I am trying to find a part of my family that started in Tennessee and ended up in Crittenden County, Arkansas. I have cesus records that show that the Metcalf's are there until 1910, but i cannot find where they might be buried at or if anyone may have heard of them. The only daughter, Irena Elizabeth Metcalf married an S. A. Martin sometime in 1870 to 1880, I guess. I really been having a hard time with this one. Napoleon B. Metcalf was one of the sons and he fought for the Confederate side of the Civil War and I am trying to locate about where he is buried.

Thank you,
Chris Metcalf

Cemeteries for Gilmore, Fogleman, Tyronza

Searching the USGS for cemeteries in Crittenden County, I can't find a cemetery for residents of Gilmore, Fogleman, Tyronza. My 2nd great uncle, Benjamin Lyon, is listed in the 1920 census for Fogleman; my great aunt, Nellie Lyon, was born in 1907 Gilmore; my grandmother, Elsie Lyon, was born in 1911 Tyronza. I'm being optimistic I will find my 2nd great uncle and my great-grandfather, William Lyon (died abt 1911-1912), buried near these towns. Does somebody have a suggestion or addresses for cemeteries or funeral homes? I tried Yahoo's yellow pages, too. Thanks for your help.

A gunfight at Hacklers Lodge 1880's

See the attachments below. I have been looking for the location of "Hackler Ark." for a long time. This morning while reading some old family correspondence I narrowed my search down to Crittenden County, Arkansas and I now know Hacklers was a Lodge or boarding house and not a town. Does anyone know the location of this lodge or if it is still standing? Is there a location in Crittenden County where I might find additional information on this gunfight? George Combe Coatney (Courtney) was my great uncle. Thanks in advance for your considerations.
Don Coatney

James W. McClung was a Justice of the Peace in the 1850s in Crittenden County. He married Eliza Wallace in 1853, his second marriage. He was executor for his mother's estate. She was Margaret McClung (nee?) born 1796 in TN and probably married one of the early McClung men of Alabama.

James had a brother John and probably the Jane who married Oliver Lyles is a sister.

Is there a descendant or any researcher in the county who can give us a lead about the father of this family?

GREETINGS FROM GIBSON BAYOU

Gibson Bayou Church and Cemetery Fun Day
September 22, 2007 – 9:00 AM until ??
Located on Hwy. 149 North – 2 miles from Earle
Bake Sale – Silent Auction – Entertainment – Food – Drinks
New Revised Book of Church History and Names of People Buried There

It is hard to believe it has been almost a year since we had the great dedication/celebration of the Gibson Bayou rebuilt church. The committee had said that no event would be held this year but numerous requests have received asking to have another FUN DAY. The people who attended last year had such a good time and the ones that did not get to come have asked that it be held again so that they can attend.

Another Fun Day will be held on September 22, 2007. There will be a silent auction with items donated by friends of the church. Anyone who would like to donate something can get in touch with Jack Stepp at 870-792-7574. A bake sale will be held again this year. If you would like to help with this event, please contact Ellen Holloway at 870-792-7342.

Joe Wood has put together a new book with information from people that attended last year and answers to letters that he sent out. He has worked hard to try and get all the names and information corrected and updated. If you have information on any family or friends buried in the cemetery, please get this information to Joe at 870-792-8386.

More entertainment has been lined up for this year. Please bring your lawn chairs, your friends, and come spend the day. The Masonic Lodge members will again be doing the cooking in the concession stand. They did a great job last year and we appreciate their willingness to help out again.

Drawings will be held for a 32 inch Flat Screen LCD Television. Tickets will be available for a donation of $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. All funds raised will be used for care and upkeep of the Church and Cemetery. Tickets can be purchased from any committee member or will be available on the day of the event.

We would love to see you and your family on September 22nd. Come and stay all day and enjoy the music and visit with old friends.

Thanks, Debbie Lunsford Yates
POW/MIA Korean War. Crittenden Co. EATON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Crittenden County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: EDWARD DREW EATON
Born: Feb. 27, 1931. Caucasian
Date of loss: July 14, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Crawford County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Help Looking for Milton Boone 1942 Turrell? City Directories?

Hi all. I'm new to researching in Arkansas. I am hoping someone might be able to provide some help finding info on my hubby's grandma's husband, Milton Boone. Here is what we have so far:

Milton Boone, b. Apr 20 1894 in Colvin, Etowah County,AL

per WWII draft card of Apr 1942 he was then living at: Route 2, Box 118 Turrell Ark. with the person who would always know where he was listed as Ida Boone (wife, sister, or mother maybe?)

He later moved to Cardiff, Jefferson County, AL and married dh's grandma Olevia (Foster?) Motis/Mortis Nation Naughen Boone (yes, several marriages) in Oct. 1960. We've had a dickens of a time finding info on her so are hoping with more info on him we will be able to track something on her down.

Is there anyone who lives near there who might be willing and able to search the City Directories for Turrell at that time and see if you can locate him? I live several states away; any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks so much. If I think of any further relevant information I will post it. Thanks again.
Looking for J.A. and Rhoda Hodge

J.A. Hodge was born 1853 in S.C. Rhoda was born 1854 in Mississippi. I have no record of their marriage, but, they were listed on Crittenden County, Arkansas 1880 census with their children. Their oldest child was born in 1872. I am guessing they were probably married 1870-'71. I do not know Rhoda's maiden name. I believe their younger child, George, b. 1874 in Arkansas is my grandfather. I have not been able to find J.A. Hodge after 1880, but George and brother John moved to Jackson County, Arkansas by 1900, and started their own families. I would like to have an obituary for either one of them, if their death was in Crittenden County. If anyone knows of this family, any help would be appreciated. Brenda Baker

I am looking for any information on John Washington Griffin born March 9, 1872 Alabama, Married to Louella G Bardwell in 1895 Mississippi, and the family moved to Pulaski County Arkansas before 1920. He was a laborer, farmer. He died Dec. 6, 1928 possibly out of state, but possibly was buried in Earle, Arkansas according to a cousin. Louella died in 1952 in Little Rock, and is buried there. I don't know if the family was living in Crittenden for a while, or if John had a job he was working. These people are hard to track, any info would be helpful.
My great-uncle Thomas Gates and his wife Silvia Fagan lived in Crittendon County after they moved from Memphis, TN. They were married in Memphis in 1870. They were in Crittendon County in 1880. I wondered if Silvia died in Crittendon County because Thomas married again in 1896 in Perry County, Arkansas. I saw a Thomas and Silvia with two children but not sure if they were the same family. One of the girls was named Leanna Gates. I don't remember the other one.

Coincidentally, Uncle Tom's sister, Mary Elizabeth married a Fagan family member also - a man named Arch Humphrey who lived in Clarendon, Arkansas or Brinkley.

If anyone has information about Sylvia or her family, or about Arch Humphrey and his family please enlighten me.

Maggie Ponds

Is there anyone interested in volunteering to take digital photographs of headstones in Crittenden Memorial Cemetery and post them to the internet in response to requests from family members in other parts of the country?

I am currently a volunteer who takes photos in Memphis, TN cemeteries and posts them to the website called www.findagrave.com. You may use this free website to post burial information and photos. Others can request that photos be taken when they cannot personally visit the cemetery. There are currently quite a few requests for Crittenden County but no volunteers to fulfill the needs.

If you have any questions, you may visit the Find A Grave website, or if there is anything I might answer, you are welcome to contact me at carolemccaig@email.com.

Looking for the descendants of Henry Evans and Martha Branch Evans. They had two children Julia May and LV? . Henry's parents were both from SC. His father was either Joe or Henry. My ggrandfather was Henry J. Evans(SC) and he had a brother Joe who had 2 sons Henry and Joe who moved to Arkansas. At the last contact with a cousin in SC, Martha Evans' children had moved her to town. Meaning they probably once lived in a rural area. She last resided in Earle, Arkansas.

LYLES, Oliver P., attorney

Oliver Lyles was born ca 1828 in Tennessee and moved to
Arkansas in 1840s, probably. Do not know his parentage. He was an attorney at Mound City in the 1860s.

Oliver married Jane McClung 13 Aug 1848 in Crittenden County. By 1860 their eldest children were William, Charles and Mary.

Searching for descendants who would help us with the ancestry of Jane McClung and also to supply a listing of Oliver and Jane's children for the McClung Family Association.

Jane's mother appears to be the Margaret McClung b. 1796 in TN. She probably married to a McClung man in Alabama about 1818. These early McClung men had served from TN in the War of 1812.

Please write if you can provide ANY information about this family.

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
I'm hoping to get information as to where Mr. Gorman was born or living at the time. Jewel was my aunt and the trail goes cold after they were married. Any information is appreciated! Thanks!

James M. Hickman

Looking for the parents of James M. Hickman, a Lawyer from Earle Arkansas. In 1920 he lived in Earle, AR and was a General Practice Lawyer. He was, at one time, a member of the Leland Lodge #496 in Leland, Mississippi, when he petition for affiliation with the Crittenden Lodge on July 11, 1918 in Earle. He also wrote a book of poems called, "Songs from the Ozarks and other poems." The book was printed by The Mississippi Printing Co. in Vicksburg, MS, in 1921. His home was called Locust Cottage and he wrote a poem about it in his book. The first information I obtained about this man came from my Aunt Ruth Hickman Newton, when she recalled his visit to Butler County around the 1930's. She said, he met with Samuel Aaron Hickman Jr. (Papa Hickman) and the Hickman’s around Central Community. Sometime that day, he moved on down across Pigeon Creek to meet with John William Hickman (Uncle John) and was never heard from again. In 1998, I worked with Virginia Day McDonald of Georgia, who comes from our Hickman line in Upson County, GA and she wrote me saying, "I have a cousin who in 90 years old (clear mind) and she remembers him coming to Turner County, Georgia one time and she has a copy of his book." While in Central, he gave someone a copy of the book, and on the title page under his name someone has written 2nd cousin. The names Merle and Ruth Hickman are also written on that page. That would be the names of my Aunt Mattie Merle Hickman Searsy Thompson and Aunt Ida Ruth Hickman Newton. I have a picture of James M. Hickman, from the book.

I am searching for any trace of a Hightower family in Crittenden County around 1900. There would have been Robert J. (Jess) and Tressia May Hightower. They had 3 daughters, Patsy, listed as born in Arkansas 1898, Ruby Pearl, born in Nebraska 1900, and Roberta Jessie, born in Crittenden County in 1901. Tressia May's maiden name was Harrington. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I am looking for Laura A Randolph who was living in Crittenden County, Ark. and died sometime in (what we believe) 1926. She had several children and the youngest was my grandfather. I have been unable to locate any death records and hope that whoever has access to the 1924-1933 Eastern Arkansas Death Records would look. Thank you so much.

Death Lookup in Crittenden County

I am trying to find the death date of my GGGrandparents David & Belle Warren. They appear on the 1880 Crittenden County Arkansas census in Proctor township. They would have died sometime in the 1880's because their son appears on the 1890 Oklahoma census without them. Old family tales say that David was found dead on a raft on the Mississippi River in the early 1880's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Earny (or Earney, Earnie, etc.) Surname

I'm looking for information on Elsie Earny (sp?). Her mother is alleged to be Annie Risner who later married Jame E. Wilbourn, lived in Paragould in Grenne county finishing up her days in Crittenden Co. as the wife of John Perry. I don't know if she was married to Elsie's father, whoever he might have been. I've not yet found any marriage records for this surname. I received conflicting information my descendants of Annie, that Elsie lived in Memphis or died in Detroit. Any help or leads will be appreciated.
