Haley Burials in Izard Co, AR

According to several Haley family researchers, Barney B and Jane (Brewer) Haley migrated to Izard Co, AR abt 1871 from Tn and resided about 2 miles east of Antioch Church on what as late as 1970 was known as " The Haley Field." And supposedly may well have been buried there on private land, in what was known as the Haley Family Cemetery. The last known burial in this cemetery was that of Thomas R Haley in 1901. If anyone has any information at all regarding this cemetery and the burials there, please contact me.
Thank you.
Betty Haley

I am in the process of trying to figure out what Michael has done on the second volume of the Izard County Pioneer Times and I will work on getting it published. Being his brother, I am sadden about how he was treated by some people
and I am well aware of the fact that the board of directors for the Izard County Historical Society voted to have Michael as editor and I am wondering what kept that from happening. I share Michael's love of history and geneology.
I too was a history major in college with over twice the hours needed to teach history. I have many copies of the first volume for those interested in purchasing one. It was quite good.
Not right now; according the the Weather Channel, you are under terribly cold teperatures and looking forward to ice.
Brick Wall help -- Simons, Lawrence, Sneed

Trying to locate a Simons family before 1850 in Izard Co. My relative was William Riley Simons, b. 1845, near Mountain Home, Izard Co. His mother was Elizabeth, b. abt. 1819; she remarried ? a James M. Sneed. They were on the 1850 census in Izard Co., then moved to Illinois. I don't even have a clue as to Williams' father's name, and a census schedule listed him as born in Tennessee. I've located a few Simons families in the 1840 census, but they don't seem to give me any clues. Also, am trying to determine if William has any siblings by his father: Sarah Angeline, b. 1848 in Arkansas and Martha E. b. 1847-49 in Arkansas - either may be a Simons or a Sneed. If someone can help me with the siblings I might be able to tract them and get a clue to who their father was. Thanks.

Virgie Mae Covington Bates - born 20 Dec 1902

I have the following information from my Grandmother's Social Security application - and I'm looking for any information regarding her or her family.

Virgie Mae Covington, born 20 Dec 1902 in Maxwell, Sharp County Arkansas. (I realize she might have meant Maxville)
She lists her father's name as Will Covington and her mother's name as Ida Bell Nipps.

We were always told that she had a fairly substantial percentage of Cherokee ancestry. And I believe she possibly had a sister named Myrtle.

She married Robert Franklin Bates abt 1917 - he was born in 1893 near Franklin, Izard County, Arkansas and was the son of Zachariah Bates and Bettie (Elizabeth) Drake.

Virgie Mae and Robert Bates moved to Muskogee Oklahoma about the time they were married. They appear together in the 1920 Muskogee Census. They could have actually been married in any of the above locations - I do not have any record of their marriage yet.

They moved back to Arkansas about 1927 and were living in Myron, Jefferson Township, Izard County for the 1930 Census.

In 1942 they were living near Bald Knob in White County. In 1947 they were living near Hoxie in Lawrence County.

By abt 1950 they were living in Rockford, Winnebago County Illinois, where Robert died in 1952. He is buried in Violet Hill Cemetery in Izard County.

Virgie Mae lived in Rockford until her death in March of 1974.

Their children who are no longer living were:

Henry Thomas b.1920 - d.unknown
Jerry Robert b.1922 - d.1957
Geraldine b.1928 - d.2006
Betty Jo (I don't have her dates)
William Z b.1926 - d.1990

Several of their children are still living - I've omitted their names.

I'd be glad to share any and all other information I have with anyone else interested in researching the Ancestors of Virgie Mae Covington.

Greg
Wood/Woods family help

I've been helping my daughter-in-law start her family history. I've been doing my genealogy for 25+ years, & I tell ya, this is the hardest 'find' I've had...

She has very little info on her family. She did have her grandfather's name, Monroe Woods, & that Monroe died when her father was a teenager. I ended up finding him in the SS death index, & found him buried in the National Cem at Fayetteville, AR. He was born 1917 in Izard Co, AR. I found he & his parents in the 1920 census - my luck, his parents were listed as J A & L A Woods. Monroe is listed as M C. So I went on to the 1930 census & found them listed there as 'Jervey' Woods & 'Louie' Wood. After closer inspection, I decided 'Jervey' was actually 'Jessey' born 1890. He isn't listed in the SS death index, but I did find a WWI draft card for him stating he was born in Pineville, Izard Jan 26 1890. He died Dec 1, 1957 Bradford, AR. His name is actually Jesse A Woods.

I have been page by page several times thru the 1900 & 1910 census, I can't find 'em! I have a feeling they are under one of the pages with the black blobs - unreadable.

If anyone knows of Jesse's family, can you drop me a note?

Marriage and / or Burial Lookup - Please

I am looking for record of a marriage between: Robert Franklin Bates and Virgie Mae Covington. Most likely in the Spring of 1917. And most likely in Izard County Arkansas.

I know that Robert Bates listed himself as being married to Virgie Mae on June 4 1917 when completing his WWI draft registration card in Izard County. At that time he listed his place of residence as Day - which is a bit west of Franklin.

Robert Franklin Bates (b. 17 Jan 1893 in Franklin Township, Izard County, AK, and d. 16 Apr 1952 in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL) is buried somewhere in Izard County - I've not yet located his grave but family members say the cemetery is generally located near Violet Hill.

He is the son of Zachariah T. Bates and Bettie Drake who are buried in the Bates Family Cemetery just north of Myron. The ancestry of Zachariah is well documented - I would be delighted to learn more about Elizabeth (Bettie) Drake if anyone has information to share.

Virgie Mae Covington (b. 20 Dec 1903 in Arkansas and d. Mar 1974 in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL) is buried at Sunset Memorial Garden in Loves Park IL. Her parents are unknown to me at this time.

They moved to Musgokee Oklahoma shortly after their marriage and lived there until 1927. They then returned to Arkansas and lived in Izard County. They had moved to Bald Knob in White County by 1942. And then to Rockford IL sometime around 1950 - as did all of their children and their children's families.

Robert and Virgie are my paternal grandparents. I knew my grandmother Virgie very well. However, my grandfather Robert died several years before I was born.

Family legend always was that Virgie was only 14 when she married Robert - and that he was about 10 years older than she. Which has proven to be true. Family legend also was that Virgie Mae was at least 1/4 Cherokee. And that she had family in the Cherokee settlements in Oklahoma. Unfortunately I haven't yet been unable to determine anything regarding Virgie Mae's Parentage or family.

I am not certain that she was born in Izard County but do know that her census records when living as Robert's wife state that she and both her parents were born in Arkansas. Because she married at such an early age there would be only one census record that would show her living with her parents - and that would be the 1910 census. As of yet I've not been able to locate her in that census.

Any and all information pertaining to these individuals or suggestions as to where I might find additional information would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg

Am trying to find a new lead for my brick wall. William Riley Simons was born in Izard Co. Ark 11 Oct 1845, near Mountain Home. I don't know his father's name, but his mother's first name was Elizabeth, last name maybe Lawrence. William Riley Simons' father had died by 1850, so I would love some help as to where to look to determine his father's name or death info., anything !

By the 1850 Census in Izard Co., Elizabeth had remarried a James M. Sneed -- can't find a marriage record or date or year, but bet. 1846 and 1850. They later moved up north.

I am looking for my Rains relations in Izard and Fulton Co., Ark. area. My gr-gr grandmother was Sarah Rains, b. 1857 in Missouri, married Enoch Webb in Izard Co., Ark. and died there in 1934. She was the daughter of William Rains and his wife Amanda (Moore?) Rains and she had a brother John Rains who married Margaret "Bell" Webb. I would like to know more about this family and where they came from to Arkansas. Sarah's father, William Rains was born in 1832. His second wife was Frances Miller whom he married in Fulton Co., Ark. in 1890. Anyone needing information on the Yancey, Porterfield, McVey, Ginn, Pitts, Webb, Grills families may contact me as I have researched these families and have much information to share.

Steve Riggan
P.O.
John & Mindy Sue Carter

I am looking for information on John & Mindy Sue Carter who resided in the Evening Shade, AR area for around 70 years. I beleive they moved to Evening Shade, AR around 1870 or 1871 from somewhere in Missouri. They had 13 children, one of which was my great-grandmother James Allie Carter Marlin Hightower. Anyone who may know of or about them please contact me. I'm trying to find where they came from, who their parents were, etc. Mindy Sue Carter's maiden name was either Cain or Cane and it is beleived that she was full blood Cherokee. After John Carter died she married a man from the Sharp County area - last name Horton - don't know his first name. My family names from this area of Arkansas are : Lawhon, Marlin, Hightower, & Carter. These families all lived in the Izard and Sharp county areas. Again, anyone with information on John & Mindy Carter or any of the other family names I've mentioned please feel free to contact me. Thank You

Date of courthouse construction in Athens

Does anyone have a historical record of Izard County that might indicate what the dates of construction were for the first county Courthouse at Athens in the 1830s or 1840s?

I have a photocopied page from "A History of Izard County, Arkansas" by Karr Shannon, A.B., LL. B., Columnist and Feature Writer at Arkansas Democrat, Little Rock, Arkansas. Published by Democrat Publishing and Lithographing Co, Little Rock Arkansas. 1947. The paragraph that has to do with my family is this:

"When the courthouse was erected at Athens, no provision was made for heating the room. So late in the fall it was decided to build a chimney. A meeting was called for the purpose of making the necessary arrangements. At this meeting some extravagant persons who were in favor of progress advocated the building of a stone chimney. They declared that old Peter Young and Sol Hess were both skilled in this kind of work and could build a chimney of stone that would look much better than one built of "stick and clay" and would last forever. Jim Creswell took a very decided stand against the motion, and in bursts of oratory, declared that he was not in foavor of "grinding the people to death with taxes." He also said he was in favor of holding to old landmarks and building chimneys of stick and dirt as all had been accustomed to, and which would be much cheaper. The arguments of this staunch servant of the people were too logical to be disregarded -- so the first courthouse ever built in what is now Izard County had a stick and dirt chimney."

I'm descended from "old Peter Young" in the paragraph above and knowing when the courthouse was built might give me some sort of idea as to how old "old" Peter Young really was. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the book Mr. Shannon wrote in the 1940s and the one page I do have doesn't give any dates.

Thank you!

1840 Izard Co., White River Twp

In 1840, my ggg-grandfather, Jesse Horn, was on the AR, Izard Co, White River Twp census. Keeping in mind the boundary line changes for Izard Co., where would that location be today? I would like to visit the area, and need to know of any cemeteries in that general vicinity. Thank you so much for any information.

Lou Nell HUTCHISON Bath

Help - Marriage Morris Jane Lafferty and Samuel R. Harvey

Looking for help to source marriage between Morris Jane Lafferty (daughter of Lorenzo Dow Lafferty and Elvira Cresswell) and Samuel R. Harvey. Family stories speak of this marriage but I haven't found any documentation of any kind (beyond Great Aunt's hand-written family history) that corroborates the marriage. I did find Robert Glen and Mary Harvey (children of Morris Jane and Samuel Harvey) living with "Eliza" Lafferty in 1880. I believe that Elvira was incorrectly listed as Eliza and that this does, somewhat, corroborate the family stories. Robert Glen Harvey was my great-grandfather. Any help much appreciated! Even other word-of-mouth sources!
