I am trying to find a death record for the above mentioned, born in NC around 1860, possibly the son on John D. He widowed Julia Hinson, who is listed on the 1910 thru 1930 Census in Bird Township, Jackson Co. AR. They had several children, Lula, Maggie(tyer), Bell, jane, and Will. Will is shown on the 1910 census, page 50, and having Will, son, and Sam, nephew, and mother (maybe mother in law)

I was wondering if the divorce records listed on the Jackson Co. Arkansas Genweb site are available at the local courthouse in Newport? If so, what sort of information would they contain in addition to the names and dates?
If anyone has ever looked at these, I'd like to hear what they found.

Looking for the Birdsong Families that lived in Jackson Co AR (Newport).
Allie BIRDSONG (b. 1893 Ky/Tn Area d. 1973 Newport, Ar)
Loney Birdsong (maiden name unknown) (b. 1894 Ga d. 1976 Newport, Ar).

it is said that Loney was full-blooded Cherokee Indian and that her husband, Allie was atleast 1/2 to at most 3/4 Cherokee Indian. Also, that they traveled the Trail Of Tears to Oklahoma, and then later moved to Newport Ar.
I don't know if they were married when they traveled the trail to Oklahoma or not. Most likely not, as they would have been young. Also, I was told that they are buried in a small cemetary named McCall's. Does anyone have a index to this cemetary? Or anyone researching or know this family?

I was noticing on the Jackson Co. Library site that most newspaper microfilms don't start til about 1901.
Are there any older newspapers available anywhere and if so, where? I have several dates in the 1870s I'd like to look up if possible.

He is buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Nathaniel Carter Williams 1820-1879 Georgia, Arkansas, Illinois

N.C. "Carter" Williams came to Jackson County, Arkansas with his wife Martha by 1848 when he began purchasing land in T. 11 and 12 N, R. 2W. He owned over 400 acres of land by the civil war. He had the following children with Martha whose surname may have been Avery and whom he may have married in July 1837 in Carroll Co., Georgia.
1) Amanda Jane b. 1837 Ga.who married Wm. C. Cromwell 1854
2) William D. b. 1839 Ga. who married Julia A. Cromwell 1867
3) Martha b. 1842 Ga. m. Alfred Arnold 1859
4) Thomas 1843 Miss. m. Malie Myers 1867
5) James b. 1845 Ark. m. Sarah Bary 1866
6) John b. 1848 Ark. m. Mary Greenhaw 1871
7) Pinkey A. b. 1850 Ark. spouses: Martin V. Moodey, Cassius C. Van Wirt, residences in Ark., Ill, Iowa
8) Mary b. 1852 Ark.
9) Molly b. 1852 Ark.

During the civil war his house was used as a landmark for couriers taking messages to the generals that were encamped nearby.

By 1870, Carter Williams had left his Arkansas family and had gone to Illinois where he was reputed to own over 1000 acres. He was living with a woman named Maybel and a child, aged 2, named Mary during the 1870 census. A couple of years later, he was married to Ellen Ann Downey, with whom he had the children Carter, Jr., James H., Elmina "Minnie", and Nellie.

The local paper made mention of Carter coming into town to show off large bee hives, and also of his trips to Arkansas where a son had died and a daughter was missing. He was reputed to love race horses, and have a track on his farm. During a visit to Arkansas, he was murdered. A local paper said it was by a man named Barnes. His body was brought back to Illinois where he was buried on the North end of his farm with a race horse and a dog.

I am trying to find out more about this man and his family to see if it matches up with stories I've been told.

Minnie (surname unknown) born in Ireland, had sister Margaret who married Charles Smiley, a grocer in Worthington, OH (d 1924).

Robert Askew, Minnie M., and Ralph H. (noted above) at 418 Elm St., Newport.

Sara J. Askew [mother of Robert] at 115 Plum St., with her son John W. Jackson, grandson Poole Jackson, born May 1894 in AR, and a granddaughter Norella Sneat [sic; Snead?], born Mar 1884 in KY.

The grandson was Little Poole Jackson (b 5 May 1894 in Newport; d __ Aug 1978, Bradford, White Co, AR). He was in California in 1917 through 1930, his Social Security card was issued in New Mexico.

I am just starting research on the family of James W. & Mary "Polly" (Anderson) SMITH. They were married in Tennessee about 1829 and moved to Jackson Co., AR, in the mid 1830s. The children that I have, born in Tennessee or Arkansas, are: Miles P., George C., James C., Thomas, Thankful E., Oran H., and Albert A.

The family is listed in the 1850 census, but only James C. and family are listed in the 1860 census. I next find family members in the 1880 census in Fresno Co., CA.

According to the Tuckerman Newspaper, a William Price died at Russel Ferry. His residence was given as near Ruthford.
Both of these places are in Jackson Co.

I'm looking for any information on Joseph J Payne(b Ms 1866)of Bradford, Ark, who married Alice Josephine Scott in Jackson Co in 1893. Alice was my GGM. She married a Hill in either Red River or Grayson Co, Tx after Joseph Payne died in Ark(?)
Her mother was living with her in 1910 in Grayson Co, Tx. This is all the information I have. I didn't find Joseph listed in any of the cemeteries in Jackson Co.

William McCaslin died in about 1881 in Tuckerman. His wife was named Nancy and later married a J.N. Fletcher. They had at least two children named Jerry and Lula. Nancy had at least one child from her previous marriage; William Jasper McCaslin, who used the name Bill Fletcher later in life. I'm up against the wall on this guy! Can anyone help?

Edna's parents (Stephen Boyd VICK and Mary Elizabeth COFFMAN) lived in Jackson Co., but Edna could have been married in one of the surrounding counties. Edna died on 24 Oct 1917, but I don't know where. She is buried in the Vick Family Cemetery in Jackson Co., AR. My husband's grandfather (William Earl Bell) had a sister, Ida Venezuela Bell (b.1875 in Independence Co., Arkansas; d. 1954). She married James Gibbs (Gibb) Albright (b 1872, Izard County). I've learned that he was a school man (even had a grade school named for him) in Newport, Ark.

I know they had four kids: Alton Gray "Gray" Albright (I actually met him one time), Vertie (named for Ida's sister Vertula Eldridge), Lucile and Ruth.

I know they lived in the Cushman, Arkansas, area around 1900.

What I'm most interested in at this point us where are James and Ida buried? Any other particulars would be very welcome as well.

I'm looking for the following families in Jackson Co. Ark. from about 1899 to present.
Ripley, Plase, Ed, Maude, Stonewall, Buddie R. and Ollie P.they had 1/2 brother name Bise, Henry I. and William D.and also Albert L.Bise my g-grandfather. Albert lived in Franklin Co. Tx. Henry and Wm lived in Jackson Co. with their 1/2 brothers' and sister. Their mother is Mary E. Gibbs. She remarried in 1899 to a George L. Nash in Jackson Co. at the courthouse I found where they married 11/4/1899. She is listed with him on the 1900 census at Tuckerman Twp. as his wife. Then I found her as Mary E. Ripley on the 1910 census in Cache Twp. with two of her children Ollie and Buddie in the household with her. I find that strange, she lists herself as a Ripley again. I would like to find out more about her and her children. I know that Plese Ripley moved to White Co. Ark. He died there 12/1972. William D. Bise stayed in Jackson Co. the rest of his life. Albert L. Bise stayed in Franklin Co. the rest of his life. I would like to know what happened to the rest of the family, where they went, their families, and where they are buried.

Loura is actually Laura Lee Smith. The person doing the handwritting had bad handwritting.

Dan B. Smith is acutally their daughter whose real name is Geraldine Elizabeth Smith.

I'm looking for anyone in the Grubbs area who would remember Maggie Wilbanks (Mrs. Walter Wilbanks) and her family. I have been to her grave north of Grubbs but have been unsuccessful in contacting other family members. Her mother was Elizabeth Thomason, although that was her third marriage. Her sister was Mrs. Caroline Furr of Swifton. Caroline Furr was married (apparently briefly) to Joe Grantham. I'm just looking for any tidbit that might give me a clue about origin.

To my knowledge no one has been able to find a paper trail from Turner Arthur VICK, b. 25 Jul 1810 and d. 15 Mar 1885 in Jackson Co., AR, to the immigrant Joseph VICK, b. abt 1640 in England and d. bef 1704 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. Many believe Turner Arthur's father, Stephen, was the son of Jacob (based upon an inscription on Stephen's monument), and that Jacob's line to Joseph was Isaac, William, Joseph.

For those who are interested, several male VICKs in the U.S. have submitted Y-DNA samples to see if we can use our Y-DNA to verify our lines to Joseph. Some of those male VICKs have a good paper trail to Joseph through his son Richard. A gentleman from Dorset, England also submitted a Y-DNA sample. The results show the descendants of Joseph do not share a recent (last 1,000 years) common ancestor with the gentleman from Dorset. We are still looking for other people from the Gloucestershire area who would be willing to be tested. We may have a different result with other VICKs there We are also looking for someone to test from the Isle of Man. We may have found one. Over the long run, we hope to be able to use Y-DNA to extend the VICK line beyond Joseph and to determine where Jospeh came to VA from.

I'm looking for information on Calvin M. PRINE born 1824 in Tennessee. His son Robert L. Nancy Jane (Eddings)PRINE lived in Craighead Co. Robert and Nancy are suspose to be buried in Cash Cemetery. Sometime between 1894-1895 John and his family left Indiana and moved to Newport, Arkansas. According to family tradition, they were living in Newport, Arkansas by 2/23/1895.

A couple of years later, the Semi Weekly times ran a story in its issue of 7/20/1898 regarding John Nice, formerly of Democrat Township. Carroll County relatives had received a letter from him in which he stated that he had joined the army at Tampa, Florida and would soon be fighting Spaniards in Cuba. The article continues;
Two years ago, John Nice, accompanied by the family consisting of a wife and five children, and a man named Bowen, left this county for Arkansas. and settled on a farm near Newport. They prospered, and were well satisfied until one day Nice went to Newport and marketed his cattle, receiving quite a large sum, and returned home. That night he disappeared, and all efforts to locate him were in vain. It was finally concluded that he had been murdered for his money and his body concealed and suspicion pointed to Bowen. He was arrested as a murderer but was acquitted. A mob, however, decided that he was really guilty and that he should be hung, but for some reason their plan was not carried out.
Nices' wife mourning him as dead, sold the property and came back to Carroll County. and last fall Mrs. Clara Nice married Jay Knarr from White County. They then moved to Royal Center. The former Mrs. Nice is prostrated by the news that her first husband still lives, and his other relatives are undecided whether they should be angry or rejoice over his news that he is alive. Nice belongs to one of the best families in the county, and his letter has caused quite a sensation.
During the time that John was away, he served in the Spanish American War of 1898-1902. according to the inscription on his tombstone. Clara returned to Carroll County in 1896. His oldest child Cora Myrtle, would have been 7, Lee Orris 5 and John Albert 1.
As stated in the newspaper account about John, Clara had indeed remarried.

Elvira is listed on the 1870 Village Township census with a Fowler family and Daniel is listed as an orphan on the same census with a Truman family. Elmira Mendoza Kelly was born June 20, 1844 and Married Stephen Warren White November 17, 1870. Tempy is listed in the household of John W. Collier age 47, Betty age 34 his wife.(I believe Betty is the Charlotte that is listed in the 1880 census of Bedford Cross, Ar as one of Tempy's daughter.) Tempy was born in Edgecombe County, North Caroliina @1854 to Nancy Webb. Tempy had 3 other daughters also.

Here is the info that we have ~
Mary Hunt b: approx 1876 supposedly was given to a family in Jacksonport, AR.
Henry Wilson Hunt b: 3/4/1879 in Mo or Ar ~ found him in the 1900 Fed Census living with the Hazelrigg family in Salado, Ar as a servant. I assume that this is the family that he was given to.
Nell Hunt b: 7/15/1881 in West Plains, Mo. ~ was given to a family in the Sandtown, Ar area but we have no names.
Two other brothers were born approx in 1878 and 1883. But there is no other information. I (again) assume that they were given up in the same areas.
We do not know why the children were given away.
Any informaiton is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on who all of the children were of Albert ANDERSON and Mary/Mollie TANNER ANDERSON. There was supposedly at least 10-14 children born of this union and their descendants are still living in Independence Co., AR and in Jackson Co., AR.

I have only been able to find Albert and Mollie on the 1920 census for Jackson Co., AR living in Bird Township with two of their younger children: Edna, age 17, and Lesley, age 14.

I believe that Haryl and Fairyl ANDERSON (who own a barbershop in Southside Batesville) are descendants of Albert and Mollie somehow but haven't gotten to speak to them yet about their descendancy.

The last information I have on this family line, they were living in Bird/Byrd Township, Jackson Co., AR. I would love to know the names of the spouses and descendants to present.

Mary "Mollie" TANNER ANDERSON was my grandmother's sister. We have been trying for years to find out exactly who her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are and where they live in AR, MO, or IL.

I was born in Newport Arkansas, Jackson Co. February 2,1950 to Robert Leo Bailey and Mary Josephine Raney Bailey of Tuckerman. My father is the son of Joseph Bailey and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cochran Bailey. My father passed away when I was 14 or 15 years old. I never met or knew him. My father had brothers named Ruchel, Ed and Hubert. There are more but I don't know the names. I don't know if there are any sisters. I did met my Uncle Ed one time. We wrote occassionally. I guessed he passed away when the letters stopped. I was never notified or found out when he died. My father was married before my mother. I don't know his first wife's name but they had a son named Dennis Bailey (Milam). Dennis was later adopted. I met Dennis one time. We lost contact. I am looking for anyone that knew my father or relatives from his brothers. I need to have some connection to my father. I have only a few pictures my mother gave me and old letters that my grandmother gave me. That's not enough. I need to have more to make him real....good or bad...I need to know him.

Hi, I am trying to find ANY information on the Satterfield, Mothershed or Davis family that lived in or around Swifton. My grandma, Elvira Mothershed, married Oscar Davis and had five sons. Then married David Satterfield and had a son and a daughter. I also know she had at least two brothers, Guy and Rex that also lived in Swifton.

Looking for any info re: my paternal grandfather - John Milton Edwards,born Grubbs, Ark, dob - 4-5-1893 - dod - 12-2-1924 - died of tetanus at age 32. I think he served in the army, I believe enlisted in 1917. My grandmother, I think was born in Marked Tree, Arkansas, as Hershel Edwards, she married my grandfather who was also an Edwards, and then after 1925 changed her name to Lucille. My mother says the FBI investigated and suspected a man whom Jimmie had an affair with but it couldn't be proven. I would like to know the real facts. Thanks for any help!
