I am looking for a tombstone transcription for a relative of mine who was last found in the 1920 Jasper, Crittenden Co. census. I do not know for sure if he died in Crittenden Co. but I believe it is possible. His name was Major Moore; he was born Sep 1868 in Posey Co., IN; his wife's name was Emma and she was born Sep 1871 in Illinois. In addition, if anyone knows anything about their children -- Everett (b. 1901); Myrtle (b. 1904) and Lois (b. 1906) I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

There is also a community between Earle and Marked Tree that is known as Black Oak. This would be in Crittenden County. I was raised just south of there and it was known as Black Oak for as long as I can remember. The name was changed to Oak Acres several years ago but the people in the area still refer to the community as Black Oak. This is where Johnny Rye's grocery was located for many years. I have been told that there is a cemetery to the east of the community and although I tried to find it, I've not been able to locate it.

He and his wife, Mary "Polly" moved to Memphis around 1850, and they lived in Jasper, Crittenden County for the 1860 census.

Elijah died in 1863 and is buried in Memphis.
Dear Rosemary,

I thought you would be interested in this little bit of history about your Great Grandfather:

"Levi Boon was Gilmore's first postmaster, receiving that appointment December 26, 1883.
Subsequent postmasters and the dates of their appointments were E. M. Ford, May 7, 1892;
Dewitt C. Joyner, July 6, 1892;...."

This is in a "History of Crittenden County, Arkansas by Margaret Elizabeth Woolfolk".

I research Crittenden County alot for my ancestors. I lived in Gilmore for four years with my grandfather Fred Boon. I knew a young Clinton Joyner, possibly Junior. You can find them in the U.S. Census records under Fogleman Township.

My email address is danieldx4@hotmail.com.

Good Luck.

Daniel Dixon
I grew up in this area, and I will share one piece of info with you. During the timeframe you are referring to, much of this area was either very swampy or flooded. I grew up in Trumann, AR and we did not have cemetery. Most of the residents of that area are buried in Marked Tree, AR. My grandfather, who settled in the area in the very early 1900s told me stories of the groundwater actually pushing coffins out of the ground during intense rain. From my understanding, the only place in the area stable enough for burial was Marked Tree.

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church - Jericho/James Mill Area

I was out working today on a photo essay about the decay of relics from family farms and farming communities. I found this old church, located about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile south of James Mill Road - West of I-55. (GPS 35.15.23.47N 90.14.35.62W)

I have established from old Topographic Maps that it was called Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. I was wondering if anyone had any information on this church. I am fascinated because in the decaying shell are all the pews, and two pianos. There is also a small cemetery there and I plan to go back out this week to catalog the people buried there so I can try and find more info.

Thanks in advance for any information anyone might have.

I am trying to find a part of my family that started in Tennessee and ended up in Crittenden County, Arkansas. I have cesus records that show that the Metcalf's are there until 1910, but i cannot find where they might be buried at or if anyone may have heard of them. The only daughter, Irena Elizabeth Metcalf married an S. A. Martin sometime in 1870 to 1880, I guess. I really been having a hard time with this one. Napoleon B. Metcalf was one of the sons and he fought for the Confederate side of the Civil War and I am trying to locate about where he is buried.

Thank you,
Chris Metcalf

My brother told me he used to go turkey hunting there and there was a cemetery on the island. I believe Eddie Saig's wife's people own it now. It was once a meeting place for the Indians.
Although Hughes, Arkansas, is just 20 minutes from here, it is not in my county. It is in St. Francis County. My next door neighbor is from there, and he said there is no town there . Perhaps there was back in the 1800's. This is just farmland near the river. There used to be a Church there, but it is long gone. He grew up just a mile from there. He said there used to be some tombstones 40 years ago, but that they may have been farmed over by now. He called the farmer who owns it now , but got no answer. He will try again tomorrow. I'll let you know if we discover anything. This will take a little investigating. It might help if you tell me whether this is a black cemetery or white one . There may be several if black. Jeanie

Re: Town of Council Bend

Earlier, I made a mistake. Council Bend is in Lee County, not St. Francis. Sorry. I have a History of Crittenden Co. and it says Council Bend was also known as Bledsoe's Landing. Steamboats stopped there, mostly to get wood for the boat's furnace . I gave this some thought. If they buried her there, they more than likely didn't have a tombstone. That would take a while. Also, the Miss. River has moved a few miles since 1850. (Changed its course.)The lowlands are all flooded here this time of year. It will be dry soon, and I'll drive out and check this area for you. Don't get your hopes up too high.Jeanie
