PLEASE ;Can someone please help me? My great grandparents were married by Rev J.T. Jones in Alma in 1887. Does anyone now what church this gentleman was connected with, and whether it is still standing? We will be in the Alma area in August, and would love to see where our greatgrandparents were married, and perhaps get a picture of the church. Is there a historical society in the area? I would appreciate any help. Jan

Joe; My Greatgrandparents were Commodore Perry and Nancy Laurindo (Carter) Smith. Nancy's surname misspelled in the published record as Porter. They were married 22 May 1887 in Alma. Jan

Your marriage date is correct...I thought it might help to know who was married and when, but it didn't.

The J T Jones is probably the Joshua T Jones that is buried in Alma City Cemetery...he lived to be 104. His birthdate was in 1847 so that would make him the right age to perform the marriage of your grandparents.

Miss Clara B Eno wrote the following article in "History of Crawford County Arkansas" entitled "Church of Christ" and reads as follows:

A small group assembled and organized the Alma Church of Christ on October 13, 1877. George W Owen was the first pastor. The charter members were: A J Moody, elder; L B Byars and E H Hassett, deacons; James E Smith, Mrs Nannie Byars, Mrs Margaret Renfroe, Mrs Mary A Smith, Mrs Fannie E Byars, Mrs Nannie Reed, Mrs Mary Thurston, Mrs Lucy Wright.

The met in the old city hall, until in about 1890, a building was erected. The sam building, which has had an addition added, is still in use.

The Rev J T Jones, a Confederate Veteran, began preaching for this Congregation in Aprio, 1883. For more than 30 years he preached at the Alma Church. Rev Jones retired a number of years ago, but is still alive, and lives with a daughter in Tulsa. He is more than a hundred years old.

Miss Eno publised "History of Crawford County Arkansas" around 1950. She lived until August 2, 1951...she was 97.

There is still a Church of Christ located in Alma, however I doubt that is in the same building. You might stop by the Crawford County Historical Society which is located on the main street in Alma...they are open on Tuesday and Thursday. They could help you locate the Church and may be able to help you with the Church History.

Hope this helps.

Joe

Joe; Thank you VERY much for the information regarding Rev Jones. It is very helpful. We'll try to make it to Alma early enough on Tuesday to go to the historical society. Jan
