Clanton Family Newsletter and questions

Somewhere here I saw a person asking who was now in charge of the Clanton Family newsletter.
Joan Viney has told me that she is now the one writing it after giving me information on Edward Clanton's father's name, Thomas William Clanton and his wife Johanna I believe.

My family comes in with Edward's daughter Margaret Clanton who married Zephanias Barfield of Bradley County, Arkansas.

After the family reunion in 1936 in Arkansas, there seems to be no interaction of Clanton's and Barfield's, seemingly serving any ties to the family.
The last of my family that is mentioned in the 1936 Eagle Democratic is Mrs. D.G. Barfield, my great grandmother.

There are two questions I do have.
Does anyone know of Mary J Chandler who would have been one year old in 1936? Is she still alive, and is there any way of getting hold of her?
Are there any relatives or descendants of Maggie's nieces or nephews of her brothers and sisters children?
I saw a Jesse Clanton mentioned here as a brother, does he or anyone else have living relatives?

My grandmother, Mr & Mrs. D.G. Barfield's daughter has heard stories of her great grandfather's family, and for years has told me what she's knows of the family line.
I hope to fill in the blanks and get to know even more of my family out of both interest and curiosity.

Anyone with questions of the Barfield family I may have answers for, or something that could help you.

And if anyone can tell me anything about how Thomas William Clanton connects to John and Marmaduke Clanton of Virginia I would greatly apprciate it.

Thank you.

need help locating SOURCES for marriages, buriials, etc in Bradley Co AR

I don't have any experience researching Bradley Co and I need to know where to look for legal records.........???

The family below is one of the trickier ones I've researched in my 30 years and the difficulty is compounded by (1) their almost always misspelled surname (2) the 20 year gap between the 1880-1900 censuses (3) the lack of death records in most states before 1915.
==========================================================
Mrs Amanda NUNNERLEE married W. H. NUNNERLEE 24 Jun 1870 in Lauderdale Co MS (this surname was actually NUNNELEE)
==========================================================
The 1870 census below indicate 6 children born before Walter and Amanda married..... whose children were they ?
1870 Lauderdale Co MS/Meridian/HH 558/pg 56a (25 Jul 1870)
NUNELLY, Walter H /HH/wm age 38 AL
Nunelly, Amanda /wf age 28 TN
Nunelly, Mary E /wf age 14 MS
Nunelly, Franklin /wm age 12 MS
Nunelly, George /wm age 14 MS
Nunelly, Wily /wm age 07 MS
Nunelly, Sarah /wf age 04 MS
Nunelly, Louise /wf age 03 MS
===========================================================
.........now comes the first "monkey wrench".....
(1) if Walter gave the census info then George, Martha Sarah, and Louisa are Amanda's children BUT (2) if Amanda gave the census info then George, Martha Sarah, and Louisa are Walter's children
1880 Bradley Co AR/Pennington/HH 62-86/pg 4a (03 Jun 1880)
NUNLEY, Walter H /HH/wm age 50 AL/Ga?/Ga?
Nunley, Amanda /wife/wf age 45 TN/Ga/Tn
Nunley, George L /Step-son/wm age 19 MS/Al/Tn <<<
Nunley, Martha S /Step-dtr/wf age 15 MS/Al/Tn <<<
Nunley, Louiza /Step-dtr/wf age 15 MS/Al/Tn <<<
=========================================================
.........the 2nd "monkey wrench"............
(1) if Walter gave the census info then George is Amanda's son and since George is listed as a "nephew" it seems to indicate that Amanda's first husband was Walter's brother (2) if Amanda gave the census info then George is Walter's son and could be Amanda's nephew-in-law or nephew by some unknown relationship. .....sigh.....
1900 Bradley Co AR/Pennington/HH 279/pg 329a (25 Jun 1900)
NUNNELEE, Walter H /HH/wm age 67 born Mar 1833 AL/Ga/Va
+ married 29 yrs
Nunnelee, Amanda /wife/wf age 67 born unk TN/Tn/Tn
+ 1 of 4 chn lvg
NUNNELEE, George L P /NEPHEW/wm age 39 born Sep 1860 MS/Ga/TN + single
========================================================
.........the 3rd "monkey wrench"............
this census indicates that (1) Amanda was Walter's THIRD wife and (2) if accurate, Amanda had just one child living but who is it ??? I don't have a clue what happened to Mary E, Martha Sarah, or Wily but James F died 1893 in TX and Louisa [Nunnelee] Stovall Enis is reported to have died in Bradley County 1901. (3) for the first time George is listed as a son but who gave the census info ??? And, does the mean the same person gave the 1880 and 1900 census info and therefore seeming to verify that Walter married his brother's wife or widow ?? Or did George himself give the census info and considered himself to be the son of both Walter and Amanda ??

1910 Bradley Co AR/Pennington/HH 258-276/pg 82b
(13 May 1910)
NUNNERLY, Walter H /HH/wm age 77 AL/Ga/Va + 3m = 39 yrs
Nunnerly, Amanda /wife/wf age 76 TN/Tn/Va + 2m + 1 of 4 chn lvg
Nunnerly, George L P /SON/wm age 48 MS/Al/TN + single
STOVALL, James S /G-SON/wm age 17 AR/Ar/Ms

Walter died 10 Aug 1911 and Amanda died 10 Nov 1916 and George 1st married about 1916; both recvd CSA penions under the surname spelling NUNNELLEE. Amanda is listed in the Ancestry com AR death index as N-u-n-a-l-l-y but I am waiting on her death certificate to see if that spelling is correct or a typo.

To top off the list of mysteries, I have no clue who Walter's parents or siblings were nor do I know anything about Amanda before she married Walter except she had 4 chn.

Back to Bradley County records..........
(1) what published sources are available for purchase that includes marriages between 1875 and 1900 ??
(2) which cemeteries fall within the boundaries of Pennington and Marion townships ? Are books available for purchase that includes them ?
(3) were birth and death recorded and kept by the county before Bradley complied with the state laws to send them to the state?

I know this is a lot and very lengthy but George has a 90 year old son who is still living and was just a teenager when his parents died...he knows nothing about his family and I want to find anything and everything I can for him.

My heartfelt thanks for anything you can share to help me do that.
Kathye [Payne] Upham
Nunnelee surname researcher

Gilliard & Sarah Colburn are listed on the 1860 Pennington Township, Bradley Co., AR census. I am looking for their daughters who were also on the census: Callie E. b 1844, Rebecca b 1846, & Martha b 1848. All were born in Alabama. I can't find them after 1860. They probably migrated to Arkansas from Alabama about 1858.
NANNELEE)
W.H. MUNLER > Co D 20th MS Inf CSA (aka William H. NUNNELEE)
W. MINNELLE > 20th MS Inf CSA
A. MUMLEY > Co E 20th MS Inf CSA

I am trying to identify Walter H. NUNNELEE born abt 1833 AL
married Amanda [unknown and per the 1910 census she had been married before] about 1869 most likely in MS
1850 - not found yet
1860 - not found yet
1870 Meridian, Lauderdale Co MS as Walter H. NUNELLY
1880 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNLEY
1900 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNNELEE
1910 Pennington, Bradley Co AR as Walter H. NUNNELEE

On the Bradley Co AR GenWeb list of civil war soldiers I found the following:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~arbradle/military/civil_war4.html
"W.H. NUNNELLEE enlisted in Company "D" 20th Mississippi serving from 1861-1865. Wife Amanda. He died Nov 10, 1911."

1st QUESTION > Did the "W.H. NUNNELLEE" service information come from his or his wife's pension application?
OR, was the information found on soldier "W.H. NUNNLEE" assumed to be Walter H. Nunnelee but isn't ?

2nd QUESTION > Was "W.H. NUNNELLEE" Walter or William ? There were NO other Nunnelee's (any spelling) in Lauderdale Co MS or Bradley Co AR when Walter and his family lived there and according to the census he could not read or write..... so where did he come up with the very rare spelling N-u-n-n-e-l-e-e ... (did a family member spell it for him?) or (was the census taker familiar with that spelling...not too likely as the closest Nunnelee's lived all the way across the state)

3rd QUESTION > Walter's wife Amanda died Nov 1916 in Bradley County .... does anyone know where she or Walter are buried?

FYI ... I descend from a long line of Walter Nunnelee's so it's very important to me to identify the man who died in Bradley Co AR..... perhaps he was orphaned young as there were never any recognizable family in the places he lived?

Kathye
n540 at att.net

Yes, there was as least one natural gas well in southern Bradley County at Vick. The well has been capped for several years, but I own a share of it. My great grandfather owned it. He also had a hotel and sawmill at Vick (and if my memory serves me right a store). As a child I was told that it was capped due to the mosquitos that like to breed in the salt water.

This query was originally submitted Aug 03, 1998.
NOTE: 4578 Lenora Drive, Gardendale, AL 35071

Caroline Elizabeth SPEARS b. c1851, ?AR, was living in Bradley Co., AR and was on 1860 Census household headed by John N. Speller b. c1822, SC and his brother, Thomas J. Speller b. c1828, SC with wife Mary S. b. c1834, TN. Thomas and Mary Speller had the following children: James T., b. c1856, Miss. and William F. b. c 1859, AR. Caroline Spears who lived with this SC Speller family is surrounded on the census listing by members of the SC Ashcraft family, namely: Thomas J. Ashcraft b. c1831, SC; James L. Ashcraft b. c1828, SC; Uriah Ashcraft, b. c1824, SC, and Thomas Ashcraft, b. c1833, SC., and their families. Jesse Aschraft, b. c1800, SC and wife Sarah, b. c1804, SC, living in their midst.
Graves of Eliza Ann Browder and Children

I am searching for information on the graves of Eliza Ann Browder and her 4 children. She and her husband, Martin Van Buren Browder, left Florida and headed to Texas about 1874. Allegedly, Eliza and 4 children died of swamp fever along the way. I can find no documentation, explaination nor reasoning as to why they were in Arkansas. Family lore says that Martin buried his wife and 4 children in a "common grave" and fenced it off with cypress wood. He then continued on to Texas with his young daughter Belle Matilda. No word as to weather or not he left any other defining information on the grave.

Thanks,

Vickie
MBrowder53190@aol.com
My grandfather was born in Bradley County, in Warren. His name was K.E.(King Earl)Forrester. His mother was Margret Evaline (Eva) King Forrester. She was married to William F. Forrester. I know they died and were buried in Texas, but Earl and my grandmother- Versie Mae Hairston divorced in the 1920's and we do not know what happened to him. He was born 11/11/1897. He worked for the Arkansas Railroad in Little Rock at the time of their divorce, but no info. is available from the railroad services, as his employment was not lengthy. His mother's maiden name was King, and she named him after her family. She never used her first name and my grandfather used the name Earl -not King. My mother never uses her first name (Olga) Earline Forrester White, I never use my first name, and my son goes by his middle name as well, so it goes back several generations! I have lots of information on the Aults and Kings, but not much on the Forresters. If anyone knows how I can find it, please email.
Thanks,
Anne
I am looking for William L. Harmon b. abt 1881 Lafayette County, MS

He is the son of Lee S Harmon aka Levi Smith Harmon Jr and Kate Barry (or Berry) who settled in Bradley and Calhoun Co. Arkansas between 1885 and 1900 from Lafayette County, MS. Lee was a newspaper editor and printer

In the 1900 Warren, AR census his name is written in but crossed out and his two sisters are listed. According to the census the family had three children. William's sisters were Lena K and Mary Myrna. Mary Myrna married a Witherington and I have contacted her descendants. None of them were aware of a brother but they did not really know anything about Lee or Kate's origins or that Lee was really Levi.

Either William died prior to the 1900 census or had possibly already moved out on his own at approx 19 YOA.

All help is appreciated
He lived in Company housing I think - as there are several teamsters living in the same residence as well as a bookkeeper.

His name was John E Walker. The enumeration of the census was in Supervisors District 6 Enumeration District 22 Sheet no. 15

Looking for any info on MILLERs of Drew and Bradley Cos. My 3rd great grandmother, Jane T (maiden name unk)MILLER, b.c1799 SC & d.1865 probably Drew or Bradley Co. Since she was with her son William T MILLER on 1860 census, who is buried in the Old Warren Cemetery, I strongly suspect she is buried next to him in an unmarked grave there. No records are known to exist for this cemetery, but if anyone knows of family bible records, etc., I would be so greatful for any help.
TIA,
Peggy Calk
I was told by my father that his aunt, Katie Sue Overton, was the first female sheriff in Arkansas. I haven't seen any articles about this. She was born in Rison (near Toledo) Cleveland County, Arkansas and was married at least twice, one of her husband's surname being Bondurant. She took her maiden name back though. Does anyone have any information or recollection of her? I believe that she was born in about 1895 and died in the 80's. Thank you.
Carrie Reed

According to Oakland Cemetery Records of Warren, Arkansas (Bradley Co.), they have a double marker with
DOM 11-23-1901.

Is there someone who might be able to make a digital photo of the gravesite for me?
Also, an obituary for both would be awesome...as I'm trying to trace my geneology back on my Mother's side...

Thank you...

Art Dubé

The other two are of the small children of Henry M & Amanda C Dailey (Daley).
Does anyone know the name of this cemetery or if there is a record of it and who else is buried there?
Thank you,
Carolyn
