I am searching for the grave of my ggrandmother, Margaret McTigue, who died in Independence County about 1917. She was living with her son John Hugh McTigue at the time. I have been told that she was buried in a cemetery with the word "Hill" or "Hills" in the name. In the Cemetery Records of Independence Co., Ark., Pleasant Hill Cemetery and Ruddell Hill Cemetery are listed. However, her name is not among those in this reference but there is a "?.M.M." listed. Does anyone know if there are any other cemeteries in Independence Co. with word Hill or Hills in the name??

Has anyone done any research on Minor Henry Sparks and Sarah Ann Anderson who married in Independence County, Arkansas according to one source? Sarah was born in Arkansas about 1834 and died most likely in Sharp County Arkansas at about 1870. They had 6 children that I know of - Julina Clementine, David, John, Sarah, Henry and Robert born in Arkansas and Kansas. Minor married Amanda Jane Paget in 1871 and they had one child in Missouri and then 3 in Texas.

Searching for ANY info on George Wesley JONES. G.W. went to Texas married Etta Prena PICKETT. They had two children: Edgar (1904) and Rose. G.W. left Texas and returned to Arkansas with Edgar. Have copy of G.W. and Lucy SIX's marriage license from Independence County, AR. G.W. is listed in the 1910 Independence County, AR Census with wife(Lucy) and child(Edgar). Moved to Randolph County, AR. G.W. marries a Mrs. Cora JACKSON. Edgar JONES settles in Randolph County, AR. G.W. fathers two more children: Johnnie and Wesley. G.W. dies somewhere around 1930/40's possibly in Jackson County, AR.

Hugh Anderson Verdin was born in Georgia in 1798. He appears in the 1860 Census living in the Ruddell township.
Family records says he died 31 Aug 1831 in Ruddell. I'm looking for a cemetery that might be in this area?

Looking for relatives of James F. LUCAS

Seeking information on any of the family names listed above. Great Grandfather was James F Lucas. He is buried at Rosie Cemetery near Oil Trough. Next to him is my Grandfathers first wife, Mattie Fuller or Hutson Lucas. My Grandfather married Bessie Alma Summers after Mattie died. His name was Harvey Wesley Lucas. He and Bessie are buried at Mack's Chapel Cemetery near Sulphur Rock.

James F. Lucas was born in Iowa. His mother in Ohio and his father in New York. I haven't been able to find out their names. Nor have I found his wife's name. Would love to have answers to who they were!

Bessie Summers was the daughter of Robert Elwood Summers and Lucy Rawlings. Lucy married Luther Turner after Mr. Summers died. I do not know where they are buried. Although it is probably near Sulphur Rock or Newark. I would like the location of their graves.

I am interested in all related surnames. Which include Bias, Collins and others all of Independence County, AR. If you are searching any of these names I would love to hear from you and will gladly share the research I have.

On the 1880 census, my ggg grandfather, James P. Gillum (born 1808) was living with the Robert and Mary Gardner family (apparently no relation). Gillum died after 1880 and before 1900, and descendants remained in the area. Mary Gardner died in 1882 and is reported to have been buried in KIRK CEMETERY.

My question is this: Where is Kirk Cemetery? It could possibly be the site of James P. Gillum's burial, as well, or at least pinpoint the area in which they lived.

Trying to find the death record and burial place of Elizabeth (Brown?) Luster b 1832 Monroe Co, TN, apparently d ca 25 Apr 1861 Batesville, Independence Co, AR. From records of doctor visits to home, Elizabeth and son James W. were both ill, and since I find no further records of James, presume he also died. Elizabeth was wife of William A. Luster, who was killed in MO 22 May 1864 during a guerilla attack. William was Pvt in Reg 2, Arkansas Volunteers (cavalry). When William was killed, the 2 daughters were left orphans.

I started this with my grandmother whos mother was Arizona Adda Marchant and her mother was mary F. Vest. Mary was married to Martin Bell Marchant. I know they were married abt 1882 in Ark. Would love to know if they had other children, and marys line. Grandma has passed but I want to finish this for her. Any help would be most greatful. Do know Marys dad was James J. Vest and mom was Delaney Kent.
As I said if anyone can fill in the blanks it would be a BIG help. I do know that Gma was born in Springdale, Ark. and lived in Harrison for awhile.

I am almost positive this is the same woman, but want some proof if possible. She would've had to have married Mr. Ramsey between 1880 and 1886 as she was born in 1869 in Tennessee. In 1850 Independence County, AR, census records show Martin and Elizabeth East Cason with 3 Matchett children living with them - Mary Jane Matchett, Sarah Margaret Matchett, and Melton Matchett.

John and Pamelia East Morris had Chilton Matchett, age 4, living with them.

Does anyone know how, or if, the Matchetts are related to these families? I am trying to discover the parents of these Matchett children. Census records show them as being from Virginia.

I am trying to locate information for citing a source for the marriage of (first name is possibly Joseph) Jesse KENNEDY to Sarah SOUTHARD on 14 Sep 1862 in Independence Couty, Arkansas. Looking for marriage book and page no. and to verify the information is correct.

Sarah was possibly his fourth and final wife, she is listed as a widow in the 1870 and 1880 US Federal Census. She died aft. 1880 near Batesville.

Jesse was married possibly 3 time prior to Sarah. These wives include Prudence Haynes on Marriage: 1825 in Maury County, Tennessee and possibly died in Independence Co, AR abt. 1861. Jesse and Prudence had the following children (trying to descendents of these people too):

James Henry Green was born March 1 or 6 1880 to James Calvin Green and Martha Hines. He died 27 April 1966. James Calvin Green and Martha Hines are listed as his parents on his Social Security Application. Also According to James Henry Green's WWI draft registration card, his
birth is 6 March 1880.

He lived in Sharp County and is buried at the Cave City Cemetery. I have not had any luck finding out any further info on his birth. In the 1900 Census, James age 17 and his sister Victory age 14 was living with James Tarry.

I'd love to know when Kate (Catherine) McFarland Cannon died and whether she's buried with her husband William Cannon.
I know he (b.19 Feb 1832, TN) died 30 Dec 1893 in Greenbrier Valley, Independence Co; I don't know where he's buried. Kate was b. 1838 (to Alexander and Sarah J Peel McFarland), and I found her still in Independnce co. in 1910, but after that....

For that matter, I'd also love to know where her mother, Sara Jane Peel McFarland is buried and when she died.

But his mother says that his fathers parents are buried in a cemetery in Pleasant Plains. The grandmother was Josephine Rogers and she died in the 1980's. The grandfather was Bill Rogers and he died sometime between 1960-1965 give or take. We have no idea when they were born or if they were even born in Arkansas.

I have looked on the Independence Co website at their cemeteries there and could not find them listed, but I know that there are more cemeteries than what is listed. So I would really appreciate it if anyone who has access to cemetery records could do a lookup for me.

At least three separate COCHRAN (various spellings) families settled in Independence County in the 1830s and acquired federal land in Black River (now Marshall?) Twp. The heads of household were James H., Hugh Edward and John G. COCHRAN - all born 1790 to 1800. I have compiled information on all of these families. However, I primarily am interested in James H. COCHRAN, as I suspect that he may be my ancestor.

Isaac A. TATE was the son of William C. TATE. The NELSON boys are all supposed to be sons of Reuben and Nancy NELSON. Although the COCHRANS lived in Black River Twp., these other families apparently did not.

My Great-Grandfather was Erastus D (aka Rasp) White. His parents are thought to have been Isaac White and Ruth Sorrels White.

Isaac was thought to be born in Peregrine NC but the 1850 Census states he was from SC, while others say NC. He and his wife Ruth lived for a time in TN. TN is where they appear to have married as well and 3 of their children were born there.

The Isaac white family were found in 1850 living at Round Pond, Independence County, Arkansas. This is where they appear to have lived out their lives. Here my Great-grand father Erastus is found on the Census of 1850 at the age of 8 also at Round Pond, Independence Co., AR. With these siblings

Erastus White married my Great Grandmother Amanda Florence (Mandy) Burk in Independence Co. 22 Jan 1866 Arkansas. I have yet to hook up with a White Cousin though there should be some in Independence County. As the family group below was found living in Fairview, AR. (A fast Google search tells me that town is no longer to be found.)

Erastus after his marriage to Amanda F Burk starts showing up in Census from Fulton County, over near Salem and Ash Flats. He died young, age 40. Amanda remarried a Wiley Green. They all buried at Burk’s Chapel in Camp, Fulton County, AR as are some of their children and grandchildren.

If any of this sounds familiar. Or if you can give me any details I'd love to hear from you, These Whites are a big Gap of information in my Family tree and I want very much to fill them in. and information earlier than Isaac is suspect.

Thomas Brady was born in TN - married in 1851 in DeKalb County, TN to Lavina Cooper the daughter of Rachel Cooper. They moved to Pope County, Ill. by the 1860 census. He was on the move again by 1870 and is in the Independence County, Arkansas census. I cannot find him or his family in 1880. He had a second wife, Angeline and children: John, Mary Tennessee, Sarah J. and another female that I cannot decipher. Is anyone familiar with this family? Thanks.

Can anyone give me some direction on the George W. Mann family in Independence Co. Ark in the 1850s? My ancestor was Permelia Catherine Mann, born April 1850 in this co. She went by "Kate" or "Katie". She married ? a man named Smith, poss. James, sometime after the 1860 census. My g-grandfather Albert L. Smith was born in Feb. 1875 in Phillips Co. Ark. and by 1880 Katie wasa widow and Albert was 5 years old. I got Albert's father's name "James Smith" from his death cert. but his wife was the respondent. I have a little info. on the Manns in Independence Co. but hope someone might provide a few "crumbs" to give me direction and keep me pursuing !

Today I did a little internet snooping to see if I could find out more about your Beverly Basil Owens. From what I can gather (and I have no knowledge of this family before now), your Beverly Basil Owens was born March 22, 1878 in Sulphur Rock, Independence County, Arkansas, where he seems to have lived his entire life. His wife's name was Mattie and they had 8 children who survived.

I will assume from the information you gave that John G. Owens b. 1844 in Independence County, AR was the father of Beverly Basil Owens b. 1878. The father of John G. Owens was Beverly B. Owens and his mother was June (Jane Gibson, according to another researcher). This Beverly B. Owens is the correct age to be your Beverly "Basil" Owens b. 1814, but another researcher had him as Beverly "Benjamin" Owens, born in South Carolina.

My earliest known OWENS ancestor from South Carolina is John Owens, who died in Laurens County in 1806; birth date or place of origin is unknown, but he still had small children when he died. John Owens was married to Mary Long, who remarried a widower, Joseph Adair, Sr., after John's death. John and Mary Long Owens had four sons, all of whom would be the correct age to be Beverly Basil Owens' father: JOHN OWENS, JR.--a very good candidate to be your Beverly's father. John Jr.'s estimated birth year is 1785; he was mentioned in John Owens' Sr.'s will and also seems to have signed Daniel's will, but I have lost track of him after that; Daniel Owens, who wrote his will in 1811 and mentioned no wife or children, left everything to his mother and siblings; Thomas Owens, my ancestor, who married his first wife, Alcey Duckett in 1817 and whose children are well documented, and there is no Beverly; and Robert Owens, who married Sarah McCrary on 3 Mar 1814. (That is pushing it a little for Robert to be the father of your Beverly). This Owens family lived along Duncan's Creek in Laurens County, S.C. (and some papers on them are found in the Abbeville District). It seems that if any of the sons of John Owens were to be the father of your Beverly B. Owens, then it would have to have been JOHN OWENS, JR. I will keep my eyes open for your Beverly in my research!

There were other Owings, Ewings, and even Owens in the area at an early date. Ours always consistently spelled theirs Owens (although others misspelled it on some documents).

Help ~ Looking for Hunt children that were given away....

I'm looking for approx. 5 children that were given up between 1884 - 1900. We know names, dates or approx dates and approx locations of were they grew up/given up of 3 children. The other two we have sex and approx dob but no name. I have been working on the Henry Wilson Hunt line and am in contact with someone working on the Nell Hunt line. If any one has any info please post and/or email me.

Here is the info that we have ~
Mary Hunt b: approx 1876 supposedly was given to a family in Jacksonport, AR.
Henry Wilson Hunt b: 3/4/1879 in Mo or Ar ~ found him in the 1900 Fed Census living with the Hazelrigg family in Salado, Ar as a servant. I assume that this is the family that he was given to.
Nell Hunt b: 7/15/1881 in West Plains, Mo. ~ was given to a family in the Sandtown, Ar area but we have no names.
Two other brothers were born approx in 1878 and 1883. But there is no other information. I (again) assume that they were given up in the same areas.
We do not know why the children were given away.
Any informaiton is greatly appreciated.

Soward, Hotchkiss, and related families

I am researching the Soward family and would like to exchange information with anyone else interested in the family. My 2nd grt grandfather, West Walker Soward, settled in Independence County about 1839. He was born in 1814 in Knox County, Tennessee, to Henry and Mary (maiden name not known) Soward. He was hired to help move the Hotchkiss family from Roane County, TN to Arkansas about 1836. He married Matilda Hotchkiss, a daughter of the head of the family he was hired to move. The head of the family was Hezekiah Knight Hotchkiss whose wife was Lydia G. Mead. Upon arrival in Arkansas the Hotchkiss family and West W. Soward lived for a short time in St. Francis County and that is probably where West and Matilda were married. Unfortunately, the marriage records of St. Francis Co. for that time period do not survive. I am searching for a family Bible that might have the marriage recorded. Hezekiah's brother, Elihu Hotchkiss, preceded Hezekiah's arrival in St. Francis Co. West's brother William Soward (1802-1878), his wife, Mary Manning Soward, and two other brothers, Elijah Soward (1817-1862) and Jeremiah Soward (born in 1821 and last heard of in a Union prisoner of war camp), also went to Independence Co. I am especially interested in finding the maiden name of Mary wife of Henry Soward. She was born in 1778 in NC and died sometime in the 1850s, probably in Knox or Roane County, TN.

I am going nuts trying to sort this all out. I need Help!

I have information for William Burch b 1764, Haw River, Rowan, North Carolina that includes 3 different wives and 7 children. The dates for the marriages and births overlap.

Ques: Was William a Polygamist? Ques: Could Marry Harris and Morning Harris be the same person. Ques: Do the 7 children listed all share the same mother, Morning Harris or are they children of the other wives?

Can anyone help me sort this out?

I am looking for any information that anyone may have on my 2G-Grandparents Richard Lewis McClendon (1814-c. 1865) and his wife Sidney (last name unknown)(1814-c. 1880) - or any of their offspring. According to census listings Richard was born in either SC or AL (MS territory), and Sidney in TN. They had nine children: Minerva (b. 1832 in AL, m. Lewis Jones 9/26/1853 in Shelby County AL); Mary (b. 1835 in AL, m. Ira Martin 8/5/1856 in Shelby County); Lucas Michael "Lafayette" (b. Feb 1840 in AL, d. 18 Dec 1912 in AL; m. Margaret Jane Roy 11/14/1875); Jonas "Jones" (b. 1841 in AL; m. Lucy J. ? before 1866); Harriet Ann (b. 1844 in AL); Susan (b. 1844 in AL); Martha (b. 1846 in AL); Lewis (b. Jonathon was my great grandfather on my grandfathers(Buddy McMahan)side. I can't seem to find any info on Jonathon. I'm not sure where he was born or who his parents were,but he last lived and is buried in Almond,Independence County,Arkansas.My grandpa was born in 1913, and his father,Jonathon, passed a few years later in 1916-17. Jonathon was married twice that I know of. The first marriage having two sons, Milas and Winfield McMahan. His second marriage was to Martha Jane(Sutton)McMahan in which they had three more sons: Henry, Buddy, and Adler McMahan. If anybody has any info it would be much appreciated.Thanks.

Magness/Trammell - Land Sale and Jury Service

I’m hoping someone can help me or direct me to a source who can. I’m trying to confirm a sale of land by Nicholas Trammell Jr. to Morgan Magness in 1821 in what was then Independence County. The timing of that is important in understanding a timeline on Trammell’s move into Texas, perhaps by way of Pecan Point. Nick Trammell is the namesake of Trammel’s Trace.

Related to that is a date saying Trammell served on a jury. Apparently “Reminiscences’ of Independence County” by Robert Neill, Vol III, p. 339 has Nick as a member of the first petit jury in the county on Nov 19, 1821. If you have that source can someone verify if for me?

If there are early court records in a published volume, I’d be very interested in purchasing one for these earliest years around Batesville.

I know for certain they were living in Independence Co., AR in 1920 per the Census.

According to the 1930 census for Big Bottom, Ind. Co., AR, the following family was living there:

Berdie has been spelled differet ways (Birdie, Birda, Berda, etc.) but she is the daughter of Thomas and Ida (Lassiter) Stafford of Ind. Co., AR (1890-?). Berdie was married once before to an unknown HATFIELD and Willard and Opal are hers by that previous marriage. Mr. HATFIELD died before the 1910 census for Jackson Co., AR.

I am looking for more information on Berdie Bowman and her children, Bertha May and Pauline BOWMAN, and Willard and Opal HATFIELD.

If anyone has any information on the descendants of this family line, I would appreciate it if you would contact me.

I know my husband's grandparents lived for a time in Independence County (William Earl Bell and Mary Idella Ryan were both born in the county).
A couple of questions. Is William Earl Bell's father (also William) buried there? I'm guessing his birth at about 1820? His mother, Mary? I guess her at about 1833.

I'm missing death dates on two of William Earl and Della's children (and of course, burial sites):
Nettie Ryan, b. July 1879 (d before 1900?)
Charley Ryan, b Dec 1882.

Leanah was born in 1804 in NC. She married Thomas Stephens, approx. 1827 in IN. They had four children (from 1828 to 1835) in Indiana and then had 2 boys (from 1838 to 1841) in Arkansas, Independence County, White River Township.

Can anyone tell me how to search for more information on Leanah? I don't know where to go from here since I only have a first name and a state where she was born. I would like to know what her maiden name was and what county she was from in NC.

Some of the information I have came from the 1880 Census (where she was living with her son in Arkansas, Independence County, Big Bottom Township) and some of the information came from the LDS website.

The census also shows Leanah's mother was from North Carolina and her father was from Pennsylvania.

I hope I am not at a dead-end and someone can advise me on how to continue my search.

Him and his family was there on the 1880 US census and his wife Mahala Chitwood Todd was living in Christian Township Independence County with her son John Todd in 1900. How extensive are the marriage records for Independence County? What I'm particularly interested in finding is the date of marriage for William M. RYAN and Sarah Emma ROSEBROUGH. I believe they were married about 1876 (judging from kids' ages), and I'm assuming, for now, that they married in Independence County as that's where she and her family lived. They settled there, too. He was a doctor; I have photos of his house.

I gather (from family lore and Census records) that he came from Illinois, but I don't know when. I do know that he and Emma were married and living near her father in 1880.

M. H. (Marshall) Patterson - death

Family stories are that Daddy's uncle, Marshall (M. H.) Patterson was ambushed and murdered by bootleggers. I know he was at earlier points in his life the sheriff of Woodruff County, and I've found a couple of enchanting acoounts of his part in dealing with a train robbery in 1891.
I know he died on May 20, 1920, and is buried in the Augusta Memorial Cemetery.

What I don't know is the story about his death. Are there newspaper accounts? (Gary, do you have anything in your vast collection?)

I am looking for the family of Jesse Adams, born about 1864 in Pennsylvania and married to a Tina or Tine Adams. They had children Mamie, James, Jesse Jr., Bertie, Eula, Beula and Edna...the family was listed on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Census's for Independence County. I would like to find a male ADAMS descendant of this group who would be willing to participate in a DNA test to help determine ancestry back in Pennsylvania. Jesse Sr. also had brothers named James, born about 1868 and Morrel born about 1866. The father of these three Adams brothers was Ephraim Adams married to Sarah Adams. Any help in locating any of the descendants of this Adams family would be appreciated.

I am looking for John Bennett CARR (b: 1871, Little Rock AR). His father was William E. CARR (b: unk) and mother was Nancy BURNS (b: unk). John’s family lived in TX and he had at least three sisters—Addie, Meg, and Jane. On 20 Sep 1896, he married Idella NORRIS (b: 19 Jun 1876, Burnet TX) in Huckabay TX. John and Idella lived in Thurber (at least in 1901), Stephenville (Erath Co), Clifton (Bosque Co), and Post (Garza Co) TX. John also lived in Hamilton TX in 1940 and later with his niece Georgina MARIAN. He died in Ft. Worth TX about 1948.
I believe that John’s ancestors are a CARR family that moved from Arkansas to Erath County, Texas. They are Stephen CARR (b: 1823 AL) and Martha Jane (b: 1822 AL). Their children were: John T. (b: 1847 AR), William E. (b: 1849 AR), Mary F. (b: 1851 AR), Joseph N (b: 1852 AR), James D. (b: 1854 AR), and Martha M (b: 1855 KY). They lived in Pope County AR and Independence AR and were in Erath Co, TX by 1880. I would also like to contact descendents of his sisters if possible.

Twin: William Anthony Neal Strickland b. June 14, 1884

I am researching my grandmother's Strickland family. She had twin brothers who were youngest siblings. One of the twins was William Anthony Neal Strickland b. June 14, 1884 in Independence Co, AR.

I found twins living with their parents at age 16 on the 1900 census.

On the 1910 census I found William Anthony Neal Strickland age 26 living with his parents and it appeared he may have been widowed but census record hard to read.

Family member says he may have moved to Kansas City, KS.

Please send any information that may help my research on locating William.

ANDERSON -- GRAVES -- TANNER connections in Independence Co., AR

Hello,

I am still looking for information on the children of Albert ANDERSON and Mary/Mollie TANNER ANDERSON. There was supposedly at least 10-14 children born of this union.

I have only been able to find Albert and Mollie on the 1920 census for Jackson Co., AR living in Bird Township with two of their younger children: Edna, age 17, and Lesley, age 14. I am hoping someone might help me find marriages for Edna and Lesley, and find their descendants.

Mollie TANNER ANDERSON was the sister of Nancy Jane TANNER GRAVES, who was the wife of John Gilbert GRAVES. Nancy and Gilbert's daughter, Ethel GRAVES married Alfred ANDERSON, who was supposedly a younger brother to Albert ANDERSON. Nancy and Gilbert's son, Raleigh Harrison GRAVES, was well known from Batesville to Augusta, AR. He was usually associated with the mule trade and farming.

Haryl and Faryl ANDERSON who still reside in Batesville, are cousins but the family connection is still being sought.

If anyone has any information on this ANDERSON family line or on the GRAVES family line, I would appreciate the help.

Katie was a widow on the 1880 census when Albert was 5, both were living with a Sophia Pitts in Duty, Lawrence, Ark.
