I am posting my reply to you on Ancestry here as well, to give other people hints that may help solve your mystery.

Thank you, that helps. I am not related, just trying to help. I think I found something that suggests Richard was the brother of Oscar. I don't subscribe to Ancestry, so I have been looking for records at www.familysearch.org, which is free. Anyway, here is my research process: I first tried to find Richard in the census, to try and identify his parents. I only found his marriage to Lula, and He and Lula and their daughter in 1900. No luck with 1880 census. So, I tried researching James Garfield Holland. I found him in Texas in 1910, and then he apparently moved to Oklahoma. I found what appears to be the same James Garfield Holland dying in California in 1950. The death index states that his mother's maiden name was Ferrier. Yellville Arkansas is in Marion County, so I went back to the 1880 census, and looked for any Holland living there in that year. I found a 9 year old boy, indexed as "Buchard" Holland, with a brother "Ausker". When I looked at the actual census image, Buchard is definitely Richard. To top it off, the children are living with their grandmother, Lucinda Farrier! Now, James Garfield was not born until the end of 1881, so he would not show up in a census until 1900.
I have not yet found out what happened to Richard. I find a Mrs. Lula Holland remarrying in 1906, so he either died or they were divorced before then- that is the next mystery
