Would like information on J.W. Johnson that is listed in the 1860 Arkansas Census, who lived in the Polk Township.
I would like to know who lived in the household, ages, birthplaces, etc.

I'm researching for family line of Jonathan W. (b.1819-S.C.) and Sarah Alice (b.1831-Tenn) Johnson. They traveled around due to children being born in Illinois and Arkansas before they settled in East Texas- Rains Co. in Pilgrims Rest Community in 1876.

I would like to know if this is the same family or any connections.

Your time and information would be appreciated.

Sherrie Stout

This is a newpaper photo of the Hampton School, which was located where the Hampton High School is now. It was the first brick building in Hampton and was torn down in 1949. The newspaper is not dated, but there's a reference to a Bicentennial event on the back, so we are guessing mid-1970s.

I have a copy of the 1860 Calhoun County census that list Jeremiah Hollie(sort of looks like Hollis) married to Sarah and were both born in Tennessee. They are both listed as 52 years of age and there are several children listed:
Elizabeth, Allen, John, Henry, William, James and then there is a Leonard Bridges, Allen, Mary and Margaret. I can't seem to find anything beyond this document. I am a Hollie from Louisiana and have traced them back this far and would like to know more about Elizabeth, Allen, John, William and James. I'm unsure who the Bridges are or why they are listed but I have Henry's information because this is my direct lineage. Any info would be appreciated, my personal email is lineage_84@yahoo.com.

I am searching for information on the graves of Eliza Ann Browder and her 4 children. She and her husband, Martin Van Buren Browder, left Florida and headed to Texas about 1874. Allegedly, Eliza and 4 children died of swamp fever along the way. I can find no documentation, explaination nor reasoning as to why they were in Arkansas. Family lore says that Martin buried his wife and 4 children in a "common grave" and fenced it off with cypress wood. He then continued on to Texas with his young daughter Belle Matilda. No word as to weather or not he left any other defining information on the grave.

Thanks,

Vickie
MBrowder53190@aol.com
Her parents were Andrew Johnson and Elizabeth Barnhart. His parents were William Doherty and Tennessee Quarles.

Capt. John Carr, claim of widow for Bounty Land

Hi!

I'm in possession of the "Claim of Widow for Bounty Land" of the widow of Capt. John Carr. The application was made from Clark County, AR by Sarah Ann Stewart(d) Carr. The connection with Calhoun is that John Carr married his second wife in Calhoun.

Capt. John Carr served in the 2nd Seminole War as part of the Alabama Cavalry about 1840-1842. Capt. John Carr was born about 1806 in Oglethorpe County, GA. He is described as having been 5'11", high fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He married Sarah Ann Steward in Calhoun County, AR on January 11, 1852. His first wife was Martha Shackelford. He married Martha in Montgomery County, AL about 1828. Martha died in Ouachita County, AR about 1845. John Carr himself died in Clark County, AR on Dec. 8, 1875.

The interesting part of this application is that there is a note stating that it was consolidated with #92937. That is the number of the land bounty application for my 4th gr grandfather John Carr of Jackson County, AL and later of Carroll County, AR. So the widow's application came to me as part of the land bounty application of my 4th gr grandfather John Carr. To the best of my knowledge, there is no blood relation between Capt. John Carr and my 4th gr grandfather.

If anyone out there is related to Capt. John Carr, I'd be glad to correspond.

Robert Schneider

I am looking for William L. Harmon b. abt 1881 Lafayette County, MS

He is the son of Lee S Harmon aka Levi Smith Harmon Jr and Kate Barry (or Berry) who settled in Bradley and Calhoun Co. Arkansas between 1885 and 1900 from Lafayette County, MS. Lee was a newspaper editor and printer

In the 1900 Warren, AR census his name is written in but crossed out and his two sisters are listed. According to the census the family had three children. William's sisters were Lena K and Mary Myrna. Mary Myrna married a Witherington and I have contacted her descendants. None of them were aware of a brother but they did not really know anything about Lee or Kate's origins or that Lee was really Levi.

Either William died prior to the 1900 census or had possibly already moved out on his own at approx 19 YOA.

All help is appreciated
Mary E. Tidwell m. David Harcrow, 1866, in Calhoun Co., AR

I’m seeking information on the Mary E. Tidwell, 24, who married David Harcrow, 60, in Calhoun Co., AR, on 9 Dec 1866. (This David Harcrow is probably the same as the David Harcrow born ca 1806 in Elbert Co., GA and married 1st to Joice/Joicy Powell.)

Believe David died before 1870 census, as Mary Harcrow, 27, is found in Fayette Township, Calhoun Co., with sons, James -9 (probably son from 1st marriage) and William-3 (assumed son of David).

I would like to know who Mary’s 1st husband was (if there was one); what happened to her children; and who her parents were also.

I am not related to these folks, but I’m trying to trace the Mary Elizabeth Harcrow that married my 3rd great-grandfather, Hartwell M. Lucas on 30 Nov 1872 in Calhoun Co., AR, as his 2nd wife (I am descended from his 1st wife, Josephine Russell).

She was listed as “Elizabeth Harcrow, daughter of Harris Harcrow” in the H.M. Lucas profile in the Goodspeed’s Biographical Histories of Southern Arkansas, published ca 1890. I have found no mention of a “Harris” Harcrow in the census records or in family trees on the Internet. It’s possible that this information was wrong and Mary E. Harcrow was the “widow Harcrow.”

Thanks to anyone who can assist me with this mystery.

Vickie Rushton Bickle
I am looking for any information about the parents and siblings of my Great-Grandfather, Printies Easter. On various records, his first name is shown as: Prenties, Prentiss, and Prentice. He served in the Army during WWI from 1918-1919. In 1920, he was married to Ophelia (Brown) Easter of Columbia, AR. In 1930, they had four children (Nathaniel, Zettie, Mary, Scipio). After 1930, they moved to St. Louis, MO where he died in 1981.
I am looking for any information about the relatives of my Great-Great-Great Grandparents Jacob (Jake) and Edna (Rose) Brown. They lived in the townships of Magnolia and Calhoun in Columbia, Arkansas. This is what I have so far:

Jacob (Jake) Brown was born about 1827 in Kentucky and Edna (Rose) Brown was born about 1844 in Georgia. The census reports for the years 1870-1910 show the following:

In 1870, they lived with their children (John and James Rayford) and Jacob's mother-in-law (Patsey Rose). The race of everyone was listed as "White" except for Patsey Rose listed as "Black"

In 1880, they lived with their children (John, Delia, Davie, Peggie, Henry, Samuel, and James Raford-stepson) and Jacob's mother-in-law (Patsey Hetower). The race of everyone was listed as "Black"

In 1900, they lived with their children (Sam, Joe, and Solomon) and mother-in-law (Patsey Rose). The race of everyone was listed as "Black"

On the 1910 census, I believe a transcription error was made. Jake Brown was listed as John Norman, Edna Brown as Edna Norman, Samuel Brown as Samuel Norman and Thomas Brown-nephew as Thomas Norman. I did inform Ancestry.com about this error.

Sophia C. Paulman

I don't thing Sophia Paulman was full blooded Cheroke. Daddy was fron Germany and her mother was from Richmond VA. I do know that is Cheroke blooded in that family.
This is what I have on Sophia Paulman it came from the book of The Paulman Family of Arkansas. I have a copy of the Book.

They had Sophia while they strill lived in South Carolina. They moved to West, moving first to Springs Place, Georgia, where Henry worked at a lumber mill. Later they lived in Atlanta briefly and here Thirsa Amada was born.

They soon moved further west, traveled by boat to New Orleans, La. From New Orleans they traveled by boat up to the Mississippi and Ouachita River to Moro Bay, Arkansas.

From here they went overland to Lanark, Bradley, Calhoun, Akansas. Here they made their home with (Ann) Lydia's Uncle and Aunt Samuel and Rebecca Carter. Henry's father had come with them to Lanark. Later he moved to Camden where he re-married and later moved to Texas and on to California. He was not heard from after that.

Samuel and Henry traveled about in what is now Bradley, Calhoun, and Ouachita Counties looking for a place for Henry (Ann) Lydia to settle. They chose for their home a farm site close to the present twon of Bearden Arkansas. The community was as Salem. Here they settled and became successful farmers, raising wheat, cattle and hogs.

Here eight more children were borm to them. They were Emma, William, Lizzie, Mary, Sarah, Rebecca, Lydia Jane, Samuel.

When the Civil War came in 1860, Henry stayed out of military service as long as he could. This was beacuse of his steadfast pacifist belief and also beacuse he had nine chlidren to take care of. Recruiting pressure was brought to bear on Henry and other neighbors in the community, and he went to Camden where he enlisted on March 26, 1863. He became a private in the 3rd Regiment Arkansas Infantry. He wrote (Ann) Lydia four letters after he left to go to war. The First was written from Camden on March 26, 1863. ( I have coy of the letter's)

In addition to being wounded, Henry beacame ill with typhoid fever and died on Sept. 1 1863. He and many hundreds are buried in mass grave in Salem, New Jersey. The cemetery is called Finn's Point National Cemetery.

Henry's beloved (Ann) Lydia did not hear from Henry while he was at Fort Delware. In fact, when Ann died on July 18, 1908, she did not know what happened to Henry. She only knew he went away to war and never returned. In the Paulman Bible she wrote that he died in "the war".

Henry wrote prophetically in his second and last letters "till death--farwell." And so it was!

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!
HELP, HELP, HELP!
Thanks,
Jana Rooke
Pine Bluff October 21, 1930

VISITS PINE BLUFF FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE YEAR 1868

Mrs. M.E. Bass, mother of I.J. Bass, well known cotton gin operator of Bearden, is visiting in Pine Bluff today for the first time since she came here in 1868 from Memphis on a steamboat.
Sixty-two years ago she and her younger sister, Rhoda, who is now Mrs. Strickland, landed with their parents, from the boat on the Arkansas River at what is now the foot of Texas street. Though she was but nine years old then, Mrs. Bass remembers clearly the bitter cold of that winter and the hardships of the two day trip here on down to Chambersville, Calhoun county, in a wagon. (The trip here this morning in an automobile required two hours.) The trip from Memphis down the Mississippi and back up the Arkansas to Pine Bluff required a weeks time.
Mrs. Bass lives with her son at Bearden and Mrs. Strickland lives in Thornton.
I am looking for information on the stagecoach route between Luna Landing in Chicot Co., AR to Hampton AR . Also What line would it be. My gggrandfather Samuel Alvin Rial (1837-1891) was a driver on that line. I believe it passed through or near Monticello AR. It was there at an overnight stop that he met and later married (1861) Mary Catherine Larkin (1841-1897)

My great grandfather Alexander Gordon was living in Calhoun county during Reconstruction after the Civil War. Some carpetbaggers came up to his house and tried to rob him. When he wouldn't tell them where his money was, they shot him. He survived the wound though. Does anyone know about this or where to look for information on this? I would appreciate it.

Barker family

I'm looking for additional information on the Barkers of southern Arkansas. The 1880 census for Calhoun County shows my g-grandmother, Bendette Camille Barker, living with her parents James and "Tallin" Barker, as well a brother and sister (Ed and 'Loudie'). I know she had at least two other brothers, Earl Hicks Barker and Gus Barker. I believe they lived in the El Dorado area, while a sister later lived near New Orleans.

Question: Is the "Tallin" Barker mentioned as James' wife Pauline Ryan? My grandfather mentioned Pauline as
Bendette's mother, but this is the first I've heard of this name/nickname. Also, James listed Georgia as his father's birthplace, but I've come up short on finding where in Georgia he may have come from. Thanks in advance for any help...

I have been searching for a concrete connection to Charlie's family, so far all I have is family hearsay. He was born 1880, one month after the census taker came through. He died 1925 of typhoid fever. By 1900, I cannot find him but speculate he is in a lumber camp nearby. 1910, he is married with small children. His death certificate was no help, his son (my grandfather) did not know any information to connect his father to his parents. The 1910 and 1920 census shows that Charlie did not know where his parents were born. I have figured out through various evidence that his mother died about 1895, then his father left his family to marry a woman from Louisiana. Have yet to find Charlie with siblings or some kind of guardian. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Researching this for about 10 years.
Kathy Hendon

Does anyone have any information on the Cobb family buried in New Hope Cemetery, Calhoun County, Arkansas? John William b. 22 NOV 1851 d.21 JUN 1925. He was the father of Ira William (I.W) Cobb b.16 JUN 1878 d.21 JUN 1920. Ira William was married to Maggie (Margaret Fletcher). Tombstone reads Maggie F. Cobb b. 1882 d.1933. They were the parents of Herchel P. Cobb (pvt. 414 Infantry/killed in Germany) and Ira Cobb, my grandfather who died in New Mexico. Please help as this is all I know of them. Thank you, Brenda
Medley family of Locust Bayou (Calhoun) Arkansas

One of the books in my possession is called Ray's New Higher Arithmetic, dated 1880. On the endpapers are some names written in a childish handwriting, leading me to believe that this was a schoolbook. There is also a rubber stamp that reads "J.H. Medley, Locust Bayou, Calhoun Co., Arkansas". Other Medley names inscribed are Willie, Gertrude, and Mary. Also the names Michael James of Hampton, and Harry Smith. This book has little value except for the family signatures. It looks like some children were practicing their handwriting skills in the 1880s. We would be happy to send this book to someone in the Medley family for the cost of postage, about $3 ... we can send digital photos of the item to anyone who requests them by e-mail. We would like to see this old book returned to the family of the young scholars who pencilled their names into their schoolbook.

I'm looking for information on a family listed on the 1860 census in Calhoun County. Nancy Drummons is listed as head of household, age 51, born in South Carolina. Others in her household include John Drummons, age 24, and Mary, age 25. I believe that these individuals may related to my g-grandmother.

Thanks,
Terry

Calhoun Family- Miss. Mo. and Ark.

I am searching for any family descendants of the following family. D.C.Calhoun (Dunklin) born about 1820 in Miss., his wife- Penelope- born abt. 1832 - Tenn., and they had the following children: Sarah Elizabeth-born-1854-Tenn., N.M. (female) born-1857-Ark., J. M. (James) born-abt. 1859-Ark., Martha-born- abt.1863-Mo., Mary-born abt. 1864-Mo., and another female by the name of JSA or Lou-born abt. 1869-Mo. They were living in Washington County, Mo. in the 1870 Census Records. I know that the first daughter Sarah Elizabeth Calhoun married a Thomas Dowdy- (who was killed by gun), then to an Issace Winkles- (I think), and last to a Fredrick Ermert. Sarah was married to all in Ripley Co. Mo. With all these children, surely there is some family out there somewhere. If any of the Calhoun's have any info. regardless of how small, please contacat me directly at Gmboyz3@aol.com This is my family. Thanks in advance. Martha
