Gerald, I read your interesting account of coal mining in the Alix/Denning area. I lived with my grandma and grandpa just a few hundred feet from the entry to No. 2 mine, in a little white house. Mom and I went back and visited there around 10 years ago and much of it seemed the same. Grandpa was involved in the fight between union and non-union miners. The non-union was just a few fellows so they were greatly outnumbered. I asked Mom why grandpa was working non-union and she said he was trying to feed his family and couldn't get on at the union mines. During the fight someone stabbed grandpa and he somehow managed to get away from the mob. A storekeeper had been watching the melee and when grandpa drew near his store the storekeeper pulled him inside. The storekeeper put grandpa in a wagon and covered him with a tarp and took him as close to his (grandpa's) house as he safely could and let him out. Grandma patched grandpa up and he healed nicely. After that grandpa stayed out of town when everyone was likkered up. I'm sure grandpa was very grateful to that brave storekeeper. I would also be interested in the map of the mines. A cousin of mine visited one of the mines with his grandpa, my grandpa's brother, a few times and seems to have a great interest in all the mines, just like you do. Thanks
