Crittenden County Courthouse
100 Court Square
Marion, AR 72364
Phone: 870-739-3200

If you call the courthouse for a copy of the marriage certificate be sure to provide the Clerk with the exact date/names listed on the marriage record.

The folks on the Jasper County, Missouri message board have been helpful in my research. I had some ancestors, Smiths, Carters and Edwards, that had lived in the area during the early 1900's. Your mother may very well have been their barber, you never know. To my surprise I had discovered my 'long lost' great grandmother had moved there during her last years. I'm still searching for her parents, my gr-gr-grands.

If I locate anything in the search for Robert/Bob Jesse HIGHTOWER or James W. CLARK and their families I will post.

Again, best of luck in your search for the 'Lost fish in a sea of Clarks'.

I do not have that marriage license. Can you tell me how to get a copy? I have the information from 1910. in 1920 Tressia is again married to a Walter Pilcher and living in Kansas City, MO. This was her final marriage. I remember Walter when I was a child. My mother is not recorded in the household in 1920. She would have been 19 and out on her own, however she is back in 1930 with a new name and I am listed. I remember her stories of growing up in KC. and I think she went to Barber College there. She was a "Lady Barber" in the days when they were rare.
Again thank you for your help.
Richard

I do not know if any of this family of Clarks were in Arkansa, but I would not be supprised given that the path to Texas often ran through there. As to JR I do not know if he was junior or John Robert. My mother was Roberta Hightower, b 1901 in Crittendon Co. Ark. Her father Robert Jess Hightower is another of those missing links. He was supposed to have come from Tenn. Thanks for your intrest and help.
Richard

This unique/good message is currently posted in the Clark County, Arkansas message board. Were there any relatives of this family in Clark County, Arkansas at one time?

You are right about the "sea of Clarks" in east Texas. Was his brother, JR, as in 'junior' or J. R.? What was the first/maiden name, birth year/place of the wife of James W. Clark? Every clue helps in narrowing down the search of the Clark families of east Texas.

Wishing you the best in your research.

I am casting into the vast sea of Clarks for a fish with only a name and no lineage. My father was James W. Clark, born about 1895, I'm guessing about that based on a single picture I have of him shortly after I was born, in 1928. I have no parents or family names excepthe had a brother that went by "JR". He was born in East Texas. His family were farmers/ranchers there. He died about 1932 in an oil field accident, so I'm told. I know this is a long shot but it's all I have. My family names are; Clark, Harrington, Hightower and Hawman.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Arkadelphia had The Southern Standard and Siftings Herald and Gurdon had the Gurdon Times. Okolona would not have had a newspaper.
I would suggest that you contact the Archives in Arkadelphia and see if they would search for the obituary in the newspaper that is on film housed there.

Wanda

I recently discovered that Great-aunt Dona Ann Robinson, a spinster, was last seen alive in Okolona, Clark Co., in 1952. However, I can't find anyone who can tell me when or where she died. So I got to wondering: IF (and that's a big "if") she died in her home in Okolona or in a hospital nearby, it seems reasonable to me that there'd be an obituary notice in the local newspaper, i.e. in a newspaper being published in Okolona or the next biggest town.

So, here's my question: If I was to go looking for the needle in a haystack, how many haystacks would I have to search through? In other words, how many newspapers were being published in or very near to Okolona in the 1950's and 1960's?

Isaac Paul Osborne lived in Dobeyville near Gurdon in Clark County, Arkansas. He was born in North Carolina and came to Dobeyville and eventually Gurdon by way of Tennessee. He was a Presbyterian missionary who moved to Arkansas after the Civil War and his service in it. I believe he was a captain or colonel in the CSA and his uncle or father was a CSA General. Isaac Paul's father was Jonathan Osborne of North Carolina who is descended of Capt Thomas Osborne who settled Virginia. Isaac Paul's mother was Hannah Spinning who was descended of Lord Robert De Denne of Sussex England who settled the Sussex area in the early 11th century as a Norman conqueror with the first Norman king and was the head of the King's household and held estates in the area of the hill (or denne in the Norman language). Hannah Spinning was also of a family line from Connecticut who were the original settlers. Her grandfather going back the generations to the pre-Mayflower era in about 1600 in New England was the colonial governor who lead the colonists in King Phillips War.

Interesting story. I don't think this is the same line of Osborne as mine. Ours, to the best of my knowledge, was only spelled Osborne and they came from GA, TN, and SC. It has been spelled Osborne for the few hundred years we have gone back. Before Gurdon, we were in Dobeyville nearby. Dobeyville was a mill town that died. We were there a few years ago and the only building still standing is the Presbyterian Church my ggggransfather founded and preached in.

I have ancestors who spell their names Orsburn, Osborn, and Osborne all settling in Clark County on both sides of my family. The Orsburns that lived in Gurdon descended from Christopher and Catherine Furr Orsburn and they are kin to me on my dad's side of the family. My grandmother was a Furr. The other Osborn, Osborne, Orsburn that lived around Amity, Arkansas is descended from my Great, great grandparents which are Henry. He is buried in Friendship Cemetery at Amity in an unmarked grave.

I will be glad to share more info if you contact me at molene@swbell.net Molene Forbes

I am African American, researching SPENCE in Clark County, mainly because my GGF's sister was surnamed SPENCE. I suspect she was a slave of Dudley Spence, possibly my GGF as well, but his surname was GILLET(TE).

MY GGF and his sister were both born in Alabama, but came to Clark county while young, possibly as children or teens. GGF is quoted (in a newspaper article) as saying he was born in Talladega County, AL, but raised in Arkansas. Both married in Clark County in 1866.

Sorry-I must have missed your post! Here is more info on the Henton/Rush families we were discussing. It is quite lengthy:

Descendants of Rebecca Gossett

Generation No. 1

1. REBECCA2 GOSSETT (ABNER1) was born April 1821 in Alabama or South Carolina, and died Bet. 1900 - 1910 in Arkansas. She married H. C. HINTON November 30, 1849 in Cherokee County, Georgia. He was born 1824 in North Carolina.

Notes for REBECCA GOSSETT:
1850 Federal Census,Division 15, Cherokee, Georgia; Roll: M432_65; Page: 484; Image: 166. H. C. Hinton, 35?, Tanner, John 17, Sam'l, 11, Millie, 6, all from Alabama, but no Rebecca and missing some of the children. The age for John is correct, sort of (off by 2 yrs which can happen) but I don't know about the children. Sometimes kids are listed by middle names and nick names as well. Not sure this is the correct family. I think they were in Arkansas by this time or possibly Texas. Look at the 1880 census entry. Leta is 16, born in Texas.

1880 Federal Census Clark County, Amity Township, Arkansas, p. 13, Rebecca Hinton, 59, Widowed, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia, living with her children Henry W., 32, farmer, GA, John W., 25, Ala., Leta, 16, Texas.

1900 Federal Census Clark County, Amity Township, Arkansas, age 79, born April 1821, widowed, 3 of 9 children living, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia. Their children all born in Arkansas, ages as listed.

Name is also seen spelled Gasses, Gossett, Gossith.

Marriage Notes for REBECCA GOSSETT and H. HINTON:
Marriage record in Ancestry.com database lists an H. C. Hinton and Rebecca Gosess, marriage date 30 November 1849. Still need to send for actual record.

Groom: HINTON, H. C. Bride: GOSESS, Rebecca Date: Nov 3, 1849 Book: B Page: 32

When I wrote for the marriage record I was told it was not on file. Here is what I found on the Cherokee County web site regarding county boundaries-"Later, portions of Cherokee County were used to create Pickens County (1853) and Milton County (1857). Between 1847 and 1869 -- but especially during the 1850s -- the General Assembly transferred land from Cherokee County to neighboring Cass (Bartow), Cobb, Forsyth, and Pickens counties." It may be that the marriage is on file in one of these counties. More research is needed.

Children of REBECCA GOSSETT and H. HINTON are:
i.	HENRY W.3 HINTON, b. 1848.
ii. The Tapp's Funeral Home Record # 2428 stated that a J.W. Hinton died 9 July 1932 and was buried in Shook's Chapel Cemetery. Cemetery lookup provided by Ovelle Bennett Cagle, Hopkins County Genealogical Society.

Some of my information on birth, death and marriage dates came from what appears to be the transcribed entries from a family bible which was provided to me by my aunt Velma (Henton) Bradley Ames. It was typed by her sister, Mary (Henton) Tavel.

More About JOHN WINSTON HINTON:
Burial: Shook's Chapel Cemetery, Sulphur Springs, Hopkins, TX

Notes for ZILPHIA EUGENIA THOMPSON:
1860 Federal Census, Harris County, Whitesville P. It was typed by her sister, Mary (Henton) Tavel. Zilphia died December 17, 1927. It is unknown if she died in Texas or another place. John was still in Texas and died there in 1932, so the assumption is that Zilphia is there somewhere as well. I have contacted both the Texas and Arkansas Dept. of Health and inquired about her death and both states have said they have no information on her death. I have also checked in the counties of Nacogdoches and Hopkins and both have no record of her death. The cemetery where John is buried has no record of her being interred there. I have sent a letter to the Justice of the Peace/Coroner of Sulphur Springs, TX to see if they have a record of her death in the town. 6/2007.

More About ZILPHIA EUGENIA THOMPSON:
Burial: unknown-possibly Texas

Marriage Notes for JOHN HINTON and ZILPHIA THOMPSON:
Marriage date information came from what appears to be the transcribed entries from a family bible which was provided to me by my aunt Velma (Henton) Bradley Ames.
I live in California and have never been in Arkansas. The little bit that I know about ancestors and family who lived in Clark Co. Arkansas came from a family bible and from census records which I have access to through my annual subscription to www.ancestry.com.

Take my word for it, you need to come for a visit.
The world is totally different back here.
There are lots of good people and while few of those claim to be rich, most like a very comfortable life style.
There are two colleges, Ouachita and Henderson who offer some exceptional educational opportunities.
Lake DeGray is one of the most beautiful you could imagine and
lots of folks go to enjoy themselves there.

We just returned from Graysonia yesterday. My father (Ira Ray Roberts) was raised in that area. His grandmother Nando (Eliza Hernando Roberts) was the mail carrier for Graysonia. She drove a buggy with a blind horse for many years and delivered mail. They had a farmhouse in Graysonia. Graysonia no longer exists. We took my 86 year old father there to see the home (which is nothing but a foundation) and unfortunately, the rains and floods made us turn back. It is close to Delight. We stopped to visit relatives in Delight and they took us to the only road that leads to Graysonia - all others have been gated off. Bobo road took us in for miles and miles. The rain was pouring and water rushing and the stone roads were covered with water. We made it to the outskirts of Graysonia, were able to stop at a graveyard and take pictures of relative's headstones, but had to turn back before we could get to the home. We barely made it out in time. We had a small car and the water was up to the bottom of it and continuing to rise. Not a place where you want to get lost or stuck. Beautiful land, tons of trees and deers, a house or two maybe every 7 miles but not sure if anyone lived in them. We probably saw 5 houses total and lots of deer huts but they were empty. Very isolated and a little frightening. We ended up leaving the area by taking Alpine road which of course brought us out in Alpine. Hope that helps.

Ms. Karnes, I see where you have a book with cemeteries for Clark Co., AR. My husband and I just tried to find my great grandfather's grave, (after driving in from Arizona), and to no avail. It is reported that he died Sep 1900 and is buried in the Wilson Cemetery. We are not sure if we even found the right cemetery, as it was unmarked but was on Hwy 51 at the top of a knoll and although it was very small; was overgrown and huge tree braches had fallen across plots. I am assuming it was the Wilson Cemetery as there were a few Wilsons buried there along with Nichols and McFadden. My great grandfather's nae was Millard Franklin Pierce, b. 1855 and died 1900. It is reported that he was buried next to his first wife, Elizabeth E.. Please understand that I appreciate any energy, effort and assistance you are able to provide me and understand that if you dod not find anything, I will totally understand. Thank you so much for your kindness,
Sandy (Pierce) Parks
