I am trying to do most of the families that lived around Philadelphia and the Burnt Bridge Road area. This includes Petersons, Grants, Dodsons, Maness', Wilkersons, Camps, Elmores, Bass, and all the rest. If you have or had kin in this area I would like to share info. This is a never ending chore, but it sure is fun.

My grandmother's maiden name was Mavity. She was born Oma Marie Mavity. Father was George or Henry Mavity and her mother was Susie Love Shackelford. These families lived in Columbia County, Arkansas in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My grandmother was born in 1910 and they were supposedly there then. My father was William Souter Plumlee and I was always told that Souter was a family name but I do not know how the Souters are related. I would like to check this out. Anyone with any ideas? I have very little information on this side of my family. Thanks!

Yesterday I posted Frankie Bonner m 16 Oct 1887 Richard Greene Grant. After an evening and morning of internet letters, I conclude there are 2 Frankie Bonners. The one who married R. G. Grant is apparently NOT the one who is the daughter of Joseph Frank Bonner d 1895 and Sophronia Mangum d 1919 , whose children are : Dora; Frances "Frankie"; Lorena m Will Martin and lived in Levelland, Texas; Emma m Wm. H. Britt; Mattie m James A. Slappy; and Joseph Howard Bonner m Charlie Slappy. The latter are my husband's grandparents. The Bonners and Mangums were from GA/AL but came here from Trinity and Polk Counties, TX. On 1880 Columbia Census; can't find in 1870.

On the 1870 Federal census there was a Frances M. Brady
and family living in Harrison township of Columbia county.
He was listed as being 28 years old and born in Arkansas.
His wife was Theresa - age 38. Children were Robert -14,
Mary -12, James -3 and William -2.
Probably the two older children were not actually Bradys,
but most likely step-children of Frances M.
Would love to hear from anyone that might have any
knowledge of this family. Was unable to locate them in
1880. Thanks

Reading the unpublished thesis of Glenn G. Martel , "Early Days of Columbia County", the following appeared on page 227 of the reprint I was reading:
"In 1860 the county had a total population of 12,449 of which 3.509 were slaves, 30% of these being mulattoes. There were 5 free colored people in the county at that time".... Can anyone tell me who those five people (or heads of household) were? Is there a known source that I may use to find the names of the free colored people of the county at that time?

Theodoris Russ Canada
Thecan23@aol.com

I'm researching the surnames Russ, Jacobs, McCullough, Stovall, Curry, Todd

His family left and moved and I think his Mother's new married name was Parker.
If anyone has any info on Raymond and how to contact him I would love the info. We were best friends as children and lost contact.
Sandy Dodson Tomlin

Need any information on the late Olden Berry from Waldo AR. Mr. Berry died February 17, 1995. I believe he was on staff of a local Gospel Radio Station - Haynesville/Magnolia Highway location - and later Springhill LA.

Any clues, names' of family members, neighbors, Church affiliation, Funeral Home that provided service - would be appreciated. I have nothing to start with - with the exception of a statement he made relative to possible kinship to Berrys from Louisiana.

Thanks,

Dougma

I am looking for my gggrandfather, Cader Madison G. Rogers, who lived in Columbia Cty around 1870-73. He was from SC originally, and was living in Arkansas in 1873 when his second son, Jesse Rogers was born. I am going on "hear-say" when I say that he lived in Columbia Cty.but that seems a good place to start. If anyone has an 1870 state census and could help me out on this search, I will certainly appreciate it. He often signed his name CMG Rogers. His wife was Susan Pierce, b.NC.

I am searching for information on the graves of Eliza Ann Browder and her 4 children. She and her husband, Martin Van Buren Browder, left Florida and headed to Texas about 1874. Allegedly, Eliza and 4 children died of swamp fever along the way. I can find no documentation, explaination nor reasoning as to why they were in Arkansas. Family lore says that Martin buried his wife and 4 children in a "common grave" and fenced it off with cypress wood. He then continued on to Texas with his young daughter Belle Matilda. No word as to weather or not he left any other defining information on the grave.

Thanks,

Vickie
MBrowder53190@aol.com
I am looking for any information about the relatives of my Great-Great-Great Grandparents Jacob (Jake) and Edna (Rose) Brown. They lived in the townships of Magnolia and Calhoun in Columbia, Arkansas. This is what I have so far:

Jacob (Jake) Brown was born about 1827 in Kentucky and Edna (Rose) Brown was born about 1844 in Georgia. The census reports for the years 1870-1910 show the following:

In 1870, they lived with their children (John and James Rayford) and Jacob's mother-in-law (Patsey Rose). The race of everyone was listed as "White" except for Patsey Rose listed as "Black"

In 1880, they lived with their children (John, Delia, Davie, Peggie, Henry, Samuel, and James Raford-stepson) and Jacob's mother-in-law (Patsey Hetower). The race of everyone was listed as "Black"

In 1900, they lived with their children (Sam, Joe, and Solomon) and mother-in-law (Patsey Rose). The race of everyone was listed as "Black"

On the 1910 census, a transcription error was made. Jake Brown was listed as John Norman, Edna Brown as Edna Norman, Samuel Brown as Samuel Norman and Thomas Brown-nephew as Thomas Norman. I did inform Ancestry.com about this error

I am researching an article for The Journal of East Tennessee History. In particular am looking for information concerning Confederate General John Porter McCown. He was born in Tennessee but died in Magnolia, Arkansas in 1879 and is buried there.
A portrait of him (attached file) hangs in the East Tennessee History Center and was the subject of an infra-red study because of the existence of a painting behind his portrait.
It is believed the portrait was painted post mortem from a photograph. Records indicate he left a photograph of himself to Mrs. Clara Davies and to Mrs. S.O. Couch.
If these photographs are still held by the families of these women, I would appreciate hearing from them.
Thank you.

Steve Dean
Photographers Harrington & Emerson

I have a photograph by the photographers Harrington & Emerson. They were photographers in Magnolia during the late 1800's. Someone has told me about Mr. Emerson. I was wondering if there was any information available on Mr. Harrington. Could he be related to Andrew J. Harrington of that town?
By the way, my cabinet-card photograph is one of my probable gr-gr-grandfather, Franklin W. Moss who died soon after it was taken ~1892.

Searching for any information on my gr-grandfather, Matthew Phillips. According to family history, born in Georgia, but not sure where. According to web-based geneology information, B. 1862, d. 1911 (death date is almost certainly correct - information presumably taken from Macedonia Cemetery, Columbia County, AR). Married Claudia Williamson, not sure when. Had 5 children, whose names I can provide if it will help.

I am trying to contact a classmate to notify her of a class reunion. She moved to Magnolia from Oklahoma about 1953 and entered college there. She is supposed to have married and moved away 1954-1956. Could someone in the area please help me locate her married name. Her maiden name was Bonnie Jean Stephens. She had several brothers but I do not know their names. Perhaps locate a marriage record. Thanks in advance.

Seeking information on Gilbert SMITH and his wife Catherine (HAMBRICK) SMITH who brought their family to this county after 1850. The federal land Gilbert bought is near Macedonia. Sometime during the Civil War Catherine died and Gilbert was said to have died a year later. I would like to narrow down the years of their death with the tax lists if any are available for 1860s. Probates? The children were: John H., Martha J., William "Bud", James Francis Marion "Frank", Margarite "Maggie" and Sarah Catherine. Mattie and Sally were in TX by 1870 but where were the rest in 1870? John and Frank were in Nevada Co., AR on 1880 census then moved to TX. Any help is appreciated.

As I was digging carefully through these things I came across several folded pieces of paper, along with old tax receipts.

On one of the folded pieces of paper it is handwritten in pencil and I believe it reads as follows, with my interpretation in ( ):
"Roy c Dodson borned January 29 1913
died June 8 at six oclock and thirty five minutes am 1916."
(Royce Dodson, born January 29, 1913 & died June 8, 1916 @ 6:35am) Nothing mentioned about the parents.

The surnames listed with the posting are the surnames that are found to have been listed in the book. Some births & deaths and even two "rites of matrimony" dates.

I keep hitting dead ends and it has become very frustrating.
Any help would be appreciated.

Old Scrapbook found in Al-Mabel Spradlin m Hubert Warrick

My husband is a writer for a local paper and this week was given an old scrapbook -?1920's-it has about 50 pictures, newpaper articles, postcards, letters, etc. The lady who gave it to him suggested he might want to write a story on it or if not, just throw it away. She had purchased an old trunk and it was in the trunk. My husband brought it home to me to figure out who it had belonged to, and after going through it with great care, I could never throw it away. This is who I think it belonged to:

Mabel Spradlin b Waldo Ark 1907. Her parents were Frank Spradlin b 1881 and Ila? Edwards? b 1881. Mabel m Hubert Monroe Warrick Nov. 25, 1929. He was b Decatur, Morgan Co. Al. in 1904. In one newspaper article, Mabel Spradlin from Waldo is listed as enrolled at Baptist Hospital School For Nurses. So many of the pictures seem to be of her family from Arkansas. Most the pictures have fallen off the pages and are loose, but on the inside of the front cover are taped pictures of her 3 brothers: Cecil L. Spradlin, Edward Spradlin, and Herbert F. Spradlin all 3 in WWII. There are letters that some of the brothers did not survive the War. Some newspaper articles places them as living in Decatur, Al after the War, and I have found a death date for Hubert Warrick on Nov 1972 Decatur, Morgan Co Al. I want to find a descendant of the Spradlin or Warrick Family and place this scrapbook in their hands.

JoAnne Thomas, Decatur, Al

I seem to recall a post (can't find it now) that indicated that there exists a purchasable CD with cemetery listings for Columbia County.

Can anyone tell me whether such a CD exists, and if so, where I can purchase it?

Thanks for any help. I am looking for older listings (pre 1900)

Dianne

Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
