Andrew J. Smith family of Greene County Arkansas

I would like to correspond with anyone who is a descendant of the family of Andrew J. Smith of Greene County, Arkansas. As nearly as I can determine, Andrew J. Smith was married at least twice, first to Angeline?? and then to Martha Ann??. The 1850 and 1860 census records show that there were at least 11 children born to Andrew J. Smith (John b. 1839, Mary S. b. 1843, Isaac b. 1846, James b. 1848, Cynthia b. 1849, Michael b. 1853, A. J. b. 1854, Eliza b. 1855, Charley P. b. 1857, Betty J. b. 1859, and Frasier b. 1860) although it is not clear which of the last few children were born to Angeline and which to Martha Ann.

I am fairly certain that Charley P. and Betty J. (perhaps Elizabeth) Smith were born to Martha Ann because they appear with her in the 1870 census in the household of J. W. Pool, the man she married after the death of Andrew J. Smith. Also present in the household were two sons by Pool: Jechoniahs Pool and Daniel R. (Richardson) Pool.

I am hoping to contact someone who might provide me with a lead as to the maiden name of Martha Ann as well as any other information about her or either her Smith or Pool children. I am a Pool descendant, and have only been able to follow Daniel R. Pool into the post-1880 censuses. Although he married, both of his sons died before adulthood, so my hope is to find a Smith descendant who may be able to tell me more.
Harriette ‘Hattie’ Clark m. Henry Wilson ‘H. W.’ Woosley

Harriette ‘Hattie’ Clark m. Henry Wilson ‘H. W.’ Woosley
Looking for information on:
Harriette ‘Hattie’ Clark was born January 11, 1881, in Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee and died between 1969 and 1970 in probably Texas, according to family stories; family stories also mention that she was married three times.

She was married probably first to Henry Wilson ‘H. W.’ Woosley of Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas – Henry was born November 03, 1867 in Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee and died after 1949 (will recorded that year) in Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas – they were both buried in Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas; Hattie was 90 when she died in about 1970 in probably Texas.

Hattie and Henry had one child:
Mary H. Woolsey born about 1912 in probably Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas (some say maybe Bald Knob, White County, Arkansas) – Mary probably died in Chicago, Illinois. (Mary was probably named after Hattie’s sister.) Mary was in both the 1920 and the 1930 Census’ with her parents. Mary married R. C. Baxter – married in 1938 in Greene County, Arkansas.

Henry’s parents were: John H. Woosley born January 3, 1839 and died February 21, 1872 at age 33 years, one month and 18 days, both in Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee – buried Willow Mount Cemetery, Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee; married Wilmoth Adelaide ‘Addie’ Fuqua born October 12, 1841 in Madison County, Alabama ((some say in Bedford County, Tennessee) and died August 08, 1893 at age 51 years, 9 months and 27 days in Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee – married January 24, 1865 in Bedford County, Tennessee. In 1860 John was working on his mother’s farm in Shelbyville. Addie was left a young widow at age 30 with and infant son, Henry; in 1880 she, as head of household, lived with Henry, her mother Eliza A. Fuqua, and her sister Eliza G. Fuqua in Bedford County, Tennessee.

Any further information on this family would be appreciated,
lindajcox@hotmail.com

I'm searching for info about my gg-grandfather John Bradberry and family. His wife was Sarah Anne McClure, son George McClure Bradberry (b. 1846 in Weakley Co. TN). The family moved to Greene Co. from TN between 1850 and 1860 and then moved to Lake Co. TN near Ridgely between 1870 and 1880. They are mentioned in "Fathers of the Ridge", Vol 3. In the 1860 census they are in Concord twp and Sally House, age abt 24, is living with them. In the 1870 census they are in Johnson twp, Sally House is no longer with them, and George McClure has married Healon Alice (Allie) Fite, in May 1870 in Marmaduke. John appears to have middle initial "A".The last name is spelled three different ways on the same page of an old family bible. Any help greatly appreciated.

I am looking for the parents of Hillery Cole and his sister, Mary Cole. Mary Cole married Charles Cannon in 1904 in Greene County. It has been reported that the Cannon's lived in Paragould. Hillery Cole was my grandfather-in-law and spent most of his adult life in Piggott, Clay Co. Rumor has it that the family came from Bradford, AR but I have not been able to find anything. Hillery and Mary's parents were G.E. Cole and Bessie McDonald, I believe. Can anyone assist me? Thanks.
I am looking for info on William Speer, he was born 1819-1819 KY. He shows up in Panola Co., MS in an 1850 census married to Jane Buchanon she died 1857. Then he marries Nancy Hillard Edwards not sure as to marriage date, but mostly likely in Panola Co., MS. I am looking for an 1870 census, I can find him in 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses and he died in 1898. I am not sure if he died in Circa and is this truly in Green Co., AR? I would love to know more about William Speer's and his parents names as well.

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me, I'm looking for information about my grandmother's family from Marmaduke, Greene Co, Missouri. Her maiden name is Laverne Carroll, born 1913 and married Cecil Williams. She had two sisters, Ailene and Wilma, and one brother, Raymond Carroll. Their parents were Buron Buford Carroll and Eunice Haneline (sp?).

This is "BB"s family from the 1900 census:
Carroll, Mary jan 1855 45 tn
Carroll, Sarah A nov 1877 22 Tn
Carroll, William T apr 1880 20 Ar
Carroll, Gilla R july 1882 17 Ar
Carroll, B B nov 1886 14 Tx
Carroll, Aurellious G aug 1888 11 Ar
His father was James T Carroll and mother was Mary Potts. Some of the sibling's names on that census were a bit mangled by the census taker.

I know that BB owned a store in the Marmaduke area, my grandmother met my grandfather when he was working for BB as a delivery driver for the store.

Any help would be appreciated as would finding any relatives lurking out there.

After receiving the probate record for my 2nd Great grandfather, George Krofft, I found it interesting his estate would be responsible for the coffin and burial of Will Jackson (also found as W.H. Jackson). George Krofft died May 3 1889, I would assume Will Jackson died not long before that date.

Unless Will Jackson was a minor, why would George be responsible for his burial? I'm curious if anyone might know who this Will (W.H) Jackson is? His age? what circumstances might have placed him under George's charge?

The farm was located in Jones Township, between Delaplaine and O'Kean. Needless to say, I was very surprised (and a bit bewildered) to find this in the record.

I am looking for information on saw mills in this area. Is Greene county near Poinsett County? I am doing historical research and would like to find out more information about the time period 1900s - 1920s and the migration of people from southern illinois to Arkansas.
I am speculating it had to do with available land, timber and saw mills but I would appreciate anyones insight.

Also, if you have any personal diaries, journals from men specifically I would be interested inusing them for my research. You and your source will be mentioned in the bibliography.
Thank you,

John Ryer Thomason

I am looking for the Family of John Ryer Jeff Davis Enoch Turner Thomason born 1864 in Kentucky; one brother known George Washingtom Eli Columbus Thomason born about 1859. Both were said by elderly family members to have come from Greene County, Arkansas. Their mother was from Kentucky, their father from Arkansas. Family stories say John Ryer was born 6 months after his father marched away to war. Father probably Confederate soldier (by John Ryer's added given name "Jeff Davis"), also may have had releative "Enoch Turner" or Enoch Turner Thomason". One of the brothers was said to have been named after their father. Both brothers settled in Hunt County, Texas at least by 1883. Delbert Thomason, son of George W. Thomason recollected his father was a small bult man who liked to fight; also that his father would show him how to do something, then say "That's the way my father taught me." Delbert also recalled his father having owned a farm in Greene County, Arkansas, and vividly remembers his father receiving a letter from his farm tenant in Greene County recounting his troubles in which the fence had burned and a cyclone tore down the barn. Any help would be appreciated. We've looked for this family for years. John Ryer was known to have kept impeccable records in a large family bible but it was reputed to have burned in a house fire about 1929 in Hunt County, Texas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Responses
