I am looking for the current address of the treasurer for Rankin Cemetery, or the bank that has the custodial account. My grandparents Joseph Robert Crocker and Julia Stockton Crocker and other family members are buried there. Can anyone help me?

Also if anyone could visit the cemetery and take a photograph of their gravestones I would be very grateful.
Thank you.
Alix Coal Mining History

Jan Owens of Greenwood, AR and I have been communicating about coal mining in Franklin County. She suggested I post this information, which I shared with her.

My boyhood home was in Alix, and located in the NE 1/4 of SE 1/4, Sect. 23, Township 9 North, Range 26 West. The coal mine map you sent me a link to, Blue Hills Mining, is located in the NE 1/4 of NW 1/4, Section 31, Township 9 North, Range 25 West.

Only 1/2 of Range 26 West, Township 9 North, is in Franklin County, the rest being east in Johnson County. Since the Blue Hills mine (and also Rafter Mine, Hill Mine, and Douglas Mine) (all shown on same map) are in Range 25 West, Township 9 North, that means all of those mines were located just east of Alix, (Franklin County) in Western Johnson County. Going by local towns and
communities, they would appear to have been located southwest of Coal Hill, and east of a small community locally called Norton Town.

(It seems that I've read somewhere that the Rafter Mine was first owned by Abe Stiewel and his brother, and perhaps just first called the Stiewel Mine.
The Stiewel Brothers also had a mine at Spadra, called the Eureka Mine. Abe Stiewel opened the first sizable coal operation in the Coal Hill - Western Johnson County area, (east of Alix) back in around 1877. The Stiewel brother's pit boss at the Eureka Mine, in Spadra, was ambushed, shot and killed during a strike, in 1893.

My dad, James (Jim) Primm, born 1897, started working in the coal mines in and near Alix at age 14. My dad joined the Arkansas Militia (now National Guard) at 16 (lied
about his age). By 19, he joined the army and left Alix. During World War I, my father's lungs were seriously injured with Phosgene poison gas. After the war, he twice attempted to return to mining, but was unable to do it and
would "break down" and have to be sent by the army to a public health service hospital (there were no V. A. Hospitals at that time). He lived in Alix the rest of his life, though, until he died in 1971. His father before him had taken up coal mining, but died in an epidemic at age 28. His step-grandfather, James Monroe (Uncle Jim) Primm, who raised him, mined for many years. My maternal grandfather, Ervin A. Burchfield, had been an underground miner in Birmingham, AL, but after being injured in a rock fall, in 1906, (had surgery and a small plate of silver put in his skull) he was never allowed to work underground again. He moved from there to the Denning, AR area, though, and worked top side at Western Coal and Mining No. 2, in Denning, for about 10-years.

There were a few underground mines still operating in the Alix and Denning area when i was a kid. Jim Lewis had a mine just west of the Johnson County Line, in Southeast Alix. It was called the Soupbone. Later, he sold it to four brothers named Kranc, who renamed it the Big Four. It closed in around 1947. Western No. 2, at Denning, was the longest running mine in the area, and closed somewhere around 1949 - 51, as I recall. There was one smaller mine, located southeast of Denning, and west of Alix. I don't recall what they called it. In addition to Western Coal and Mining, out of St. Louis, several mines around
Alix were owned by local people with names like Dotson, Weishaupt, Melton, Lewis, and then--for a short time--Kranc. There were other smaller operations, from time to time. By the late 1930's and 1940's, when I was born and
growing up, all of our underground mines were union mines. The United Mine Workers of America Hall at Alix was originally a two story building, but a storm destroyed the upper story and it was re-roofed as a one story building. In the 1940's, the union local still had meetings there, but it was also used on Sundays and Thursday nights as a church, by the Alix Assembly of God. I can recall a lot of people just calling it "The Church at the Hall" or "The Hall Church." After mining ended in Alix, and the local disbanded, the union hall became the full-time home of the Alix Aseembly of God Church, and the Assembly still meets there to this day. Although it was before my time, in the heyday of Alix mining, there were a number of camps operated by Western Coal and Mining Company, and each spring itinerant miners would arrive, often on freighcars, and live in the mining camps. The camps were known by the number of the mine to which they were attached: No. 1 camp, and so forth. A lot of the itinerant miners, as well as their families, were rough people who lived crudely and were bad about drinking alcohol and fighting. These were a strong contrast to the year around miners, who were fine citizens, kept their modest homes up well, raised nice gardens, and usually also farmed a little as a sideline.
There was a mining operation at Philpot Valley, north of Altus, that was non-union. The non-union men came down to Altus one Saturday, in trucks, and them and the Altus area union men had a big fight in the city park.

Quite a bit of interesting history of the mining in Western Arkansas. I find it quite interesting. Unfortunately, I waited too late to ask questions
and record stories, so my information is limited.

While he was alive, I failed to record any of the stories my dad told me, but i know he first began mining, working with his step-grandfather, who'd raised him, as a team. They were paid 50-cents per car load and, worked together
as a team, loading and firing their own shots, breaking, loading, and doing all the work. Together they could blast out, dig, and load out four cars of coal a day and earn $2. My dad turned all but about a quarter a day of his part of the earnings over to his step-grandfather.

While I don't remember the mines my dad and his step-grandfather worked in, I know the first one was a slope mine. It may have been The Packet Slope, but I'm not sure. While talking to an older Alix man, John Workman, about 15-years ago, he told me that my dad worked awhile at the Rafter Mine (which, according to the
map) adjoins Blue Hills, and was just a short distance east of Alix, in western Johnson County. The last mining in the area where Blue Hills, Rafter, etc. were located was strip mining of the coal closer to the surface. Some of that stripping also occurred in the extreme eastern part of Franklin County, in Alix, but close to the Johnson County line. That strip mining occurred in the late 1940's, around 1947-49. It seems I remember hearing of a couple of guys doing a little underground mining a little later than
that, in a very small "dog hole'operation, just across the Franklin County border, in Johnson County. I sure wish I'd had the interest in this, when I was young, that I do now. We
had old guys around Alix and Coal Hill who could have given me every detail. A little of the coal mining history of western Johnson and Eastern Franklin
counties was recorded by a retired teacher, native of Coal Hill, Mary Maude Gallagher. I'm not sure whether she's still living or not. If anyone reading this has any more details on the mines or mining in Alix or nearby Denning, I'd love to hear from them.

Gerald Primm (now of Mulberry, but raised in Alix)

POW/MIA Korean War, Franklin Co. NEWELL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Charleston, Franklin County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: JAMES CARL NEWELL
Born: June 21, 1932
Date of loss: November 15, 1952

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Franklin County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Miller and wife Elizabeth who was a St. Clair. Also, a 4-yr old son of the Miller couple.

I am posting this information for anyone that might have a connection to this Elizabeth St. Clair or her husband.

I believe this Elizabeth may have been related to my great grandfather G. W. St. Clair and would like to know that the headstone (even if it is broken) is preserved. If anyone has the means, I would like to see the stone placed in the G. W. St. Clair family cemetery which is near there rather than be destroyed.

Elizabeth & Jeptha Langley of Prairie, Franklin, AR

Hello. I was wondering if anyone out there knows if Jeptha Langley, found living in Prairie, Franklin, AR in 1900 is related in any way to Elizabeth Langley found in Prairie, Franklin, AR in 1870. In 1870 Elizabeth is living with a Harwood, Angeline, and a Jane Langley.

An Elizabeth Langley married a William H. Anderson on 17 Nov. 1872 in Franklin co, AR. My gg-grandfather's name was William H. Anderson, and he is found in 1900 living in Prairie, Franklin, AR, not far from Jeptha Langley... hence the reason I am questioning if Jeptha was related to Elizabeth. Perhaps my gg-grandfather still kept in contact with the Langley family after Elizabeth died?

Thanks in advance for any info regarding Jeptha, Elizabeth, or the Langley families that lived in Franklin co, Arkansas. :-)

Thanks so much for any information.
John Campbell Galloway obituary

I have a tattered old obit for my ancestor John Campbell Galloway, who died 22 January 1913 at his home in/near Lavaca. It's signed by J. H. O'Bryant. Unfortunately, I don't know what newspaper it's from. I'm looking for a clean copy, along with the critical info on the newspaper, page, and column.

J.C. was apparently very active in his church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in his community, so perhaps there's another obit of him in a church publication. His wife, Henrietta Proctor Galloway, died in 1900.

Any help on finding these obits would be most appreciated!
I posted on the other board and they said I should give this one a try:

My name is Chanel Walker and I am looking for any info on my family. I was raised in foster homes and only have a few names and Arkansas as a location. My granparents Hershel(hershell?)/Hershal DOW and Myrtle Mae (nee TOWERY) were born, and married in Arkansas. My grandmother Juanita (WALKER/JEFFERS/DEFRATIS *ALL MARRIED NAMES*)DOW and my grandfather Donald Daniel WALKER were also married in Arkansas I believe. I can't find anything what so ever on my grandparents Juanita and Donald or even my grandparents. If you can help I would greatly appreciate it.

I am looking for infomation on my husbands family. His grandfather was thought to be born somewhere in Franklin County (White Rock Mountain?)--do not know the date but probably somewhere between 1850-1890. Miles Anual Crabtree. He married Rose Ella Autry. He moved to Oklahoma but I do not know when, if it was before he married or after. He had a brother who at the time of his death lived in Crawford County Mulberry, AR. His name was Alfred Crabtree, born 1890, died June of 1984.
Any iformation would be helpful. The family thinks they originated around Tennesee or Kentucky.
I am looking for information on my gggrandfather William H Anderson. He was born in 1835 in GA according the the 1900 Franklin County census or in 1839 according to the 1910 Logan County census. His children are listed in the censuses, but no wife. I would like to find out who my gggrandmother is. The family says she was full-blooded Indian, but no one knows what tribe or what her name was. According the the above-mentioned censuses she was born in Texas. Looking for information on his wife or where they might be buried. Thanks!

I am not sure if anyone can help me or not, but I am looking for an article that was published by Sam H. Branch in 1934 and possibly a condensed reprint in 1940 or on December 30, 1970. I only have a terrible photocopy, but the title is "James Hunter Family History." James Madison Hunter lived in, according to different sources, Prairie, Branch, Franklin, Arkansas, so I e-mailed the Spectator Newspaper. Unfortunately, the copy does not name the original publisher. I would like to get a copy of the original article if it is possible to do so. If anyone in the area might know where to search this article out, could you please point me in the right direction? I am unfortunately miles away in Nevada, but most of my ancestors came from Arkansas.

First paragraph of the condensed article reads:
"(Editor Note) The following article was written by Sam H. Branch in 1934 regarding his grandfather [James Madison Hunter]. It was necessary to condense the article somewhat because of space."

Thanks for any help!

I am wondering if the Stateham is a misspelling and should have been Strahan also and if this is a relative.
Thomas Hamblen died intestate, september 27, 1864. His son, Pleasant Walker Hamblen, Franklin County, AR, was appointed administrator to the Thomas Hamblen estate on May 31, 1866.

Question: Can I assume that those listed in the probate as heirs are, indeed, descendants of Thomas?

The reason for this question is that John D. Mullins, guardian of Martha J. and Julia A. Mullins, is listed as well. These three were children of Swift Flower Mullins and wife, Caroline, who both died during the Civil War. I have assumed that Caroline was the daughter of Thomas Hamblen. Thomas and Mary Hamblen did have an unnamed daughter between 5-10 years old in the 1830 census of Jackson County, MO. Do you think this is a fair assumption?

By the way, the current Mullins family researchers have Caroline as a Taylor, but have been unable to provide proof for me.

I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching the John Richard Doss family. In 1900 they are shown in Grant Township, Johnson County; and in 1910, 1920, 1930 they are in Alix Township, Franklin County, Arkansas.

A lot of the family is buried at Houston Cemetery which is west of Altus. The family had children named Fred, J. B., William, Henrietta, Lucy Margie, and Clara Amanda.

If you know anything about this family, please contact me....I believe there may be a family connection for me.

Joy Russell

I've read the web site page on township formations. However, I am still confused as to the boundary of Middle Twp. in 1850. Also, it looks like my family moved to Mullberry Twp. by 1860. In 1860, they were living in Pleasant Hill.

Can anyone clarify these boundaries for me?

Thanks,

Nancy

Looking for descendants or research help on Fate H. Carroll (1883-1956) and wife Ethel Ola Carroll, maiden name unknown (1887-1947). Both are interred in Baxley Cemetery, Paris, Logan Co., Arkansas. The household is in the 1920 census and 1930 census of Franklin County, Arkansas. Fate Carroll married Ethel circa 1907. Could someone look up this marriage in the Franklin County marriage records?

Would very much like to learn Ethel's maiden name, among other details. I have found a "community note" in the 3 Mar 1944 edition of the Tuckerman Record (Jackson Co., AR) which states, "O. L. Williamson is visiting his sister, Mrs. Ethel Carroll, at Paris, Arkansas." O. L. Williamson was the half-brother of my great-grandfather.

Mark Williamson

Am at an absolute stand-still with my paternal grandmother's family. Her name was Katie Zetta Motley and she was born in Franklin County in 1889 to George Motley b. 1859 AR and Matilda Seales b. 1860 AR. Katie had a sister named Ella O. b. 1883 in AR and Albert b. 1880 in AR. Albert apparently passed away sometime before 1900.

George's parents were John Motley b. 1820 in KY (or possibly NC) and Elizabeth ? b. 1835 in Alabama. They had five sons: James E. b. 1885 (no other info), John Edward b. 1856 (I have alot of info on him), George, Samuel b. 1861 in MO (apparently mentally retarded), and Lee b. 1869 in MO (have some info).

Does anyone have any info on any members of this family?

TIA!

Jan

Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Coving
