I sent away to the Jackson County Clerk for the marriage record listed in the Early Jackson County Marriage Index 1834-1875:
Brown, Singleton, 25 to M E Jones, 21 Feb. 12 1850
This is listed in all the online indexes, yet they cannot find it at the Jackson County Clerk's office. It is not in their database. They spent quite a bit of time with me on the phone and checked Jones as well as Singleton as a last name and cannot find it. In one Index there are Notes listed and almost all the listings have a letter-number (book and page?) as well as who married the couple. For my Brown the Notes has Robert?? as person who married them, but no letter-number. As a test we used another name that did not have the letter-number in the Notes, and for the year 1850, but that name DID come up in their database.
Coincidently in the same database I found another relative for the year 1867, and they do have that record which is nice, but I don't need it as much as the Brown/Jones one. Obviously the record was there at one time, or it wouldnt be in the index. Also the 1850 census backs up this marriage as it list Singleton and ME being married within the year. This census puts them in White County next door to Jackson County.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can find this marriage record? Any advice much appreciated.
