Old Land Abstract

We have an old abstract of title on property we once owned on HWY 4 east of Hope. The first entry is dated 1853, when the United States granted to the State of Arkansas a swath of land 30 miles wide upon which to build a railroad. Of course, the railroad sold most of this land off through the years. Some of the names of buyers include: A. W. & Elizabeth Hamilton, F.M. Gammill, J. J. & H. C. Byers, J. F. Gammill, Jennie Hanegan, James L. & Eliza White (includes James' will), J. R. Kennedy, Loula Bixby, Ollie & Flora Legrand, Charles Fox, Floyd Fuller. The place was known as 'the Fuller farm' when my husband purchased it.

Rather than just tossing it, I thought maybe someone might recognize a name and glean a little info about their kinfolks from it...it is pretty interesting even if you don't know the people.

So, if anyone wants it, I will gladly mail it to you, or let me know where it might benefit the most people.

Victoria

I am looking for information on Gladys Moxley Vines, wife of Homer Vines (my grandparents). She was born July 17, 1912 and died July 30, 1992. Children are Robert Carroll (my dad), Charles Edward, Shirley and Joyce. I believe she was born in Commerce, Hunt Co, Texas and lived at Delta Co, Texas (not sure how long). Both Gladys and Homer died in Hope, Ark and are buried in Hempstead co (or a county to the south). All I remember about the cemetery is that it was next to a church (probably a Church of Christ, as that is the denomination they belonged to). Homer was born July 10 1910 and died July 1985. I would be interested in information from cousins (my dad, aunts and uncle have all died). I would very much like to know who her parents are. Particularly I would like a copy their obituaries and marriage license and death cert. Information from licenses would be fine for now. I will be glad to reimburse expenses for copies.

I am looking to further my information on John Chatman Clark.

John Chatman Clark was born 10 August 1810 Anderson, South Carolina to Samuel Thomas & Susannah MASTERS Clark. By 1830 he was living in Henry County, Georgia as were his parents & other family members & was married to his first wife, Sirena (which looks like Lorena in the 1850 census). By 1850 John & Sirena were living in Ozan, Hempstead County, Arkansas with their children William, John & Sarah. Sirena died sometime after the 1850 census & before
18 December 1855 when John married Elizabeth TAYLOR. In 1860 John & Elizabeth had Leora Fannie Clark (there is also an Elizabeth Bone living with them – is she related)? After 1880 it seems both John & Elizabeth are gone from census records so I would assume they have both died?

Any help with this Clark family will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Lena
A marriage record is found in Hempstead County, Arkansas for John Gibson to Mary E. Tyree. The date of the marriage was November 24, 1870. What happened to Mary and John? I have been unable to find them on the 1880 census. Mary E. was the daughter of Rachel Hamilton and Stephen I. Tyree. Rachel and Stephen had 2 more daughters, Eveline and Josephine. Josephine married William Alexander Snell in 1873 in Nevada County, Arkansas. By 1900 this family is found in Gonzales County, Texas. Any help on the Tyree and Gibson families would be appreciated.

Williams-1820- Arkansas Territory

I am searching for the parents of my oldest Williams ancestor, James M Williams, born 1821 in Old Hempstead County, Arkansas Territory.
In the 1820 tax list of Hempstead Co, there is a William Williams and a Thomas Williams, either of which may be the parent of James. There is also a John W. Williams listed. His father is James Williams, and may be some kin to the Williams I am researching.
The census records for James M Williams state that his father was born in Tennessee. He has an older brother named Williams Williams who was born in Tennessee in 1818.
After statehood James M.Williams and his family appeared in census of Hempstead, Pike and Howard Counties of Arkansas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mary
1850 Schools in Hempstead Co- Harper Surname

My ggg grandmother Mary Malinda Harper was attending a girls' school in Hempstead Co in 1850. She appears there on the 1850 census as being 15, born in TN. In 1851, she married my ggg grandfather, Elias Samuel Miller in Lafayette Co, AR and the marriage certificate states she was a resident of that county. I find no Harpers on the 1850 census of Hempstead Co who could have been her parents, so I assume this may have been a boarding school. I have only 1 potential family in Lafayette Co as her parents-- Robert G. Harper & wife. However, I need something to substantiate this and was wondering what the name of the school was and if they kept records for students. I would appreciate any info out there. thanks.

I'm looking for my grandfather, I have two names to work with, on my mother's birth certificate it says his name is Dosia Barnes, age 34 (1948) living in Hempstead/Howard Co, Arkansas (the writing is hard to read but I think it's Hempstead). Either he or my grandmother was living on Route #1 in Ozan. A midwife attended to my mother's birth. His occupation was farming.

My grandmother said the midwife put the wrong name, and that my grandfather's real name is Leonard Townsend, his mother's name is Margaret and his father's name is Robert, and he had a brother, she couldn't remember the name.

I am looking to further my information on Elizabeth CLARK Terry.

Elizabeth Clark was born 1836 in Georgia to Samuel Thomas & Susannah MASTERS Clark & married George B. Terry 25 June 1854 DeKalb County, Georgia. I have not had luck finding them in the 1860 census but according to the 1870 census for Ozan, Hempstead County, Arkansas they would have been in Arkansas in 1860 for their son William Terry is listed as being born about 1858 in Arkansas, as well as their daughter Lula. Elizabeth does not appear after the 1900 census for Garland, Hempstead County & in 1910 George is living with his son William & his wife Settie (Garland, Hempstead County). After 1910 I do not find George in census records.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Lena

My grt gf was Wm. I Cogburn born 1872 in Arkansas. Have just found an elderly cousin who seems to think he was born in Hope, Hempstead Co. His father died prior to his birth, placing this between abt. July 1871-April '72; a great aunt thinks this was an accident rather than illness and possibly with a horse. We do not have his name nor anymore about him, which is one of our primary interests. If Wm. was born in Hope, very possibly this is where his father died. It is thought this is where Wm's mother remarried. She was Louisa Amanda White and we've also had difficulty tracing further back in her family. She was born 1854 possibly in GA. She remarried Adam F. Whisenhunt.

Wm reportedly had uncles Geo. & Andy who came to visit him in Taylor Co TX from Ark; family history is that they were hiding out from the law at that time.

We have found that Henry (have seen sources report his birth as both TN & SC) & Emmeline Margaret Johnson Cogburn had sons by the name of Geo & Andrew as well as a Wm b. TN 1851, which would be an appropriate date for our Wm's father. There seems to be descendant info on Henry's children, but not on Wm; could he have died young & our Wm named for his father?

Is there anyone out there with family history and/or stories, etc, that can shed a clue on my Wm. Cogburn and his parents? Anything at all would be so appreciated. Thanks, Sandra
Bruce who was born in North Carolina about 1854.

Joseph was married to Loucinda and had two sons George and Willie.

William Madison Bruce (aka Matt Bruce) first married Martha Briggs and later married Alice Ogden (Augden, Ogburn).

I also found three sisters Jane, Mary, and Hannah who were born in Arkansas:

Jane was born about 1864 and married Willis Goff.

Mary was born about 1870 and married Andrew Walker.

Hannah was born about 1873 and first married Samuel Draper and later married John Sampson.

There may be other brothers and sisters.

Based on what I have found, I suspect that William's parents were in Arkansas by the 1860's and were there in the 1870's, but were probably dead by 1880.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Gary W.
Andrew J. Armstrong married Elizabeth King

In Cumberland County, KY in 1818 there are records concerning a William King, deceased, whose daughter Elizabeth had married Andrew J. Armstrong and who eventually moved on to Hempstead County, Arkansas

Cumberland County KY Deeds, Book J, page 196
Andrew J. Armstrong and wife Elizabeth of Hempstead County, Arkansas to Milton King and Joel Owsley; Elizabeth Armstrong was the only child of William King, deceased, who was one of the sons of John E. King, deceased; 1/7 part of fractional part of Lot No. 34 deeded to John E. King by Trustees;
dated 8 June 1818, recorded 24 August 1836

There are two Lincoln County records in 1816 and 1817 about the estate of a William King:

Minutes of County Court, Lincoln County, Tennessee
Volume "Mar 1814 - Nov 1816", Page 282, 5 February 1816

On motion of Peter Melson and it appearing to the satisfaction of Court that William King, late of this County, died intestate, administration on the estate of the said William is granted to the said Peter who regularly qualified and gave bond with security as the law directs.

TSLA, Lincoln County Will Book Volume "March 1809 - April 1824", page 153, May term 1817
Probate Records, Estate of William King

An Inventory of the personal property of William King deceased returned to May term 1817.
Money collected from different persons who ware (sic) indebted to William King as will appear from his accounts and memorandums. -- $ 160.00
One note on George C. Bogs and uncertain whether it will be collected -- $100.00
(total) $260.00

Peter Melson, administrator
A true copy from the original file in my office
Brice M. Garner, Clerk

Because Peter Melson came to Lincoln County, TN from Cumberland County, KY, it is natural to investigate a possible connection with this William King.

Does anyone have any additional information on this (these?) William King(s) or know of families who moved from Lincoln County, TN or Cumberland County, KY to Hempstead County, Arkansas?

Reuben Moren of Hempstead County, Arkansas

I trying to find out more info on a Reuben Moren. He lived in Hempstead County, Arkansas from 1830's thru 1880's. Somehow he was related to an Abner Moren of the same county since Reuben was an adminstrator of his estate. Also it appears that he was married to three different women between 1830's-1880's. Not sure what his first wife's name was, but she must have died in the 1840's. His second wife whom he married on May 2, 1851 was named Racheal Freeman. She was the daughter of William and Sarah Reed and had been married previously. At some point Racheal died. Then Reuben married a third time sometime in the 1870's to a women from Texas named Anna. Through all of these marriages he had lots and lots of children.

Reuben lived close by to the William Reed family of Saline Twp. Hempstead County. In the 1850 census of Hempstead County, Arkansas, William Reed had two people listed in his household named Madison Moren 14 and Prudence Moren 18. Also William Reed and Reuben Moren are listed together in the 1840 census and the 1850 Slave Schedule for Arkansas.

I am trying to determine if Madison Moren is the same M. S. Moren that was born 15 Nov 1837 and later lived in Saline County, Ark. M. S. Moren enlisted during the Civil War in Co. K, 6th Arkansas Cavalry, at Magnolia, Arkansas, June 21, 1862. He was detailed as a teamster on July 14, 1862; present to June 30, 1863. After the war he filed Arkansas pension application #10691 from Saline County, August 28, 1901. Also M. S. Moren married a Mary C. Dale? on 22 Sep 1859. M. S. Moren did have a son named Madison, so I think the M. stood for Madison as well. For a short time M. S. Moren lived in Louisana, but he came back to Arkansas and died on 25 June 1902

Also I want to get more info on Reuben Moren, who his parents were, who he was married to the 1st time, and what the names of there children were.

Any info will be very helpful, Thanks.

Hiram McCanless-Manolia --?-- Marriage ~1835 Hempstead Co.

Hiram McCANLES (various spellings) was found on the bank of the Red River in 1825, made the ward of Peter LEATHERMAN, who bound him out to Willis (Billy) WILSON in Hempstead Co. Court that year. ( I do not know of any siblings or parents for Hiram.) About 1835 Hiram married Manolia --?-- . I am seeking Manolia's maiden name & their marriage date. They had 5 children before Manolia died after the Nov. 1850 census. [ Where was she buried? ] Hiram McC. remarried 9 August 1851 to Susannah GRIFFING BROWN. They had 5 children. According to Masonic records, Hiram died in March 1867 in Moscow, Hempstead Co.. presumably buried at the Moscow Methodist Church Cemetery. Susannah took her children to TX before 1870. Any information on this family or surnames mentioned will be sincerely appreciated.

I am looking for any information on Edwin Hardin who was in the Hempstead co. in the early 1800s. He had at least 3 children:Naphania (b. 1826..md Joseph Bowman in Hemp. Co in 1843), Sylvania (b. 1829..md John Hall in Hemp. Co. in 1843) and Abraham. He was later listed in Sevier Co. and in 1850 the 3 children and their families had moved to Texas. I think that Edwin's father was Abraham and that Edwin's wife may have been Native American. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Will gladly exchange info.

I am trying to research the Webb family for a friend who does not have access to the Internet. Her grandfather was William Andrew Webb, born 26 Aug 1869 in Hempstead County, AR, died 21 Oct 1944 in Hempstead Co. At some point, William and his wife Laura lived in Hickman County, Kentucky, and later in St. Louis, MO. His first wife was Lula Winchester; they had at least two children, one of whom was my friend's father. By his second marriage to Laura, he had at least seven children according to the 1920 census. Most of these are probably also deceased, as is my friend's father (Coy Dee Webb), but I'm not listing their names at this point.

Any help will be appreciated.

Can anyone do a cemetery lookup for me? I am looking for the grave of Wiley G. Armor. He was born 20 Dec.1835 in Georgia and died 26 Aug. 1891 in Georgia. I believe he came to Hempstead County after 1880 from Paulding County, Georgia with some Hunts also from Paulding County. The Hunts may have been Frederick Stewart Hunt or Lewis Edward Hunt and their families. Wiley's daughter, Mary Talullah, had married another Hunt brother who went on to Texas. I know some of the Hempstead County Hunts are buried in the Ayers Cemetery, so this may be a possibility.
Thanks in advance.
Shirley Mendelson
Austin, Texas

My great grandfather, George Thomas Curtis b. 1853 in Linn Co Mo. married Nancy Ann Hill b. 1870 in Barton Co Mo. They married in 1889 at Crawford Co Ar. and lived near Springhill, Hempstead Co Ar. My Grandfather, John Henry Curtis was born in Springhill in 1895. My Great Grandfather died in Springhill in 1896 and we are looking for his grave site in that area. My grandmother used to tell us kids a story about Nancy being confronted in her home by a neighbor. and to stop his advances she got a pistol kept in a fire wood box and shot him. The man died while leaving the property. I was wondering if anyone outthere has heard of such a story. Lige Hill (Nancy's step brother was 6 or 7 and was in the front yard at the time. He told his grand daughtes the same story.
thanks.

Rogers, Anderson, Coffee, Dickson

I am wondering if anyone is researching the following family?
Henry Rogers and Temperance Anderson married in Hempstead in 1834.
On 1850 census. Temperance RoDgers is listed with three children: Wm., Perlinia and what looks like Hester.
In 1854 there is a marriage for Polly Rogers and Jesse Coffee.
In 1857 there is a marriage for an Esther J. Rogers and Wm. A. Dixon/Dickson.

In 1865 an E. Jane Dickson married John Mooring in Hunt Co. Texas. On the 1870 Hunt Co. Texas census, in John and E. Jane Mooring's household there is a 15 year hold Martha Dixon and a 56 year old Temperance Coffee.

I'm thinking but have not proved that the above mentioned Polly Rogers who married Jesse Coffee is Temperance Anderson Rogers Coffee and that Martha Dixon is E. Jane's daughter from her first marriage.
Also, that E. Jane is Esther Jane Rogers Dixon Mooring.
Note: Temperance Coffee and Martha Dixon Tolbert are buried near E.J. Mooring in Rains Co. Texas.

Any help on this family would be appreciated,
Chrystal
cbt70@bellouth.net
