The story is very sad, and includes a list of the victims' names and ages. Might be helpful to someone tracing lost ancestors.

John Carr/Danie S. Hayter land bounty warrant 1857

Hi!

I have received land bounty warrant papers for my 4th gr grandfather John Carr. He received a land bounty for service in the Cherokee Removal, serving from Jackson County, AL.

John Carr sold the land bounty in August, 1857 to Daniel S. Hayter. The location of the land Hayter took is as follows:

East half of SW quarter & SW quarter of the SE quarter of Sec. 21, Township 20 N of Range 24 W.

The actual document transferring the warrant from John Carr to Daniel S. Hayter contains the signature of Jefferson Davis. The date on this document is 29 August, 1857. At that time, THE Jefferson Davis was back in the US Senate. So who was the man who signed the documnt?

John Carr was actually in Carroll County from at least Feb., 1853, to at least September, 1857. If anyone knows what he might have been doing there, I'd be interested!

Robert Schneider
I will be in Carroll Co the week of Thanksgiving...I would like to see the area where John Ramsey had his farm. He was married to Rachel Sneed and supposedly they are buried on this homestead. I would like to take photos of the area if possible. Thanks, Suzanne

Hello,
I have a GGG Uncle that moved to Eureka Springs from Kentucky. James Clayton McQuerry was a Minister of the Gospel there for a short time before coming back to KY. While he was there he applied for Arkansas Confederate Pension and died four years later in KY. I know he was in Eureka Springs in the year 1927 thru 1930. 1927 is the date he applied for C/W Pension for his wife Tecora. His two sons are buried there; John McQuerry and Wesley McQuerry. A third son I have not located names George W. McQuerry.
I found J.C. in the Green Forrest Tribune titled Carroll County Arkansas United Confederate Veterans Extrations from Green Forrest Tribune.
I hope to locate our family there from Wesley's or John's family, or where they may have gone from there. I have letters from their father addressed to home at KY. River mentioning them in school.
If these names sre familiar contact me in KY. at ronniem859@aol.com

Looking for information on E.A. Jackson who lived in Prarie Township, Carroll County,Arkansas with his wife, Clarinda, and son, Jasper Newton according to the 1870 and 1880 census. On one of the census records, E.A.'s given name was listed as Easaim. We know he was married to Lottie Bishop at one time because she is the mother of Jasper Newton who is my g-grandfather. Her name is on his death record. We know there was a daughter named Minerva but don't have any further information her. The family moved to Erath Co, Texas sometime between the 1880 census and 1900 census.
We are trying to find out more about Lottie... where she was from and what happened to her. If you have any information, please email me at jaylou0217@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Researching John Carr in Carroll

Hi!

I'm fairly new to Carroll County, though I've posted here a few times.

I just received the land bounty papers for my 4th gr grandfather John Carr. He had served in the Cherokee Removal (1837), Gover's Company, Norwood's Battalion from Jackson County, AL. The papers indicate that he made his first application for land while living in Carroll County, dated Feb., 1853. He did receive 40 acres on that first application. In 1855, he made an additional application for 120 acres. I don't know whether the second application was successful.

Interesting fact is that the rest of the Carr family, along with related families named Taylor and Edwards, settled in Stone County. This includes wife Nancy Carr, son Elihu Carr and daughter Bethany Carr. John Carr himself can be found back in Stonefort, Saline County, IL in the 1860 census along with his daughter Nancy Carr Spence. Son George W. Carr was living with wife Mary Ellen Warren in neighboring Pope County, IL.

I would like to start researching in Carroll. As I checked the LDS site for microfilm sources, I was disappointed to find limited sources for land records and probate records. Do any of you experts out there have any suggestions for me? I'm open to anything except travel. I live in MO quite aways off from Carroll County.
Thanks!

Robert Schneider

Her Husband, David Standlee had a sister who married Isaac Boren, son of William and Mary _________ Boren.

Catherine also has children named after this family as well...her oldest son Levi...also a son of William and Mary _____________ Boren...and a daughter Mary Ann who was prob. named after her mother? All of this boren family was born in TN and have birthdates very close to hers.

Can anyone tell me or give me counties where I can find William Boren on the census perhaps in 1810, 1820 and 1830 to see if he had a daughter that falls into that age group?

OR even better yet...can anyone produce a will of William Boren's?

This search has been going on toooooooooooooooo long to identify Catherine's parentage and I look forward to hearing from any of you who can direct me where to look census-wise...

Jamie Gibbons
jacwgg@aol.com

Could someone check a Dec 1984 Green Forest, Carroll, AR obit for May Foster, please? Thank you veru much.

I am trying to determine if this May Foster is May Sutherland Foster and will gladly pay for a copy of the obit:

MAY FOSTER 31 May 1898 - Dec 1984 Green Forest, Carroll, AR

She was last found in the 1910 Scott Co., MO census:

1910 - Scott County, MO (MORLEY TWP) Page: 132A
~ Southerland (SUTHERLAND)~
- Tilson, IN head
- Elizabeth F. (nee STAMM,) KY wife
- John W. 18, MO son
- Roy 14, MO son
- May H. 11 (abt 1898/99) MO, daughter

Older siblings not in the above census were Ella and Charles.
Older half-siblings were:
1.Minnie
2.Edgar
3.Elizabeth
4.Benjamin Franklin
5.Mattie
6.August

Of these siblings, some died in Stone Co., MO, Baxter Co., AR, and Marion Co., AR so this Carroll Co, AR SSDI listing for a May Foster b. 1898 could very likely be the right listing.

In one of her siblings (Charles) 1971 Indiana obit, she is listed as Mrs. Mae Foster of Cotter, AR (The SSDI date is 1984, not before 1971, which is also workable).

Since she was last found in Scott Co, MO in 1910, I checked the 1920 Scott Co, MO census and located the below record.

This may or may NOT be her, however. It's a close match, but this May's birth year slightly differs (1898 vs. 1893) and her father's birthplace is incorrect.

1920 Kelso, Scott, Missouri
Eli Foster abt 1887 Illinois White RR
May Foster abt 1893 Missouri Father-MO; Mother-KY
Harry Foster abt 1911 Missouri
May Foster abt 1913 Missouri
Mamie Foster abt 1916 Missouri

Thank you very much for any information that can be found!
-Kay, FL
MehdiFakhar@aol.com

Does anyone know how to contact the person who maintains the burial records for High Cemetery? I'm looking for the grave of Agnes Elizabeth EDWARDS who, according to her death certificate, was buried there on 16 May 1910. However, she is not listed in the cemetery index. Her second husband, Jno STEWART is also buried there.
Thanks.
Connie in Florida

I located on findagrave.com a grave stone for a Hubert Pease in the Walden Cemetery. He was born Jan 4, 1914 and died Mar 27, 2000. Does anyone know anything about this Hubert Pease. Is there a obit in the local newspaper? Are there any Pease family in that area?

I have an Uncle Hubert Pease, that died March 27, 2000. However, he did not live or die in Arkansas. His ashes where given to his wife's nephew and we have not been able to locate him, to know what happen to my uncle's ashes.

When I ran across this photo of the tombstone I just wondered if by chance it could be my Uncle.

Could anyone help me with this search for Hubert Pease.
Thank you,
Susan

His name was Alexander Hamilton Wilson and his wife was Rebecca Seitz. They are both buried in the Gobbler Cemetary in Rudd Arkansas.

I know that the cabin is located at a place called "Lake Return" from information that my mother and I found in my Grandmother Ruby Hammons Avant left behind. It may be near Berryville or Rudd from what we can tell.

I would apreciate any information that can be provided as to its location.

GARRETT - Crawford - Conway - Carroll Co, Ark 1850-1890+

From Charlotte's Pearls:
Jefferson Democrat newspaper
Hillsboro, Jefferson county, Missouri
WEDNESDAY, 4 NOVEMBER 1885

SEARCH CROWNED WITH SUCCESS - How an Arkansas Rebel Soldier Lost and Found His Children.
- At the beginning of the war a man named GARRETT enlisted as a soldier and served most of the time under Gen PRICE. He left his children, his wife being dead, near Van Buren, in Crawford county, Arkansas, in 1862.
Shortly after the war closed he went to the West Indies, where he was made a prisoner on charge of treasonable intentions against the government, and was kept in confinement until recently. On being liberated he returned to the United States and determined on an effort to find his children. He went to Crawford county, but nobody there knew anything of them. He heard there that a family of his name lived in Independence County, and accordingly he went there. He spent one night with the family of a Mr. Smith GARRET, but they could trace out no connecting link. While in that county he learned that there was a family of GARRETs in Conway county, and left for that county the next day. On reaching Morrilton, Conway County, Mr. GARRETT learned that one of his sons was a farmer living ten miles in the country, and on repairing to the designated place found one of long-searched for children with a family growing up around him.
One of his daughters died in Crawford county a number of years ago, as did also a son, John by name. But two of his sons and three daughters are still living - a son and daughter in Conway county. His other son resides in Carrol County, and the two remaining daughters have married and are living in Missouri.
I am looking for the family of a James N. (Napoleon) Jones born in Tennessee in ab 1836. I have found a Jones family in Tennesse with a James N. age 14 (1850 census) I found the same family in Carroll County in 1860. The father must have died between 1850 and 1860. James N. would have been 24 and he was not in home. I can't find him in the 1860 or 1870 census. In the 1870 census I found some of the children of this same family living together in Eureka Springs area. I guess the mother died sometime between 1860 and 1870. I am not sure if this is the right family of James N. Jones, but both the mother and father were born where James N. stated his parents were born (info from 1880 Johnson County census) According to family stories, James N. was in Washington County with a wife, two small sons and a baby daughter. The wife dropped the baby girl out of a wagon and she died. He left this family going to Yell Co.,where he married a Kate Austin in 1873. They lived in Johnson Co. and then Pope Co. He was shot and killed in 1891. Another family story was while he was away in the Civil War (Hill's Cavalry) his mother was tortured by either two Union Soldiers or two bushwackers to get her to tell where money or supplies were hidden. When he returned from the war, he hunted the men, finding one, and killing him. I would like information on the family he left in Washington County and his parents and brothers and sister.

Jonathan Sims and his wife, Maretta Prewitt Sims, moved to Carroll County, Arkansas in the 1880's from Greenville County, SC. He was the son of Daniel Sims and Esther A. Ward Sims. Per the 1880 census in SC, they had one daughter born in 1879, first name unknown. I don't know if they had other children. Jonathan and Maretta Sims were buried in Alpena Cemetery in 1933. If anyone is researching this line, please get in touch. Thanks.

Belle Wilson 19 married Cleveland Sanders 21 in Carroll County Arkansas 1/14/1907. In 1910 they are in Tulsa and her father Jim Wilson is living with them. In 1914 their infant son - Melvin Leroy Sanders was buried in Beaver Cemetery. Laura Belle Sanders is buried next to him. In 1918 Cleveland filled out a military registration card. His next of kin is Gladys (a daughter) so Belle is most likely dead.
So I wonder if the Laura Belle Sanders in Beaver Cemetery is Belle Wilson Sanders?
On the 1900 census in Cedar, Carroll, AR one finds Charley Sanders (Cleveland's older brother) living next door to James and Mary Wilson and their children. In 1910 Belle said that she was born in AR and her father was born in TN, her mother born in MO. James and Mary fit that.
One of James and Mary Wilson's daughters is transcibed as Tawi B., but it looks like Lauri B. to me. This is all good, BUT Tawi-Lauri is too old. She is 19 in 1900. In 1907 when the wedding takes place she would be 26.
I never know how much allowance to make for mistakes on censuses.
What do YOU think?
Thanks

Rosehill School

I am looking for someone who can tell me whether Rosehill (possibly Rose Hill) school house still exists. This was supposed to be about 2 miles or so from "Dripping Springs" near Metalton. Since I'm not sure whether the exact location would be in Carroll or Madison counties, I am staring with the Carroll county board to see where that leads. I have aunts that went to this school back in the '50s. From there, they went on to school at Marble. Does that school still exist? I would like to take modern pictures of these if they are still in existence, no matter how delapadated the buildings may be. If you have any info, please contact me. Thank you.

William Dill pygmybilly@yahoo.com

Horn/Carr families

Hi!

I'm interested in the Jacob Horn Rutha Rebecca Lawson Carr Horn. It turns out that Rutha R. Horn was the widow of an uncle of mine named Elihu Carr. Elihu died in 1881. Rutha remarried Jacob Horn, b. 1830 TN, in 1882. They can be found in the 1900 Carroll County, AR census.

I would very much like to know if any descendants of this couple are out there. My interest is whether any info about the Carrs has been passed down. I would very much like to know about Elihu's father John Carr, particularly his county of birth in South Carolina. Also, Elihu's mother Nancy Taylor Carr moved herself and two children from the family home to Stone County in the early 1850s. I'm hoping someday I can get the explanation for this.

My family page url is below:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Robert-L-Sc...

Thanks!

Robert Schneider
Berkeley MO 63134
