Thank you! I'm planning another trip at some point, so this will be something to add to my to do list. I was wanting early newspapers (pre-1900) and Little Rock had a few, but not all...and of course, not what I was needing. But, anything that can help will get me one step closer to completing the puzzle!

We made the trip to the Salem newspaper a couple of weeks ago to get copies of obits from their books of old newspapers. We called ahead to get their hours and told them we were coming the next day and why we were coming. They were very nice there - but we ran into some problems. They DO NOT have a copy machine that they will let you use. We were told "the big copy machine broken down and they never got it fixed." The newspapers start with a few books in the 40s - up to present. Because they were bound in books the obits located in the spine were very had to see.
It is a decent size building - but the room next to where the books are kept is their conference room. Even though we drove 455 miles one way – and called the day before – we had to leave at 1:30 before we were done, as they needed the room for a meeting and they did not have another room we could use.
We got some obits – but I still need a lot more. I was lucky I took a scanner with me. It didn’t help with the ones in the spine. We tried taking some of those with our digital camera. They are not the best but readable. For the one very tight in the spine you must copy by hand and it is time consuming as they are hard to just read.
When I have more days off I plan another trip to Little Rock to get more off the microfilm they have for Fulton County. You can check to see what dates they have at the link listed below.
http://www.ark-ives.com/documenting/newspapers.asp

Hope this helps the others needing Fulton County obits.
I found some good things, but not what I was wanting. On our way home (Texas), we stopped in Little Rock. The newspapers I needed, of course, they didn't have. What years do they have in Salem I wonder??? I might try to email them and see...

To my knowledge there is no microfilm of Fulton Co., newspapers in Fulton Co. If all you're wanting is microfilm, then you'd have to go to Little Rock, and then it may be kinda sparse.
E-mail the Ark. History Commission (it's in Little Rock) and see what they've got on Fulton Co. before you go, to make sure it's worth your while to go.
As I said in my previous posting. If all you're wanting is obits, then you can go to the Salem newspaper office and they have original newspapers bound in books that you can look thru. They were not indexed the last time I was there.
Some of the newspapers are really old and they let people handle them, I would recommend if you go to Salem to take a pair of white cotten gloves to wear when you handle them.
Fulton Co., does have a small library, and it has fairly good Fulton co., stuff, but no newspapers, and I'm quite sure no obits.
Hope all this helps you out. Wish you the best in your search. I would offer to go to Salem for you, but due to my health 'bout the only place I drive to now is a couple of miles to church.

Mary

Laws Talburt bn 1834 TN, wife of Thomas Simeon Talburt. She was the daughter of William "Billie" Laws and Laura Hicks. I am trying to determine if Elizabeth may be the daughter of the William Laws listed in Fulton county in 1860. She married Thomas Simeon Talburt in about 1856 and they lived in Fulton county.
I would appreciate any information on these people.
Norman Price

In the Fulton County Arkansas History and Families book there is a story on the community of Sturkie where I live. It mentions a William G. Sturkie establishing the first post office in 1894. This could be the same as your William R. Sturkie since many times the census records are hard to read. The story goes on to say he was born in South Carolina in 1841 and came to Fulton County from Lowndes County Mississippi sometime between 1870 and 1880. It mentions a wife, Mary Jane, and ten children but does not give the children's names.

I have lived in the Sturkie community since I was 4 months old and have heard talk of Mr. Sturkie from my parents and others of their generation but there are no descendents of him still living here that I know of. I helped write the story on the Sturkie Community for the history book but my contributions was of later years. .

My email is ndlewis@centurytel.net if you want to contact me.
Her "Aunt Bonnie" that she refers to was a different Bonnie. That Bonnie is Benny Strausers daughter. Benny was a half brother to our George Washington Strauser the father of Allie and Clarence. Thus he was Uncle Benny to Allie and Clarence. Bonnie is a wonderful long time researcher of our Strauser line and her and I have shared loads of information over the years. Just a tidbit here. If there is anything I can do to help you out or you I please let me know. Trishj@frontiernet.net

Hi Jane,

Hope you get this message - your posting I just found is a good while back; would love to talk with you regarding these BURRUS families; they are in my direct lines. My 3rd Gr.Grandmother Frances An/Ann BURRUS, born aprx. 1811, Overton Co., TN, married James MARTIN, born aprx 1800/1805, NC, in a county which later became part of TN; they migrated to S.W. MO area around 1835/36; their 'son William Wesley Martin' aka "Wesley" Martin is my 2nd Gr.Grandfather.

"Wesley" Martin's daughter, "Frances Rosa Martin" was born in "Fulton Co, Salem, AR", Sept. 1879, while enroute from S.W. MO to visit BURRUS & MARTIN relatives in the 'Fulton Co, AR' area -- my Wesley's Mother was Frances Ann (BURRUS) Martin. My Burrus & Martin family members are connected to the Burrus & Martin families in Dent Co, MO as well. Frances Rosa (Martin) married William R. Sperry in Eureka Springs, Carroll Co, AR; they are my 'Great Grandparents' and they raised my own Mother from her birth until she married.

The 'Thomas Burrus & George Burrus' you mentioned in your message dated 16 Nov. 2004, are members of my 3rd Great Grandmother Frances (Burrus) Martin's family. Would love to exchange information, records, photos, etc., with you & determine what level of family connections we share.

Feel free to contact me directly at:

JCrouch94@sbcglobal.net

Hope too hear from you soon. Thanks for any help, and information, etc., you are willing to share on these BURRUS and/or MARTIN families!

I am the great granddaughter of William R Sturkie. I would love more information on Sarah Ona Keller Sturkie. ( or any other of the Sturkie family)

I have learned that this was his first wife and they did indeed have a son Henry Forrest. They also had a son Oliver that died at the age of 5 in 1899. Sarah died in 1900 and is buried in Sturkie Arkansas.

William R Sturkie died in Oklahoma. buried in the Westlawn cemetery Henryetta OK His wife at the time of death was Ollie Louise Sturkie, they married in 1908. They had 4 children together, one of those being my grandmother Bertie Nahoma Sturkie.

Are you related to the Sturkies?

I would appreciate any information you might have.

Thanks

Rachel Ross, Van Ross - Vinegar Hill

Hello:

I am researching the Ross - Phillips family of Jackson County, Arkansas. Among my grandmother's pictures is a photo of Rachel Ross and also a picture of Van Ross. On Van was born Vinegar Hill, Fulton County according to the handwriting on the back of the picture. I do not know if that is the correct last names, since I would think that Rachel would have married and no longer had the last name Ross.

Here is some more information about her parents, Marion and Mollie Ross which can be found in the 1900 and 1910 census of Bird.

Marion Ross born 1848 or 1862 in Tenneessee or Missouri
Mollie (also seen as Mallie)Ross (maiden name unknown) born about 1879 in Missouri or Arkansas
Children are:
Barbara Ross born 1891 in Arkansas. Married George Henry Dunkin born 1883 in West Plains, Missouri.
Emma Ross born 1896 in Arkansas. may have married Edward Starkey and had child Hattie Starkey as shown on 1920 census of Village, Jackson, Arkansas.
Rena Ross born 1897 in Arkansas
Minnie Ross born 1898 in Arkansas
Madie Ross born 1898 in Arkansas
Virgie Ross born 1906 in Arkansas
Lula Ross born 1900 and died in 1907 in Arkansas. She is buried in the Gracelawn Cemetery as well as Emma Starkey.

Also possibly these children: They are also shown in the 1920 census with Mollie in the Starkey household.
Thomas Ross born 1902
Florence Ross born 1911
Sarah Ross born 1913

Mollie died 1923 in Tuckerman. I do not know the death date for Marion. I do not know where she or Marion are buried.

I suspect that Marion may have a brother John Ross as shown on the 1880 census for Oak Grove, Oregon, Missouri.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am happy to share what I have as well.

Brenda - markandbrendajones@clearwire.net
I have a scan of a photo postcard that has four people standing in front of a black Model A or T (sorry) Ford. This was in the possession of Hester Evelyn Shrable Brown of the Vidette, Fulton County, Arkansas, area. On the back the writing (old, fountain pen writing) says 'Lucy Newberr'. I don't know if it was sent to Lucy Newberry or if she is one of the subjects. I would be happy to email it to someone from the appropriate family. Marianne Cowan Pyeatt

We have Joseph B. McGlasson's death as 1898 and we assume that he died in Fulton Co. AR, but we have been unable to find any evidence to support this date. We don't have much on Prudence Jane. She was 7 yrs of age in Joseph B. McGlasson's household in the 1850 Ouachita Co. AR census and in the 1860 Fulton Co. AR census, she was probably the 17 yr old "Jane" in J.B. McGlasson's household. You have that she was called "Plina". Would you know if she had a married name?

Jim and Wanda

Yes, this "Plina" Jane McGlasson's first marriage was to a COOK. Have found a Pauline born about 1843 AR as the wife of William L. COOK in Newton County AR 1870. They have a son, William T. born about 1865 AR. Prudence Cook married George Bond, 1872, Pope County AR. She is known to her Bond's children as Plina Jane. Plina died 1889, Redland, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. (This is now Sequoyah County OK).
Lavona

There is a J. B. McGlasson, 38, In the household of J. A. Smith, for the 1880 Fulton County AR census.

Prudence "Plina" Jane (McGLASSON) COOK BOND is dead by 1900. George Bond or Bonds with 3rd wife and children can be found on the 1900 census for Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.

Plina's son, William T. Cook, can be found on the 1900 Logan County Arkansas census. 1910 Garvin County OK. After that William and some of the children went to Texas. His children change the spelling of COOK to COOKE.

Note: Prudence Jane McGlasson and George Bond's children were all born at Paris, Logan County AR. And some of William T. Cook's childre were, also, born at Paris.
