he returned to Annapolis and served on the faculty as director of physical education. When he retired, he and his wife returned to their home on Glorietta Bay in Coronado.

He was predeceased in 2006 by his wife of 62 years, Cecilia Patricia Whitby. He is survived by his daughter Sharon (Conrad,) a retired lawyer of Stockton; two sons, Whitby (Carol) of Castro Valley, an archaeological ranger, and Benjamin of Mountain View, an aerospace engineer; and five grandchildren. His cousin's daughter, Tommi Lane Adelizzi (Robert) lives in Point Loma, near the submarine station where he was stationed for many tours of duty.

Capt. JARVIS was formerly a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Coronado, where is his aunt, the late Edith Tuttle Webster, served as organist for 30 years. Private committal, with a family celebration of his life, will be on his wife's family's property at Tuttle Lake near Lake Tahoe. Gifts to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society are suggested.

As published in the online edition of the Coronado Eagle & Journal (Coronado, CA), March 20th, 2008

James and Molly Harrison, Jefferson Co. Arkansas

I am looking for information about my wife's paternal grandmother and great-grand parents, and their ancestors. Her Great-Grand parents are James and Molly Harrison, found in Jefferson Co., Arkansas in the 1900 and 1910 Census. Her Great Grandmother is from Georgia and her Great Grandfather is from Arkansas according to the 1900 census.

Her Grandmother is Ruby Lee Harrison Reel (b. Dec 16, 1899, Jefferson, Arkansas; d. Jul 29, 1969, San Bernardino, California), her grandfather is James Matthew Reel (b. July 16, 1894, Pope, Arkansas; d. March 19, 1936, Yell, Arkansas). Her Grandparents were found in Pulaski Co. in 1920 and eventually moved to Carden Bottom, Yell Co., via a sojourn in Pope Co.

Ruby Lee Harrison had numerous siblings including: Noah Wylie Harrison, William Fletcher Harrison, and Fred Harrison. I understand that the Noah Wylie Harrison family lived in Humphrey, Arkansas Co., AR in the 1930s and that his mother lived with them for a while in the late 30's or early 40's.

The year of Ruby Lee’s birth is in question, with the 1900 census and the California death index giving different years, 1899 and 1896 respectively.

I would appreciate any information concerning any of the James Harrison family, Molly’s maiden name and proper given name (Molly comes from the 1900 Census), the children, their spouses, and the families’ ancestors.
Hello,

I am seeking information about Frank DAIL born 1865 in Missouri and his wife Clara Bylers born TN 1881. I found mention of the obituaries from the Obituary Index at the Pine Bluff Public Library.

According to the Arkansas Death Index Frank DAIL died 28 March 1933 in Jefferson Co.

The obituary index at the library did not bring up the name of Frank Dail. But did bring up the following:
Dall, Frank 03-29-1933 Pine Bluff Commercial - on microfilm.
Dall, Frank 03-28-1933 Pine Bluff Commercial- on microfilm.

I'm assuming that DALL is the misspelling of DAIL since the date 03-28-1933 corresponds to the date noted in the Death Index for Frank DAIL.

I am also seeking an obit for his wife Clara Byler DAIL. Obituary Date, 12-07-1965. Newspaper: Pine Bluff Commercial - Hardbound.

My research indicate that Clara BYLERS was first married to unknown NORMAN. After his death she married Frank DAIL.

I am hoping that the obituaries will contain mention of their families, and information about where they are buried.

Note: The name is correctly spelled DAIL with the accepted variation of DALE.

Best wishes and my thanks.

Rachel

Looking for: THOMAS SKIDMORE

My great-grandfather’s older brother Henry Lightsey/Litzsey Jr. married Elizabeth a.k.a. Eliza Counts in the late 1870's while they were residents of Newberry SC. In the late 1880's they and their extended families relocated to Arkansas’s Cleveland and Grant counties. The only documentation found that verifies Henry Jr.’s arrival was located in 1896 legal papers of the Grant County Courthouse. His apparent death was not realized until his widow re-married.

Finding the marriage license joining Thomas Skidmore, and Elizabeth Lightsey ages 39 and 41 respectively in holy matrimony in 1900 was located in the Jefferson County Courthouse. This newly found document provided me with Elizabeth’s new surname enabling me to expand my search for her. With the help of old archived newspaper files belonging to the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Library I realized that Mr. Skidmore became a widower within eight year of marrying Elizabeth. Her obituary states that she passed-away on 23 Jul 1908.

Arkansas census records indicate that Thomas Skidmore remained a resident of Vaugine/Pine Bluff at least 12 years after Elizabeth’s death . . . 1910 through 1920. Realizing that it is a long-shot it is my endeavor to locate family members of Mr Skidmore in an attempt to discover what might have taken place in the short eight years they were married.. If you are related to or have information on Thomas Skidmore please respond to this message or contact me at Arlander79@aol.com

I'm looking for any descendants of a Lula Burrage. Lula was originally from Dekalb, Kemper Cty, MS and she married a Henry Burrage Sr who died in 1936. Lula was the sister of my gggrandfather Joseph Goodwin. Most of what I know about Aunt Lula comes from a Pine Bluff Commercial article commemorating her 100th birthday in 1986. She is said to have 6 children only one of whom was still living at the time of the article, Henry Jr. Joseph Goodwin migrated from MS to Pine Bluff, AR around 1916. I'm not sure if this is when the Burrages also left MS, but at some point the family settled in Pine Bluff, AR. If anyone has any info for me it will be much appreciated.

I am searching for any information on my great great grandparents Daniel and Mary Jones, especially the names of their parents. Daniel was born appx 1877 in Arkansas according to the 1910 and 1920 census, exact location unknown to me. He married Mary (also called Molly) Hiller appx 1899. Mary was born appx 1876 in South Carolina according to the 1910 and 1920 census, exact location unknown to me. I do not know where they were married.

In the 1910 census they resided with 2 children (2 yr old Samual and baby Liliy later called Rosie) in Cleveland County, Arkansas. In 1920 census they were in Fordyce, Dallas County, Arkansas with 3 children (9 yr old Liliy, my great grandmother Minnie at 7 yrs old, and 5 yr old Haskel). Daniel was an ordained minister in the Church of God In Christ. Daniel died probably around 1924 in Fordyce and Mary later moved to Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas where she died around 1947. It seems much of the family settled in Pine Bluff.

I do not know Daniel's siblings' names or if he had any. Mary had at least one sister named Jane. I'm hoping someone else is researching this branch of the family and can shed some light on Daniel and Mary's parents' names. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Looking for Townsend ancestors in Pine Bluff Area

Hello,

I am looking for descendants of Emily Townsend. Emily was a Black (or Mulatto) woman who lived during the late 1800's. She died around 1904. She owned property in Cleveland County but many of her descendants lived in the Pine Bluff area. She had several children named: Jerry (wife Betty) Townsend, William (wife Eliza Woods) Townsend, Hezikiah (wife Marietta Rowland) Townsend, Belle (husband Jackson Booker) Townsend; Annie (husband Robert Johnson), Henrietta Townsend, and my ancestor Mary Ann (husband Wiley Stocker) Townsend.

Emily was a homesteader in Cleveland county but she also had another plot of land that was originally part of Jefferson County before it became part of Cleveland County. Needless to say I am quite interested in knowing how a female of color was able to aquire property so soon after emancipation. I am trying to find out who owned the land before she got it and how she got it. Like I mentioned I am not sure if she was enslaved so the answer to this property ownership question will also help ascertain her status.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Cristal Simmons
Chicago

Wilson, Elias and wife Groce, Fanny

I am looking for additional family information regarding Elias Wilson and wife Fanny GROCE Wilson.

Elias Wilson: 1796- NC
Fanny Groce Wilson: 1803 GA

I believe they had 6 children:

Story ann; married Wm Hopkins

Dudley Wilson married Martha Ann [her maiden name WILSON] in Pontotoc MS. -I am researching this line. -

Other children: Thomas, John, Josephus, were CW soldiers in the 18th Regiment, AR INF.

Josua N Wilson

Dudley Wilson bought property in Lincoln Co in 1861; he died of wounds received in CW battle leaving widow Martha and small children.

Martha Ann and her children moved to Bell Co TX, and then to Brown Co TX. - I lost track of Martha Ann after the 1880 census in Brown Co TX.

I would like to know more information about the death/burial for Elias and wife Fanny.

Believed: Elias died previous to 1870.

From Census records I noted that Fanny lived with her married daughter Story ann and her husband Wm P HOPKINS.

I believe Fanny died prior to 1900 but do not know.

Theory: It is possible that this WILSON - GROCE family is related to the WILSON - COBB family as I believe this lineage also lived in this County and removed to Bell Co TX about 1867. Any, any information at all would be appreciated regarding this possible family relation.

I look forward to reading a reply soon about any of the family names mentioned here.

Thank you,
Rachel

I am looking for the household, descendants of Edgar Lewis Brown. I know of only two of his children, my grandfather, William Henry and his twin Frank, who were born September 1869 in Jefferson County. Their mother's first name was Tena or Hannah. She was Native American (Said to be Native American) from Kentucky. I found Hannah in Jefferson County in 1870 with the twins and Eli. No husband was in the household nor was he listed but she is shown as being married.

They may have worked on a River Boat before coming to Arkansas. They did work for the Ward family.

William Henry married my grandmother in 1901 but I cant find him or his father before then.

Edgar was from Texas - maybe Galveston County. It's obvious someone was Native American. I have pictures of my grandfather and my uncles and mother all look Native American. He died the year before I was born.

EdgarLewis Brown lived in Fort Smith and worked at the Ward Hotel, then moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas wher he died in 1907. (No one can find a record of him being in Arkadelphia). Family says Edgar Brown was an A.M.E. Minister but can find no proof.

William Henry's twin brother Frank lived and died in Alma, Arkansas. He had a son nicknamed "Jabbo" who had a daughter named Eva who moved to California. Jabbo (whose name I don't know) died in Kansas City, Missouri according to some former Alma residents who knew him. Beyond that I know nothing.

Any information appreciated.

Thank you.

Maggie Ponds

I am trying to find a Grayson family that was in Pastoria, Jefferson County, Arkansas around 1873-1875. I don't know her first name. She was married to Enoch Boone Grayson. Cannot find a marriage. She was possibly Native American. She died about that time, probably in child birth. Enoch mentions in his military papers he had a first marriage and he spent a lot of time in Pastoria. They are not on any census. If anyone knows of a Grayson in that area that she could have been Native American and married a Grayson, please help. Thank you. Pat

Isaac Halivus Vanhouten

I am searching for information about Isaac Halivus Vanhouten who lived in Jefferson County. I am trying to verify that he and his wife Virginia Lee (Manson) lived there and perhaps where Isaac was buried. My grandmother said he was a school teacher in Pine Bluff and they had three children, Alma born abt. 1895, Isabelle born 1894-1896 and Hal born abt. 1897. She said Isaac died in a flash flood there. He disappears off the census in 1900 and his last child was born about 1897 so I gather his death was 1897-1900. Grandma said he spoke several languages and was from Holland but census records for the children state their father was born in Indiana. I am unable to find any hard information about him using the internet search engines (ancestry.com-census etc).
Any assistance or clues on where to look is greatly appreciated as this search has been going on for several years with not much luck.
Thanking you in advance!
Dr. Frederick Paschal Lytes or Dr. Frank B. Lytes in Jefferson County

I am searching for descendants of my Lytes relatives from Lexington County, South Carolina. My great-great grandmother was Caroline Lytes Thornton married to James Thornton. She was from the Hollow Creek community. My great-great grandmother Frances Lytes Ponds was the wife of Mark or Mike Ponds and they lived in the Gilbert Hollow community. Part of these two families moved to Conway County, Arkansas and there are more in Faulkner County. This included Henry P. and Juliann Lytes. Henry P. was the Justice of the Peace who married my great-grandparents, Bascom and Ida Ponds.

However, in Jefferson County I saw a Dr. Frederick Paschal Lytes, son of Anna Lytes. He was a dentist. The odd part is that later on he was Dr. Frank Lytes, a dentist. One WWI Draft Registration has a date of birth of March 31, 1884 and another has March 31, 1878. He is shown on the first one as the son of Anna Lytes and on the other as the husband of Pearl Lytes.

My question, after all that information overload, is this:
Is there a family connection between the South Carolina Lytes who settled in Jefferson County and the South Carolina Lytes who settled in Conway and Faulkner Counties? And if so......what is the connection.

Frances Lytes Ponds children were Bascom, Alice, Thomas, Cromwell, George, Estelle, Mary. Caroline Lytes Thornton's children were Columbus Frank, Green Willie, Henry, Benjamin Burrell, Pearson, Lizzie, and Mary Thornton that we know about.

Any light shed on this picture would be greatly appreciated.

Maggie Ponds

I am searching for any information on Dr. J.J. (Joseph John) Wright who lived in Pine Bluff between 1839 - 1854, born in NC in 1809. His was plantation actually where the University of AR @ Pine Bluff now sits and his grave is adjacent to the football stadium's parking lot. His sons, Hartwell and Joseph were the only children remaining in 1899, according to "Central Arkansas Counties Biographical and Historical Memoirs" by Goodspeed Publishing, 1899. I think he may be the son of John T. Wright and Elizabeth Scales, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel Scales from NC but cannot find any supporting info. Any help on this branch of Wrights will be welcome.

1870 AR Census - Jefferson Co., Generally Vaugine Twp

Does anyone know if there are sections of the 1870 census in Jefferson Co. that are missing? I know my Curlin family is in this Pine Bluff, Vaugine Twp. area based on deeds and tax records, but I cannot find them anywhere in 1870 census. I have found a similar situation with another family in SC in 1860 but you basically have to be very intimate with the county to know that detail. Is there someone in Jefferson Co. who has run across this same problem?
Thank you.
Kim Curlin Wettroth

The obituary for my ancestor, Sarah A. Pullen Lindsay says that she was buried in the family burying ground near Sherrill. The date of the obituary was 1893. Does anyone have an idea of where the John Randoph Lindsay property is in present day? There was a mention of the Dudley Lake area on the census. I realize this is somewhat sketchy, but would appreciate any help possible.
email: marilou1940@hotmail.com

What on Earth Happened to This Williams Family

Theodore Mortimer Williams supposedly died in Fort Bend, Co., TX in November 1861, according to what was written in the old family bible. This bible was handed down through Theodore's brother's line (in Arkansas).

Theodore was born in Chester District, SC in 1817, moved to Arkansas with his father during the 1840s. Per the 1860 census, he was still living in Jefferson Co., AR with his wife and seven children. Theodore was a Doctor by profession.

What is very strange about his family is that his children seem to have disappeared after the 1860 census. There is no sign of his sons George Davis Williams (b. SC in 1841), John D. Williams (b. AR ca. 1849), Edwin A. Williams (b. AR ca. 1852), Samuel L. Williams (b. AR ca. 1855), or Oliver P. Williams (b. AR ca. 1858) on any of the census records nationwide after 1860. I cannot even find a close match in the census records for any of these male children. It is a little unusual not to find anything considering the number of of them.

A number of questions about what may have happpened to them have come to mind. Could Theodore have taken his family with him to Texas and all of them died from an Indian attack? Or, could they have died from a epedimic in the Fort Bend County, TX area?

Any help with finding information on what happened to this family or with finding records such as Wills, Estate Papers, Burial Plots (for Theodore, his wife [Ellen Darby Williams], and/or his children) would be greatly appreciated.

A am seeking information on the husband of Rose Sharp who lived in Pine Bluff during the 1920s. He was called "Mac" Sharp but I do not know his real name. Rose Sharp was the head of household in the 1930 census and it is likely that Mac Sharp died sometime in the 1920s. Any information will be appreciated.

I need information on John F. HILL (b. 1876 in Texas; son of James W. HILL and Margaret J. HOLLINGSWORTH) and his wife, Ora (possibly BULLOCK) HILL. They lived in the Pine Bluff area in the 1940's and 1950's. Their children are Frank, George, and Bennie Joe. Is there an Arkansas death index for the 1950's? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
